Bridges and barriers to offering outdoor education to grade 4-7 students in schools

Sanderson, Arthur Owen 05 1900 (has links)
This study investigated the bridges (enabling factors) and the barriers (hindering factors) of offering school-based Outdoor Education programmes. A questionnaire was used to survey 120 grade 4-7 classroom teachers. Teachers were required to record their perceptions pertaining to the bridges and barriers of Outdoor Education programmes on an 11-point scale. Open-ended responses also provided insights about the barriers and bridges, as well as how Outdoor Education programmes could be supported in school settings. Data suggested Outdoor Education is indeed offered in many schools but often only to a limited degree. Interestingly, the identified barriers tended to be of an organisational nature, whereas the bridges tended to be more closely aligned to pedagogical interests. Time, costs and legal liability were perceived by teachers as the strongest barriers to offering Outdoor Education. The strongest bridges were related to student learning, other educational stakeholders and the availability of outdoor areas. These research findings provide guidance for policy, professional development and other means of supporting elementary teachers' efforts to offer Outdoor Education. Methodological guidance is also offered for further research along similar lines. / Education, Faculty of / Curriculum and Pedagogy (EDCP), Department of / Graduate

The actions of the superior education professor is decisive in the aiming of academic disciplines. This action is constructed and encompassed in the elements that influence it. The main concern of this study was to question the professor action while decisive for the attribution of identity to Adapted Physical Education disciplines, its aiming, as well as the aspects that can contribute for the construction of this action. To elucidate such concern it was objectified to identify who is this professor of superior education in the disciplines of Adapted Physical Education (APE) at institutions of superior education in the Mato Grosso do Sul state, his educational background and performance, as well as its representation about APE, correlating these data with the legal orientations and the literature of this area. Having as starting point this conception, the qualitative research with interpretation and documentary scope was understood through the revision of literature, and if it would be capable to reach a "social objectivity" that involves the reality of this construction that is the professor action in the relation with the Adapted Physical Education disciplines. In such way, seven institutions of Superior Education had been selected (one public and six private ones) that offer undergraduation courses and/or teaching education courses in Physical Education in the Mato Grosso do Sul state. The collection of data was carried out through questionnaires with the seven professors of Adapted Physical Education disciplines, and digests and programs of this area literature. This made possible to identify the proposals of the professors for Adapted Physical Education, by means of ¿ mapping¿ the initial formation of this area of study in the Mato Grosso do Sul state. Through the developed analyses can be shown that: the aspects that have influence on the action of the professor are formed by the historical, social and political contexts; the Adapted Physical Education discipline is a product of the way it is constructed along the years of attendance for persons in deficiency conditions; the development of the forms of attendance for persons in deficiency condition brought changes in the superior education. The inclusion empowers the necessities of the superior education reorganization; the International orientation with relation to the attendance of the PWD (person with deficiency) influence strongly the Brazilian law ; Each professor is an unique being and so his singularity reflects in the form he acts in adapted physical education disciplines. On this track, the action of the professor who attributes identity and aiming to Adapted Physical Education disciplines, and this action reflects how the experience is articulated (legal orientation, literature, digests and programs of the disciplines), and how the individual interprets this human being subjective experience, and what meaning is attributed to it / Mestrado / Atividade Fisica, Adaptação e Saude / Mestre em Educação Física

Brum, Lisiane Reis 17 December 2009 (has links)
Ethics, as philosophical reflection about the values that the human being takes and about the meaning of the actions that they practice, is essential in the training of Physical Education teachers, especially for developing a teaching practice directed toward the body and movement of human beings. The body, in Physical Education, can be understood by different ways, however, for the pedagogical practice of the teacher to be seen as an education directed to the totality of the human being, as a way of expression and physical communication, mental, emotional and social, we understand that teacher training in Physical Education requires constant attention on the issues focused on ethics and pedagogical implications about teaching practice with the body of others, considering the complexity that there is in different dimensions that characterize the human body. In view of the teachers training concerned to assist in reflection on ethics, body and education, we believe that the academic space is the way which it is possible to offer to the Physical Education´s graduate students the debate of these issues, since the teachers training is closely linked to the understanding of the whole process of learning and the teacher´s role in this process. This research aims to investigate how the degree course in Physical Education from a private institution has contributed to the formation of the ethical attitude of its students, considering the teaching practice with the body of others and considering that a specific look on attitudes in relation to others and about values assigned to the human body may have a direct relationship to the ethical education of each one. This study is related to the research line of History and Philosophy of Education and linked to the Project: Ethics in Teacher Training Program, of the Post-Graduation Program in Education at the University of Caxias do Sul. In order to provide elements that could answer the objective of this study, we analyzed the concepts of ethics and the body through the review of literature referenced by ideas of the philosophers Aristotle and Merleau-Ponty. The study is characterized as analyticaldescriptive, a qualitative approach. The instrument used for data collection was semistructured interview, the sample consisted of nine university teachers and thirteen students from bachelor´s degree in Physical Education, and we tried to verify the perception of respondents considering ethics, the body, the ethical attitudes of university teachers and its influence on the formation of an ethical conduct. For data analysis, we used the textual discourse analysis proposed by Moraes (2007). The study is divided into an introduction, a chapter referent to ethics and the body, another on the methodological framework and a final chapter with the analysis and interpretation of information, besides the final considerations about the research. We realized that students and professors are unanimous in the recognition of the importance of ethics for the harmonious relationship between human beings, whose term is seen by most as synonymous as moral and conducted to question of the action itself. The body is seen by teachers as physical, emotional and social totality, however, some students tend to see the body as a working tool, and they connect the body to the immediate logic of the labor market, without realizing the magnitude that there is around the human body. However, it is possible to say that the degree course in Physical Education contributes positively to the development of responsibility and commitment to teaching practice through the example of the attitudes of university teachers, whose teaching practice is characterized by respect and care for the human being totality, even if a minority of students are not yet prepared to realize this.
