Ocorrência de rotaviroses em criações de suínos em diversos estados brasileiros / Occurrence of rotaviruses in swine herds from brasilian several states

Rita de Cássia Linares 26 April 2012 (has links)
The neonatal diarrhea constitute one of the most important economic and health factors in pig farms either by death or by the aggregate losses to the delay in the development of piglets, prophylaxis and management. Rotaviruses have a prominent role by the rapid spread within the herd, as well as the zoonotic potential, given the likelihood of genetic reassortment or recombination between human and animal samples. The objective of this study was to detect the presence of rotavirus from fecal samples from 277 piglets with clinical cases of diarrhea, from the states of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Santa Catarina (SC), Paraná (PR), Mato Grosso do Sul (MS), Mato Grosso (MT), São Paulo (SP), Rio de Janeiro (RJ) e Minas Gerais (MG) between the years 2009 and 2011 and to analyze the electrophoretic migration of genomic segments and electropherotype differences in positive samples, by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) technique. From 277 piglets diarrheal stool samples analyzed, 25 were positive (25/277 = 9%). In accordance with the States of origin, were observed frequencies of 20% (1/5) in the RS, 11.1% (1/9) in SC, 12.5% (1/8) in PR, 15.3 % (6/39) in MS, 14.2% (3/21) in MT, 6.7% (5/74) in SP, 0% (0/7) in Rio de Janeiro and 7% (8/114) in MG. For the analysis of the electrophoretic migration of genome segments, all 25 positive samples showed electrophoretic profile compatible with the RV-A as a standard sample NCDV, showing characteristic fourth class or aggregates [4-2-3-2]. We observed small differences in the migration speed of one or more segments within the same class. These results highlight the importance of PAGE as a method of diagnosis and epidemiological investigations in the porcine rotavirus.

Efeito da administração de bactérias ácido-láticas sobre o ganho de peso de leitões na maternidade / Effect of lactic acid bacteria administration on weight gain in suckling piglets

Camila Maria de Freitas 21 July 2008 (has links)
The experiment was carried in the gestation and farrowing environment of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Zootechny at University of Sao Paulo, in Pirassununga, to evaluate the effect of lactic acid probiotic bacteria administration on weight gain of a specific group of piglets just after the birth and before first colostrum suckling. For a better comparison, we designed another group of piglets, placebo, which received distilled water in the same volume and manner as probiotic group. All the animals were weighed weekly since birth until weaning, occurred with 21 days old. The average daily weight gain ranges also were considered. The tested probiotic did not change efficiently the weight gain of the animals (P>0,05), however, probiotic treated animals had greater average daily weight gain counts, mainly obvious at 7 and 14 days old, being able to justify the hypothesis of the nutrients economy existence, used by the host, owner of a stable and healthy microbiota.

Avaliação de um complexo enzimático na alimentação de porcas / Appraisal of an enzyme complex in sow\'s diet

Paulo Henrique Pelissari 24 February 2017 (has links)
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of adding a multi-enzyme complex enriched with xylanases and arabinofuranosidases in diets of pregnant and lactating sows and their effects on the progeny. One-hundred-and-twenty T20 females (Topigs Norsvin) were allotted in a randomized block design with two treatments: T1, control diet; T2, control diet with the addition of the multi-enzyme complex. Diets were based on corn and soybean meal and the addition of enzyme complex was performed on top by the premixes. The experimental diets were offered in the late gestation and throughout lactation. The nutritional composition of the experimental diets was equal between treatments, so that was not considered the nutritional value of multi-enzyme complex. Piglets were weaned at 21 days of age. Feed intake, weight loss of sows during lactation, number of piglets born alive, size and weight of the litter, litter weight at weaning and average weight gain of the piglets were assessed. Data were submitted to analysis of variance and means were compared using the Student t test. The animals fed the multi-enzyme complex diet had higher number of piglets born live (14 x 13 pigles; P = 0,0017), litter weight at birth (19,8 x 17,8 kg; P = 0,0014) and at weaning (69,7 x 64,9 kg; P = 0,0109), and feed intake of female in relation to the litter weight gain (1,85 x 2,06 kg; P = 0,0339) than animals fed control diet, respectively. The addition of dietary multi-enzyme carbohydrolase complex for sows, during the period of gestation and lactation, improves performance traits of progeny, at birth and weaning at 21 days.

Effect of early weaning on piglet weight gain and fertility in sows (Sus scrofa) in Carmen Pampa of Nor Yungas - La Paz

Luna Isita, Darwin Juan 01 January 2006 (has links) (PDF)
This study was carried out in swine production facilities of the School of Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnic Studies at the Rural Academic Unit of Carmen Pampa. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of weaning male and female piglets at different times on their weight gain and the fertility of the sows. Four three year old sows that had a total of 40 piglets (25 males and 15 females) were used. The piglets were distributed across the following treatments: T1 - weaning 9 piglets (5 males and 4 females) at 56 days, T2 - weaning 13 piglets (7 males and 6 females) at 46 days, T3 - weaning 7 piglets (5 males and 2 females) at 36 days, and T4 - weaning 11 piglets (8 males and 3 females) at 26 days. This was followed by three weekly weight management phases in both sexes: Beginning (1-56 days), Growth (1-112 days), and Finished (1-150 days). A completely randomized design with different numbers of repetitions was used to analyze the results. The ANOVA test for weight gain did not show significant differences between treatments (p>0.05) in the beginning, growth, and finished stages for male piglets. The ANOVA test for weight gain in females during the initial phase showed significant differences (p0.05). In the fattening phase there were significant differences (p>0.05). The Duncan test showed that T3 (60.50 kg), T2 (56.42 kg), and T1 (54.75 kg) are equal and that T1 (54.75 kg) and T4 (43.33 kg) were similar at the end of the trial. The comparison of males and females was done via the student t test and indicated that there was no significant difference between males and females. The sow in T3 (44 days) recorded the best postpartum fertility. In general, treatment T3 (weaned at 36 days) showed the best results for both weight and fertility.

Abstract: In order to the mechanisms which promote the welfare in pig production can be used, it is necessary to develop research works to lower their costs and increase their practicality, enabling the sustainability of the process. Heating of piglets in nursery and maternity phases may be improved to raise energy savings, without undermining the welfare of animals. This research work aimed to compare three of heating technologies for piglets of three weeks aged, nursery phase, in relation to electrical energy use, welfare conditions and animal performance. The studied heating technologies were: TR - suspended electrical resistors, TP - heated floor and TA - heating by convection. The heated floor system was better under the aspect of electrical energy use. The electrical resistance heating system was the best regarding to the animals environmental needs, and convection heating system was the best considering the productive, behavior and physiological animal responses. Considering installation and operation, electrical energy use, environmental and animal welfare aspects, the heating system by suspended resistors was the best. However, more tests are suggested in order to improve TA and hybrid systems use. / Doutorado / Construções Rurais e Ambiencia / Doutor em Engenharia Agrícola

To meet the growing demands for pork products, lactating sows are often housed in farrowing crates to reduce piglet crushing. However, the public has raised welfare concerns about farrowing crate systems due to the confinement and barren environment, which can impair social interactions between sow and piglets, change their activity levels, and alter how sows and piglets satisfy their motivated behaviors to chew and explore by oral manipulation of pen and pen mates. Barren and confined environments can result in skin abrasions caused by oral manipulations and fighting, physiological stress, inactivity, and abnormal behaviors, which can have an impact on sows’ and piglets’ welfare, productivity, and behavior. Previous work on environmental enrichments has shown promise to improve average daily gain, activity levels, stress, and behavioral repertoire. However, the majority of studies on pig environmental enrichments take place after weaning and research investigating the impact enrichments have during lactation is limited. In addition, research on maximizing the use of environmental enrichments based on the location inside the farrowing crate systems has not been conducted. To address the knowledge gaps concerning the impact of the location of environmental enrichments on the welfare, behavior, and productivity of sows and piglets in farrowing crate systems and to provide educational material on pig enrichment, this dissertation consists of two parts: Chapters 2 and 3 examine the effects of the location of environmental enrichments in farrowing crate systems on sows’ and piglet’s welfare, productivity, and behavior. Chapter 5 is an extension article on the different types of environmental enrichments and the best strategies for implementing enrichment in swine operations.

In Chapter 2, sows (n = 37) and focal piglets (n = 148) were assigned to three treatment groups: SPE (both sows and piglets had access to enrichment objects), PE (only piglets had access to enrichment objects), and CON (control group with no enrichment) blocked by sow parity and genetics. Sow posture and piglet behavior during the lactation and nursery phases were observed at various times after birth and weaning. Environmental enrichments significantly influenced the behaviors of suckling piglets, reducing pig-directed and agonistic behaviors. Piglets with enrichments tended to explore the pen less and engage in more social behaviors. The location of enrichments also impacted behaviors, with higher nursing behavior observed during mid-lactation for piglets with access to enrichments (PE) and increased interaction with enrichments when they were accessible to both sows and piglets (SPE). Treatment did not affect sow postural changes or most nursery behaviors, except for walking, which increased in SPE nursery piglets compared to CON piglets. Overall, the study demonstrated positive effects of environmental enrichments on suckling piglets in farrowing crate systems, highlighting the importance of enrichment placement on nursing behaviors and enrichment interaction.

In Chapter 3, the same sows and piglets were used to investigate the effects of enrichment location on the welfare (skin lesions, pressure sores, salivary cortisol, and tear stains) and performance (average daily gain and piglet crushing) of the sows and piglets. This study used the same animals that were assigned the treatment group, housing, and management practices from Chapter 2. Salivary cortisol samples were collected from sows at four time points: 24 hours after moving into farrowing crates, 24 hours after treatment group assignment, midway between moving into crates and weaning, and on the day of weaning. Pressure sores of sows were scored on days 1, 4, 7, 10, 14, and 17 after farrowing. For suckling piglets, tear stains and skin lesions were assessed on the same days, and their average daily gain (ADG) was analyzed weekly during lactation. In the nursery phase, salivary cortisol was collected from piglets on the day of weaning and days 1, 7, and 14 post-weaning, with tear stains and skin lesions measured on those days as well. Nursery ADG was analyzed from weaning to day 14 post-weaning. Results indicated that control (CON) sows were less likely to have no pressure sores compared to sows with shared (SPE) enrichments, while piglets in the enriched treatment groups (PE and SPE) had smaller tear stain areas than those in the CON group. Treatment influenced skin lesions in suckling piglets, with enriched piglets having fewer lesions in the ear and front body regions. There was no treatment effect on salivary cortisol for both sows and nursery piglets, nor did treatment affect ADG, piglet crushing, or nursery skin lesions. The provision of environmental enrichments in farrowing crates reduced pressure sores of sows, skin lesions of suckling piglets and tear stains of suckling and nursery piglets.

Overall, providing environmental enrichments to suckling piglets reduced aggression, as evidenced by fewer agonistic and pig-directed behaviors, and resulted in fewer skin lesions compared to piglets without enrichments. This suggests potentially reduced stress levels in enriched piglets, indicated by smaller tear stain areas. While most behaviors and skin lesion scores showed no significant differences during the nursery phase, enriched piglets continued to have smaller tear stains. Enrichment location influenced the following: sows had fewer pressure sores, and suckling piglets interacted more with enrichments and exhibited fewer pig-directed behaviors when enrichments were accessible to both sows and piglets compared to the only piglet enriched treatment group. Piglets with access only to enrichments also performed more nursing behaviors during mid-lactation compared to the control group. Overall, the study highlights the benefits of environmental enrichments in farrowing crate systems, particularly the positive impact of enrichment location on the welfare and behavior of sows and piglets.

Lastly, in Chapter 5, the extension article discusses the definition of environmental enrichment and its impact on pigs’ welfare. The article also delves into the five types of environmental enrichments (nutritional, occupational, physical, sensory, and social), providing examples of each. Additionally, the article offers five practical tips for efficiently and successfully implementing environmental enrichments in swine herds.

Alternatives of management to assist in the survival of neonatal pigs

Cypriano, Cristiana Reis January 2008 (has links)
Most pre-weaning losses concentrate on the first three days of life, affecting an average of 30-40% of piglets born under 1000g live weight. Most techniques used successfully to reduce neonatal mortality involve intensive pre-weaning management, such as farrowing induction and assistance, cross fostering, adequate intake of colostrum in the first few hours of life and supply of exogenous nutritional supplement (coconut oil). The aim of the present study was to assess the performance of light and medium weight piglets receiving specialized treatment after equalization, as with the system of management known as “40 to 20”, which consists in maintaining piglets closed for 40 minutes in the creep area and 20 minutes sucking six times daily during the first three days of life, with castration at the tenth day of life and supplementation with coconut oil (two doses of 3ml in the first and second day of life) compared with light and medium weight piglets that did not receive 40-20 treatment and were not castrated on the seventh day. A total of 2667 piglets originating from 222 females with parity order between 2 to 3 were monitored. At the time of equalization, piglets were weighed and divided into groups as medium weight (> 1100g ≤ 1500 g) and light weight (≥ 700g until ≤ 1100g). After weighing, the piglets were identified individually with tattooing of sequential numbers and divided into control group (light LG and medium MG) and treated group (light LT and medium MT). There was no difference in weight gain from birth to weaning related to management in both groups (P <0.05). The mortality rate from birth to weaning was 12.5% and 11.6% in groups LG and MG and 3.2% and 5.4% in groups LT and MT, respectively. However, an increase was observed in the mortality of the medium weight treated group (P <0.05) at 14 and 21 days of life. Because the differences in mortality rates were observed only after 14 days, it was difficult to associate with management. It was observed an increase in the rate of transfer of piglets with low weight of the control group at 14 and 21 days (7.9% and 10.4% respectively), when compared to the group of light weight piglets. This could possibly have negatively influenced weight gain and mortality rate of the group.
