Control of the Spar-buoy Based Wind Turbine Floating Platform Through Mooring Line Actuation

This thesis presents an innovative approach to enhance the stability of floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT) platform through mooring actuation. First, an OC3- Hywind spar-buoy floating platform is modeled utilizing the Control-oriented, Reconfigurable, and Acausal Floating Turbine Simulator (CRAFTS) with a specific focus on predicting hydrodynamic and mooring line loads while intentionally excluding consideration of aerodynamic forces. The accuracy of this model is validated against the industry standard OpenFAST simulator through various test cases. The central objective of this study revolves around achieving robust stabilization of the spar buoy platform, primarily focusing on X-Z symmetric planar motions, including surge, pitch, and heave degrees of freedom (DOFs). To accomplish this, two linearization techniques are employed: one transforms the inherently complex nonlinear model from CRAFTS into a linear Mass-Spring-Damper (MSD) system, particularly targeting surge and pitch motions, while the other method involves the conversion of the nonlinear model from CRAFTS into the Functional Mockup Interface (FMI) within MATLAB/Simulink for linearization. The analysis utilizing Bode plots derived from these lin- earized models yields crucial insights into the system's response to mooring actuation. Notably, it emphasizes the inherent challenge in pitch control, characterized by lower gain compared to surge at relevant frequencies, necessitating substantial mooring actuation or cable length modifications for effective pitch stabilization. Then, a Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) controller is designed to mitigate surge and pitch motions. Numerical simulations conducted across diverse scenarios reveal the inherent challenge in simultaneously mitigating surge and pitch motions using the original platform configuration. To address this challenge, a control co-design strategy is proposed, leading to the development of an optimized mooring line configuration that effectively stabilizes both motions with minimal adjustments. In summary, this thesis introduces a control-oriented modeling approach and an innovative control strategy to enhance the stability of the floating wind turbine platform through mooring actuation. The results emphasize the potential for broader application of this approach to various floating platforms for FOWTs and the extension of stabilization efforts to address all six DOFs in future research, where aerodynamic loads are also incorporated.

Why do Swedes Queue? : Investigating housing allocation through real estate platforms

This study analyses the impact emerging platforms for housing allocation might have on the Swedish housing market, through an analysis of allocation platforms and housing queues. The study utilises Fields and Rogers’ (2021) typology of operational and data platforms in order to define and analyse the practices of municipal housing agencies, marketplaces for rental housing, and assistants for managing housing queues, as allocation platforms. Characteristic of allocation platforms, defined within the framework of platform real estate (PRE), is engagement in data collection and valuation. Combining housing applicants’ ‘übercapital’ (Fourcade & Healy, 2017) with queue times creates what I term queue capital. This queue capital serves as a dual process of data-valuation, that allows for valuation of rental housing according to queue time, but also enables housing seekers to access rental housing. Furthermore, housing queues are categorised as strict or indicative based on the rental policies of housing companies: strict queues, commonly used by municipal housing agencies, prioritise the first eligible applicant, whereas indicative queues, prevalent in marketplaces, organise applicants without strictly adhering to queue order.

Exploring In/Dependency in the Digital Platform Era: Nordic Public Service Media Navigating the Success of Social Media News

This thesis explores how journalists and managers at Nordic public service organizations perceive successful news reporting through third-party social media. The aim is to contribute to the understanding of digital platform dependencies among public service organizations. Previous research has conceptualized digital journalistic epistemologies and examined specific methods of news production on platforms, highlighting concerns about journalistic autonomy in spaces influenced by third-party interests. This thesis employs a qualitative, exploratory approach to investigate the social media strategies and understandings of success at Nordic public service media organizations YLE, SVT, NRK, RÚV, and DR. Through semi-structured interviews, the study reveals an ongoing negotiation between editorial objectives and platform logics in social media news reporting. Journalists view success as engaging with the target audience, while managers emphasize credibility and relevance in a shifting media landscape. Further, the perceptions of journalists and managers are compared, highlighting a possible negotiation between the managerial and operational levels. The study revisits public service media news-making in a Nordic context, contributing to the fields of digital journalism studies and digital platform studies.

THE POWER OF CROWD IN THE BUSINESS WORLD

In this work, we focus on two attractive crowd-based business models, i.e., user-generated content creation and freight-matching long-haul trucking. First, as elaborated in CHAPTER 2, we consider a game theoretical modeling approach for understanding the operation of non-profit UGC platforms that rely on users to create content and maintain financial sustainability. In particular, we examine several interesting research questions with practical importance and unique contributions to the literature. These research questions mainly investigate how changes in critical business factors influence the platforms' strategic effort allocation, user participation, and overall performance. Second, in CHAPTER 3, we focus on the flourishing freight-matching businesses that rely on crowdsourced drivers for long-haul trucking. In particular, although the practice suggests that shippers' ordering behaviors of freight-matching services may remarkably impact crowdsourced drivers' bidding behaviors, the literature has yet to examine this issue formally. Therefore, we collect industrial data and construct a strict empirical schema for understanding the association between shippers' order timing and freight-matching performance. Besides, by deliberately building a theoretical modeling framework and using a data-driven estimation of model parameters, we are able to simulate the freight-matching performance of adopting our empirical findings and evaluate the practical value of our study. By investigating these two prominent business models, we aim to understand the advantages of crowdsourcing businesses and the role of crowds in nowadays' business innovations. Extremely Online: Cultural Borrowing, Mixing, and Transformation in Internet Music

The formation of distinctive Internet cultures, accompanied by the increasing importance of digital mediations for popular culture consumption, has culminated in both popular and academic discussions around the idea of Internet-based music scenes or communities as a cultural phenomenon, referred to as “Internet genres” or “Internet music.” This dissertation presents a comprehensive framework for and definition of Internet music through ethnographic and textual analyses of three separate scenes: vaporwave, hyperpop, and phonk. It interrogates issues of cultural borrowing and hybridity within these Internet music scenes, and how representations of racial, gender, sexual, and national identity are negotiated by both producers and fans. It also explores how the dynamics of the online platforms through which these scenes manifest (including, but not limited to their tendency toward anonymity, low barrier to entry for producers, and blurred lines between producers/consumers) shape these scenes, including how the algorithm-driven organization of these scenes and the influence of meme cultures impact how different identities and cultures are portrayed through these musics. Ultimately, this project interrogates how social and cultural identities and differences come to be constructed and articulated in online environments, and how in a “post-Internet” age, individuals are increasingly using popular media to make sense of their relationships with digital technologies. / Media & Communication

Developing an after action review system for a 3D interactive training simulation using XML

Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited / An important capability that many modern 3D interactive training simulations lack is an After Action Review System (AARS) that helps both the trainer and trainee to conduct an After Action Review (AAR). Although AAR is not a new idea in the 3D simulation field, it is not widely used in training simulations. In real life training, AAR has been proven as one of the most important phases of the training procedure, sometimes taking the form of debriefing, or in other cases, by conducting a deeper analysis and discussion of the facts. In order to conduct an AAR, a well-designed system (AARS) must exist to keep track of the conditions and the actions during an exercise, so they can be available for review later. This thesis translates the idea of AAR for real training situations to the 3D interactive simulation domain and also develops an After Action Review System (AARS) using XML technology for capture, analysis, and interactive playback of an entire simulation training session.
