Play in Place: The Role of Site-Specific Playgrounds in Community Space

Nkwocha, Allison 18 May 2013 (has links)
Playgrounds do not have to be static sites, but safety standards should not be the only force that guides their evolution over time. Just as the ongoing transformation of any city is a product of many interwoven factors, the collection of smaller sites that delineates one city from another should reflect the same holistic influences. This is not an argument for the abandonment of the safety standards that influence playground design. Instead, it is an argument for the adoption of and stronger adherence to community standards that influence city design. This paper argues that a park area (and more generally, any public space) that is relevant and unique to a community will be well-used by the community and, thus, a successful space; it is in a city’s best interest to create such spaces where they are lacking and protect them where they already exist. The first chapter provides a land-centric history of the growth and development of the Los Angeles region, which is especially deficient in public green space. I argue that transportation technology and infrastructure was the great shaping force of the urban environment during the 19th and 20th centuries, and discuss the Olmsted-Bartholomew “Parks, Playgrounds, and Beaches for the Los Angeles Region” report that was presented to the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce in 1930. The second chapter covers the design communication of American playgrounds since their beginnings in the late 19th century. I also analyze the parallel between Progressive Era playground supervision and the present-day safety standard obsession that has created an equally rigid playscape. The third chapter is a case study of the ongoing historical preservation treatment of La Laguna playground at Vincent Lugo Park in San Gabriel, CA and a discussion of the value of site-specificity.

Scarpellini, Maira Andriani 15 March 2013 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This research was aimed at comprehending the relationship that students establish with the music in a playground. From this objective, we sought to understand what are (and how happen) the musical practices of children in this environment, what are the means used by them to make present this music in the playground, how they teach and learn music at this time of the school routine, how do they share (or not) the music with colleagues and how is the playground organization as a leisure place while at school, with different logics and dynamics. Therefore, it was important to understand the structure and organization of playground, how music weaves times and spaces in that place, how children learn/teach music while play and do other activities in that educational space/time. With a qualitative approach, the method adopted was the case study, and the data collection procedures were based on observations and interviews. We adopted the theoretical principles of the following authors: to understand the playground as a social space, Bourdieu (1997, 2004); to understand it as a space of leisure and learning, Marcellino (1990, 1998, 2006) and Dumazedier (1994); to reflect on the learning as a form of relating to the world, Charlot (2000); and to comprehend the play and playful, Brougère (2001, 2004, 2010, 2012a, 2012b). According to the conclusions, it is detached that children relate to music in a playground in different ways, using portable stereos, singing and percussion to makes it presented in the school. They teach and learn music through play and other forms of interaction such as conversation, singing and percussion. Studying this period the school routine was enriching to address the processes of teaching and learning music for children and thereby to understand the music and pedagogical practices at school.

Sharp, Oliver January 2020 (has links)

Questioning child-friendliness of public spaces in a modernist district Sykhiv (Lviv, Ukraine)

Kalash, Anna January 2022 (has links)
Importance of seeing and implementing children’s needs in the urban public realm is widely discussed among urban researchers in recent years. It is becoming more challenging, as nowadays there are more than one billion children growing up in cities, which is more than ever before. In this research, I discuss a specific context of a modernist area, Sykhiv, which represents the most widespread type of residential area in Ukraine. The research aims to understand the quality of Sykhiv’s neighborhoods for children and to understand the different perspectives of experts and parents onchild-friendliness in the public realm of Sykhiv. The first research question is dedicatedto parents’ perspectives and children’s spatial practices, the second part is dedicated toexpert views on existing policies, practices, narratives towards child-friendly environment in Sykhiv. The third question represents the synthesis of two previous and reflects on the rethinking of public spaces in Sykhiv in terms of child-friendliness. Three key theories that help to frame this study are: holistic theory on Environmentalchild-friendliness helps to envision a complexity of a phenomenon of child-friendlinessof the environment, critical study on reconceptualizing the playground, which reflects onan extension of the focus of researching a play in the physical environment, andaffordance theory, which bridges the physical environment and human behavior. Theresults showed that Sykhiv has lots of features of a child-friendly environment, noticedboth by experts and parents, however, play infrastructure has numerous disadvantages. The holistic strategy, effective cooperation of all actors (public authorities, civic activists, parents and children, urban planners), awareness and knowledge are lacking in order tocontribute to a child-friendly environment, or at least to prevent negative tendencies tointensity of traffic, shortage of greenery, densening residential areas, etc. Extended safegreen spaces are more likely to perform children’s needs in a public realm, thanplaygrounds that are very frequent but of poor quality in Sykhiv.
