Directing Movement and the Perception of Space

The idea is implemented in the design of a playground and pavilion for Elkhorn Lake, located in Jenkins, Kentucky. Planning for play? : Analysing tacit truths of play in the planning system of Stockholm between 1970-1980 & 2010-2024

Despite early playgrounds and parks being important for how play came to be spatially structured within the city, play as a subject has largely been neglected within urban planning research. One aim of this thesis is to investigate how play has been conceptualised within planning to draw lessons for planners. A second aim is to find strategies that challenge unjust hierarchies by combining perspectives on play and planning. Starting from three questions, I perform a discourse analysis on written documents situated in the planning system of Stockholm, Sweden to describe and compare between the time periods: 1970-1980 and 2010-2024. I further use critical theories of space, play, and planning to ask how we might challenge current conceptualisations of play within planning, and to investigate the potential towards an egalitarian planning by learning from play theory. The results show a current conceptualisation of play focused on children, external benefits, and a depoliticisation of pleasure. For planners it is therefore important to engage with play ethically to not control individual playing frames. I conclude that the emergent qualities in play may be a way to centre planning as an institution of explorative social change which contrast the instrumental purpose of planning today.

Fait interculturel et transmédiatique mondialisé, le basket-ball reste toutefois lié à une identité pré-supposée afro-américaine, malgré son américanité de naissance et d’essence. Qu’est-ce qui réside derrière cette acculturation à rebours par une minorité d’un sport de la majorité ? En quoi l’afro-américanité du basket-ball est-elle un construit politique, culturel et social ? Quel rôle les médias jouent-ils dans la représentation de ce lien établi entre culture afro-américaine et basket-ball ? Et dans quelle mesure ce lien se retrouve-t-il dans les autres éléments de la culture populaire afro-américaine ?Cette démarche fait appel à différentes disciplines, de l’histoire culturelle aux études médiatiques, en passant par la sémiologie. Elle s’appuie sur un corpus complexe comportant principalement une étude de terrain, des analyses des commentaires de matchs, des documentaires sportifs et des productions audiovisuelles (films, séries TV, musique). Elle vise à exposer le dispositif de storytelling de la NBA, ainsi que la mise en images, en paroles et en musique de l’afro-américanité du basket-ball.La recherche met en évidences diverses phases dans l’évolution du sport, du Politique au Corporate en passant par le Symbolique, avec une récente phase Progressiste de retour du politique. L’analyse des commentaires des Finales NBA révèle la représentation de l’athlète noir à travers le prisme des médias. Mêlée au storytelling, la question raciale donne lieu à une mythologie sportive américaine où se joue le rapport à l’autre par le biais de la performance sportive et raciale des athlètes. L’étude des productions de la culture populaire fait émerger l’importance visuelle du corps de l’athlète noir et la figure du Basketteur noir dans l’imaginaire collectif américain. Le processus d’acculturation et d’appropriation culturelle se révèle ainsi partiellement à l’initiative de la communauté afro-américaine mais les médias et la culture populaire qu’ils véhiculent jouent un rôle essentiel dans le cadrage de la figure du Basketteur noir dans le grand récit du vivre-ensemble américain. / As a global cultural phenomenon, basketball is portrayed as a “black” sport, in spite of its origins in Mainstream America. What lies behind this acculturation in reverse, whereby a minority appropriates a sport of the majority? In what sense is the Afro-Americanness of basketball a political, cultural and social construct? What role do the media play in the representation of this link established between Afro-American culture and basketball? And to what extent does this link find itself reflected in the other elements of the Afro-American popular culture? The research methodology calls on various disciplines, from cultural history to media studies, including semiology. It relies on a complex corpus that includes ethnographic observation, the analyses of the comments of NBA matches, documentaries as well as audiovisual productions (movies, TV series, music). It aims at revealing the storytelling constructed by the NBA, as well as the representing in words and music of the Afro-Americanness of the basketball.The research highlights several phases in the evolution of the sport, from Political to Symbolic to Corporate with a recent Progressive phase of return to politics. The analysis of the comments of the Finales NBA reveals the representation of the black athlete through the media prism. Mixed with this storytelling, the issue of race is elaborated within an American sports mythology where the relation to the Other is mediated by the athletic and racial performance of the players. The study of popular culture underlines the visual importance of the black body and the figure of the Black Baller. The process of acculturation and cultural appropriation is thus partially related to the initiative of the Afro-American community but the media and the popular culture they convey play an essential role in the framing of the black Basketball player within the narrative of American togetherness.

<p><p>This thesis was rendered for the client HAGS Aneby AB that is a global leader in playground equipment. The goal of this project was to develop a seesaw that is available for children aged 5-12 years; both with and without disabilities. The project has aimed to develop a seesaw that fits everyone in the target group without looking specially adapted.</p><p>Children with disabilities have difficulty using today's seesaws because they consist of only a seat and a handle on each side. It requires that the user has strong arms and legs and can sit up without support. HAGS Aneby AB would like to change this.</p><p>To gain knowledge of the target group and on the different types of disabilities information was sought for on the internet including the RBU's and UNICEF's websites. During implementation several concepts was developed and screened off to finally get the final result. Methods such as QFD, feasibility assessment and Go/No-Go-screening have been implemented. The instructions in the safety standard EN 1176 has been closely followed in the development of the seesaw.</p><p>The final concept shows a broad seat with handles, seat backs and footrests on each side of a central section that is in the form of a U. On the sides of the seats there is a high lateral support, to lean against, and a low lateral support. Entry and exit will happen on the side where the low lateral support is situated. Rubber buds are placed on the back of the seats and on the outside of the high lateral support, so that an assistant could be able to assist with entry and exit and also to provide extra speed in use. A rubber suspension unit, that makes the seesaw move, restricts the movement to ± 30˚. In order to stimulate the senses, such as vision and hearing, a ballgame was placed in the middle part of the platform.</p></p>

Detta är en vetenskaplig essä som undersöker relationen mellan risk och ansvarstagande när det kommer till barnens lek. Arbetet består av två dilemmatexter som vi författare själva upplevt och det är utifrån dessa berättelser som reflektionen utgår ifrån. Syftet med arbetet är att bredda vår förståelsehorisont när vi hamnar i liknande situationer. Vi kommer genom metoden vetenskaplig essä reflektera över våra självupplevda dilemman med hjälp av olika teorier och litteratur. Genom våra reflektioner kom vi fram till att det är våra värderingar som styr hur vi handlar när vi hamnar i en situation där vi behöver ta ställning gällande barnens risktagande kontra vårt ansvar att se till så att dem är trygga och säkra i skolan. / This is a scientific essay that examines the relationship between risk and responsibility when it comes to children's play. The work consists of two dilemma texts based on what we authors ourselves experienced and it is based on these stories from which the reflection is based. The purpose of the work is to broaden our understanding horizon when we end up in similar situations. Through the scientific essay we will reflect on our self-perceived dilemmas with the help of different theories and literature. Through our reflections, we realized that our values govern how we act when we end up in a situation where we need to take a stand on the children's risk-taking versus our responsibility to ensure that they are safe and secure at school.

O presente trabalho é o resultado de um estudo sobre a implantação de parques infantis na cidade de Ribeirão Preto a partir da década de 1950, tendo como fonte de pesquisa documentos de natureza oficial, além de jornais, legislação e fotografias encontrados no Arquivo Público e Histórico do município. Objetivando analisar a gênese da instituição na cidade e identificar as bases sobre as quais o atendimento à criança se deu no interior dos parques, foi necessário buscar as origens da proposta parqueana e cotejar os diferentes modelos que foram implantados. Para tal, contou-se com um levantamento bibliográfico de dissertações, teses e outros trabalhos de pesquisa acerca do conceito de Parques Infantis que colaborou no sentido de evidenciar que o modelo precursor, instalado na capital paulista na década de 1930 por orientação do então Chefe do Departamento de Cultura Mário de Andrade, apresentava pontos em comum com algumas iniciativas que vinham sendo articuladas em outros países desde o século XIX. Além disso, a bibliografia delineou aspectos acerca do Departamento de Educação Física do Estado de São Paulo (DEF-SP) que permitiram situar melhor este órgão no contexto da construção dos parques não apenas em Ribeirão Preto, mas em outras cidades do interior paulista, onde orientava a construção dos prédios e difundia um modelo mais voltado para a Educação Física. Para atingirmos os resultados obtidos na presente pesquisa foi realizado, ainda, um levantamento sistemático de cada instituição que funcionou na cidade a partir de 1951 dados acerca do terreno e da localização dos parques, dos diferentes espaços e atividades desenvolvidas, dos funcionários e suas atribuições, entre outros. A leitura das fontes oficiais que consultamos, guardadas no Arquivo Municipal, sugere fortemente o protagonismo do Departamento de Educação Física do Estado na mobilização das autoridades políticas locais para a instalação dos parques e dizem respeito ao contexto político e social da cidade, que recebeu seu primeiro parque infantil em 1951. As fontes evidenciam que o modelo de instituição instalado em Ribeirão Preto se diferenciou do projeto criado por Mário de Andrade, em São Paulo, especialmente sob os aspectos culturais, que eram pouco ou quase nada considerados na rotina das crianças que frequentavam os parques da cidade em estudo. / This work is the result of a study on the implementation of children\'s playgrounds in the city of Ribeirão Preto from the 1950s, and has as source official documents, and journals, legislation and photographs found in the Public Archives and History about the city. Aimed at analyzing the genesis of the institution in the city and identify the basis on which to attendance the child took place inside the playground, it was necessary to seek the origins of playground proposal and collate the different models that have been deployed. To this end, counted on a literature review of dissertations, thesis and other research papers about the concept of playgrounds that collaborated in order to show that the precursor model, installed in São Paulo in the 1930s under the guidance of then Chief Department of Culture Mário de Andrade, had points in common with some initiatives that were being articulated in other countries since the 19th century. In addition, the literature outlined aspects about the Department of Education of São Paulo State Physics (DEF-SP) that allowed better situate this organ in connection with the construction of playground not only in Ribeirão Preto but in other cities of São Paulo, where directed the construction of buildings and diffused a friendlier model for Physical Education. To achieve the results obtained in this study , was conducted, a systematic survey of each institution that worked in the city since 1951 - data about the terrain and location of playgrounds, different spaces and developed activities , employees and their assignments , among others. Reading the official sources we consulted, stored in the Municipal Archive, strongly suggests the role of the state Department of Physical Education in the mobilization of local political authorities for the installation of playground and concern the political and social context of the city, which received its first playground in 1951. The sources show that the institution model installed in Ribeirao Preto differed design created by Mário de Andrade, in São Paulo, especially in the cultural aspects which were little or nothing considered in the routine of the children attending the city\'s playgrounds studied.

The purpose of this bachelor thesis Leisure-time pedagogues physical positioning on the school playground from a gender perspective is to examine the interaction between the leisure-time pedagogues and pupils during school break activities and how their physical positions on the school playground, and the pedagogues’ gender, reduces or amplifies the current gender stereotypes. Previous research has indicated that the school’s pedagogues play a significant part in the development of the pupils’ identity. Pedagogues’ approach, treatment, interaction and expectations towards pupils’, along with the school playground’s layout, are of importance. This thesis uses gender theory based upon various feminist perspectives. These present relevant concepts such as gender order, feminism, “genderfication” and gender equality. The empirical data has been collected through three observations and three computer-aided interviews. The result has proven that the gender of the pedagogue plays a certain part in the interaction with the pupils. Popular sports such as football and basketball are preferred by boys and male pedagogues while softer activities without competitive elements are preferred by girls and some boys. Our interpretation is that there is some reinforcement of stereotypical gender patterns during the school break activities. We see a correlation between how pedagogues work at our observed schools and what other researchers have presented in their studies. / Syftet med den här uppsatsen är att utforska samspelet mellan fritidshemspersonalen och eleverna under rastverksamheten, hur de placerar sig fysiskt på skolgården och om pedagogens kön kan försvaga eller förstärka könsmönster. Tidigare forskning har indikerat att skolans olika pedagoger spelar en väsentlig roll för elevernas identitetsutveckling. Pedagoger förhållningssätt, bemötande, interaktion, förväntningar på eleverna och skolgårdens utformning är centrala. Den här uppsatsen använder sig av genusteori med rötter i olika feministiska perspektiv. Dessa presenterar relevanta begrepp som könsordning, feminism, genusifiering och jämställdhet. För att samla in det empiriska materialet har vi använt observation och datorstödd intervju som metod. Materialet består av tre observationer och tre intervjuer. Resultatet visar att pedagogens kön spelar en viss roll i arbetet med eleverna. Dels är sport som fotboll och basketboll dominerat av pojkar och manliga pedagoger medan lugnare lek utan tävlingsmoment lockar fler flickor och en del pojkar. Vår tolkning är att det råder viss förstärkning av stereotypa könsmönster ute under rastverksamheten. Sett till tidigare forskning uppfattar vi en klar korrelation mellan hur pedagoger arbetar på de observerade skolorna och vad andra forskare har presenterat i sina studier.

Many studies have analyzed the quality of the physical environment available for activities of leisure in specific places for children, focusing in the influence of the physical space in the interpersonal relationships and the comfort and satisfaction generated by the physical characteristics of these spaces. Concern with scholar environment, specially the interest on playgrounds, has been subject of recent studies; however, little attention has been given to the opinion of the user-child in relation to this school environment. In this inquiry of the playground of two state schools of 1? to 4? series of elementary school in the city of Piracicaba, SP, was used: assystematics observations, photographic register of the studied environments, interviews with child-users and behavioral mapping. The main subjects resulting from the analysis of the interviews content were: adaptation, density and interpersonal relationships, and infantile confinement. The results revealed the unsatisfactory conditions of the courtyards, in respect to person-environment relationship. The children demonstrated to be critical, creative and responsible when answering questions related to the quality of the school courtyard. This finding confirms previous studies and leads to the conclusion that the child, as the direct user, should be included as an excellent source of consultation in the planning of the constructed environment / O prop?sito do presente estudo foi analisar a adequa??o do p?tio de escolas do ensino fundamental, segundo o ponto de vista da crian?a estudante, usu?ria direta desse tipo de ambiente, o que pressupunha sua cr?tica a respeito desses espa?os e visava a contribuir para sua melhoria.
