Synthesis of achiral and chiral CCC-NHC ligands and metal complexes for their catalytic applications in C-H functionalization of indoles with diazoacetates and benzoin condensation

The N-heterocyclic carbene (NHCs) based pincer ligands field is still in its infancy after decades. They are known for their applications in organocatalysis, coordinating with transition metals and p-block elements, catalysis, and material chemistry. Among all NHCs, CCC-NHC-based on late-transition metal complexes were first developed by our group in 2005 with a unique metalation/transmetalation strategy. Our group also designed the chiral version of these CCC-NHC ligands to synthesize its metal complexes. However, their asymmetric catalytic applications were unknown. Wanting to expand on this work, we first successfully synthesized achiral CCC-NHC pincer complexes and their new catalytic application, as it is economically cheaper than directly working on developing a chiral version for catalysis. Then, different chiral CCC-NHC salts were synthesized based on different chiral arms and N-substituents on NHCs to modify their steric hindrance and electronic structure properties. These precursors were used for their enantioselective application in nucleophilic catalysis. In Chapter II, we will discuss the synthesis of the CCC-NHC pincer Ir (III) dimer complex and its first catalytic application in C−H functionalization of N-methylindoles with alpha-aryl-alpha-diazoacetates at the C-3. The best reaction conditions involve a combination of catalysts and substrates in a specific order. It resulted in the activation of the C-H bond with the formation of a new C-C bond to generate alpha-aryl-alpha-indolyl acetates with more than 99% conversion at room temperature without requiring any additives. The substrate scope and limitations of N-methyl indoles and diazoacetates were also explored. Chapter III will focus on a new modified synthetic route to synthesize and characterize chiral CCC-NHC chloride salts in a shorter synthetic route than the known one. The metalation/transmetalation of chiral CCC-NHC ligands with late transition metals and the initial attempt in asymmetric catalysis will be discussed in Chapter IV. Chapter, V, demonstrated nucleophilic catalysis of CCC-NHC precursors in benzoin condensation of aldehyde. The study started with the evaluation of fifteen different achiral bis-CCC-NHC salts based on triazole, imidazole, and benzimidazole. Further studies with chiral CCC-NHC salts also resulted in more than 99% conversion and 99% ee in benzoin products. The substrate scope of benzaldehyde with different substituents was also explored

Particulate emissions from gasoline direct injection engines

Direct injection spark ignition (DISI) engines are the next generation of gasoline fuelled engines. Their greater fuel economy and reduced CO2 emissions compared with port fuel injection (PFI) engines has led to their popularity. However, DISI engines produce a greater number of particulate matter (PM) emissions than PFI engines. Concern over the health effects of PM emissions, and forthcoming European legislation to regulate them from gasoline powered vehicles has led to an increased interest in the study of PM formation, measurement, and characterisation. A model was developed by Aikawa et al, the PM index, correlating PM emissions with fuel composition. PM emissions are thought to be linked both to the vapour pressure (VP) and the double bond equivalent (DBE) of the components of the fuel. However, there was no independent control of these parameters and the study was undertaken on a PFI engine. In this thesis, experiments have been conducted to validate this model and extend it, as the PN index, to DISI engines. Fuels have been designed using Raoult’s law and UNIFAC (with careful consideration of octane number) such that the DBE and VP of the fuel mix could be varied independently. The design of the fuels was such that the component parts would co-evaporate upon injection into the cylinder, ensuring a homogeneous mixture of the components at the point of ignition. The PN index has been tested on a single cylinder engine, at a matrix of test points, using these model fuels, and their PM emissions have been analysed using a Cambustion DMS500. The results show that the PN index is followed closely using model fuels, provided that these model fuels contain a ‘light-end’ (in this case 5 % v/v n-pentane). Imaging of in-cylinder evaporation and in-cylinder measurement of hydrocarbons shows how the composition of model fuels affects their PM emissions. The PN index has also been tested using commercial fuels on a single cylinder engine and a Jaguar V8 engine; the results again show that the PN index is also an excellent predictor of PN emissions for market fuels from both of these engines. PN emissions have been evaluated from two fuels representing the EU5 reference fuel specification, developed using the PN index to give a difference in PM emissions. Testing these fuels on both a single cylinder engine and a Jaguar V8 engine has shown up to a factor of three variation in observed PN emissions. This has important implications for forthcoming European emissions legislation. The results of these tests were fed into the recommendations for the EU6 reference fuel specification. The PN index has also been investigated in a Jaguar V6 engine with five different fuels with a spread of calculated PN indices over a simulated NEDC. Here the PN emissions have been measured using two PN, and one PM instrument and the results compared. The results show that the trends of the PN index are followed, but not as closely as predicted. Detailed analysis shows that this discrepancy is due to other effects, for example cold start, dominating the PN emissions in certain phases. PN emissions have been measured from a highly boosted engine at a variety of operating points using 14 different fuels. It has been shown that for a large variety of engine operating parameters PN emissions from highly boosted engines behave as expected. When changing the fuels, the results show that a variation of over three orders of magnitude can be observed. The predictions of the PN index are inconclusive however, with further work suggested to fully evaluate the PN index on highly boosted engines.

Digital FSK/AM/PM Sub-Carrier Modulator on a 6U-VME-Card

International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 28-31, 1996 / Town and Country Hotel and Convention Center, San Diego, California / Aerospace Report No. TOR-0059(6110-01)-3, section 1.3.3 outlines the design and performance requirements of SGLS (Space Ground Link Subsystem) uplink services equipment. This modulation system finds application in the U.S. Air Force satellite uplink commanding system. The SGLS signal generator is specified as an FSK (Frequency Shift Keyed)/AM (Amplitude Modulation)/PM (Phase Modulation) sub-carrier modulator. GDP Space Systems has implemented, on a single 6U-VME card, a SGLS signal generator. The modulator accepts data from several possible sources and uses the data to key one of three FSK tone frequencies. This ternary FSK signal is amplitude modulated by a synchronized triangle wave running at one half the data rate. The FSK/AM signal is then used to phase modulate a tunable HF (High-Frequency) sub-carrier. A digital design approach and the availability of integrated circuits with a high level of functionality enabled the realization of a SGLS signal generator on a single VME card. An analog implementation would have required up to three rack-mounted units to generate the same signal. The digital design improve performance, economy and reliability over analog approaches. This paper describes the advantages of a digital FSK/AM/PM modulation method, as well as DDS (Direct Digital Synthesis) and digital phase-lock techniques.

Caractérisation et impacts des émissions de polluants du transport routier : Apports méthodologiques et cas d'études en Rhône Alpes.

L'impact des particules fines (PM10-PM2.5) sur la santé a été largement étudié depuis de nombreuses années, notamment pour les sites de proximité automobile. De nombreux dépassements de la valeur limite en PM10 imposée par les directives européennes ont lieu en France et en Europe, en milieu urbain et plus fréquemment en proximité automobile. Les émissions véhiculaires sont une des sources majeures de particules. Ces émissions proviennent à la fois des échappements (TE) mais aussi des émissions hors échappement (TNE) (abrasion des freins, des pneus et de la route, resuspension des poussières de la chaussée dû au déplacement des véhicules...). En France, très peu d'études en proximité automobile ont été effectuées. Les études de déconvolution des sources en France et en Europe s'appuient la plupart du temps sur des parcs automobiles non adaptés (parc américain) ou trop anciens. De plus, seule la source TE est considérée, ce qui sous-estime largement la contribution véhiculaire aux PM10. La meilleure connaissance de la formation, de la caractérisation et de la quantification des particules émises par le trafic est devenue primordiale. L'objectif final étant la détermination des contributions des émissions véhiculaires TE et TNE aux sources primaires de particules, la caractérisation précise de ces sources est primordial. Pour cela, la recherche de traceurs véhiculaires en phases gaz et particulaire a constitué une grosse partie de ce travail. La combinaison de l'étude sur banc à rouleau de cinq véhicules bien représentés dans le parc automobile roulant français et de l'étude effectuée en proximité automobile (Rocade Sud de Grenoble) a constitué le socle de ce travail. Dans la première étude, certains composés chimiques sont apparus comme indicateurs des émissions TE (EC, HAP légers, profils d'alcanes typiques, quelques métaux comme Fe, Cu etc.). Des différences importantes sont observées entre les véhicules diesel sans filtre à particules (FAP) et les véhicules essence et diesel sans FAP. La seconde étude, comparant le site trafic (Grenoble-Echirolles) avec un site de fond urbain (Grenoble- Les Frênes), a mis en évidence certains composés chimiques comme spécifiques des sources TNE et TE sur la base des connaissances acquises avec les mesures sur banc et sur l'enrichissement de certains composés par rapport au site de fond (EC, Cu, Fe, Sn, Mn...). On peut souligner certains enrichissements majeurs comme EC (78%), Cu (82%), Fe (88%), etc. La résolution temporelle a été faite sur une base de 4h, permettant ainsi une caractérisation chimique détaillée en fonction des heures de pointe et "creuses". Une troisième étude, en site trafic également (Grenoble-Le Rondeau) mais sous influence du salage en hiver, est venue compléter nos recherches. Enfin, en nous appuyant sur les résultats de la première partie, nous avons cherché à déconvoluer les sources véhiculaires TE et TNE (Echirolles et Le Rondeau) au moyen d'un modèle statistique d'analyses multivariées, la PMF (Positive Matrix Factorization), apportant ainsi la contribution possible de ces sources aux PM10. Les émissions véhiculaires (TNE+ TE) y contribuent à 34% à Echirolles et à 53% au Rondeau. Quelques incertitudes sont discutées par rapport aux résultats trouvés avec ceux provenant de l'étude géochimique détaillée en première partie.

Modélisation de la formation des aérosols organiques secondaires dans les régions polluées

Les aérosols atmosphériques (par exemple les matières particulaires ou PM) sont une source majeure d’incertitude dans les modèles climatiques. Plusieurs études ont démontré que des concentrations élevées de PM réduisent l’espérance de vie. Les aérosols organiques secondaires (Secondary Organic Aerosols en anglais, SOA) sont formés dans l’atmosphère à partir des précurseurs gazeux à travers les réactions chimiques et les SOA représentent des composants majeurs de la masse des PM à l’échelle mondiale. Afin de mieux comprendre les processus chimiques responsables de la formation des SOA, un modèle en 0-D est élaboré pour simuler dynamiquement l’évolution des espèces organiques dans une parcelle d’air qui subit une oxydation photochimique produisant des SOA. Le modèle incorpore des paramètres récemment publiés pour la formation des SOA à partir des composés organiques volatiles (VOCs), ainsi que des composés organiques semi-volatiles et des composés organiques à volatilité intermédiaire (SVOCs et IVOCs). Le modèle est restreint par plusieurs mesures de précurseurs, incluant des mesures récemment développées qui fournissent des contraintes grandement améliorées sur les concentrations des précurseurs, et les prédictions sont comparées par rapport aux mesures des SOA prises au cours de la campagne CalNex. Lorsque les effets des pertes sur les parois des chambres à smog sont considérés pour les rendements des VOCs, la quantité et la vitesse de la formation des SOA dans le modèle sont plus en accord avec les observations. Les résultats de cette étude indiquent que les SVOCs et les IVOCs primaires sont responsables de la majorité (70 à 86 %) de la masse de SOA modélisée, accentuant leur grande contribution en tant que précurseurs des SOA. Cependant, la masse de SOA simulée est sous-estimée à des temps courts d’oxydation lorsque comparée aux données sur le terrain, mais à des temps plus longs, un accord modèle/mesures est observé. Cet écart peut être dû à un ΔIVOC/ΔCO ratio d’émission bas ou une sous-estimation basse des constantes d’oxydations des IVOCs, ce qui met en évidence la nécessité de poursuivre les études sur le terrain et dans les laboratoires de ces composés. / Atmospheric aerosols (i.e. particulate matter or PM) are a major source of uncertainty in climate models. Many studies have also shown that elevated concentrations of PM reduce life expectancies. Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) is formed in the atmosphere from gaseous precursors through chemical reactions and SOA represents a major component of PM mass globally. To better understand the chemical pathways responsible for SOA formation, a box model is designed to simulate dynamically the evolution of organic species in an air parcel as it undergoes photochemical oxidation producing SOA. The model incorporates recently published parameterizations for the formation of SOA from volatile organic compounds (VOCs), as well as from semi-volatile and intermediate-volatility organic compounds (SVOCs and IVOCs). The model is constrained by several measurements of precursors, including recently developed measurements that provide greatly improved constraints on precursor concentrations, and the predications are compared against measurements of SOA taken during the CalNex campaign. When accounting for the effect of chamber wall-losses on VOC yields, the amount and rate of SOA formation in the model is more consistent with observations. The results of this study also indicate that the primary SVOCs and IVOCs are responsible for a majority (70 – 86 %) of the model SOA mass, emphasizing their high contribution as SOA precursors. However, the SOA mass predicted is underestimated at shorter photochemical ages when compared to field measurements, but at longer ages, model/measurement agreement is observed. This bias may be due to low IVOC/CO emissions ratios or low estimated IVOC oxidation rate constants, which highlights the need for further field and laboratory studies of these compounds.

Konsekvensen av sena ändringar i byggproduktionen : En utredning av ändrings-PM under produktionen / The consequences of late changes in the production of a building : An investigation of revision memos during the production

This thesis project examines changes to building documents during the product development in the construction process, which is referred as revision memos in this report. The study is made in cooperation with Serneke and is therefore limited to project within this company. Furthermore, the information in this study is based on relevant literature as well as interviews, a poll and material from three of Serneke´s projects. The results show that the examined projects have exceeded the estimated design cost due to changes made during production. By investigating the revision memos, the conclusion was that performing construction, commercial projects and rebuilding projects generate more revision memos as well as the architect and constructor had the greatest number and most expensive revision memos. It also appears that the number of revision memos of other disciplines varies between projects. Furthermore, the design process seems to generate many mistakes that appear in the production, which means that an improved design process with experience feedback and collision control should detect mistakes at an earlier stage. Recommendation for future projects is to make use of the contractors knowledge of production early in the design stage, to use experience feedback and collision control, to introduce a date for last additions, to use Swedish standard when establishing revision memos and to not execute changes before a revision memo is published. In conclusion of this project follows a few recommendations for continued investigation of this field of study. / Detta arbete undersöker ändringar av handlingar som sker vid produktframtagningen i byggprocessen, vilket benämns ändrings-PM i denna rapport. Syftet är att kartlägga problematiken kring ändrings- och tilläggsarbeten i ett sent skede och målet är att öka medvetenheten gällande ändrings-PM och dess konsekvenser. Arbetet genomförs under 10 veckor och begränsas därför till att undersöka projekt inom Serneke. Vidare kommer olika entreprenadformer och olika projekttyper att jämföras detta då de olika förutsättningarna i projekten förväntas generera olika mängder ändrings-PM. Metoden för detta arbete är dels en litteraturstudie, som förklarar olika begrepp och tillvägagångssätt, samt intervjuer och enkät som kompletteras med underlag från tre av Sernekes projekt. I resultatet framgår det att de undersökta projektens bedömda projekterings-kostnad överstigits på grund av ändringar som skett under produktionen. Sammanställningen av ändrings-PM från projekten samt enkätsvaren visar också att arkitekten och konstruktören har flest antal samt dyrast ändrings-PM. Vidare framgår det att övriga discipliners ändrings-PM varierar i antal mellan projekt. Vad gäller entreprenadform och projekttyp framgick det av enkäten och intervjuerna att utförandeentreprenader, kommersiella projekt och ROT-projekt rimligtvis genererar mer ändrings-PM dock kunde detta inte stärkas av något ytterligare material. Däremot kunde kommunikationsverktyget Byggnet undersökas med slutsatsen att det är ett väl fungerande informationssystem vid korrekt användning. Vidare anses projekteringen generera många fel som dyker upp i produktionen, vilket medför att en förbättrad projektering med erfarenhetsåterföring och kollisionskontroll borde upptäcka misstag i ett tidigare skede. För framtida projekt rekommenderas att nyttja entreprenörens erfarenhet av produktionen i projekteringen, att använda sig av erfarenhetsåterföring och kollisionskontroll, att införa ett datum för sista tillägg, att använda svensk standard vid upprättande av ändrings-PM samt att utföra ändringar efter ett publicerat ändrings-PM. Genom att vidare undersöka flera projekt med olika entreprenadformer och projekttyper skulle en kartläggning kunde göras för antalet ändrings-PM och hur de påverkar projektets kostnad och tidplan.

Avaliação dos constituintes e do potencial mutagênico do material particulado oriundo do beneficiamento artesanal da castanha do caju / Assessment of the components and mutagenic potential of particulate matter from artisanal cashew nut roasting

DA CASTANHA DE CAJU Apesar da importância social e econômica do beneficiamento da castanha de caju para o Rio Grande do Norte, a produção ainda é realizada de forma artesanal. Para a coleta da amêndoa da castanha é necessário assá-la. A fumaça gerada durante a queima da castanha possui altas concentrações de Material Particulado (MP) e esse MP produzido é inalado diariamente por grupos familiares por um período que pode exceder a 10 horas diárias. Em geral, os poluentes atmosféricos oriundos da queima de biomassa são potencialmente nocivos a saúde, relacionando-se com eventos de genotoxicidade, aumento no número de internações hospitalares e ambulatoriais, e mortalidade por doenças cardiovasculares e respiratórias. O presente trabalho teve três objetivos principais: 1° Realizar medições na concentração de O3, NO2, MP, Black Carbon (BC) e composição elementar do MP 2,5 provenientes da queima da castanha. 2° Identificar o potencial mutagênico associado ao beneficiamento artesanal da castanha de caju durante a estação seca, chuvosa e intermediária no RN (Brasil) com o auxílio do teste de micronúcleo (MN) em Tradescantia pallida. 3° Verificar o efeito mutagênico da atividade em MN de células esfoliadas de mucosa oral de trabalhadores envolvidos no beneficiamento. Para isso, três locais distintos foram definidos como pontos testes: Ponto 1. Comunidade do Amarelão, situada no perímetro rural do município de João Câmara-RN (local onde ocorre a queima da castanha de caju); Ponto 2. Fazenda Santa Luzia, situada próxima à região de queima da castanha de caju (local com as mesma condições ambientais do Ponto 1, porém sem a influência da atividade); Ponto 3. Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), zona urbana de Natal-RN. Os resultados obtidos para o O3 e NO2 não excederam os limites estabelecidos pela legislação brasileira. No entanto, os resultados da medição de MP obtidos com o medidor portátil \"DUSTTRAK (TM)Aerossol Monitor \" indicou que entre as 8 medições de MP realizadas no Ponto 1, 7 excederam o nível de exposição definido como \"estado de emergência \"descrito na legislação brasileira (500µg/m 3 ), diferindo significativamente dos resultados obtidos nos Pontos 2 e 3 (6µg/m 3 ). As avaliações realizadas nos meses de Janeiro, Maio e Setembro de 2009, com o Mini-sampler confirmaram os resultados previamente obtidos com o \"DUSTTRAK (TM)Aerossol Monitor \".O valor médio de MP 2,5 (Jan - 548,412 µg/m 3 ; Mai - 1022,232 µg/m 3 ; Set - 1291,946 µg/m 3 ) e BC (Jan - 46,798 µg/m 3 ; Mai 70,068- µg/m 3 ; Set - 69,432 µg/m 3 ) obtido nas três campanhas para o Ponto 1 foram significativamente maiores que o Ponto 2 e 3. Para o Ponto 1 os elementos Si, S, Cl, K, Ni, Cu e Zn quando presentes estiveram em concentrações superiores aos Pontos 2 e 3. Os testes de genotoxicidade com T. pallida indicou aumento significativo no número de MN em todas as campanhas. Os resultados com células de mucosa oral humana corroboraram com o biomonitor vegetal, sendo verificado aumento significativo na freqüência de MN. Os resultados obtidos caracterizaram um dos piores níveis de exposição humana ao MP já relatado na literatura, excedendo amplamente os limites da legislação brasileira assim como os da OMS. Os resultados obtidos apresentaram um problema ocupacional grave, sendo necessária intervenção imediata dos gestores públicos na tentativa de minimizar os efeitos lesivos da atividade. / x Despite the social and economic importance of the processing of cashew nuts to Rio Grande do Norte, the production is still carried out artisanally. To collect the almond nut is necessary to roasting. The smoke generated during the burning of the nut has high concentrations of particulate matter (PM) and the PM produced is inhaled daily by families for a period which can exceed 10 hours a day. In general, air pollutants come from burning biomass are potentially harmful to health, relating to genotoxicity events, increase in the number of hospitalizations and outpatient, and mortality from cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. This project had three main objectives: 1 Make measurements in the concentration of O3, NO2, MP, Black Carbon (BC) and elemental composition of the PM 2.5 from the combustion of the cashew nut. 2 Identify the mutagenic potential associated with artisanally processing of cashew nut during the dry season, wet and intermediate in RN (Brazil) by using a micronucleus (MN) bioassay of T. pallida tetrads. 3 To investigate the effect of mutagenic activity in exfoliated cells of oral mucosa of workers involved in processing. For this, three test sites were chosen for this purpose: Site 1. the Amarelão community - where the roasting occurs, Site 2. the Santa Luzia farm - an area near the roasting site, though without direct influence on the process and Site 3. the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) - an urban area of Natal, Brazil. The results obtained for the O3 and NO2 do not exceed the limits established by Brazilian legislation. However, the results of the measurement of PM obtained with the portable meter \"DUSTTRAK (TM) Aerosol Monitor\" has indicated that between 8 PM measurements made at Site 1, 7 exceeded the level of exposure defined as \"emergency rule\" described in the Brazilian legislation (500 ? g/m 3 ), differing significantly from the results obtained in Sites 2 and 3 (6 ? g/m 3 ). Evaluations in January, May and September 2009, with the Mini-sampler confirmed the results previously obtained with the \"DUSTTRAK (TM)Aerosol Monitor.The average value of 2.5 MP (Jan - 548.412 mg/m 3 ; May - 1022.232 mg/m 3 ; Set - 1291.946 mg/m 3 ) and BC (Jan - 46.798 mg/m 3 ; May 70.068 - mg/m 3 ; Set - 69.432 mg/m 3 ) obtained in the three campaigns for Site 1 were significantly higher than the Site 2 and 3. To the Site 1 the elements Si, S, Cl, K, Ni, Cu and Zn when present were at concentrations higher than the Sites 2 and 3. Genotoxicity tests with T. pallida showed a significant increase in the number of MN in all campaigns. The results with cells of human oral mucosa have confirmed the biomonitoring, and found significant increase in the frequency of MN. The results marked one of the worst levels of human exposure to PM has been reported in the literature and greatly exceeded the limits of the Brazilian legislation as well as the WHO. The results showed a serious occupational problem, requiring immediate intervention of public officials in an attempt to minimize the harmful effects of the activity.

Em geral, os poluentes atmosféricos oriundos da queima de biomassa são potencialmente nocivos a saúde, relacionando-se com eventos de genotoxicidade, aumento no número de internações hospitalares e ambulatoriais, e mortalidade por doenças cardiovasculares e respiratórias. O presente trabalho teve três objetivos principais: 1° Realizar medições na concentração de O3, NO2, MP, Black Carbon (BC) e composição elementar do MP 2,5 provenientes da queima da castanha. 2° Identificar o potencial mutagênico associado ao beneficiamento artesanal da castanha de caju durante a estação seca, chuvosa e intermediária no RN (Brasil) com o auxílio do teste de micronúcleo (MN) em Tradescantia pallida. 3° Verificar o efeito mutagênico da atividade em MN de células esfoliadas de mucosa oral de trabalhadores envolvidos no beneficiamento. Para isso, três locais distintos foram definidos como pontos testes: Ponto 1. Comunidade do Amarelão, situada no perímetro rural do município de João Câmara-RN (local onde ocorre a queima da castanha de caju); Ponto 2. Fazenda Santa Luzia, situada próxima à região de queima da castanha de caju (local com as mesma condições ambientais do Ponto 1, porém sem a influência da atividade); Ponto 3. Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), zona urbana de Natal-RN. Os resultados obtidos para o O3 e NO2 não excederam os limites estabelecidos pela legislação brasileira. No entanto, os resultados da medição de MP obtidos com o medidor portátil \"DUSTTRAK (TM)Aerossol Monitor \" indicou que entre as 8 medições de MP realizadas no Ponto 1, 7 excederam o nível de exposição definido como \"estado de emergência \"descrito na legislação brasileira (500µg/m 3 ), diferindo significativamente dos resultados obtidos nos Pontos 2 e 3 (6µg/m 3 ). As avaliações realizadas nos meses de Janeiro, Maio e Setembro de 2009, com o Mini-sampler confirmaram os resultados previamente obtidos com o \"DUSTTRAK (TM)Aerossol Monitor \".O valor médio de MP 2,5 (Jan - 548,412 µg/m 3 ; Mai - 1022,232 µg/m 3 ; Set - 1291,946 µg/m 3 ) e BC (Jan - 46,798 µg/m 3 ; Mai 70,068- µg/m 3 ; Set - 69,432 µg/m 3 ) obtido nas três campanhas para o Ponto 1 foram significativamente maiores que o Ponto 2 e 3. Para o Ponto 1 os elementos Si, S, Cl, K, Ni, Cu e Zn quando presentes estiveram em concentrações superiores aos Pontos 2 e 3. Os testes de genotoxicidade com T. pallida indicou aumento significativo no número de MN em todas as campanhas. Os resultados com células de mucosa oral humana corroboraram com o biomonitor vegetal, sendo verificado aumento significativo na freqüência de MN. Os resultados obtidos caracterizaram um dos piores níveis de exposição humana ao MP já relatado na literatura, excedendo amplamente os limites da legislação brasileira assim como os da OMS. Os resultados obtidos apresentaram um problema ocupacional grave, sendo necessária intervenção imediata dos gestores públicos na tentativa de minimizar os efeitos lesivos da atividade. / x Despite the social and economic importance of the processing of cashew nuts to Rio Grande do Norte, the production is still carried out artisanally. To collect the almond nut is necessary to roasting. The smoke generated during the burning of the nut has high concentrations of particulate matter (PM) and the PM produced is inhaled daily by families for a period which can exceed 10 hours a day. In general, air pollutants come from burning biomass are potentially harmful to health, relating to genotoxicity events, increase in the number of hospitalizations and outpatient, and mortality from cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. This project had three main objectives: 1 Make measurements in the concentration of O3, NO2, MP, Black Carbon (BC) and elemental composition of the PM 2.5 from the combustion of the cashew nut. 2 Identify the mutagenic potential associated with artisanally processing of cashew nut during the dry season, wet and intermediate in RN (Brazil) by using a micronucleus (MN) bioassay of T. pallida tetrads. 3 To investigate the effect of mutagenic activity in exfoliated cells of oral mucosa of workers involved in processing. For this, three test sites were chosen for this purpose: Site 1. the Amarelão community - where the roasting occurs, Site 2. the Santa Luzia farm - an area near the roasting site, though without direct influence on the process and Site 3. the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) - an urban area of Natal, Brazil. The results obtained for the O3 and NO2 do not exceed the limits established by Brazilian legislation. However, the results of the measurement of PM obtained with the portable meter \"DUSTTRAK (TM) Aerosol Monitor\" has indicated that between 8 PM measurements made at Site 1, 7 exceeded the level of exposure defined as \"emergency rule\" described in the Brazilian legislation (500 ? g/m 3 ), differing significantly from the results obtained in Sites 2 and 3 (6 ? g/m 3 ). Evaluations in January, May and September 2009, with the Mini-sampler confirmed the results previously obtained with the \"DUSTTRAK (TM)Aerosol Monitor.The average value of 2.5 MP (Jan - 548.412 mg/m 3 ; May - 1022.232 mg/m 3 ; Set - 1291.946 mg/m 3 ) and BC (Jan - 46.798 mg/m 3 ; May 70.068 - mg/m 3 ; Set - 69.432 mg/m 3 ) obtained in the three campaigns for Site 1 were significantly higher than the Site 2 and 3. To the Site 1 the elements Si, S, Cl, K, Ni, Cu and Zn when present were at concentrations higher than the Sites 2 and 3. Genotoxicity tests with T. pallida showed a significant increase in the number of MN in all campaigns. The results with cells of human oral mucosa have confirmed the biomonitoring, and found significant increase in the frequency of MN. The results marked one of the worst levels of human exposure to PM has been reported in the literature and greatly exceeded the limits of the Brazilian legislation as well as the WHO. The results showed a serious occupational problem, requiring immediate intervention of public officials in an attempt to minimize the harmful effects of the activity.

La région Caraïbe est régulièrement survolée par des masses d'air chargées en poussières désertiquesd'origines saharienne et sub-saharienne. Pour quatre îles de l'arc antillais : Porto Rico, Guadeloupe, Martinique etBarbade; nous avons évalué l'origine de la pollution particulaire et son impact sur la qualité de l'air, en effectuant uneétude statistique des évènements de poussière qui s'appuie sur les réseaux de mesure de qualité de l'air implantés surchacune des îles, sur le réseau international de mesures photométriques AERONET et sur les données deradiosondages réalisés localement. La première étape de notre travail, a visé à définir ce que l'on pouvait qualifier« d'épisode de poussières désertiques» dans notre région en établissant des critères utilisant le jeu de données dontnous disposions. Deuxièmement, nous avons réalisé une étude climatologique des évènements poussiéreux dans laCaraïbe au cours de la dernière décennie (2006-2016). Le troisième axe de la thèse repose sur la caractérisation de lataille des particules afin de mettre en relief les effets du transport à longue distance. Nous avons clôturé notre étudepar la description de la structure verticale de l'atmosphère de la zone tropicale en situation de « brumes de poussièredésertique » afin d'observer les effets thermodynamiques des aérosols minéraux sur la couche atmosphérique. Ladéfinition des évènements de brumes désertique que nous avons adoptée nous a permis de prendre en considérationune grande partie des évènements poussiéreux affectant l'arc antillais, ce qui nous a amené à mieux cerner le cycle detranspon des poussièl'es désertiques au terme d'une étude basée sur onze années de données. / The Caribbean region is regularly flown over by desert dust air masses (Saharan Air Layer) corne fromSaharan and sub-Saharan area. For four islands of the West Indies arc: Puerto Rico, Guadeloupe, Martinique andBarbados; we assessed the origin of polluting particles and their impact on air quality, by performing a statistical andclimatological study of desert dust events. We therefore based on the air quality measurement networks, theinternational AEronet RObotic NETwork (AERONET) photometric measurements installed on each of these islands.And finally, this study builds on sounding data produced locally.The first step in our work was to define and describe an "desert dust episode" in the tropical region. Thus, we studiedthe relationship of correlation between Aerosols Optical Depth (AOD), Angstrom Exponent (AE, characterizing theparticle size) and Particulate Matter 10 microns or Jess in diameter (PM10 data). On the other hand, the radiativeproperties (Single Scattering Albedo, refractive indexes) have been used to highlight sea sait contribution (coarseparticle just as dust particle) that significantly influences PM10 measurement due to the geographical context ofCaribbean islands. Our investigations led us to propose a daily PM 10 threshold at 35 μg m·3 that mainly associatedwith desert dust phenomenon. This latter is more suited for the Lesser Antilles compared to the European PM10threshold related to desert dust events: 50 μg m·3.As a result, a climatological study of dusty events in the Caribbean during the last decade (2006-2016) is carried out.Four dust seasons were identified: the high dust season (May to August), the low dust season (November to February,and two intermediate periods (March to April, September to October). We then examine dust exportation fromAfrican coasts toward the Lesser Antilles (Puerto Rico, Guadeloupe Martinique and Barbados) by mean of backtrajectories[Hybrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) mode\] displaying atmosphericcirculation day-to-day over the Atlantic Ocean.This analysis enabled us to better understand the seasonal cycle of desert dust transportation, specific to each island(Puerto Rico, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Barbados); while most of the previous studies treats average data including thewhole Caribbean zone. lt emerges that islands are not affected by dust events similarly, i.e. by intensity of events andits includes some variation in dust periods.Lastly, we describe the vertical structure of the tropical zone atmosphere in situation of "desert dust events" and"Non-desert dust event" to observe the thermodynamic effects of minerai aerosols on the Caribbean atmosphericlayer. This analysis allowed us to consider desert dust aerosols effects on the thermodynamic parameters(Temperature and humidity) during the dry-season (November to April) named "câreme" and the wet season (May toOctober) named "hivernage".
