Second Order Sufficient Optimality Conditions for Nonlinear Parabolic Control Problems with State Constraints

Raymond, Jean-Pierre, Tröltzsch, Fredi 30 October 1998 (has links)
In this paper, optimal control problems for semilinear parabolic equations with distributed and boundary controls are considered. Pointwise constraints on the control and on the state are given. Main emphasis is laid on the discussion of second order sufficient optimality conditions. Sufficiency for local optimality is verified under different assumptions imposed on the dimension of the domain and on the smoothness of the given data.

Group actions and ergodic theory on Banach function spaces / Richard John de Beer

De Beer, Richard John January 2014 (has links)
This thesis is an account of our study of two branches of dynamical systems theory, namely the mean and pointwise ergodic theory. In our work on mean ergodic theorems, we investigate the spectral theory of integrable actions of a locally compact abelian group on a locally convex vector space. We start with an analysis of various spectral subspaces induced by the action of the group. This is applied to analyse the spectral theory of operators on the space generated by measures on the group. We apply these results to derive general Tauberian theorems that apply to arbitrary locally compact abelian groups acting on a large class of locally convex vector spaces which includes Fr echet spaces. We show how these theorems simplify the derivation of Mean Ergodic theorems. Next we turn to the topic of pointwise ergodic theorems. We analyse the Transfer Principle, which is used to generate weak type maximal inequalities for ergodic operators, and extend it to the general case of -compact locally compact Hausdor groups acting measure-preservingly on - nite measure spaces. We show how the techniques developed here generate various weak type maximal inequalities on di erent Banach function spaces, and how the properties of these function spaces in- uence the weak type inequalities that can be obtained. Finally, we demonstrate how the techniques developed imply almost sure pointwise convergence of a wide class of ergodic averages. Our investigations of these two parts of ergodic theory are uni ed by the techniques used - locally convex vector spaces, harmonic analysis, measure theory - and by the strong interaction of the nal results, which are obtained in greater generality than hitherto achieved. / PhD (Mathematics), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014

Introduction to some modes of convergence : Theory and applications

Bolibrzuch, Milosz January 2017 (has links)
This thesis aims to provide a brief exposition of some chosen modes of convergence; namely uniform convergence, pointwise convergence and L1 convergence. Theoretical discussion is complemented by simple applications to scientific computing. The latter include solving differential equations with various methods and estimating the convergence, as well as modelling problematic situations to investigate odd behaviors of usually convergent methods.

Pointwise approach for texture analysis and characterization from very high resolution remote sensing images / Approche ponctuelle pour l'analyse et la caractérisation de texture dans les images de télédétection à très haute résolution

Pham, Minh Tân 20 September 2016 (has links)
This thesis work proposes a novel pointwise approach for texture analysis in the scope of very high resolution (VHR) remote sensing imagery. This approach takes into consideration only characteristic pixels, not all pixels of the image, to represent and characterize textural features. Due to the fact that increasing the spatial resolution of satellite sensors leads to the lack of stationarity hypothesis in the acquired images, such an approach becomes relevant since only the interaction and characteristics of keypoints are exploited. Moreover, as this technique does not need to consider all pixels inside the image like classical dense approaches, it is more capable to deal with large-size image data offered by VHR remote sensing acquisition systems. In this work, our pointwise strategy is performed by exploiting the local maximum and local minimum pixels (in terms of intensity) extracted from the image. It is integrated into several texture analysis frameworks with the help of different techniques and methods such as the graph theory, the covariance-based approach, the geometric distance measurement, etc. As a result, a variety of texture-based applications using remote sensing data (both VHR optical and radar images) are tackled such as image retrieval, segmentation, classification, and change detection, etc. By performing dedicated experiments to each thematic application, the effectiveness and relevance of the proposed approach are confirmed and validated.

Nonlinear and Hybrid Feedbacks with Continuous-Time Linear Systems / Rétroactions non linéaires et hybrides avec systèmes linéaires à temps continu

Cocetti, Matteo 21 May 2019 (has links)
In this thesis we study linear time-invariant systems feedback interconnected with three specific nonlinear blocks; a play/stop operator, a switching-reset mechanism, and an adaptive dead-zone. This setup resembles the Lure problem studied in the absolute stability framework, but the types of nonlinearities considered here do not satisfy (in general) a sector condition. These nonlinear blocks give rise to a whole range of interesting phenomena, such as compact sets of equilibria, hybrid omega-limit sets, and state constraints. Throughout the thesis, we use the hybrid systems formalism to describe these phenomena and to analyze these loops. We obtain sharp stability conditions that can be formulated as linear matrix inequalities, thus verifiable with numerically efficient solvers. Finally, we apply the theoretical findings to two automotive applications.

Some Polyharmonic equations on Manifolds and Blow-up Analysis of a Hardy-Sobolev equation

Mazumdar, Saikat 27 June 2016 (has links)
This memoir can be divided into two parts: Part 1: In this part we obtain some existence results for conformally invariant polyharmonic boundary value problems on a compact Riemannian manifold with or without boundary. In particular we show that the best constant of the Sobolev embedding on manifolds is same as the euclidean one, and as a consequence prove the existence of minimum energy solutions when the energy functionnal goes below a quantified threshold. Next we show the existence of high energy solution using the topological method of Coron. We generalize the decomposition of Palais Smale sequences as a sum of bubble on manifolds with or without boundary, a result in the spirit of Struwe's celebrated 1984 result and also an extension of PL Lions concentration compactness result on manifolds. Part2: In this part we do a blow-up analysis of the nonlinear elliptic Hardy-Sobolev equation with critical growth and vanishing boundary singularity. We assume that our equation does not admit minimising solutions, and study the asymptotic behaviour of a sequence of solution to the perturbed equation. Here the perturbation is the singularity at the origin. First we obtain optimal pointwise controlon the sequence and then obtain more precise informations on the localization of the blow-up point using the Pohozaev identity

2-microlocal spaces with variable integrability

Ferreira Gonçalves, Helena Daniela 15 May 2018 (has links)
In this work we study several important properties of the 2-microlocal Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces with variable integrability. Due to the richness of the weight sequence used to measure smoothness, this scale of function spaces incorporates a wide range of function spaces, of which we mention the spaces with variable smoothness. Within the existing characterizations of these spaces, the characterization via smooth atoms is undoubtedly one of the most used when it comes to obtain new results in varied directions. In this work we make use of such characterization to prove several embedding results, such as Sobolev, Franke and Jawerth embeddings, and also to study traces on hyperplanes. Despite the considerable benefits of resorting on the smooth atomic decomposition, there are still some limitations when one tries to use it in order to prove some specific results, such as pointwise multipliers and diffeomorphisms assertions. The non-smooth atomic characterization proved in this work overcome these problems, due to the weaker conditions of the (non-smooth) atoms. Moreover, it also allows us to give an intrinsic characterization of the 2-microlocal Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces with variable integrability on the class of regular domains, in which connected bounded Lipschitz domains are included.
