Os apontamentos (1972 - 1975) - Crônicas Políticas : Portugal segundo José Saramago /Sgarbi, Elielson Antonio. January 2020 (has links)

Abstract: This study analyses de imperial aspects of the politics of D. Afonso V, king of Portugal (1448-1481). The first part of the work is composed by the study of the dilatation of the juridical notion of imperium, concerning the atlantics and africans Portuguese possessions The second part studies how the historian of the king, Zurara, presented Portugal as an heir of the Roman and Visigoth empires and how the notion of elected kingdom, that carries a strong sense of universal monarchy, made part of the fundamental political ideals that sustained the expansion in Africa and at the Atlantic islands. At the last part, we present the imperial intents of the king through the study of his external politic with the Holy Empire and the Crown of Castile. The marriage of the sister's king, Leonor, with the emperor Frederick III, Habsburg, is the first aspect analysed. The silence about this union gave us means to understand why the ideal of Empire of the Portuguese king was very different of the roman germanic reference. Finally, we study the war
between Portugal and Castile, against Isabel, the future Catholic queen, during the period 1475 and 1479. The king of Portugal tried to assume the government of the Crown, by marrying Jane, princess and heir of the Castile. Also, the plains signed between Louis XI, king of France and Afonso V, in 1475, shows that the portuguese king and French king intended to prepare a war agains Crown of Aragon and share their territories. The politic of Afonso inside Iberia explicated his aim of "re-unify" the peninsula under his control. / Doutorado / Historia / Doutor em História

The integration of Spanish and Portuguese organ music within the liturgy from the latter half of the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuryNelson, Bernadette January 1987 (has links)
Spanish and Portuguese organ music still remains a relatively unchartered area escaping the attention of most general assessments of European musical history. The work which has been done in this field has tended towards stylistic appreciations of the published large-scale compositions and the compilation of short biographies of prominent musicians. No extensive investigation has yet been undertaken which deals with such fundamental issues as the role of the organist and the origins and function of the extant organ repertory, of which a large proportion lies dormant in manuscripts, within the liturgy. Indeed, there is no monograph about organists and organ music in the Iberian peninsula as a whole. The overall aim of this thesis is to provide a musical background and liturgical context for short organ pieces called <u>versos</u> which were thoroughly integrated within a musical celebration of the Offices. For this end, a variety of musical and documentary material has been examined: practical sources of organ music; plainchant manuals; ceremonials and musical treatises. To an enormous extent this organ music was subject to long-standing liturgical customs and legislation, as well as to strongly defined traditions of musical composition. The prescriptions to the organist given in the ecclesiastical constitutions and how these may have been realized in the Canonical Hours and in the Mass constitutes the essence of part two of this thesis. This interpretation of musico-liturgical practices has entailed an examination of the relationship between plainchant and the organ verset and the technicalities of mode and tranposition which were involved when alternating the organ with choral plainchant. An analysis is also made of the musical development of versets based on the psalm-tones, organ hymns (the <u>Pange lingua</u> in particular) and the 'organ mass'. An anthology of transcriptions complementing this discussion is contained in a separate volume. As a counterbalance to the analytical discussion in part two, part one provides an historical and cultural background to the subject. An assessment is made of the contribution made by individual organists and organ 'schools' and some consideration is made of the extent to which both royal and ecclesiastical patronage was responsible for the livelihood of music and the arts.

Abstract: Between the late 19th and the early 20th centuries, in the context of their great migration, a few thousand Syrian-Lebanese travelled to and settled in West Africa. All over the region they became middlemen in a then growing trade circuit that carried local produce to the European industry and European manufactures to that new market. Concomitant to the expansion of external trade in the region was the intensification of imperial European states' military and administrative presence there and in the rest of the African continent. With the global and regional contexts constantly in the horizon, this dissertation presents a survey of the settlement process of Syrian-Lebanese migrants in Portuguese Guinea (present Guinea- Bissau), focusing the years of the first Portuguese republican period, between 1910 and 1926. The theme is approached through the analysis of written documents produced in the context of the Portuguese colonial administration in the territory. The material allows of an interpretation of the process in which the ambiguity of the condition of stranger plays a central role.

This doctoral dissertation discusses the problems faced by former slaves and their descendants, which is to have the possession and the enjoyment of freedom. This work analyses the practice of re-enslavement, illicit captivity, and illegal extension of slavery in hundreds of legal actions, that took place between 1720 and 1819 in two places of the Portuguese Empire. The two cities are Mariana, an important slavery center in the American continent and Lisbon, a metropolitan capital with a lot of slaves in Europe. This research also investigates how manumitted people, "coartados", and free blacks, instructed by their lawyers, create strategies of protection and resistance in the Court. In these performances of men of colour in the court, it is emphasized the risks and constrains to the freedom of manumitted people and free blacks, at the same time it appears the limits to the domain of masters and former-masters. Therefore, it is observed throughout this work that the intermediation of the court in conflicts about slavery and freedom reveal new dimensions in the private relationships among former-masters and manumitted people, as well as among masters and slaves / Doutorado / Historia Social / Doutora em História

The river conguest : colonial encounter in the N' dongo Kingdom of Central West AfricaE'Silva, Jorge Hayes 07 1900 (has links)
Portuguese global expansion was initiated by the capture of Cueta in 1415. Voyages of discovery along the West African coast ensued, resulting in the conquest and colonisation of the N’Dongo Kingdom. This dissertation comprises an archaeological survey of the Lusitanian Empire in the Republic of Angola. The Portuguese first established a settlement at Luanda in 1576, after which they set forth into the interior, following the Kwanza River upstream. The strategy for conquest was to take possession of the river with the objective to control the indigenous population, subjugate the N’gola, and, ultimately, to reach the silver mines at Cambambe. Various settlements developed along the margins of the river with associated forts and churches. Fortifications dominated the landscape while the churches expressed religious idealism. Social contact between the Mbundu people and the Portuguese at the colonial frontier is discussed. Post-colonial theory is used as the research methodology. No terceiro capítulo analisamos duas formas de transposição da escrita, o manuscrito e o impresso, consideramos suas particularidades e fizemos um balanço acerca da impressão tardia do Esmeraldo no século XIX / Abstract: Our focus in this dissertation is to understand how the traditions of thought from the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries in the book Esmeraldo de Situ Orbis, of Duarte Pacheco Pereira are broken, continued or converted. For this purpose, we use concepts such as scientific revolution, paradigm and normal science, as defined by Thomas Kuhn, to understand how the Esmeraldo's author might have subverted the manners of thinking which were then in course in the Portuguese mentality of the moment we have studied. We divided our work into three parts. At first, we discuss what science was in the period studied and we have also discussed the definition of paradigm according to the Thomas Kuhn's theory, as well as the Portuguese university's relationship with the navigations. In the second chapter we seek to understand whether the Esmeraldo de Situ Orbis expressed the symptom of a crisis of paradigms at the time of its writing and which posture was adopted by Pacheco in relation to classical authorities in order to conceive the physical world. In the third chapter we examine two forms of transposition of writing, the manuscript and the impress, we have considered its particularities and made a balance about the Esmeraldo's late impression in the Nineteenth Century / Mestrado / Historia Cultural / Mestre em História

The objective of this research is to expand the understanding of painting in colonial Brazil, specifically portrait painting. Being limited the focus to encompass the works which include members of the portuguese royal family and people closely related to it, as the vice-kings and governors. The determination of the object of study aims to select a privileged material to observe certain characteristics of eighteenth-century luso-brazilian culture, including the dimension of portrait painting into the realm of portuguese absolute monarchical power. The cultural function of these visual representations becomes clearer when they are subject to the conditions of demand and implementation of those, as well as the locations for which they were intended. We seek to reconstitute the circulation of works to be able to grasp the development of portraiture, which originates in the metropolis, crosses the Atlantic Ocean, and reaches the Portuguese America / Mestrado / Historia da Arte / Mestre em História
