Daffue, Jacobus Petrus 11 June 2014 (has links)
D.Ed. (Psychology of Education) / A democratic and prosperous society necessitates responsible behaviour from its members. The observation is often made that responsible behaviour is often absent or underdeveloped in society, especially amongst the schoolleaving youth. The development of responsible, well-trained schoolleavers is universally seen as the task of the school. This is because the development of responsibility is usually associated with the aims of the education process and the attainment of adulthood. It is at school that the opportunities may arise to teach, take and experience responsibility. Any of the activities at school may present opportunities which either contribute to the development of responsibility or inhibit it. Great emphasis is placed on the rights of children, yet too little is made of the opportunities which may assist in creating the perception amongst children that they are able to accept and act responsibly. The aspect of creating positive perception about a pupil's own ability is a very important aspect of education as a whole and should be developed to the fullest extent, in order teach and develop responsibility. Schools should take cognizance of this and endeavour to create a climate for pupils in which to accept responsibility. The invitational approach in education is based on the assumption of the perceptual tradition that all people have unrealized potential that may be developed within a climate of trust, intentionality, respect and optimism. In this approach all the participants in the educational process are regarded as responsible, capable and valuable. What teachers believe the pupils to be, they convey to them through their actions, words and the opportunities they present to them. These perceptions influence behaviour. It is therefore imperative that positive perceptions about pupils' ability to accept responsibility and to act independently are created and enhanced. The role of the school in the development of responsibility, the opportunities present for the development of pupils' acceptance of responsibility and the lack of responsible behaviour amongst school leavers, as indicated by employers, prompted the following questions: • does the school present pupils with opportunities to accept responsibility? • to what extent do pupils experience the opportunities to accept responsibility as such?

The Double Obstacle Problem on Metric Spaces

Farnana, Zohra January 2008 (has links)
During the last decade, potential theory and p-harmonic functions have been developed in the setting of doubling metric measure spaces supporting a p-Poincar´e inequality. This theory unifies, and has applications in several areas of analysis, such as weighted Sobolev spaces, calculus on Riemannian manifolds and Carnot groups, subelliptic differential operators and potential theory on graphs. In this thesis we investigate the double obstacle problem for p-harmonic functions on metric spaces. We show the existence and uniqueness of solutions and their continuity when the obstacles are continuous. Moreover the solution is p-harmonic in the open set where it does not touch the continuous obstacles. The boundary regularity of the solutions is also studied. Furthermore we study two kinds of convergence problems for the solutions. First we let the obstacles vary and fix the boundary values and show the convergence of the solutions. Second we consider an increasing sequence of open sets, with union Ω, and fix the obstacles and the boundary values. We show that the solutions of the obstacle problems in these sets converge to the solution of the corresponding problem in Ω. /
Incorrect series title in colophon.

Christoffel Function Asymptotics and Universality for Szegő Weights in the Complex Plane

Findley, Elliot M 31 March 2009 (has links)
In 1991, A. Máté precisely calculated the first-order asymptotic behavior of the sequence of Christoffel functions associated with Szego measures on the unit circle. Our principal goal is the abstraction of his result in two directions: We compute the translated asymptotics, limn λn(µ, x + a/n), and obtain, as a corollary, a universality limit for the fairly broad class of Szego weights. Finally, we prove Máté’s result for measures supported on smooth curves in the plane. Our proof of the latter derives, in part, from a precise estimate of certain weighted means of the Faber polynomials associated with the support of the measure. Finally, we investigate a variety of applications, including two novel applications to ill-posed problems in Hilbert space and the mean ergodic theorem.

Paulino, William Bossas. January 2012 (has links)
The privatization of the railroad in the middle of the years of 1990 increases the segment productivity by the concessionary investments in modernization and maintenance practices improvement. Inside the context of the maintenance, the use of probability models has a fundamental importance for determine system behavior, not being different with the maintenance of the railroads. Determine the times of repair in to the Power Law distribution means takes advantages of their main properties like a free scale. That in the build model can be generalized for the entire railroad. The data were adapted at the model and can be used as one more tool of aid for the resolution of problems and antecipation of unavailability of the railroad / Mestre

Generalizations of a Laplacian-Type Equation in the Heisenberg Group and a Class of Grushin-Type Spaces

Childers, Kristen Snyder 01 January 2011 (has links)
In [2], Beals, Gaveau and Greiner find the fundamental solution to a 2-Laplace-type equation in a class of sub-Riemannian spaces. This fundamental solution is based on the well-known fundamental solution to the p-Laplace equation in Grushin-type spaces [4] and the Heisenberg group [6]. In this thesis, we look to generalize the work in [2] for a p-Laplace-type equation. After discovering that the "natural" generalization fails, we find two generalizations whose solutions are based on the fundamental solution to the p-Laplace equation.

O problema de Dirichlet em domínios limitados / The Dirichlet problem on bounded domains

Mota, Adalgisa Mendonça 15 April 2011 (has links)
In this work we use two approach to prove the existence of solutions for the Classical Dirichlet Problem on bounded domains. The first method is applied to domains with smooth boundary and is based on the Single and Double Layer Potentials Theory. The second method uses the Variational Dirichlet Principle to solve the Dirichlet Problem in plane domains with boundary less regular than the previous case; more precisely, boundary satisfying the property of the outer triangle.
