The Effects of Teaching Prefix Meaning and a Strategy to Derive Word Meaning on a Prefix Vocabulary Test and Sentence Comprehension Test for Middle School Students with Learning Disabilities

Harris, Shannon K. 01 December 2010 (has links)
Previous researchers have concluded that there is a need for determining how vocabulary instruction effects vocabulary comprehension and reading comprehension for young learners. Researchers have implemented morphemic strategies in various studies to identify effective methods for vocabulary instruction. In the present study, four prefixes were taught to students with disabilities to extend vocabulary research by using a morphological approach with a focus on prefix instruction. In addition students were taught how to combine the meaning of a prefix to the meaning of a root word. Data patterns indicate an increase in students' ability to provide definitions for prefixed words while the transfer to reading comprehension was minimal. The results of this study provide direction for future research in implementing a morphemic approach for vocabulary instruction.

GPU-Specfic Kalman Filtering and Retrodiction for Large-Scale Target Tracking

Tager, Sean 10 1900 (has links)

In the field of Tracking and Data Fusion most, if not all, computations executed by a computer are carried out serially. The sole part of the process that is not entirely serial is the collection of data from multiple sensors, which can be executed in parallel. However, once the data is to be filtered the most likely candidate is a serial algorithm. This is due in large part to the algorithms themselves that have been developed over the last several decades for use on conventional computers that have been left void of parallel computing capabilities, until now. With the arrival of graphical processing units, or GPUs, the tracking community is in a favourable position to exploit the functionality of parallel processing in order to track a growing number of targets. The problem, however, begins with the sheer labour of having to convert all the pre-existing serial tracking algorithms into parallel ones. This is clearly a daunting task when one considers the extent to which the tracking community has gone to develop modern day filters such as Alpha Beta filters, Probabilistic Data Association filters, Interacting Multiple Model filters, and several dozen, if not hundred, variants of the aforementioned. It is most likely that these filters will find some kind of a parallelization in the near future as ever more sensors are dispersed throughout society and even more targets are monitored with these sensors. The volume of targets then becomes simply too unmanageable for a serial algorithm and more focus is placed iv on parallel ones. Yet, before the parallel algorithms can be utilized they have to be derived. It is the derivation of these parallel algorithms which is the focus of this thesis. However, it should be made clear that it would be impossible to formulate a parallelization for every filter found in the literature, and so the goal here is to direct the attention onto one filter in particular, the Kalman filter.
/ Master of Applied Science (MASc)

Investigating the Effectiveness of Stealthy Hijacks against Public Route Collectors : Is AS-Path Prepending Enough to Hide from Public Route Collectors? / Undersökning av effektiviteten hos smygande kapningar mot offentliga ruttinsamlare : Är AS-Path Prepending tillräckligt för att dölja från offentliga ruttinsamlare?

Wang, Kunyu January 2023 (has links)
BGP hijacking is a threat to network organizations because traditional BGP protocols were not designed with security in mind. Currently, research to combat hijacking is being done by detecting hijacking in real time from Public Route Collectors. However, by using AS-Path Prepending, a well-known traffic engineering technique, hijackers could adjust the influence scope of hijacks to potentially avoid Public Route Collectors. This thesis investigates fist, whether AS-Path Prepending is sufficient to hide from Public Route Collector, and second whether the hijacker can predict its hijack’s stealthiness by simply comparing the AS path length with the victim. Last, we investigate the non-hijacker-controlled parameters, which are the geographical locations and victim prepending times if the victim also enable AS-Path Prepending for traffic engineering in our study. Our results show that on one hand, AS-Path Prepending benefits stealthy hijacks to route collectors. While on the other hand, it is not sufficient to completely hide from route collectors only using it. By simply comparing the AS paths length, the hijacker’s prediction is constructive but not practical. And non-hijacker-controlled parameters indeed can significantly affect the stealthiness of hijacking.

A descriptive analysis of the morphology of the Tshiguvhu dialect of Venda

Mulaudzi, Phalandwa Abraham, 1957- 01 1900 (has links)
In this study an attempt is made to describe the morphological apects of Tshiguvhu. In chapter 1, it is indicated that historically, there was extensive early contact between Vhaguvhu and Balobedu and Tlokwa. In ,chapters 2 and 3, nouns and pronouns are analysed morphologically. Some similarities and differences between Tshiguvhu and Tshivenda are highlighted. These differences are ascribed to influences from Lobedu and Tlokwa. In chapters 4 and 5, the form of the verb and the use of verb forms in various tenses, where applicable, are described morphologically. Some verb roots and extensions have been influenced by Northern Sotho dialects whereas some have not. In chapter 6, the morphology of adverbs, interrogatives, conjunctions, ideophones and interjections are briefly described. In conclusion, it is indicated that Tshiguvhu is a dialect of Venda because of its cultural and historical bonds with Venda, although linguistically it shares some features with certain Northern Sotho dialects. / African Languages / M.A. (African Languages)

Déviation des moyennes ergodiques / Deviation of ergodic averages

González Villanueva, José Luis 04 July 2014 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the deviation of ergodic sums for a substitution dynamical systems with a matrix that admits eigenvalues of modulus larger than 1. Specifically, we concentrate on substitutions with non-conjugated eigenvalues. At first, we define the a-minimals letters and the dominant letters of a word to study its broken associated line. We define the normalize broken line and its limit function. For the study of ergodic sums, we define the sub-automaton of minimum letters. We give conditions on a substitution so that there is infinitely many zero sums ergodic for a point x 2 X. Finally, using a loop in a class of Rauzy, we prove the existence of infinitely many interval exchange transformation self-similar, whose Rauzy matrix has two non-conjugated eigenvalues larger than 1 and every affine interval exchange transformation that is semi-conjugated, is also conjugated.

Verbos com o prefixo ver- na língua alemã: uma análise construcionista / Verbs with the prefix ver- in German language: a constructionist analysis

Araújo Filho, Marcos Antônio Alves 30 July 2013 (has links)
The prefix ver- has already been a theme of many linguistics (LEOPOLD, 1907; SCHIRMEIER, 2006, and others), that are dedicated to German language. The polissemic aspect from this prefix is the main reason for such a big interest. Unlike those authors, with this paper I analyse new verbal formations with the prefix ver- in order to discover semantic as well as morphological regularities in the process of verbal formations. Therefore, I researched new not yet lexicalized verbs in a website (http://www.deflok.de/HipHopLyrics/Texte/), composed of hip hop lyrics in German. The web address was treated as the corpus. Twelve new verbs were detected: verbassen, verspeien, verpeilen, verchecken, verächten, verkreuzen, verstumpfen, vergaukeln, verschlendern, vernabeln, verreimen, verstottern. In order to verify that these verbs were not yet lexicalized we used the following dictionaries: DUDEN (www.duden.de) and the digital version of Langenscheidt, and PONS. The dictionary DUDEN also served to specify the different meaning, that the prefix ver- gives to the derivates, in which it is part of. The theoretical support is based on the terms and definitions of the construction grammar (Goldberg, 1995), that allowed to get a new point of view about the mechanisms involved in the verb formation with the prefix ver-. Complementary I employed the definitions proposed by FAUCONNIER & TURNER (2003) to explain the meaning of certain neologism to which the construction grammar theory could not be applied.
