PRESERVAÇÃO DIGITAL: UM SUBSÍDIO PARA O CENTRO DE ARTES E LETRAS DA UFSM / DIGITAL PRESERVATION: A SUBSIDY FOR THE CENTER FOR ARTS AND LETTERS UFSM

Frigo, Denise 06 July 2012 (has links)
This work aims to verify the application of digital preservation strategies in the documents produced and/or received in the Department of Education s Center for Arts and Letters from the Federal University of Santa Maria. Thus, the study was based on the query works, articles and related material on the subject of study. We also applied the technique of observation with the aid of a script, which was applied in all departments of the Center for Teaching Arts and Letters and the translation of data and information resulting from studies produced data sheets and graphs. From the analysis of surveys, reports and this observation, we have reached conclusions. One is that digital preservation is a constant risk control, in which the recognition that losses are inevitable develops the relevance of the ways to avoid them. Moreover, there is a consensus on the best strategies and methodologies to be employed in a digital preservation plan, since no measure is capable of meeting all requirements of all digital documents. However, the more the management of electronic documents is as standards, the more likely the sustainability of digital heritage. Although the knowledge and experience that exist today are not able to guarantee the durability of needed. These findings have allowed, at the end of the work, a handbook with recommendations for preservation of digital documents. It is expected therefore that the results obtained in the study can be considered as a reference for both the UFSM, and for other institutions who are interested in this work.

Functional ex vivo and histological evaluation of donated lungs refused for lung transplantation

Alessandro Wasum Mariani 10 August 2012 (has links)
O modelo de reperfusão pulmonar ex vivo permitiu importante melhora na função pulmonar, e o modelo experimental com bloco pulmonar dividido demonstrou ser um método adequado para estudos experimentais comparativos com pulmões humanos / Background: Besides the important advances in lung preservation reached in last decades this subject continues far from ideal and still represent a major challenge for the lung transplant groups. The Swedish group lead by Prof. Stig Steen has described a new method of preservation so called topical- ECMO along with the ex vivo perfusion system. However this new method has never been tested against the most popular formula of preservation: cold ischemia after single flush perfusion. This study compares these two forms of lung preservation on an ex vivo evaluation model. As secondarys end-points we also study the ex vivo lung perfusion capacity for recover damaged lungs to transplant and the usefulness of the lung bloc split model for experimental study of human lungs. Methods: Fourteen lungs were retrieved from seven brain-dead organ donors refused for transplantation. After initial preservation with single flush of LPD glucose, the lung bloc was divided and each side was preserved by topical-ECMO or cold ischemia for 8 hours. After this the bloc was reconnected than assessed on ex vivo lung system for functional and histological parameters; lung biopsies were collect in three different times on each side. The functional variables assessed were: oxygenation capacity (OC), pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) and pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR). The histological variables were: lung injury score (LIS), apoptotic cells counting and transmission electron microscopy study. Results: Seven cases were included. Mean age 53.86 years (±16.7); male 4 (57.1%); cause of death: hemorrhagic stroke for 5 donors and head trauma for 2. Side of topical- ECMO: Right 4 e Left 3. The mean OC was 468.00 mmHg (±81.69) on topical-ECMO group and 455.86 (±54.05) on Cold Ischemia group (p=0. 758); median PAP median was 140 mmHg(120 160) for topical-ECMO and 140mmHg (140 150) for Cold Ischemia (p=0,285); median PVR 459 dina.s.cm-5 (432,43 492,30) on topical-ECMO group and 474,5 dina.s.cm-5 (459,01 545,45) on Cold Ischemia group (p=0,285). The median for LIS was: topical-ECMO group on T1 6,285 (±4,029), on T2 8,714 (±7,714) and on T3 9,571 (±7,857); Cold Ischemia group on T1 7,571 (±4,429) on T2 7,714 (±4,785) and on T3 7,857 (±6,121) p=0,531. For apoptotic cell counting: topical-ECMO group on T1 16,71(±2,545), on T2 20,71 (±5,843) and on T3 25,00 (±9,34); for Cold Ischemia group it was on T1 18,57 (±5,118), on T2 17,57 (±3,014) and on T3 24,86 (±10,374) p=0,803. The transmission electron microscopy study shows no difference between groups. Conclusions: In our study the topical-ECMO failed to show improvement of lung preservation compared with the cold ischemia in all studied parameters. However the ex vivo lung perfusion model was responsible for a important increase on lung function, and the lung bloc split model appears as a reliable method for experimental human lung studies

Spatial Patterns in Development Regulation: Tree Preservation Ordinances of the DFW Metropolitan Area

Cox, Carissa 08 1900 (has links)
Land use regulations are typically established as a response to development activity. For effective growth management and habitat preservation, the opposite should occur. This study considers tree preservation ordinances of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area as a means of evaluating development regulation in a metropolitan context. It documents the impact urban cores have on regulations and policies throughout their region, demonstrating that the same urban-rural gradient used to describe physical components of our metropolitan areas also holds true in terms of policy formation. Although sophistication of land use regulation generally dissipates as one moves away from an urban core, native habitat is more pristine at the outer edges. To more effectively protect native habitat, regional preservation measures are recommended.

The rationality of retirement preservation decisions : towards a scientific model

Reyers, Michelle January 2013 (has links)
There is worldwide concern that individuals are not saving sufficiently for retirement. Low savings rates, coupled with a lack of preservation of retirement funds when individuals move jobs, could have adverse repercussions on the ability to retire with sufficient funds. The traditional response to low preservation levels has been to impose taxes on cash withdrawals and a move is underway in South Africa to potentially mandate preservation. All these interventions assume that individuals are not acting rationally when they take a cash payout, however this assumption of irrationality has not been tested. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the factors that lead to low preservation levels in order to determine whether intervention is required to increase preservation, and if so, what form it should take. The study consisted of two phases. Phase one carried out a critical, multidisciplinary literature review to construct a conceptual model of the factors which potentially lead to low preservation levels. According to this model, these factors could arise from rational decision making in line with consumption smoothing behaviour linked to the life cycle hypothesis or irrational decision making arising from behavioural factors linked to bounded willpower or bounded rationality. The resultant model highlighted the distinct differences in the drivers of rational and irrational behaviour and therefore, the distinctly different interventions required. Phase two of the study focused on the empirical testing of the conceptual model to obtain an understanding of the relative importance of the factors. This phase made use of an analytical survey to test relationships between the predictor variables identified in the conceptual model, and the outcome variable which is whether the individual preserved funds when moving jobs. The data was analysed with logistic regression techniques. The study found that behavioural factors play an important role in explaining the preservation decisions made by individuals. In particular behavioural factors related to bounded rationality as a result of the inherent computational complexity of the decision making environment emerged as important explanatory variables. This appears to indicate that solutions should focus on decision support and guidance to assist individuals in making optimal decisions. This study makes a unique contribution to the field of retirement finance and decision making as it highlights the role that behavioural factors play in retirement preservation decisions. The implications regarding which interventions are best suited to assist in optimal decision iv making are informative for policy makers, providers of retirement products and financial advisors, as well as sponsors and members of retirement funds. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / lk2014 / Financial Management / Unrestricted

Pendulum Performing Arts Center: Adaptive Reuse Design of the Historic Court Square Building in Springfield, Massachusetts

Schnarr, Lindsay M 01 January 2011 (has links) (PDF)
Drawing from the ongoing revitalization efforts in the Western Massachusetts post-industrial city of Springfield, Massachusetts, this adaptive reuse project aims to bring the public back to the city center by providing a common space for cultural connections. Sensitivity to preservation of the historic fabric of the existing Court Square Building is blended with the transformative potential of introducing architectural expressions of dance theory to create a school and theater for the performing arts. The study of balance between opposing, yet complimentary forces, as they exist in architecture and dance, creates a conceptual interplay that guides the design of this project. Viewing the existing historic building as a dance partner to the proposed contemporary addition, leads an exploration in the tectonic translation of form, rhythm, weight, movement and breath, as elements of dance theory that are developed to represent the building envelope, structure, materials, circulation and openings. Ultimately, the adapted building creates a dialogue for the past and present city of Springfield, simultaneously honoring its unique cultural heritage and future potential in serving as an icon for successful urban transformation.

Education for Pediatric Oncology Nurses on Fertility Preservation of Pediatric Oncology Patients

Breit, Elyse 01 May 2014 (has links)
Although the survival rate of childhood cancer is high, nearly two thirds of these survivors experience negative long-term secondary side effects from cancer treatments. Infertility is one such side effect that can have a prominent impact on quality of life as the patient ages. It is important for nurses working with pediatric oncology patients to provide the patient and family with education about risk for infertility and fertility preservation (FP) in order to allow families to make decisions about FP before cancer treatment starts. However, pediatric oncology nurses report being uneducated about FP guidelines and are hesitant to broach this subject with families. The purpose of this HIM thesis is to review nurse perceived barriers related to educating patients and their families about the risk for infertility following cancer treatments and FP and to make recommendations for improving communication between nurses and families about FP. A search was performed using CINAHL, PreCINAHL, PsychINFO, PsychARTICLES, and Medline databases and examined peer-reviewed quantitative and qualitative research studies. Key terms used in the database searches were ped' OR child', onco' OR cancer', fert', and nurs'. Findings indicated that there were many barriers for pediatric oncology nurses, which inhibited the discussion of FP with patients and families such as lack of knowledge and resources, provider attitudes toward FP, and patient factors. Based on the findings, the researcher identified several interventions to aid pediatric oncology nurses in overcoming these barriers to FP discussion.

The Evolution of Chinese Supermarkets in North America: An Alternative Approach to Chinese Supermarket Design

Lin, Ruoxin 09 August 2023 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis begins by investigating the evolution of traditional Chinese markets to Chinese supermarkets in North America. By charting the trends of these structures in shop floor layouts and site approaches, a hybridized architecture is uncovered. Then, through the design of a contemporary Chinese supermarket in Philadelphia, PA, the thesis demonstrates how values of identity and cultural awareness can be brought into dialogue with architectural trends.
