The impact of the summer seminar program on midshipman performance: does summer seminar participation influence success at the Naval Academy?

Norton, Michael A. 06 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited / It is unknown if the Summer Seminar program, which gives rising high school seniors a six-day look at Naval Academy life, has resulted in a more successful midshipman. While not previously discussed in literature, there are an abundance of studies on civilian recruiting and orientation programs, as well as realistic job previews and expectation-lowering procedures. Based on this literature, it is theorized that Summer Seminar program participation will be positively correlated to increased graduation rates and increased academic cumulative quality point ratings, as well as increased military and physical performance. This hypothesis was tested using multiple hierarchical regressions on population data obtained from the Classes of 1997 through 2003. Success is defined using seven dependent variables organized by academic, military, and physical performance. The key independent variable is participation in the Summer Seminar program, while eleven other independent variables control for demographics, selection criteria, and proven indicators of success. Participation in the Summer Seminar program had a significant relation to increased graduation rates, increased academic cumulative quality point ratings, increased military cumulative quality point ratings, and increased physical readiness test scores. This study concludes that the Summer Seminar program makes a unique contribution to midshipman success at the Naval Academy. / Lieutenant, United States Navy

Financial Risk and Indigenous Consent / El Riesgo Financiero y el Consentimiento Indígena

Imai, Shin, Kang, Sally 10 April 2018 (has links)
In this article, the authors describe how the International Financial Corporation of the World Bank, and the 77 global financial institutions that have signed on to the Equator Principles, have come to the conclusion that social conflict with indigenous communities needs to be resolved through the application of free, prior, informed and consent. While the requirement to obtain consent of an indigenous people would appear to make it more difficult for extractive industry projects to proceed, theories of dispute resolution developed by the Harvard Negotiation Project suggest that where consent is obtained, it is more likely thatc onflicts will be reduced.

Legal Problems in the Implementation of Prior Consultation in Peru: or the "Legal Excuses" of the Government to Violate it / Problemas Jurídicos en la Implementación de la Consulta Previa en el Perú: o los «Pretextos Jurídicos» del Gobierno para Incumplirla

Ruiz Molleda, Juan Carlos 10 April 2018 (has links)
The objective of this article is to review and analyze the different arguments and legal excuses made by the Government and the private sector in Peru, this for the purpose of that the first-mentioned institution fails or avoids its juridical obligation of execute the preview consultation process for the indigenous peoples in Peru, this whenever the State is going to adopt a legislative or administrative measure susceptible that will affect directly to the indigenous peoples. In summary, this article seeks to analyze about the juridical problems founded at the moment of the implementation of the preview consultation process in our Legal System. If we consider that Convention 169 ILO, and the right to consult has been in force since February 2nd of 1995, and the Constitutional Court established on binding jurisprudence that the Convention in question is a norm that no needs a legislative development for its effectiveness, thus we can conclude that, rather than arguments is about legal excuses.

Road Surface Preview Estimation Using a Monocular Camera

Ekström, Marcus January 2018 (has links)
Recently, sensors such as radars and cameras have been widely used in automotives, especially in Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS), to collect information about the vehicle's surroundings. Stereo cameras are very popular as they could be used passively to construct a 3D representation of the scene in front of the car. This allowed the development of several ADAS algorithms that need 3D information to perform their tasks. One interesting application is Road Surface Preview (RSP) where the task is to estimate the road height along the future path of the vehicle. An active suspension control unit can then use this information to regulate the suspension, improving driving comfort, extending the durabilitiy of the vehicle and warning the driver about potential risks on the road surface. Stereo cameras have been successfully used in RSP and have demonstrated very good performance. However, the main disadvantages of stereo cameras are their high production cost and high power consumption. This limits installing several ADAS features in economy-class vehicles. A less expensive alternative are monocular cameras which have a significantly lower cost and power consumption. Therefore, this thesis investigates the possibility of solving the Road Surface Preview task using a monocular camera. We try two different approaches: structure-from-motion and Convolutional Neural Networks. The proposed methods are evaluated against the stereo-based system. Experiments show that both structure-from-motion and CNNs have a good potential for solving the problem, but they are not yet reliable enough to be a complete solution to the RSP task and be used in an active suspension control unit.

On Optimal Lateral Tracking Control for Multi-Steered Autonomous Vehicles / Optimal Lateral Spårningskontroll för Flerhjulsstyrda Autonoma Fordon

Strömberg, Axel January 2021 (has links)
The transport industry is experiencing a disruption as fully autonomous vehicles are introduced in traffic. The intelligent, driverless vehicles will reduce cost, liberate human effort and increase safety. Today, the hardware technology seems to have reached the required processing power, but the decision-making algorithm still has a long way to go until they’re proven to be road-safe. Among these is the problem of lateral path tracking control. This thesis will consider the lateral control problem with the goal to send the right signal to the steering actuators so that the vehicle follows a predetermined trajectory. The vehicle in question is a triaxial, rigid, electric truck with active steering on both front and rearmost wheels. With servo latency and large inertial parameters in mind, a highly accurate model of the lateral and yaw behavior must be identified in order to predict the vehicle dynamics for a given steering input. Then, the properties of an optimal lateral controller are iteratively improved until a sufficiently low tracking error is obtained. Lastly, the controller is tuned to guarantee robustness for a range of uncertain vehicle parameters. The derived triaxial model with servo actuation is proven to be better at predicting the vehicle dynamics compared to other models common in literature with only one active steering input. When constructing a lateral controller, the importance was shown of considering 1) state feedback control of the lateral error, 2) feedforward control operating on future road curvature, 3) integrating control which combats biases and model errors, 4) using a tailored triaxial model and 5) minimizing the control signal change. Lastly, the derived controller was shown to have a decent stability margin with respect to estimated uncertainties.

The effects of proportion and importance of negative information of webpage recruitment advertisements on organizational attractiveness

Unknown Date (has links)
The purpose of this study is to empirically examine the effects of proportion and importance of negative information (having the function of realistic job preview with respect to web recruitment advertisements) on organizational attractiveness. The mediation effects of job expectation and trust toward organization on the previous relationships and the moderation effects of perceived job competitiveness on the previous relationships were examined. The independent variables of this study are proportion of the negative information (10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, or 50%) and importance of the negative information (low vs. high). The dependent variable is organizational attractiveness. Totally 466 seniors and graduate students who were hunting for a job joined in the experiment through the fictitious organization recruiting webpage. The result reveals that proportion of negative information has non-linear effect on organizational attractiveness. Recruitment ads with 20% of negative information had the strongest effect on organizational attractiveness. Negative information of higher importance induced more organizational attractiveness than that of lower importance. ANCOVA was used to examine the mediation effects. It shows that the job expectation mediates the relationship between proportion of negative information and organizational attractiveness. However, the mediation effect of trust toward organization on the relationship between proportion of negative information and organizational attractiveness hasn’t been confirmed. Via the mediation effect of job content expectation and trust toward organization, importance of negative information can affect organizational attractiveness.

The Pre-listening Stage in L2 Listening Instruction to A2 - B1 Adult Learners.

Ždímalová, Hana January 2014 (has links)
The Pre-listening Stage in L2 Listening Instruction to A2 - B1 Adult Learners By Hana Ždímalová This dissertation deals with listening instruction to adult EFL learners in the Czech Republic and the phenomenon of pre-listening, which is currently under-researched. It examines adult EFL students' perspectives and perceptions of listening instruction and of the inclusion of different pre-listening techniques, particularly at CEFR A2-B1 proficiency levels. The theoretical part of the study focuses on current developments in listening research and the historical context of the development of listening instruction in classical FLT methodology. The pre-listening stage has been integral to L2 listening instruction since the beginning of Communicative Language Teaching. However, some controversial issues have recently been raised. For example, teachers are sometimes suspected of spending too much time on the pre- listening stage (Field 2002; 2008) and the overall usefulness of previewed comprehension questions in testing listening has been challenged (Sherman 1997). Moreover, adult students' listening needs and their perceptions of listening instruction have not yet been thoroughly researched (Graham 2006; Graham and Macaro 2008). This study argues that we should ask the students about their perceptions...
