Le curé au prétoire : justice écclésiastique et développement de l'idéal sacerdotal tridentin dans le diocèse de Beauvais au XVIIe siècle

Saule, Kevin 07 December 2013 (has links)
This dissertation examines a little known part of the Catholic reformation. Thanks to the study of not less than 200 cases against deviant priests investigated by ecclesiastical courts in the diocese of Beauvais in the XVIIth century, our research tries to understand the part played by ecclesiastical courts (i.e. « officialités ») in the process of controlling parish priests. This dissertation is divided into three parts – « The Centuries of Disorders », « The Delinquent Priest in his Parish » and « The Delinquent Priest in Court » - and shows that, far from being marginalised, the Beauvais ecclesiastical court succeeds in keeping its prerogatives over priests without seeing its sphere of competence challenged by secular courts. Most of the time, the bishop’s judicial decisions work according to the same principles as the King’s, trying to reconcile and reform rather than to punish. The sentence of the judicial vicar (the « officialis ») is always severe and eventually only handed down when the priest showed he was unable to mend his ways in spite of numerous warnings. The deliquent priests who are at odds with the bishop’s justice have a distinctive profile. They come from the least underprivileged backgrounds, they were trained « on the job », they often come from a foreign diocese and all, or almost all, belong to generations living before the setting up of diocesan seminaries. Thanks to multitudinous and varied support from their parish, the morally depraved priests manage to remain in the place for many years before scandals cause them fall into disfavour. The religious life in the area is not greatly disturbed by the misbehaviour of the priest as the parish records and files as well as the mill resources show. Unlike the alarming speech of some plaintiffs, the flock doesn’t turn away from the Church after the scandals nor questions the validity of the sacraments administered by the priest.

The priest in The Temple: the relationship between George Herbert’s English poetry and The Country parson

Allen, Matthew 11 1900 (has links)
This dissertation describes the relationship between George Herbert's two principal works, The Temple (1633) and The Country Parson (1651). The introduction discusses the main problems faced by readers of The Temple: its paradoxical religious statements, its apparent lack of unity, its variable poetic voice, and its place in literary history. Chapter 1 argues that The Temple and The Country Parson are complementary: that they may have been written together and considered companionpieces, that they are similar in form and content, and that they should be read together. Chapter 2 places The Country Parson in the genre of the clerical manual, and explains its distinctive form as the influence of various kinds of renaissance prose, including the essay, the professional handbook, the courtesy book, the prose character, and the moral resolve. Chapter 3 provides the first thorough analysis of the prose style of The Country Parson, a style which may be loosely characterized as a combination of Ciceronian and Senecan attributes, but is better thought of as "Anglican" or "poetic." Chapters 4 and 5 apply The Country Parson to the problems faced by readers of The Temple, and describe the Anglican spirituality, pastoral voice, and coherence of The Temple, along with its proper place in literary history.

Jindřich Skopec - kněz a historik / Jindřich Skopec - the priest and historian

PRAŽÁKOVÁ, Lenka January 2014 (has links)
This submitted diploma thesis deals with the life of Jindřich Skopec (1873-1942), who worked as a priest, an archivist, a teacher of theology at a secondary school and a historian. His interests were multilateral, but he indelibly imprinted his name in the past thanks to his unflagging diligence and his honest work. He built his eternal memorial with his careful word processing of the work called "The memories of František Jan Vavák, neighbour and mayor in Milčice". These "Memories" were published in five books and the publisher was "Dědictví svatojánské". Thus, he became an honorary membership of history research group. Publishing of these "Memories" was Skopec´s life work and unforgettable legacy for the future generation. He also deeply stuck in mind of his contemporaries, because he dedicated his life to education of youth. He taught them to religious belief, moral and deeply humility. The diploma thesis is ever the first that tries to contain the life of this outstanding priest and historian from his early childhood over his clerical activity to his research activity.

Transformace oběti v Písmu. Teologie oběti. / Transformation of Sacrifice in the Scripture. Theology of Sacrifice.

DVOŘÁK, Josef January 2016 (has links)
Diachronic comparison of three political and religious systems of three independent geographical areas (ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Syria Palestine) with the faith of ancient Israel shows certain aspects important for the kerygmatic theological message of Tanach as well as the New Testament. Significance of the king, priest, prophet, and religious ceremonies in the temple is derived from their specific understanding of the divine. However, their religious systems completely lack (with the exception of Israel) eschatology. The message about the transcendent/immanent God Lord (Jesus' Father) is impossible to reconstruct from the available sources through diachronic methodology. Furthermore it cannot be understood as a mere result of religious synchronic redefinition of the Scriptures. The New Testament transforms the Old Testament religious system to narrative kerygma about the sacrifice of both Father and Son. It speaks about the Risen Lord, who is able to reconcile God with his adherent. Such a message is unheard of (unexpected) in the Second Temple Judaism. Even the Church Fathers do not interpret Christ's conscious ebed-like sacrifice along the lines of the ritual forgiveness of the OT. Based on the scholarly analyses from the proponents of the so called Prague school, as well as those coming from theologians stressing the paradigm of biblical interpretation through the event of resurrection, this dissertation concluded in the subject matter of soteriological transformation of the sacrifice the following: Agnus Dei, with his crucifixion being a ritual slaughter, founds the new community through his own Pasch, which has also the futuristic (eschatological) aspect both in the NT and in the faith of the early Church. The meaning of this sacrifice will be actualized in 'drinking of the chalice' by the Lord Jesus with the resurrected Church in the coming new Creation. Thus, the Eucharist becomes a unique 'cultic' homage (Temple ceremony) through existential acceptance of the risen Lord. The same concept can be found at the heart of the Patristic thinking (inclusive paradigm of Christ's sacrifice, that is Christian obedience even unto death) . The Fathers understood the sacrifice as means of overcoming alienation from God by metamorphosis of one's life based on Christ's sacrifice not to God, but to people. Such a sacrifice is life-giving activity of the Lord God himself and is able to renew the life of God's people and make them heirs to the eternal life.

Specifika ošetřování reprezentantů církve - církevních hodnostářů / Specialities of nursing with representatives of Church - dignitary

ŠEVČÍKOVÁ, Kateřina January 2007 (has links)
The main theme of our thesis was the Specificity of church representants´ treatment {--} church dignitaries. We set 3 targets: 1. to allocate the specificities when treating church dignitaries of various religious directions, 2. to describe daily schedule of various religious directions, 3. to find out, how much are the church representants of various religious directions satisfied with provided health care. We devided the thesis into two parts, theoretical and practical. In the theoretical part, nurses, but even general public, can get the basic information about five religions, whose representants we can meet in our hospitals: Roman catholic, protestant, orthodoxy, judaism, islam. Within our thesis we also deal with the treatment of nuns´ treatment. Chaptres are clearly ranged, in the inroduction we always mention short world history of the particular religion, then history in Bohemia, followed by brief history and important dogmas of the particular belief. At the end of each chapter we mention daily schedule of a church dignitary and specificity of his treatment. In the practical part, we discuss the results of our research. To obtain necessary information, we used two methods. By questionnaire method, we found out the nurses´ level of knowledge about mentioned religions and their opinion concerning the necessity of a specific attitude when treating church dignitaries. The level of their knowledge was satisfactory. Hypothesis, in which we supposed that the health personnel, taking care of church representants of various religious directions, do not make any difference between them and other patients, was not after statistic elaboration confirmed. To obtain information from church dignitaries we used a method of a standard interview. After evaluation of obtained information there were following hypothesis: church representants of various religious directions are satisfied with offered health care. Upon the results of this research we recommended to insert this theme, specificity of church representants´ treatment, to curriculum of health schools (for health assistants, nurses Bachelor and nurses Master). Then also impose this theme to programs of specific conferences, retraining courses or educational seminary, in order to inform even graduated nurses about this new disscused theme. It would be also convenient, if educational institutions used more often various offers from jewish or islamic fondations, which willingly offer conferences and closer approach to the particular religion. Nurses should be motivated to get new information about various religions in order to be generally more cultivated, which is indispensable for a nurse.

The Unsuccessful Harvesting of Figs from Thistles and Other Failures of Idealized Masculinity in Ella D'Arcy's The Bishop's Dilemma

Christianson, Elizabeth Watson 06 July 2011 (has links) (PDF)
Although confusion about the genre of New Woman Ella D'Arcy's only novella has resulted in a lack of scholarship, The Bishop's Dilemma can now be read as a social commentary that reaches beyond the New Woman subversion of the Victorian marriage plot, broadening the gender discussion at the fin-de-siècle. In this essay, I examine how D'Arcy uses Catholicism as a vehicle to create a unique space in the Catholic ritual of the confession that gives her reader privileged access to Victorian manhood. I argue that by placing her examination of masculinity in the context of the Catholic priesthood, D'Arcy renders her protagonist, Herbert Fayler, unable to use the convention of marriage as a means of subjugation or salvation of Dilemma's female characters, removing the marriage plot as a framework for the tension in the text and leaving Fayler's masculinity vulnerable to his own self-censure. I conclude that D'Arcy does not condemn Fayler any more than she blames the New Woman characters of her earlier short stories for their plight, but rather, D'Arcy constructs a figure of masculinity that exposes dangers present when men are groomed in a romanticized world with idealized notions of masculine life.

Leading from the Margins: The Educational Leadership Experiences of Jesuit Directors of Mission High Schools in the Philippines and the Implications for the Leadership Formation of Filipino Jesuits

Andal, Guillrey Anthony M., S.J. 01 January 2020 (has links) (PDF)
Educational leadership preparation is not an explicit priority in the scholastic formation of future Catholic priests in the Philippines. Consequently, there may be those assigned to lead in parochial mission schools early on in their ordained ministry but lack leadership training and experience. Thus, this study sought to answer the following research questions: What are the experiences of educational leadership successes and challenges of newly ordained Jesuit priests assigned as directors of Jesuit mission high schools in the Philippines? What are the perceptions of newly ordained Jesuit priests assigned as directors of Jesuit mission high schools in the Philippines on how their seminary formation contributed to their preparation as school leaders? This phenomenological research explored the experiences of seven first-time Jesuit school directors of mission high schools in the Southern Philippines and examined their perceptions about the leadership formation that they received as seminarians before being missioned to the ministry of leading high-needs schools in the peripheries of rural Philippines. Through a modified educational leadership preparation framework presented originally by Capper, Theoharis, and Sebastian (2006), I analyzed the qualitative data from the field and determined how the participants’ peculiar leadership experiences and keen assessment of their seminary formation can inform enhancements in the Jesuit leadership formation’s context-specific curriculum, andragogy, and holistic evaluation to prepare future Jesuit educational leaders’ critical consciousness and socially just leadership knowledge and skills. In line with this, I recommended the institutionalization of programmatic leadership training modules for Jesuits before they are missioned as first-time school directors.
