Private lives : the presentation of marriage in English drama 1930-1990

Burns, Glenn, English, Australian Defence Force Academy, UNSW January 1999 (has links)
Despite the broadening of the subject matter of English drama in its ???new wave??? period from the late nineteen fifties, it is striking to see how much of enduring mainstream English drama has a domestic focus. The purpose of this thesis is to provide the first full-length study of marriage on the English stage from 1930-1990. The thesis examines the way in which a number of important playwrights have fashioned drama from the conflict between the public, or institutional, functions of marriage and the private, or relational, functions of marriage. The thesis places this conflict into historical context. This will show that the conflict between the private and public aspects of marriage is not one of clearly opposed opposites but one that is made dynamic by significant social and legal changes to the status, function and conventions of marriage. The thesis also demonstrates that this conflict is further complicated by class considerations and by the particular circumstances of each marital partnership. From the wealth of material available, I have chosen to examine in detail the work of seven playwrights who have made significant contributions to domestic drama or domestic comedy. Playwrights have been selected because their plays gained a strong audience on first performance and because, through numerous revivals and through publication of scripts, they have earned an enduring place in English drama. John Osborne???s Look Back in Anger, which in 1956, ushered in the ???new wave???, is pivotal play for discussion. The previous generation is represented by Noel Coward, J. B. Priestley and Terence Rattigan. The ???new wave??? and its aftermath are represented by Harold Pinter, Tom Stoppard and, finally Alan Ayckbourn. Despite a wide variety of approaches to the topic of marriage, these writers tend to assume a middle class audience and to follow or adapt the traditions of realism or comedy of manners. This thesis argues that despite real, even radical, changes to marriage, to accepted sexual practices and to the status of women in the sixty years under discussion, the mainstream theatre has tended to be conservative in its presentation of marital and sexual matters, especially in continuing to reinscribe a public/private opposition determined by gender.

Organizational, Professional and Personal Roles in an Era of Change: the Case of the Catholic clergy

Power, Georja Jane, res.cand@acu.edu.au January 2003 (has links)
The effects of transformations in the cultural context on the structures of the Catholic organization and consequently on the identity and role of priests is explored in this research. The way these transformations affect clergy relationships with the church, diocesan authorities and parishioners, and ultimately the psychological wellbeing of priests, are investigated in the light of recent research and literature. Quantitative and qualitative data from the Catholic Church Life Surveys (CCLS) of 1996 and 2001 is analyzed, together with qualitative data generated through semi-structured interviews. The theoretical underpinning for the interpretation of changing clerical identity and roles and the relationship dynamics is personality theory, including a neoanalytic model (Horney, 1950), and a psychodynamic approach using an iconic reading of Freud (Cozzens, 2000). Social identity theory (Haslam, 2001), and Fowler’s (1996) theory of faith development also contribute to the theoretical framework. The NEO-FFI personality factors (Costa & McCrae, 1992) are used as covariates throughout the analysis. Four major themes are addressed in this research. First, ambiguities in the identity and role of clergy brought about through structural changes in the organization following the Second Vatican Council. Second, cultural changes which challenged the institutional hierarchical structure of the church and some of its theological and ecclesiological positions. Third, the contribution to satisfaction with ministry and personal wellbeing made by priests’ relationships with the organization, diocesan authorities, and parishioners, as well as intimacy with colleagues and friends. Finally, the impact of psychodynamic factors on the spiritual and psychological dimensions of priestly life. It was found that although the sacramental role of priests remains largely intact, their identity as religious and spiritual leaders is under challenge through greater participation in parish life by educated and theologically trained lay people. It is argued that the competence to appropriately express leadership, preach meaningful homilies and promote spiritual growth in parishioners rests on the attainment of mature psychological development and continued faith and spiritual formation. Analysis of personality factors showed that sound organizational and structural supports are needed to assist priests in their personal and professional lives. Over half the priests in the present study were found to be vulnerable to emotional and psychological distress, while others had strong resources to cope with increased ambiguity and complexity in ministry. A review of literature suggests that cultural changes over the last 30 years compound the effects of Vatican II, particularly the patriarchal hierarchical structure of the organisation and teachings on sexual morality that are under pressure from changing attitudes by both clergy and laity. Quantitative and qualitative analyses showed that there is little support by priests for the obligation of celibacy, the successful attainment of which demands a high level of mature psychosexual development. It was argued that without a strong clerical commitment to celibacy, education and training programs currently being implemented in seminaries would be largely ineffectual. Key factors impacting on the relationships of priests with parishioners were found to be first, a decline in the authority of priests, second, the revelations of sexual abuse by priests, and third, the difficulty numbers of clergy have with establishing and maintaining close, intimate relationships. The NEO-FFI factors Neuroticism, Extraversion, and Agreeableness were found to be significant predictors in the quality of relationships between priests and parishioners, with 30% of clergy experiencing difficulty in these relationships. It was argued that maturity in spiritual, psychological, and psychosexual development was found to impact significantly on clergy personal wellbeing and professional competence, which in turn contributes to satisfaction with ministry.

De l'Ancien Empire à l'époque romaine / Cultual organisation and religious topography of the IXth Upper-Egyptian province (Akhmîm). From the Old Kingdom to the roman period.

Claude, Marion 08 December 2017 (has links)
Since G. Maspero began digging in the area in 1884, the IXth Upper-Egyptian province has yielded an abundance of inscribed funerary material (stelae, coffins, offering tables, figures, papyri…). These documents dating from the Old Kingdom to the Roman Period deliver many informations on the toponyms, the cults and the priestly titles of the province, and especially concerning its capital city, Akhmîm. They also constitute the basis of a prosopographical study of the priests. A complement to these objects may be found in other texts from the remaining temples of the area as well as from sanctuaries of some of the other provinces. Finally, the province and its cults are cited in other religious or funerary compositions. The research presented in this PhD dissertation is built around the study of this wide array of documents.Beginning with an archaeological survey of the province and the delimitation of its extent, the analysis then focuses on the various toponyms relating to the local cults. The goal is, as far as possible, to locate them and understand how they fit into the cultual system of the area. The study then focuses on the deities residing in these sanctuaries in order to highlight the specificities of their cults in the province, whilst the analysis of the numerous priestly titles mentionned in the private documentation aims at determining their role and status in the hierarchy of the temple staff. The final summary allows to gather those thematic studies in a diachronic perspective so as to point out the evolution of the religious topography and the cultual organisation of the cults of the IXth Upper-Egyptian province in light of the available sources between the Old Kingdom and the Roman Period, in order to replace it in the wider context of the cultic development in ancient Egypt.

[pt] CREIO FIRMEMENTE QUE DESDE SEMPRE O SENHOR ME CRIOU PARA SER SACERDOTE: A VOCAÇÃO SACERDOTAL À LUZ DA ANÁLISE DE NARRATIVA / [en] I FIRMLY BELIEVE THAT THE LORD HAS ALWAYS RAISED ME TO BE A PRIEST: THE PRIESTLY VOCATION IN THE LIGHT OF NARRATIVE ANALYSIS

[en] The present dissertation investigates, through the Narrative Analysis and the theoretical contribution offered by Interational Sociolinguistics, the vocational narratives of future priests who are still in the formative process in institutions known as Seminary. The data presented in this research were generated in qualitative interviews with seminarians residing in the same Seminary as the researcher, who is also a seminarian. The research also has an auto-ethnographic sensitivity, since the researcher is also an integral part of a Catholic Seminary and, therefore, an active member of the same community that served as a research field. The analysis, of a qualitative and interpretative nature, takes place in a micro-interactional perspective and from the theoretical framework of Narrative Analysis (LABOV and WALETSKY, 1968; LABOV, 1972; BRUNER, 1997; LINDE, among others). Yet, we use the notion of Total Institution (GOFFMAN, 1961; FOUCAULT, 2006) to understand questions about the context in which these narratives are produced. The results describe that these narratives are based on a system of coherence of their own, in which rhetorical movements of orientation and evaluation are articulated, among which we highlight successful or successful evaluations of vocational choice and the idea of that the divine call is eternal and therefore innate. Also, it is possible to perceive the complex narrative construction in which the notion of agency is sometimes attenuated by the narrator due to the constant presence of two agents: I and God. In addition, the data indicate that these micronarratives dialogue with great narratives (BRUNER, 1997; SHOSHANA, 2013) understood by us as canonical and institutionally diffused among the seminarians.

Áronské požehnání / The Aaronic Blessing

Svoboda, Boris January 2014 (has links)
SVOBODA, Boris: The Priestly Blessing. [Master thesis] / Boris Svoboda. - Charles University in Prague. Hussite Theological Faculty; - Supervisor: Doc. Mgr. Jiří Beneš, Th.D. - Degree: Master. - Prague: HTF UK, 2014. 65 p. This thesis deals with the exposition of the textual unit of The Aaronic Blessing from The Book of Numbers, chapter 6, verses 22-27. Its aim is to characterize theological meaning of the textual unit and also to provide insight into the meaning of the phenomenon of blessing in The Old Testament. Reach of this theological reflexion surpasses the scope of Old Testament judaism and provides an impulses also for the christian theology, for usage and developing of blessing in its context. Results of the exegesis can present knowledge about understanding of blessing not only in its original context, but also in the understanding of contemporary society. Blessing gives strong impulses for personal lives, but it is also connected with the issues of whole society and with approaching the goal of peace and the status of world, in which will of God is implemented. Cost/Effectiveness Analysis of Obtaining Operational Estimates of Reference Evapotranspiration, Peninsular Florida, USA

Kittridge, Michael G. 20 July 2007 (has links)
The objective of this study is to conduct a cost/effectiveness analysis of the computation of reference evapotranspiration (ETo) in the peninsular of Florida. A meteorological station on the Fort Meade Mine in Polk County, Florida was used to provide data for the calculation of ETo. Five ETo equations were tested to determine the accuracy and cost/effectiveness to the fully measured ASCE Penman-Monteith (Full ASCE-PM) equation on daily, monthly, and annually time steps. The ETo equations ranged in amounts of parameters from the Full ASCE-PM to the Hargreaves. The energy terms accounted for approximately 90% of the total ETo flux. Solar radiation alone also accounted for approximately 90% of the total ETo flux. The highest cost-effectiveness ratios were equations that were able to accurately estimate values without relying on expensive meteorological equipment and/or omitted terms that had a lesser influence on the magnitude of ETo. The seasonal variability in the climate and consequently the emphasis of each meteorological parameter on ETo will create seasonal errors in the reduced sets of the ETo equations. Large seasonal errors were associated with temperature based ETo equations, while solar radiation based ETo equations accurately preserved the seasonal trends. At least in Florida, solar radiation is the key driving force in both the magnitude and the seasonality of ETo.

No. of bitstreams: 1 6456.pdf: 860131 bytes, checksum: 1d1751262ab0a8346eadc0305c8e77d3 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-06-16 / Financiadora de Estudos e Projetos / Trying to understand a process through which individuals are raised in certain skills and dispositions, "physical and moral states" that are required by society as a whole, but also by specified groups to which one belongs, I conducted a research about the formation of Catholic priests process. I tried to understand from the experience of the diocese of São Carlos / SP, which dynamic, actors and situations were involved in this process of socialization, through which are cultivated in seminarians a number of provisions that in the future will contribute to the exercise of their priestly ministry. This set of provisions that I call priestly habitus is unconsciously and sometimes deliberately instrumentalized by these social actors, both in the daily performance of their social roles and in the maintenance activity or achievement of social positions in the Catholic Church or even in other fields such as the academic one. The dynamics of such priestly habitus cultivation takes place in a broad context, larger than the boundaries of a seminary, covering a range of training situations arranged through an institutionalized itinerary experiences that culminates in ordination. Such a priestly itinerary - equipped with native significance through a structured vocational speech that reduces the importance of profane motivations in the admission at the seminary provides the trajectories of these actors with a purity of inclination that omits the possibility of other interests (less transcendental ones). Finally, I discuss how to some members of the Catholic clergy, to be a priest not as regarded in the official speeches, but in the daily practices is less of an inescapable fixed identity than a contingency identification activity, which is evoked or omitted by these social actors according to the nature of relations at stake.

[pt] A APLICAÇÃO DO ITER FORMATIVO DA NOVA RATIO NO DESENVOLVIMENTO DA ANTROPOLOGIA DA VOCAÇÃO PRESBITERIAL / [en] APPLICATION OF THE FORMATION ITER OF THE NOVA RATIO IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF PRESBYTERIAL VOCATION S ANTROPOLOGY.

LEANDRO DE SOUZA CAMARA 19 May 2022 (has links)
[en] The process of priestly formation is constituted by an itinerary that corresponds to a priest s life from his vocation awakening to the end of his days on Earth. In this path, there are the stages of initial and permanent formation that complement each other. This can be characterized as a process that besides being unitary is also wholesome insofar as it interrelates the affective, spiritual, pastoral, and intellectual human dimensions in a seminarian life up to the priesthood within a dynamic iter whose aim is to encourage him towards the necessary maturity to accomplish his mission. The Archdiocesan Seminary of Saint Joseph in Rio de Janeiro has a formative pathway based upon the Ratio Institutionis Sacerdotalis: The gift of the priestly vocation, in which this research focuses as its material object, elucidating the contribution of the stages and dimensions of formation towards the development of an anthropology of the priestly vocation. In this context, this present work runs through some patristic authors’ theologies and their related priestly praxis, the current anthropological challenges for priestly formation, as well as seminarians’ onward human and spiritual development throughout their formation iter. Divided in five parts, this research’s starting point describes priesthood theologies, and anthropological traits in the patristic testimony of Didache, Clement of Rome, Ignatius of Antioch, Polycarp of Smyrna, Papias of Hierapolis, The Shepherd of Hermas, Barnabas, and Justin of Rome, undertaking the unitary and integral aspects of the formation process in which dimension elements of formation, vocation ministries formative stages, minor seminary, propaedeutic, discipleship, configuration and synthesis are developed. Theological and anthropological aspects of the formative process conclude this research as it highlights challenges regarding the development of the person being formed and proposals whose aims are human and vocation maturation.
