Time, Altruism, and Hope: Factors that Increase the Consistency of Pro-environmental Behaviors

Alexander, Lauren Christina 01 January 2013 (has links)
A variety of factors have been shown to be associated with environmental attitudes but few studies demonstrate a link between these factors and pro-environmental behaviors. This study examined how a future temporal perspective, environmental altruism, and hope are related to (1) engaging in pro-environmental behaviors and (2) length of time engaging in pro-environmental behaviors. Participants completed the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory (Zimbardo & Boyd, 1999), a measure of pro-environmental behaviors based on altruistic reasoning, the Trait Hope Scale (Snyder et al., 1991), and a self-report measure which requested that participants estimate how long they have engaged in pro-environmental behaviors. Statistical analyses supported the relationship between altruism and pro-environmental behaviors, however, the role of hope and a future orientation were not supported as potential motivators associated with engaging in pro-environmental behaviors. Altruism continues to be associated with engaging in pro-environmental behaviors, however, it is still unclear what moderates this relationship. Moreover, this research highlights the likelihood that engaging in pro-environmental behaviors is influenced by a complex web of motivating factors.

EFFECTS OF A SHORT-TERM MINDFULNESS INTERVENTION ON DEPRESSION AND IMMUNE FUNCTION

Walsh, Erin C. 01 January 2011 (has links)
Pro-inflammatory cytokines have been implicated in the pathophysiology and maintenance of depression. This study investigated the effects of a short mindfulness intervention on pro-inflammatory correlates of depression (IL-6 and TNF-α) and selfreported psychological health. Sixty-four college females were assigned to a four-week mindfulness training group or a contact-control group. Cytokines and psychological health were assessed at baseline, post-treatment, and 3-month follow-up (mindfulness group only). IL-6 and TNF-α significantly decreased from baseline to post-treatment in the mindfulness group only; these changes were sustained at 3-month follow-up. No between-group differences in psychological health emerged. Although reductions in proinflammatory cytokines in the mindfulness condition were not attributable to psychological changes, they may serve to protect against the development of future depressive episodes.

Waldorf Teachers and Environmental Issues : - Behavior, Values, Attitudes and Feelings of Responsibility

Rikner, Amanda January 2010 (has links)
<p>Today it has become critical that people adapt their behavior and lifestyles to environmental constraints. Teachers are supposed to teach pupils to accept personal responsibility in regard to these problems. The pedagogies of Waldorf and public schools have different outlooks on nature, hence it was hypothesized that Waldorf and public teachers would differ in regard to pro-environmental behavior and factors explaining such actions. An e-questionnaire measuring pro-environmental behavior, biospheric and altruistic values, feelings of personal responsibility, and pro-environmental attitudes was filled out by 68 Waldorf teachers and 73 public teachers from different municipalities in Sweden. The results suggest that Waldorf teachers report higher biospheric values (partial <em>eta2</em> = .46, <em>p</em> < .001), more pro-environmental behavior (partial <em>eta2</em> = .39, <em>p</em> < .001), more feelings of personal responsibility, (partial <em>eta2</em> = .32, <em>p</em> < .001), and higher altruistic values (partial <em>eta2</em> = .12, <em>p</em> < .001), than public school teachers do. There were a few limitations in reliability and possibly with social desirability. However, the present study paves the way for an understanding of how pedagogy can be of help in preventing further environmental problems.</p>

Žaloba pro zmatečnost / Action for the failure of justice

Šrámková, Lucie January 2015 (has links)
1 SUMMARY The nullity plea is one of the three extraordinary remedies provided for in the Civil Procedure Code. Its purpose is to correct substantial procedural errors that occurred in judicial decisions or in the preceding civil proceedings. If one of the nullity grounds, regulated by Article 229 of the Civil Procedure Code, is present and all other conditions of admissibility are fulfilled, the court cancels the earlier final decision which terminated the proceedings, regardless of whether or not it is correct from the matter-of-fact point of view. The nullity plea represents a unique institute that solves the conflict between the interest in protecting legal certainty founded by a final decision of the court, and the interest in a defective decision being eliminated. The conditions of its admissibility are therefore set so as to only limit its application to cases in which the second interest prevails. The purpose of the diploma thesis is to provide a complex analysis of the nullity plea, in particular the conditions of its admissibility and the proceedings pertaining thereto. It is divided into six chapters. Chapter One describes the historical development of the nullity plea; nevertheless, it is not only restricted to this institute, but also contains a description of other remedies which were used to...

Výživné pro nezletilého (srovnávací studie) / Maintenance and support of a minor (comparative study)

Neumannová, Kateřina January 2015 (has links)

Sorghum pericarp pigments are associated with the contents of carotenoids and provitamin A

Shen, Yanting January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Food Science Institute - Food, Nutrition, Dietetics and Health / Weiqun Wang / Sorghum is a staple crop consumed in certain regions of Africa and Asia, where vitamin A deficiency is prevalent. However, the correlation of sorghum intake and vitamin A deficiency is inconsistent. The objective of this study was to identify and quantify the carotenoids and pro-vitamin A in the selected sorghum accessions with various pericarp pigments by using LC-MS. Among of total five carotenoids (α-carotene, β-carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin, and β-cryptoxanthin) that were identified and quantitated, three (α-carotene, β-carotene and β-cryptoxanthin) are precursors of vitamin A. The highest content of total carotenoids was detected in the sorghum accessions with yellow pericarp (PI656096, PI585374, PI563448, PI585351), while the highest β-carotene content was found in the accessions with brown or yellow pericarp (PI655996, PI656096, PI585374, PI563448, PI585351). The lowest carotenoids were found in the accessions with white pericarp (PI533943, PI656112, PI565121, PI560493). The pro-vitamin A was 584.9 ± 38.9 ng/g DW in yellow pericarp, 250.6 ± 28.9 ng/g DW in brown pericarp, and 89.0 ± 12.3 ng/g DW in white pericarp, respectively. It appeared the phenotypic diversity of sorghum pericarp colors was strongly associated with the contents of carotenoids and pro-vitamin A, indicating a different impact of various sorghum varieties on vitamin A deficiency and suggesting a possible prevention of vitamin A deficiency by breeding certain sorghum varieties with pericarp pigments.
