Cette thèse porte sur la construction de modèles de substitution en régimes transitoire et permanent pour la simulation thermique, en présence de peu d'observations et de plusieurs sorties.Nous proposons dans un premier temps une construction robuste de perceptron multicouche bouclé afin d'approcher une dynamique spatio-temporelle. Ce modèle de substitution s'obtient par une moyennisation de réseaux de neurones issus d'une procédure de validation croisée, dont le partitionnement des observations associé permet d'ajuster les paramètres de chacun de ces modèles sur une base de test sans perte d'information. De plus, la construction d'un tel perceptron bouclé peut être distribuée selon ses sorties. Cette construction est appliquée à la modélisation de l'évolution temporelle de la température en différents points d'une armoire aéronautique.Nous proposons dans un deuxième temps une agrégation de modèles par processus gaussien dans un cadre multifidélité où nous disposons d'un modèle d'observation haute-fidélité complété par plusieurs modèles d'observation de fidélités moindres et non comparables. Une attention particulière est portée sur la spécification des tendances et coefficients d'ajustement présents dans ces modèles. Les différents krigeages et co-krigeages sont assemblés selon une partition ou un mélange pondéré en se basant sur une mesure de robustesse aux points du plan d'expériences les plus fiables. Cette approche est employée pour modéliser la température en différents points de l'armoire en régime permanent.Nous proposons dans un dernier temps un critère pénalisé pour le problème de la régression hétéroscédastique. Cet outil est développé dans le cadre des estimateurs par projection et appliqué au cas particulier des ondelettes de Haar. Nous accompagnons ces résultats théoriques de résultats numériques pour un problème tenant compte de différentes spécifications du bruit et de possibles dépendances dans les observations. / This PhD thesis deals with the construction of surrogate models in transient and steady states in the context of thermal simulation, with a few observations and many outputs.First, we design a robust construction of recurrent multilayer perceptron so as to approach a spatio-temporal dynamic. We use an average of neural networks resulting from a cross-validation procedure, whose associated data splitting allows to adjust the parameters of these models thanks to a test set without any information loss. Moreover, the construction of this perceptron can be distributed according to its outputs. This construction is applied to the modelling of the temporal evolution of the temperature at different points of an aeronautical equipment.Then, we proposed a mixture of Gaussian process models in a multifidelity framework where we have a high-fidelity observation model completed by many observation models with lower and no comparable fidelities. A particular attention is paid to the specifications of trends and adjustement coefficients present in these models. Different kriging and co-krigings models are put together according to a partition or a weighted aggregation based on a robustness measure associated to the most reliable design points. This approach is used in order to model the temperature at different points of the equipment in steady state.Finally, we propose a penalized criterion for the problem of heteroscedastic regression. This tool is build in the case of projection estimators and applied with the Haar wavelet. We also give some numerical results for different noise specifications and possible dependencies in the observations.

A avaliação identificou o suporte fornecido por este modelo de processo às organizações que desejam alcançar níveis 2 e 3 do CMM. A avaliação resultou na elaboração de propostas para complementar as macro-atividades (Core Workflows) do RUP, visando satisfazer as práticas-chave do CMM. O CMM apresenta um modelo de avaliação de processo que busca atingir a maturidade dos processos da organização, é específico para o desenvolvimento de software, os aspectos de melhoria contínua são fortemente evidenciados e várias organizações já estão utilizando-o com sucesso. O RUP surgiu como uma proposta de unificar as melhores práticas de desenvolvimento de software. Foi experimentada a utilização de um sistema de gerência de workflow, de fato um servidor de colaboração, para apoiar o processo de desenvolvimento de software. The assessment identified the facilities that RUP offers to support an organization aiming at CMM levels 2 and 3. The assessment resulted in the elaboration of propositions to complement the Rational Unified Process in order to satisfy the key process areas of CMM. CMM shows a process model that is far fetched to reach the process maturity of an organization, is specific for the software development, and strongly emphasizes the aspects of continuous improvement and several organizations already used it with success. RUP describes how to apply best practices of software engineering. It was experimented the use of a Workflow Management System, in fact a collaboration server, to support the software development process. The experimental environment was assessed considering the requirements identified by various researchers for an environment to effectively support a software development process. The prototype software development environment is a web-based process support system, which provides means to assist the management of software development projects and help the interaction and exchange of information between disperse members of a development. The Rational Unified Process presents a well defined approach on software project management and software engineering processes, but it is not an approach centered on systems management concerns. Therefore it lacks activities involving issues as cost management, human resource management, communications management, and procurement management. PME is a flexible tool that can be accessed through the Internet, supporting the collaboration between team members, and offering the benefits of the Web, with intuitive navigation through of links and pages. It helps to support management control, providing options to plan and monitor the project, and supports events of the process, as changing states, and communicates users of their attributed tasks.

Policy agenda-setting and the use of analytical agenda-setting models for school sport and physical education in South AfricaDesai, Anver January 2011 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / This study focused on policy agenda-setting models for school sport and physical education in South Africa. The primary objective was to assess and propose options for improved agenda-setting by focussing on the use of agenda-setting models and by applying it to physical education and school sport and the policy agenda of the national government. The study has shown that pertinent school sport and physical education policy issues, as supported by key role-players and principal actors, were initially not placed on the formal policy agenda of government during the research investigation period (2005-2009). However, during 2010 and 2011 the issue of school sport and physical education received prominent attention by authorities and these developments were subsequently included in the study. The study aimed at contributing to existing policy agenda-setting models and by recommending changes to the Generic Process Model.The study also made a contribution by informing various role-players and stakeholders in education and school sport on the opportunities in policy agenda-setting. The study showed
that policy agenda-setting is a vital step in the Generic Policy Process Model. Policy agendasetting in South Africa is critical, as it is important to place new and emerging policy issues on the policy agenda and as a participative public policy process is relatively new in this young democracy. The reader should not confuse the study as one dealing with school sport and physical education primarily, but rather as a research investigation dealing with policy agenda-setting models as applied to school sport and physical education.The secondary objectives of the study included the development of a historical perspective on trends and tendencies in education and sport in South Africa. A second objective was to provide theoretical perspectives on public policy and specifically on policy agenda-setting.From these theoretical perspectives, the Generic Policy Process Model was selected to use as a model that provided guidance on the overall policy process normally followed in South Africa. The Issue Attention Cycle and Principal Actor Models on Agenda-Setting were selected to apply to the case study to specifically ascertain important factors related to policy agenda-setting such as the identification of key role players as well as key policy issues. The Generic Policy Process Model provided for both a comprehensive set of phases as well as
specific requirements and key issues to be addressed during each phase of the policy process.In terms of findings the study found that a number of specific agenda-setting elements or phases needed to be added to the Generic Policy Process Model, which includes a problem stage, triggers, initiator, issue creation and actors or policy stakeholders.The Principal Actor Model to agenda-setting was selected for application to the case as different actors have different levels of success at each policy stage. In the South African experience it is important to look at who sets the policy agenda and why, who can initiate agenda-setting and the role played by these principal actors in the agenda-setting process.Issue emergence often places policy issues on the policy agenda. The public is initially
involved in issues, but in the long term public interest declines. The government realizes the significant costs involved in placing policy issues back on the agenda. This leads to a decline in issue attention by policy-makers and the public. The Issue Attention Cycle Model of agenda setting was used to analyse this phenomenon in South African Education policy.The study provides a case assessment of the South African experience. From the research findings, a set of conclusions and recommendations were developed for improved policy agenda-setting models and implications for school sport and physical education, as well as tools to place it on the national policy agenda were identified. The research findings suggest that pertinent school sport and physical education policy issues, as supported by key roleplayers,stakeholders and principal actors were not placed on the formal policy agenda of the government as a vital step in the policy process between 2005 and 2009. Ever since, principal policy actors, civil society NGOs, and government officials placed sufficient pressure on the Minister of Basic Education to place Physical Education on the agenda. Subsequently,Minister Angie Motshega has placed physical education in the school Curriculum under the subject Life Orientation and Lifeskills. It has become evident from the research that agendasetting is both necessary to, and a complex phase in, the policy-making process.This study has shown that major policy issues such as physical education and school sport were neglected during the period 2005 and 2009 despite reformed and advanced policy cycles in government. It has also shown that the role of policy agenda-setting in the overall policymaking process was revisited by government in the subsequent period 2010/2011 and placed on the policy agenda. Specific lessons of experience emanated from this process.The study recommends that the triggers of the agenda-setting phases be added to the Generic Policy Process Model, which should include the problem stage, triggers, initiators, issue creation, actors and policy stakeholders. Principal actors in the agenda-setting model in South Africa want the issue of physical education and school sport to be part of the school
curriculum, and therefore be placed back on the policy agenda by the Government on its institutional agenda. Furthermore, the study showed that actors wanted it to be compulsory in all phases of the school (Foundation, Intermediate, Senior, GET, FET) and that it should have the same legal status as other subjects.The important findings include that:Comprehensive policy process models such as that of Dunn, Wissink and the Generic Process model may need to be reviewed to incorporate more fully the policy-agenda setting stages of the overall process; Current policy agenda setting models in use are relevant and valuable in identifying key role players as well as key issues and considerations regarding the policy process; Institutional arrangements to strengthen the role of NGOs and lower level institutions,such as schools to participate in policy agenda setting are important; and the study has shown that a number of key factors have been identified that had a key influence on policy agenda-setting in the case of physical education and school sport in South Africa. These included the influence of changing political leadership, the competency of policy capacities in government, the profile of issues in the media etc.The key findings of the study have shown that further potential exists to improve monitoring and evaluation and policy analysis.The study made a set of recommendations to principal actors such as the Minister of Education, Minister of Sport and Recreation, non-governmental organisations, interest groups, department officials and pressure groups. A set of research topics was also identified for future research.

Issues related to research methodology increasingly occupy a central role in the field of International Positioning Process. It is becoming clear that greater attention to methodological issues is essential for the development of this field into a management discipline.
Many efforts have been made to distinguish the disciplines/practices in international business. However, the field is still criticized for lack of theories and absence of paradigm. A recent survey of literature noted that the field has made more progress in finding research questions than in answering them, one of them being Identifying Dimensions for the International Positioning Process (IPP) for defence goods. This is largely because of lack of a theoretical foundation continued to plague international business research.
Research in International Business is at critical crossroad today, with increased emphasis on developing theoretical concepts and testing empirical relationships rooted in such concepts. Such a transformation critically depends on conceptualizing and operationalizing the derivative constructs in an international business environment. This is motivated by management’s desire to gain profits and competitive advantage through appropriate market selection, right market entry mode decision and competitive positioning techniques. The combination of these three aspects of international business, leads to the development of the concept, called International positioning process (IPP).
While researchers have made significant efforts on new techniques and approaches of international positioning processes, certain important issues remain largely unexplored. First, it is not challenging to find methodologies and approaches for market selection, entry mode choice and global competitive advantage, but in understanding how to blend them together for tailoring IPP. There is a need for developing holistic model for customized IPP that aims on translating positioning process into global competitive advantage. Another observable omission in the past literature is the missing link among three components of positioning process: market selection, entry mode choice and competitive positioning.
To address this neglect, the present study attempts to develop a model for global positioning process. Development of a significant bond among three components of global positioning process, not only creates harmony among them, but aims to make IPP more effective.
The study aims to develop set of dimensions for the construct, international positioning process (IPP). Specifically the objectives of this study are as under,
• To conceptualize a multi- variable construct IPP.
• To develop information framework for IPP.
• To evaluate/analyze the dimensions developed for IPP, such that they satisfactorily fulfill reliability properties.
• To differentiate IPP across industries and develop generic and industry- specific model.
• To operationalise the model for defence industry.
• To evolve comprehensive set of conclusions for IPP.
In an attempt to achieve these objectives, this study attempts to integrate three aspects of international business: market selection, entry mode decision and competitive positioning of goods/services, and evolved the concept of International Positioning Process. The study identifies 91 variables for IPP through exhaustive literature review and develops an information framework that comprises four cardinal dimensions, twelve adjuvant dimensions and 35 decision variables. The information mentioned in the framework, is evaluated using statistical tool package – R, and refined using factor analysis. The primary data was collected using structured questionnaire by eliciting response from 329 International Business Companies (IBCs) which are involved in international business. The data of 329 IBCs explored that all the four cardinal dimensions, mentioned in the framework, are the reliable steps for IPP. The outcome of analysis develops the generic model for IPP that comprises 19 highly influencing decision variables in contrast to 91 variables available in the literature, which are finally summarized into 4 statistically significant steps for effective IPP.
To tailor the customised and industry specific model for IPP, it was imperative to study how IPP differs across the industries. The difference in international positioning paradigm across the industries, analysed with multivariate discriminant analysis, one way ANOVA and factor analysis, indicates defence industry as most sensitive for making international business decisions. It evolves that defence industry seeks more safe, focused and efficient international positioning strategy for the international positioning of its products. This study attempts to customize the IPP model for defence goods which has not been addressed in the literature yet. The study explores set of highly influencing decision variables for international positioning of defence products, which are finally summarized into 4 statistically significant steps.
The model is operationalised for Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) of India. It assesses international marketing capability of DRDO, identifies suitable markets, and makes decision for appropriate market entry modes and competitive positioning of selected defence goods. The study evolved five most suitable international markets for selected DRDO systems. Risk analysis is performed for all the identified markets to evaluate suitability of the market and to decide entry modes. The IPP model for defence industry is successfully implemented in one of the identified markets i.e. Malaysia, for the target DRDO systems. The study evolves that defence organizations attain more effectiveness in international positioning process through holistic mode as compared to extended & traditional modes. However, like any other study this does provide scope for further research and IPP can be a candidate for further extensions and refinements.

This thesis deals with process modeling respectively application specific modeling methodology developed by prof. Ing. Václav Řepa Csc. for the selected company active in manufacturing. The main objective and part of the thesis forms creation of process model. It's preceded by introductory description of the selected company and its global long-term goals set by management, SWOT analysis revealing strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats, on the basis of which is elaborated a strategy to exploit opportunities for the development of strengths. Before analyzing the processes and the design of process model Balanced Scorecard analysis is realized. Within its four perspectives, I propose and summarize the identified targets, along with their metrics, current and desired state. Further it's followed by process analysis and elaboration of process models to global (Eriksson-Penker model) and detailed (BPMN notation) level. Models have added the descriptive tables and description and main points of the design are summarized in the end. The main objective of work is followed by others, represented by the comparison of designed model and current situation in company, where is implemented quality management system ISO 9001:2000 (comparing similarities and differences, problems of quality system, etc.) and assessment of enviromental maturity of the company and its functioning from process perspective, using the knowledge model Michael Hammer PEMM (Process & Enterprise Maturity Model). Information obtained from the analysis and designs are put into context with each other to ensure consistency of whole design and my thesis and summarized in Chapter Conclusion.

Diploma thesis is about business process reengineering (BPR) and its business processes in student organization ESN VSE Prague -- Buddy System. Main goal is business process reengineering and their support by information system BuddyIS, which helps to meet stu-dent's requirements. First chapter debates about processes theirs modelling and reengineer-ing. It discusses methodologies of BPR in general and then it chooses own methodology for this thesis. Next part is practical and starts with characteristic and analysis of student organization ESN VSE Prague -- Buddy System. It describes cultural environment, current status of IS/ICT and global process model. Global process model is core for next chapter, which identifies processes in organization and chooses those ones for reengineering. Those chosen processes are analysed more in detailed in detailed process diagram based on BPMN. Next part is considering process redesign based on awareness and understanding their workflow. According to redesign, proposed changes are implemented to information system BuddyIS based on principles of OpenUP. Last chapter analyses aftereffects caused by business process reengineering according to process audit made by M. Hammer (PEMM) and chosen factor measuring process performance. Fact that, chosen business processes are supported by information system BuddyIS is main benefit of this thesis.

Estes incluem o engajamento em atividades cotidianas que não se relacionam diretamente à perda, sendo singular e dependente do significado atribuído pela pessoa a estas atividades. Objetivo: Conhecer os significados atribuídos às atividades cotidianas relacionadas ao enfrentamento orientado para a restauração de mulheres após a morte por câncer, em até seis meses, do cônjuge idoso. Metodologia: Trata-se de estudo qualitativo, do tipo exploratório e descritivo. Constitui-se como população alvo do estudo, viúvas: do sexo feminino; que mantinham relacionamento com o falecido por meio de casamento ou união estável; residentes no Estado de São Paulo; cujos cônjuges, falecidos de 2 a 6 meses em decorrência de câncer, tinham acima de 60 anos e foram atendidos pela equipe do Núcleo de Cuidados Paliativos do Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo, no período de maio a outubro de 2015. As viúvas que aceitaram participar do estudo foram convidadas para uma entrevista individual, que ocorreu entre outubro e dezembro de 2015. Para sua condução, foi utilizado um roteiro semi-estruturado que buscava conhecer se os participantes realizavam ou pensavam em realizar atividades cotidianas relacionadas ao enfrentamento orientado para a restauração, e quais os significados que atribuíam a seu desempenho. O conteúdo das entrevistas foi gravado, transcrito e posteriormente analisado pelo processo de codificação, gerando temas abrangentes. Resultados: Identificou-se um primeiro tema nos resultados que se relacionou aos fatores que influenciavam no significado das atividades cotidianas relacionadas ao enfrentamento orientado para a restauração, os quais foram: a) sofrimento decorrente da percepção da ausência do marido no cotidiano; b) desempenho do papel de cuidadora; c) percepção negativa sobre a qualidade do relacionamento prévio com o cônjuge; d) participação nas circunstâncias que envolveram o óbito e nos processos decisórios de tratamento no período de adoecimento do cônjuge; e) apoio da rede informal e a presença de animais de estimação; f) espiritualidade. O segundo tema que emergiu dos resultados se referiu ao relato das entrevistadas sobre sua participação nas entrevistas conduzidas nesta tese. Discussão: O reconhecimento dos fatores que influenciavam no significado das atividades cotidianas favorece a reflexão sobre o apoio prestado às viúvas após a morte do cônjuge, especialmente ao se considerar que as mulheres se beneficiam mais de intervenções com ênfase no enfrentamento orientado para restauração. Entende-se que estudos que utilizam entrevistas como procedimento de coleta de dados podem beneficiar o enfrentamento do processo de luto dos participantes, pois potencialmente os auxiliam a elaborarem as experiências vivenciadas. Conclusão: Acredita-se que esta tese represente avanços na compreensão acerca do engajamento em atividades cotidianas no processo de luto, o que favorece a abordagem em Cuidados Paliativos prestada aos familiares após o óbito do paciente / Introduction: The death of the spouse represents several challenges to be faced by bereaved widows, mainly during the first six months. It commonly predisposes to health decline with impact in daily life. To understand the grieving process the \"Dual Process Model of Coping with Bereavement\" is highlighted. To this theoretical model, one of the types of stressor that the widows have to deal with is the restoration-oriented. It includes the involvement in daily activities that are not related to loss. This involvement is unique depending on the meaning given by the person to daily activities. Objective: To know the meaning attributed to daily activities focused on restoration by women after the death of their elderly spouse due to cancer, up to six months after death. Method: It is a qualitative exploratory and descriptive study. Its target population is constituted by widows: a) female; b) who had a relationship with the deceased exclusively through marriage or stable union; c) residing in São Paulo state; d) whose spouses have died within the past 2-6 months due to cancer and were over the age of 60; e) and whose spouses had been attended by the Palliative Care Service of The Hospital das Clínicas of the University of São Paulo Medical School during the period May- October 2015. The spouses that agree to participate in the study were invited to a private interview, which occurred from October to December 2015. To its conduction a semi-structured guideline was used which aimed to know if the participants took part or thought about taking part in restoration-oriented daily activities, and the meaning they attribute to them. The content of the interviews were recorded, transcribed and analyzed using the coding process. Comprehensive themes emerged from this process. Results: A first theme was identified on the results related to the influencing factors upon the meaning of daily activities focused on restoration which were: a) distress resulting from the perception of the husband\'s absence in daily life; b) caretaker role performance; c) negative perception about the quality of the previous relationship with the spouse; d) participation in the circumstances that involved the spouse\'s death and in the decisionmaking procedures of treatment during his illness; e) support from the informal network and the presence of pet animals; f) spirituality. The second theme that emerged from the results referred to the interviewees\' report about their participation in the interviews conducted in this thesis. Discussion: The recognition of the influencing factors upon the meaning attributed to daily activities gives opportunity for reflection on the support given to widows after their spouses\' death, especially taken into account that women benefit more from interventions focused on restoration. It is understood that studies using interviews as data collecting procedure can benefit the participants facing the bereavement, since it can potentially help them to elaborate their experiences. Conclusion: It is believed that this thesis represents advances in the understanding about the involvement in daily activities during bereavement, what helps the Palliative Care provided to the family after the patient death

Caracterização de um processo de software para projetos de software livre / Characterizing a software process for Free Software projects.Christian Robottom Reis 23 April 2003 (has links)
Software Livre é software fornecido com código fonte, e que pode ser livremente usado, modificado e redistribuído. Projetos de Software Livre são organizações virtuais formadas por indivíduos que trabalham juntos no desenvolvimento de um software livre específico. Estes indivíduos trabalham geograficamente dispersos, utilizando ferramentas simples para coordenar e comunicar seu trabalho através da Internet. Este trabalho analisa esses projetos do ponto de vista de seu processo de software; em outras palavras, analisa as atividades que realizam para produzir, gerenciar e garantir a qualidade do seu software. Na parte inicial do trabalho é feita uma extensa revisão bibliográfica, comentando os principais trabalhos na área, e são detalhadas as características principais dos projetos de software livre. O conteúdo principal deste trabalho resulta de dois anos de participação ativa na comunidade, e de um levantamento realizado através de questionário, detalhando mais de quinhentos projetos diferentes. São apresentadas treze hipóteses experimentais, e os resultados do questionário são discutidos no contexto destas hipóteses. Dos projetos avaliados nesse levantamento, algumas características comuns foram avaliadas. As equipes da grande maioria dos projetos são pequenas, tendo menos de cinco participantes. Além disso, existe uma distribuição equilibrada entre algumas formas de organização descritas na literatura, incluindo o \'ditador benevolente\' de Eric S. Raymond e o \'comité\' exemplificado pelo projeto Apache. Dentre um conjunto de domínios de aplicação determinados, os projetos de software livre se concentram nas áreas de engenharia e desenvolvimento de software, redes e segurança, e aplicações multimídia. Com relação às atividades do processo de software, pode-se dizer que a maioria dos projetos tem requisitos fundamentalmente definidos pelos seus autores, e que a base de usuários de grande parte dos softwares é composta dos seus desenvolvedores e da comunidade de software livre. Uma parcela significativa dos projetos baseia-se em outros softwares pré-existentes, e em padrões publicados previamente. Pouca ênfase é dada à usabilidade, assim como às atividades de garantia de qualidade convencionais. Surpreendentemente, também recebem pouca atenção as atividades de revisão de código e teste sistemático. Entre as ferramentas que os projetos utilizam, se destacam as listas de discussão e os sistemas de controle de versão. Foi estabelecida uma correlação entre a dimensão da equipe do projeto e as atividades de engenharia de software que realiza, mas não se confirmou um vínculo entre estas atividades e a idade do projeto. Foram também estabelecidas relações entre o número de linhas de código do software do projeto e a sua idade, tamanho e domínio de aplicação. Estes resultados são exibidos neste trabalho, e estarão publicamente disponíveis no site Web do projeto. O trabalho conclui descrevendo partes essenciais do processo de software em projetos de software livre, e oferecendo sugestões para trabalhos posteriores. / Free Software (or Open Source) is software provided with source code that may be freely used, modified and redistributed. Free Software Projects are virtual communities of developers that work on a specific free software product. These developers work geographically dispersed, using simple tools to communicate and coordinate their actions over the Internet. This work analyzes these projects with respect to their software process; in other words, the activities they do to produce, manage and ensure the quality of their software. In the initial sections, I perform a large review of related work in this field, and provide an overview of the main characteristics of free software projects. The main contents of this dissertation is based on two years of participation in free software projects, and on a survey based on a questionnaire that describes over five hundred different free software projects. 1 present thirteen initial hypothesis, using them as a framework to analyze the results of the survey. Among the projects evaluated in this survey, some common aspeets were observed. For instance, most projects have a small team, with less than five developers. I also found a balanced distribution of leadership systems described in other works, including Eric Raymond\'s \'benevolent dictator\' and the committee exemplified by the Apache project. The domains in which these projects tend to concentrate are software engineering and development, networks and security, and multimédia applications. Concerning the software process activities, most projects have their functional requirements established by their authors: the user base for most of the projects includes the development team and the free software community. A large proportion of the projects surveyed are based on pre-existing software, or on previously published standards. Little emphasis is placed on usability and conventional fornis of quality assurance. Remarkably, this lack of emphasis on conventional process includes activities like review and testing. Among the tools used by the projects, mailing lists and versioning systems such as CVS come out ahead by a strong margin. A correlation was identified between the size of the project\'s team and the software engineering activities that it realizes, but I could not establish a link between the age of the project and these activities. Other correlations were established between the size of the project\'s codebase (in terms of lines of code) and its age, size and application domain. The dissertation concludes describing essential parts of the software process in free software projects, and offering suggestions for future work.
