Consumer Acceptance, Barriers and Success Factors of Peer-to-Peer Carsharing in Perspective of Connected Car Services and Autonomous VehiclesAmann, Volker 01 July 2017 (has links) (PDF)
Until now, car ownership has been a symbol of wealth and personal freedom. The high value of the car in society has been enforced by the powerful automotive industry with their well-funded marketing budgets. Currently, there are one billion cars worldwide, possibly increasing to 2,8 billion by 2050. However, the awareness of the negative consequences of car ownership on the environment, cities, and individuals in terms of reduced personal and financial freedom is increasing. The trend towards collaborative consumption involving activities like sharing and trading is leading to a shift from ownership to the access of goods and services. In this context, carsharing is receiving more and more attention and the number of users for B2C carsharing models is increasing exponentially. The least-developed business model with the biggest opportunities in terms of environmental benefits is peer-to-peer carsharing (P2P carsharing). Providers face daunting problems in reaching critical mass, due to a lack of consumer acceptance. Academic contributions on the topic are rare. The goal of this dissertation is to capture the acceptance factors, barriers and success factors for P2P carsharing. Additionally, the phenomenon is explored within the perspective of disruptive technologies, including the connected car and autonomous vehicles. A comprehensive literature review including collaborative consumption, carsharing, and in particular P2P carsharing, has been conducted. A mixed-method approach has been used. Qualitative interviews with leading academic and industry experts in the field of collaborative consumption and shared mobility, as well as a focus group discussion, have been executed. In the quantitative survey, the identified factors have been integrated into the Technological Acceptance Model (TAM), the theoretical foundation of the work. A representative survey was conducted in Austria with 801 respondents. The results were generated by applying a partial least squares analysis. Results show that the TAM model, including the extensions, appeared to be applicable. In particular, people with an innovative mindset are open to the usage of the business model. The main motivational factors for participating are economic, utility and enjoyment. The personal attachment towards one's own car remains one of the main barriers, next to fear of sharing and loss of convenience. Success factors in increasing acceptance are - among others - trust, value-added services and keyless car exchange. The preferred usage model for autonomous vehicles tends to be ownership. Even though the awareness of P2P carsharing is rather low among the Austrian population, 13,6% state that they would use the service. Sharing one's privately owned autonomous vehicle with others met with even higher levels of approval from the respondents. The extension of the TAM, as well as its application to a new field outside information system (IS) research, can be viewed as the major academic contribution of this work. Practical implications for P2P carsharing providers and the automotive industry include strategic recommendations regarding the current disruptive trends within the automotive industry. In particular, concrete measures have been identified to scale the business model by addressing new customers and reducing the identified barriers by providing extensive knowledge of relevant success factors.

Redesign of Gas Hydraulic Suspension for Product Service System : A Master Thesis Work at Strömsholmen ABAnkarberg, Martin, Jilnö, Erik January 2018 (has links)
In these times, when manufacturing firms wonder how to integrate products and services into innovative offerings, how should products be designed to be of most value? This study is the investigation of this question for the manufacturing firm Strömsholmen AB, which designs gas springs and hydraulic suspension. The research has led to interviews of personnel to identify challenges and a workshop to generate new service ideas. By analyzing a specific gas hydraulic suspension product, this study shows that designing for product service systems (PSS) with a life-cycle perspective specifically for manufacturing, assembly, delivery, use, maintenance and remanufacturing, can greatly reduce costs and open up for innovative PSS business models. Using Design for Assembly, Design for Disassembly, Design for Serviceability and Design for Remanufacturing shows how concrete improvements to a product can be made. Improvements that show the potential of a redesign for the gas hydraulic suspension. Integrating products and services and pursuing the ideas and methods of this thesis, will ultimately make Strömsholmen better prepared to differentiate, to stay competitive, to deepen customer relations and to gain greater profits long-term.

Previous issue date: 2015-01-26 / This thesis has as main caractheristics, the research, analysis and the proposal of a model that considers the most relevant factors for the inclusion of the services’ process in manufacturing based companies, especially for companies seeking the nationalization its supply basis. Within this concept of transition and incorporation of services, which is known in the literature as 'servitization', and using as a research subject one electrical hardware manufacturer, it was assessed the planning and execution of servitization for offshore technical services, related to the supply chain of the Subsea Oil and Gas Production industry segment. To support the understanding on the company in regards to services and sertitization and support this research, it was necessary to review the literature on Operations Management in Services, Product - Service Systems, Servitization, Lean Thinking in Services, Products and Services Project Development and Local Content Requirements. Based on the documentation provided by the company, and comparing it with the reviewed academic literature, it was found that the models proposed by the literature do not contain all the elements required to directly apply them on such business. Based on this assessment, it is found the most relevant elements for servitization and it is proposed a model for reflection, which fullfils most specifically the gaps that negatively influence the operational excelance and the corporate strategy of a company related to the Oil and Gas industry.

Assessment of the environmental benefits provided by closed-loop strategies for industrial products / Evaluation des bénéfices environnementaux liés à des cycles de vie de produits en flux bouclésAmaya Rivas, Jorge Luis 08 October 2012 (has links)
Products with multiple use phases have to be considered regarding new economic and environmental pressures. Therefore, the related complex life cycles of (re)manufactured products have to be modeled and assessed by designteams for a better understanding of their performance. This thesis presents methodologies to represent, model andassess closed-loop product lifecycle (focused on remanufacturing strategies). The study shows how to establishenvironmental assessments for remanufactured products life cycles and how to compare them to environmentalassessments for classical life cycles. The present study shows how to establish the models and how to compare the environmental assessments ofremanufactured products life cycles vs. classical life cycle scenarios. The objective is to provide easy to use methodsand tools for designers to allow them quantifying the environmental benefits related to the use of a closed loopstrategy. In this project, a life cycle assessment, life cycle bricks, and a parametric model of the products are used toevaluate and compare the environmental benefits provided by the remanufacturing. The methodologies and modelshave been developed based on previous works, such as the the life cycle bricks concept developed by Gehin et al.[2007].On the other hand, the thesis proposes a model to assess the product-service systems elements and their respectivelife cycle from an environmental point of view. Here, the thesis focuses on the development of a model whichintegrates the product lifecycle within those parameters by a product-service system strategy, taking into accountphysical elements, as well as the infrastructures network, unit services design, supply chain actors and theirinteractions. Finally, a model has been developed to assess from an environmental point of view the data of the operations andactivities around product life cycle of the products with final non classic disposition scenarios (remanufacturing asend-of-life scenario and multiple uses by the disposition of the service offers system as a business strategy). Themethodologies and models proposed allow identifying and distinguishing impacts between the different product lifecycle stages and readjust the designers’ decision at the product design stage. The results can be further used insimulation, to evaluate the environmental performance of different product life cycle end-of-life scenarios.

Design Ethnography and Service Design Thinking on Triadic Relationships in Product-Service SystemsWahlman, Fredrik January 2017 (has links)
This study has used design ethnography and service design thinking to understand triadic relationships in product-service systems. The data used in this research has been collected in an explorative user research phase of an overarching service design project at Scania CV. The service design project was of purpose to apply a user-centered design approach to investigate Scania Driver Services. The study finds Design Ethnography and Service Design Thinking as fruitful in understanding triadic relationships in product-service systems, but also identify challenges that require further exploration in order to enable the best possible value-propositions. The study contributes to understanding what kind of knowledge that applying design ethnography and a service design thinking approach to understand triadic relationships in product-service systems concern. A summary of knowledge identified is presented below. Understanding and knowledge concern: • Contradictions between the purchaser and end-user perception. • Actor perception of another actor(s). • Actor perceived evolution of another actor over time. • Actor change of view due to its own evolution. • Relationships of the service provider, purchaser and end user. • Misconceptions between actors. • Variation in communication between actors. • What the communication between actors is perceived to concern. • Additional actors than initially considered that are crucial for understanding the triadic relationship.

Méthode de conception de produit intégrant ses services en phase conceptuelle appliquée aux projets de construction / Method for the conceptual phase of an Integrated Product and Service Design applied to Construction ProjectMauger, Cyril 19 December 2014 (has links)
The conceptual phase is based on very fuzzy and incomplete information about clients' needs. It constitutes the core of clients' satisfaction about the future system. Architectural programming, or briefing process, focuses on the early stages of the conceptual phase of construction projects, i.e. the requirements definition. Current practices and research in Architecture-Engineering-Construction tend to be experience-based, solution-oriented, and with a late formalisation of business needs into building requirements. The requirements definition is far more supported by theories, models, tools, and techniques in other engineering disciplines (i.e. Mechanical, Industrial, and Software Engineering). This research aims to propose an architectural programming reasoning based on existing requirements engineering knowledge from these other engineering disciplines. The methodology followed to develop this reasoning is a transdisciplinary approach based on a combination of Design Research Methodology, and Design Science. Besides the identification of modelling languages covering different viewpoints associated with the briefing process, a gap is identified regarding modelling constructs associated with a “meta-space” design artefact. This design artefact and its associated modelling language (i.e. the meta-space diagram) support the formalisation of the transition from activities to space. The resulting conceptual framework proposes a step by step early formalisation of the transition from clients' business needs to building requirements. All along the thesis, different case studies are used to illustrate the proposals.

A Vision for a Better User Experience in a Smart HomeMa, Sicong, Shah, Prina, Che, Jun January 2014 (has links)
The maturity of smart home technologies and wireless capabilities, increased accessibility through mass-market availability of internet is making the feasibility of the smart home more realistic. The added incentives to better control utilities and communications to make lives more sustainable, has also driven the growth in the market. This thesis investigates the advantages of the smart home both for the environment and user. Outlining opportunities for business by finding gaps in the market is to better synthesise products and services to improve the user experience. A literature review, market research and ethnographic research was undertaken to understand the current state of the smart home industry and identify the main stakeholders that impact the user. A customer journey map was created to visualise the user process and highlighted problem areas. A survey showed users were most concerned about quality, functions and saving energy and money. The survey perceptions on interactions with technology also shed light into the necessity for robust and reliable technology and adaptable products and services. The final outcome is a prototype model to improve user experience, including stakeholder influence, user needs and the connections between different stakeholders from pre-sale, sale and after-sale.

Development of a Systems Dynamics model to assess the value of alternative manufacturing technologiesTao, Cheng, Li, Chengqi January 2014 (has links)
Recently trade-off among producers, customers and society/ environment is one of the most popular concerns in industry. This issue conducts the decision making by manufacturers on the selection between two alternative techniques, ECM and MM. The purpose of this study was to explore the problem in how to assess the value of a product/ service in the early stages of the design activity. Through the simulation tool of System Dynamics, a model helps to quantify all the values which were involved. The result of this model was that the coming 10 years NPVs of two alternatives were assessed. Contrasting the alternatives on different manufacturing processes and market conditions, the decision makers could find out an appropriate scenario with an appropriate technique. This approach was verified to ensure the accuracy and practicability.

Assessment of Eco-Labelling and Green Procurement from a Strategic Sustainability PerspectiveBratt, Cecilia January 2011 (has links)
Efforts to reduce negative impacts from consumption and production include voluntary market-based initiatives. Examples are the concept of eco-labelling and the concept of green procurement. These have emerged as policy instruments with great potentials to steer product innovation and purchasing decisions in a sustainable direction. This potential has been recognized by the United Nations, the European Union, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and national governments through, e.g., various programmes and schemes. The aim of this thesis is to assess current criteria development processes within eco-labelling and green procurement from a strategic sustainability perspective and to describe possible improvement potentials from such a perspective to make these instruments more supportive of sustainable product and service innovation. A previously published framework for strategic sustainable development, including a definition of sustainability and generic guidelines to inform strategies towards sustainability, is adapted and used for this purpose. Criteria development processes in two Swedish eco-labelling programmes and at a governmental expert body for green procurement are studied. This includes interviews with criteria developers, studies of process documents and a case study at the governmental expert body for green procurement in which two criteria development processes were shadowed. The result reveals several strengths but also gaps and thus potentials for improvement. The criteria development processes and the resulting criteria mostly concern the current market supply and a selection of current environmental impacts outside the context of long-term objectives. Neither sustainability nor any other clearly defined long-term objective is agreed upon, and the criteria are not structured to support procurers, suppliers and product developers in a systematic and strategic stepwise approach towards sustainability. Recommended improvements include a more thorough sustainability assessment, communication of clearer objectives, broader competence in the criteria development groups and more emphasis on the dialogue and interaction between key actors. This includes an extended view on both the product concept and actors involved. Based on this, a new criteria development prototype is suggested, which aims at widening the scope from some currently known product impacts to the remaining gap to sustainability. During its further development and implementation, the criteria development prototype will be tested in successive iterations of action research together with experienced practitioners within eco-labelling and green procurement.
