Evaluation of solar energy powered seawater desalination pro-cesses: A review

Al-Obaidi, Mudhar A.A.R., Zubo, R.H.A., Rashid, F.L., Dakkama, H.J., Abd-Alhameed, Raed, Mujtaba, Iqbal M. 20 September 2022 (has links)
Yes / Solar energy, amongst all renewable energies, has attracted inexhaustible attention all over the world as a supplier of sustainable energy. The energy requirement of major seawater desalination processes such as multistage flash (MSF), multi-effect distillation (MED) and reverse osmosis (RO) are fulfilled by burning fossil fuels, which impact the environment significantly due to the emission of greenhouse gases. The integration of solar energy systems into seawater desalination processes is an attractive and alternative solution to fossil fuels. This study aims to (i) assess the progress of solar energy systems including concentrated solar power (CSP) and photovoltaic (PV) to power both thermal and membrane seawater desalination processes including MSF, MED, and RO and (ii) evaluate the economic considerations and associated challenges with recommendations for further improvements. Thus, several studies on a different combination of seawater desalination processes of solar energy systems are reviewed and analysed concerning specific energy consumption and freshwater production cost. It is observed that although solar energy systems have the potential of reducing carbon footprint significantly, the cost of water production still favours the use of fossil fuels. Further research and development on solar energy systems are required to make their use in desalination economically viable. Alternatively, the carbon tax on the use of fossil fuels may persuade desalination industries to adopt renewable energy such as solar.

Agribusiness in Brazil leverages the economy, the main economic crop is soybeans, which every year exceeds the volume of production and the movement of farmers shows that it will continue, but little by expansion into new lands, but by increased productivity. The evolution of productivity achieved in recent decades has much contribution of genetic improvement and quality seed production, which is the most efficient vehicle of adoption of new technologies. In contrast to developments in business management is still small, lack focus on economic and financial management in addition to production management, will still be necessary investments in its application as a management tool for the result. Having high productivity is key to the longevity of properties / companies, but knowing production costs and items that have relevance in its construction is what will make a difference in assertiveness of decisions by farmers. Thus the aim of this work was to analyze the history of soybean production costs with emphasis on understanding of the role of seeds. It was used 32 properties located in Rio Grande do Sul that have soybean crop with the main economic activity and are advised by the company Agros. Historical data were analyzed and conducted detailed survey of the input costs. The results show that: the seed item has a relatively low importance in cost of inputs, when compared to its importance in the construction of productivity; investments in seed by acquiring new cultivars are evidenced in productivity growth, the cost of agrochemicals significantly increased as a result of problems and situation of pests field that existing technologies in seeds does not include; the margins obtained from the soybean, are directly associated with productivity and keeps directly related to the cost of production. This information is fundamental for the farmer to use in his decision-making, and that whenever he needs to reduce production costs, realize that is not in the seed the set point.

Five levels of corn replacement by BW (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100%) were studied, using five male lambs with live weight of 30 kg, in a Latin square 5 X 5 design. The experimental diets were composed of concentrate and hay Tifton 85 (Cynodon spp) in a forage:concentrate ratio of 60:40. To determine the intake and digestibility were collected samples of food, orts and feces. Urine was collected in buckets for a period of 24 hours to determination of nitrogen balance. Data were interpreted with to variance analysis and regression, using the t test at 5% significance. The BW present higher value for the non fiber carbohydrate and protein fraction with fast ruminal degradation (A+B1), which brought a greater proportion of these fractions in diets replacing 100% of corn by the BW and greater timing of energy supply and protein in the rumen. There wasn t effect (P>0.05) levels of substitution of intake, digestibility of nutrients, balance of nitrogen compounds and weight gain. Different levels of substitution didn t affect (P>0.05) pH values and concentrations of volatile fatty acids, but for the concentration of ammonia nitrogen (N-NH3) was found linear reduction (P<0.05) with the level of replacement, in which each 1% BW promoted reduction of 0,11 mg/dL in the concentration of N-NH3, which may be related to increased ruminal availability of energy, which allows greater use of ammonia for microbial growth. The addition of BW caused a reduction of 51,15% in the cost of ration. It was concluded that the BW can replace the corn in concentrate rations for sheep. Galić Dragan 16 April 2015 (has links)

Imajući ovo u vidu, jagoda zahteva posebnu pažnju u svim etapama proizvodnje (gajenja) tj. od zasnivanja jagodnjaka do berbe i prodaje.

/
The cultivated strawberries (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.), known for its delicate fragrance, flavour, and rich vitamin and mineral content, can be grown in most arable regions of the globe. Strawberry production, like many high-value crops, is resource and labour-intensive. Therefore, attention to detail is required at all stages of strawberry production, from establishment to harvest and marketing. The objective of this study was to determn the cost of strawberry establishment and achived economic effects of short-day and day-neutral strawberry production in south-western Ontario, Canada. Site Specific Design Optimization Of A Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine Based On Minimum Cost Of Energy

Sagol, Ece 01 January 2010 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis introduces a design optimization methodology that is based on minimizing the Cost of Energy (COE) of a Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT) that is to be operated at a specific wind site. In the design methodology for the calculation of the Cost of Energy, the Annual Energy Production (AEP) model to calculate the total energy generated by a unit wind turbine throughout a year and the total cost of that turbine are used. The AEP is calculated using the Blade Element Momentum (BEM) theory for wind turbine power and the Weibull distribution for the wind speed characteristics of selected wind sites. For the blade profile sections, either the S809 airfoil profile for all spanwise locations is used or NREL S-series airfoil families, which have different airfoil profiles for different spanwise sections, are used,. Lift and drag coefficients of these airfoils are obtained by performing computational fluid dynamics analyses. In sample design optimization studies, three different wind sites that have different wind speed characteristics are selected. Three scenarios are generated to present the effect of the airfoil shape as well as the turbine power. For each scenario, design optimizations of the reference wind turbines for the selected wind sites are performed the Cost of Energy and Annual Energy Production values are compared.

Hydrogen production from biomass

Sarkar, Susanjib 11 1900 (has links)
Hydrogen can be produced from biomass; this hydrogen is called biohydrogen. Biohydrogen produced in Western Canada can partially contribute to meeting the demand for hydrogen needed for bitumen upgrading. Gasification and pyrolysis are two promising pathways for producing biohydrogen in a large-scale plant. Syngas, produced from the gasification of biomass, and bio-oil, produced from fast pyrolysis of biomass, can be steam reformed to produce biohydrogen. The cost of biohydrogen delivered by pipeline to a distance of 500 km is $2.20 per kg of H2, assuming that a plant utilizes 2000 dry tonnes of whole-tree biomass per day processing it in a Battelle Columbus Laboratory (BCL) gasifier. For forest residue- and straw-based biohydrogen plants the values are similar: $2.19 and $2.31 per kg of H2, respectively. Maximum economy of scale benefits are realized for biohydrogen production plants capable of processing 2000 and 3000 dry tonnes per day using BCL and GTI (Gas Technology Institute) gasification technology, respectively. The cost of biohydrogen from fast pyrolysis ($2.47 per kg of H2 from a 2000 dry tonne per day plant), using forest residue as the feedstock, is higher than the cost of biohydrogen produced by gasification. Carbon credits of about $120-$140 per tonne of CO2 are required to make biohydrogen competitive with natural-gas-based hydrogen.

Pinheiro, Rafael Silvio Bonilha. January 2009 (has links)
Abstract: The experiment was carried out aiming to evaluate discard ewes slaughtered in different physiological stages and terminated in confinement, as for carcass yields and its cuts, as well as the percentages of each non-component of the carcass and the economical result of the preparation of these animals for slaughtering. 21 Santa Inês ewes were used, with average age of six years old, distributed into the following treatments: EL = ewes which remained in lactation for 60 days with their respective lambs and slaughtered one day after weaning of the lambs; EWL = ewes that remained in lactation for 60 days with their respective lambs and other 30 days approximately without lambs, aiming to recover lost body weight during breastfeeding, and, subsequently, slaughtered; and ENC = ewes that remained in confinement for 60 days and did not deliver during the year. The results obtained in this research showed that ewes from ENC presented higher hot (45.00%) and cold (44.73%) carcass yields, compared to females from EL (40.80% and 40.66%). True yield was proximate between females from the different treatments, with average value of 50.10%. Carcass cuts (shoulderblade, neck, ribs, loin and leg) yields were similar among all ewes slaughtered in the distinct physiological conditions, with average values of 18.78%, 9.34%, 27.36%, 7.77% and 34,70%, respectively. Carcass non-components yields were similar among ewes slaughtered in different physiological stages, except for liver, blood, udder values and internal fat. The economical result was positive for all experimental treatments; however, the best financial return was obtained for animals from treatment EWL and the worst for animals from treatment ENC. / Orientador: André Mendes Jorge / Coorientador: Hirasilva Borba Alves de Souza / Banca: Francisco de Assis Fonseca de Macedo / Banca: Nivea Maria Bracacci Lopes Zeola / Banca: Cledson Augusto Garcia / Banca: Ciniro Costa / Doutor

We used 40 crossbred sheep de Santa Inês, uncastrated, with an average initial weight of 18.85 ± 2.80 kg and mean age 5.0 ± 2.0 months, distributed in a completely randomized design, on a 2x2 factorial design, consisting of two forage to concentrate ratios: 30:70 and 70:30 with their energy levels: 2.67 and 2.10 Mcal of ME/kg DM and two offerings of water (water ad libitum and restricted by 50%) with 10 replicates during 73 days. To evaluate the characteristics and performance of the carcasses, the animals were slaughtered at an average weight of 27.62 ± 3.06 kg. Proximate composition (% moisture, % ash, % protein and % ether extract) of Longissimus dorsi was determined, and the same was considered the color parameters (L *, a * and b *), shear force, cooking loss and pH. The water restriction caused effect (P<0.05) on dry matter and nutrients, and total daily gain weight regardless of roughage and concentrate. There was no effect (P>0.05) of water restriction on feed conversion and efficiency. The total weight gain, average daily gain, feed conversion and efficiency were influenced by the proportions of forage and concentrate. The evaluation of economic results revealed that all combinations of water supply and levels of dietary energy to produce crossbred sheep de Santa Inês were positive for gross income and profit. Higher total cost of the diet was obtained when the animals were fed with high level of concentrate. There was no effect (P<0.05) of water restriction on the chemical composition, in variations of color (L *, a * and b *), weight and cut yields, and the evaluation parameters for carcass yield, except to the final weight. Weights and carcass were influenced (P<0.05) the proportion of forage and concentrate, no differences in cooling losses and biological yield. There was effect (P<0.05) of restriction of water in cooking loss. It was concluded that, when associated higher proportion of roughage in the diet with water restriction animal performance is reduced and the combination of diet and fluid restriction and concentrate more than 50% of consumption allows higher net income and improved benefit cost ratio. Higher weights and yields of hot and cold carcass are obtained in animals fed diets with a higher share of the concentrate.
