Evaluating Zotero, SHERPA/RoMEO, and Unpaywall in an Institutional Repository Workflow

Sergiadis, Ashley D.R. 01 September 2019 (has links)
East Tennessee State University developed a workflow to add journal publications to their institutional repository and faculty profiles using three tools: Zotero for entering metadata, SHERPA/RoMEO for checking copyright permissions, and Unpaywall for locating full-text documents. This study evaluates availability and accuracy of the information and documents provided by Zotero, SHERPA/RoMEO, and Unpaywall for journal publications in four disciplines. The tools were less successful with works authored by arts and humanities and education faculty in comparison to works authored by medicine and health sciences and social and behavioral sciences faculty. The findings suggest that publisher practices contributed to the disciplinary differences.

Asymmetric Shapes of Radio Recombination Lines from Ionized Stellar Winds

Ignace, Richard 01 January 2019 (has links)
Recombination line profile shapes are derived for ionized spherical stellar winds at radio wavelengths. It is assumed that the wind is optically thick owing to free-free opacity. Emission lines of arbitrary optical depth are obtained assuming that the free-free photosphere forms in the outer, constant expansion portion of the wind. Previous works have derived analytic results for isothermal winds when the line and continuum source functions are equal. Here, semi-analytic results are derived for unequal source functions to reveal that line shapes can be asymmetric about line center. A parameter study is presented and applications discussed.

The Effect of Processing Conditions on the Energetic Diagram of CdTe Thin Films Studied by Photoluminescence

Collins, Shamara P. 02 July 2018 (has links)
The photovoltaic properties of CdTe-based thin films depend on recombination levels formed in the CdTe layer and at the heterojunction. The localized states are resultant of structural defects (metal sublattice, chalcogen sublattice, interstitial), controlled doping, deposition process, and/or post-deposition annealing. The photoluminescence study of CdTe thin films, from both the bulk and heterojunction, can reveal radiative states due to different defects or impurities. Identification of defects allows for potential explanation of their roles and influence on solar cell performance. A thorough understanding of the material properties responsible for solar cell performance is critical in further advancing the efficiency of devices. The presented work is a systematic investigation using photoluminescence to study CdTe thin films with varying deposition processes. The thin (polycrystalline) films explored in this study were deposited by either the elemental vapor transport technique (EVT) or close spaced sublimation (CSS). Two device architectures were investigated, the typical CdTe/CdS device and the CdSeXTe1-X (CST) alloy device. Post-deposition annealing processes were either laser or thermal. The study of the CdTe thin films is grouped in three general categories: (a) EVT films: Intrinsic and Extrinsic (Group V: Sb and P), (b) CST alloys, and (c) Post-deposition Laser Annealed (LA) films. The main goal of this dissertation is to understand the influence of fabrication procedures (deposition conditions, post deposition thermal and chemical treatments, added impurities, and device architecture) on the defect structure of the CdTe thin films. The behavior of the photoluminescence (PL), studied as a function of the measurement temperature and excitation intensity, provides insight to the mechanism causing the radiative recombination levels. Analysis of the PL spectra for CdTe films with intrinsic doping demonstrated stoichiometric control of native defects for both the Cd- and Te-rich conditions. PL spectra of CdTe:Sb films showed unique Sb-related bands. Also, impurity-related defects were identified in the CdTe:P spectra. Spectral analysis support the need for optimization of dopant concentration. The effects of selenium (Se) thickness and post-deposition processing on the formation of CST alloy were demonstrated in the changing PL spectra. The native defects (and complexes) identified in films with thermal anneal processing were the same as those identified in films with laser anneal post-deposition processing. The PL data were collected and other characterization techniques were used to support the defect assignments. A repository of material properties, which include the recombination levels along with structural defect assignment for each of the CdTe deposition processes, is provided. This project will lend the solar cell community information on CdTe defects for different processing conditions, ultimately influencing the fabrication of improved solar cells.

Rovibrational study of DNO3 nu5 band and collisional effect studies of CH3F microwave spectra with and without Stark effect

Koubek, Jindrich 15 September 2011 (has links) (PDF)
The work presented in this thesis belongs to the domain of theoretical and experimental gas phase molecular spectroscopy. It consists of two parts dedicated to two relatively different aspects in this field. The first part presents a high resolution analysis of the ν5 fundamental band (NO2 in plane bending mode) positions and intensities of D14NO3 (deuterated nitric acid) in the 11 µm spectral region. For this study, we used an infrared spectrum of D14NO3 recorded in the 700−1400 cm−1 region on a Fourier transform spectrometer at Bergische Universität in Wuppertal (Germany). Our analysis demonstrates that the fundamental ν5 band centered at 887.657 cm−1 is strongly perturbed. Indeed, it proves that 5^1 and 7^1+9^1 energy levels of DNO3 are coupled through A and B type Coriolis resonances. The resonance scheme for the isotopologue D14NO3 therefore differs substantially from the schemes of H14NO3 and H15NO3 that feature dominantly Fermi type resonances. The second theme treated in this work is devoted to the lineshapes of pure rotational transitions of CH3F with the study of collisional broadening (collisions CH3F-CH3F and CH3F-He) of optical transitions and their Stark components. The microwave measurements were realised at ICT in Prague. Their analysis enabled to provide collisional parameters using various line profiles (Voigt, Rautian, Speed dependent) for the J, K → J + 1, K (K = 0, ..., J) transitions with J = 1 and J = 3 as well as for their various Stark components J, K, M → J + 1, K, M' (|M| = 0, ..., J ; |M − M'| = 0, 1). Moreover, a correct use of model based on Infinite Order Sudden approximation led to very satisfactory results of the observed line-mixing effects. The retrieved experimental results complete and extend the previous studies and provide the first successful demonstration of the ability of the IOS approximation to model line-mixing effects among Stark transitions

The promise of nitrogen plasma implanted gallium arsenide for band gap engineering

Risch, Marcel 31 March 2008
This investigation examines band gap engineering of the GaAsN alloy by means of plasma ion implantation. The strong redshift of the alloy's band gap is suitable for telecommunication applications and thus stimulated much interest in recent years. Nitrogen (N) ion implantation into gallium arsenide (GaAs) results in a thin shallow N-rich layer below the surface. However, the violent implantation process also modifies the concentrations of gallium and arsenide. The core of this thesis is a novel method for prediction of the band gap from the conditions in the processing plasma.<p>The first important variable, the number of implanted ions, is obtained from the Lieberman model for the current during high-voltage Plasma Ion Implantation (PII). A review of the model's assumptions is provided as well as a comprehensive discussion of the implantation which includes error boundaries. The predicted and measured ion currents agree within error boundaries. The number of implanted ions can therefore be obtained from the prediction.<p>The distribution of the implanted ions was subsequently explored by simulations such as TRIM and TRIDYN. It was found that the nitrogen content in GaAs is limited by the sputtering of the surface atoms. Furthermore, the content of gallium increases near the surface while the content of arsenic decreases. The predicted ratios of the constituents in the implanted layer is such that the alloy cannot form by ion implantation alone; it could be reconciled by annealing.<p>Preliminary samples were produced and tested for the formation of the GaAsN alloy by Raman spectroscopy. No evidence for bonds between N and either Ga or As was found in the as-implanted samples. The thesis concludes with a discussion of the necessary steps to synthesize the GaAsN alloy.
