Exploring emotive listening experiences through continuous measurement of self-report and listening profiles / Maria Louisa Schutte

Schutte, Maria Louisa January 2011 (has links)
Training can enable performers to express music in a personal and emotional way while communicating aesthetic impressions to an audience. Little research has been done on the emotive experiences of performing musicians listening to their own performances. The main goal of this study was to develop a reliable way to investigate emotive content of such experiences through a combination of listening profiles and continuous measurement. This empirical, methodological study used a mixed-method design. Responses from formally and informally trained musicians were tested. The methodology consists of two parts: listening profiles (Part I), and the continuous measurement of self-reported emotional response to music (Part II), supported by interviews. Part I consists of a demographic questionnaire, a listening test and a personality test. Part II consists of a computerised questionnaire with four questions: 1) word sorting, 2) word, colours, and facial expressions checklists, which participants use to indicate their emotional responses while the music plays, 3) free description, and 4) rating scales. Data was obtained during three test periods. Part I results revealed that personality, illness, preferences, and psychological factors influence the emotive content of listening experiences. Participants’ response time and manner of word sorting was also supportive of their profiles. Part II results revealed that listeners pay attention to both structural and performance elements as well as emotive content in both prescribed and personal musical tracks. Only a few participants were able to identify the predetermined emotion of the prescribed musical tracks. Participants’ experiences seemed to be influenced by training and personal preferences. Listening to their own recorded performances, informally trained participants were able to focus progressively less on performance elements and more on emotive content, while formally trained participants seemed to focus progressively more on performance elements, and less on emotive content. / Thesis (MMus)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2012

Relationships between Missing Response and Skill Mastery Profiles of Cognitive Diagnostic Assessment

Zhang, Jingshun 13 August 2013 (has links)
This study explores the relationship between students’ missing responses on a large-scale assessment and their cognitive skill profiles and characteristics. Data from the 48 multiple-choice items on the 2006 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT), a high school graduation requirement, were analyzed using the item response theory (IRT) three-parameter logistic model and the Reduced Reparameterized Unified Model, a Cognitive Diagnostic Model. Missing responses were analyzed by item and by student. Item-level analyses examined the relationships among item difficulty, item order, literacy skills targeted by the item, the cognitive skills required by the item, the percent of students not answering the item, and other features of the item. Student-level analyses examined the relationships among students’ missing responses, overall performance, cognitive skill mastery profiles, and characteristics such as gender and home language. Most students answered most items: no item was answered by fewer than 98.8% of the students and 95.5% of students had 0 missing responses, 3.2% had 1 missing response, and only 1.3% had more than 1 missing responses). However, whether students responded to items was related to the student’s characteristics, including gender, whether the student had an individual education plan and language spoken at home, and to the item’s characteristics such as item difficulty and the cognitive skills required to answer the item. Unlike in previous studies of large-scale assessments, the missing response rates were not higher for multiple-choice items appearing later in the timed sections. Instead, the first two items in some sections had higher missing response rates. Examination of the student-level missing response rates, however, showed that when students had high numbers of missing responses, these often represented failures to complete a section of the test. Also, if nonresponse was concentrated in items that required particular skills, the accuracy of the estimates for those skills was lower than for other skills. The results of this study have implications for test designers who seek to improve provincial large-scale assessments, and for teachers who seek to help students improve their cognitive skills and develop test taking strategies.

MAX-DOAS Measurements of Nitrogen Dioxide and Aerosol

Mendolia, Deanna 02 August 2012 (has links)
Multi-axis differential optical absorption spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS) was applied to retrieve tropospheric NO2 and aerosol vertical profiles from downtown Toronto, and King City, Ontario during select periods in 2006 – 2010. Linear regression of MAX-DOAS NO2 vertical column density (VCD) versus OMI (satellite) VCD yielded a good correlation (R = 0.88) and MAX-DOAS negative bias of 20%, which was within the reported uncertainty of the MAX-DOAS and OMI VCD. The average regional Toronto VCD (remotely-sensed via MAX-DOAS and OMI) was half of the near-road VCD obtained in-situ (2.4 x 1016 ± 1.2 x 1016 molec/cm2). MAX-DOAS measurements of O4 were coupled with radiative transfer modeling to obtain vertical aerosol extinction profiles and aerosol optical depth (AOD). A strong linear agreement was observed between PM2.5 concentration and aerosol extinction coefficient (R = 0.92), and MAX-DOAS versus sun photometer AOD (slope = 0.94; R= 0.90).

Ict Utilization Of Exporter Enterprises A Case Study Of Aegean Region Exporters

Taskin, Ekin 01 April 2006 (has links) (PDF)
In this thesis, the e-awareness of exporter enterprises is investigated in the Aegean Region. This thesis aims to propose policy recommendations for the Aegean Region decision makers to increase ICT utilization of the exporter enterprises to attain competitiveness in global markets. The research is conducted with a web-based survey that was open for two months. Survey aims to find out the enterprises&rsquo / ICT profile, for what reasons and with what amount of importance they use ICT, their reluctance to new ICT tools implementation and their needs for successful implementation of ICT tools. 3140 enterprises, which are the members of Aegean Exporters&rsquo / Associations, are informed about the survey by an e-mail notification, 267 exporter enterprises are participated to the survey. As it was expected, the survey showed that although the enterprises are using low-level ICT tools, they have desire to implement ICT tools because they believe that implementing ICT will increase their sales and profits. However, due to the problems in human resources, financial resources, information and know-how and the problems in network of relationships, implementing more ICT tools will not be easy in the short &ndash / run.

Development capability profiles of selected reverse engineering techniques

Duss, Alexander 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University 2012 / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Reverse engineering (RE) has emerged as an important tool in the design stages of a product. The demand for better performance of hardware and software has spawned many different technologies that fall under RE. The diversity of technologies is linked to the different application areas of industry. It is critical to understand what the exact capability of each individual technology is, in order to choose the appropriate RE system. The objective of this study is to develop capability profiles of different RE technologies available, such as: Coordinate Measuring Machine, Articulated Arm (Cimcore), Non-contact scanner (GOM), and contact scanner (Renishaw). To achieve the objective, the different characteristics of each technology are measured and quantified. A capability profile can be regarded as defined criteria that represent the performance of a RE technology and in this study, is defined by quantifying the following characteristics:  Accuracy  Repeatability  Speed of Measurement  Work Envelope  User-friendliness. The significance of developing these capability profiles is so that they may be compared to one another. This is important, especially for the accuracy criterion, as each technology is manufactured by a different company, making an acceptable accuracy comparison amongst the different technologies impossible. The study also suggests an evaluation tool which will help a decision maker choose the appropriate technology for a specified objective. Guidelines are also given to potential end users of RE technologies on how they should go about acquiring the right system. On a more general level, the study contributes to research in recent trends, in the RE industry in terms of application, hardware, software and the selection of RE systems. By developing these capability profiles, the study aims to contribute to its value in academia, as well as for industry partners and potential RE end-users.

The development of the Internet changed the virtual world in an endless repository of information. Every single day, in an information-society, people change, catch and turn out files in different tools of social network and Web surrounding. We are in front of “The Big Data”, an endless amount of data with invaluable, but hard treating. It doesn’t have some dimension of measure information to be able of extracting from these big Web data repositories. One of the most challenges nowadays on the Internet from the “Big Data” is to identify feelings, anticipating sceneries dealing with falsehood and false profiles social tools, which cause fanfare, upheavals and significant financial losses worldwide in front of our true scene. The cyber intelligence has by objective to look for events and finding information, subtracting dates from the Web. On the other hand, the Information Science, worried with the questions involving recovery, processing, interpretation and presentation of information that has important areas of study capable of being applied in this context hone the collection and treatment processes of large volumes of information (datas). Thus, through this research literature review, documentary and exploratory, the researcher aimed to review the International studies implicating the analysis of large volumes of data on social networking tools in falsehoods detection, investigating applied techniques and technologies and especially their limitations. Based on the identified concepts and areas of Information Science, also (equaly), it’s the scope of this research to show a suggestion of “framework” that is able to detect or indicate falsehoods, specifically, has the ability to detect profiles, false identities and misinformation, rumors, or unreliable information, processing large volumes of data on social networking tools. It was identified with this research, the Information Science can contribute to building skilled frameworks to provide criteria so that users can identify and discern actual content of questionable content, dumped daily on the Web.
