Förmågan att använda betoningsmönster och relationen till expressiv grammatik och fonologi hos barn med typisk språkutveckling / The Ability to Use Stress Patterns and its Relationship to Expressive Grammar and Phonology in Children with Typical Language Development

Freij, Victoria, Åberg, Hanna January 2020 (has links)
Aim: The study aimed to investigate whether there was a relationship between children's prosodic and expressive grammatical abilities and how the ability to use stress patterns in children with typical language development can be described. Method: Twelve children aged 3;7–6;11 with typical language development were recruited to this study. Two materials for assessment were developed, one for examining expressive grammatical and prosodic ability and stress patterns, and one for examining phonology and stress patterns by word and nonword repetition. The children’s grammatical understanding was assessed with “Nya SIT”. In the word and nonword repetition task the use of syllables and the ability to produce consonants and vowels as well as the use of stress patterns were analyzed. In the expressive grammatical-prosodic material, the ability to express the correct proportion of syllables and expressive grammatical ability as well as prosodic stress in respective grammatical constructions were analyzed. Results: There was a weak, non-significant correlation between the ability to produce the correct proportion of syllables in the grammatical-prosodic material and the ability to produce syllables in the word and nonword task. There was a strong, significant correlation between the ability to produce the correct proportion of syllables and expressive grammatical ability. There was also a strong, significant correlation between expressive grammatical ability and the ability to repeat vowels and consonants in words and nonwords. Conclusions: The children expressed both prosodic stress patterns and grammar well and had a very high ability to realize vowels and consonants according to the target utterances. There was no difference in performance that could be attributed to differences in prosodic stress patterns. If a child in this group was good at expressing correct prosodic stress, he/she was also good at expressive grammar, but these abilities were not tested independently. Because of the group’s size, the results cannot be generalized to a larger population.

Respiratory patterns and turn-taking in spontaneous Estonian : Inhalation amplitude in multiparty conversations

Aare, Kätlin January 2015 (has links)
This thesis explores the relationship between inhalation amplitude and turn-taking in spontaneous multiparty conversations held in Estonian. Respiratory activity is recorded with Respiratory Inductance Plethysmography. The main focus is on how inhalation amplitude varies between the inhalations produced directly before turn onset compared to the following inhalations within the same speaking turn. The results indicate a significant difference in amplitude, realised mainly by an increase in inhalation end lung volume values. One of the possible functions of this pattern is to signal an intention of taking the conversational turn. Another could be a phrasing or grouping function connected to lower inhalation amplitudes within turns. / 2014-1072 Andning i samtal (Vetenskapsrådet)

The role of Bible translation in the development of written Zulu: a corpus-based study

Masubelele, Mthikazi Roselina 25 August 2009 (has links)
While translation can be studied with a view to throwing light on a number of aspects in life, in this thesis translation has been researched with a view to outlining the development of written Zulu from its earliest stages, using twelve texts of the Book of Matthew. The Book of Matthew has been chosen in this undertaking because it was the first book of the Bible to be translated into Zulu and was thought to be the most apposite instrument with which the development of written Zulu could be measured. The polysystem theory and the descriptive approach to translation studies are the theoretical models that inform the arguments presented in this study. Polysystem theory sees translated literature as a system operating in the larger social, literary and historical systems of the target culture, while with the descriptive approach translations are regarded as facts of the target culture. Against this premise the focus of this study is mainly on the twelve translations of the Book of Matthew and no comparisons between source and target texts are undertaken here. Corpus-based research provided tools such as WordSmith Tools 3.0 for linguistic analysis. Biblical texts were obtained, scanned and presented in electronic format ready to be analysed. From the findings drawn, written Zulu developed all the way through Bible translation, with some translations revealing slight developments and others showing enormous ones. As the findings of this study reveal, Zulu developed gradually, as evidenced by the change to conjunctive writing which occurred over a considerable period, along with the appropriate representation of Zulu speech sounds and grammar conventions. It could also be established at what point during the development of the language, processes such as consonantalisation and palatalisation were introduced into the written language. It is also clear that words of Greek and Hebrew origin were brought into the Zulu language through Bible translation. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that it is feasible to use corpus-based research for analysis in the indigenous languages of South Africa. / Linguistics / D. Litt. et Phil. (Linguistics)

台灣閩南語新調群分析 / Tone group parsing of Taiwan Southern Min

楊雯婷, Yang, Wen-ting Unknown Date (has links)
The goal of this thesis is to explore the tone sandhi domain, tone group (hereafter, TG), of Taiwan Southern Min of younger generation. A corpus is built and analyzed within the framework of Prosodic Theory, a derived theory from the Phonology-Syntax Interface Theory. In the literature, TG boundary # was marked at the right edge of an XP which is neither an adjunct nor a clitic. However, the TG boundary # of younger generation is marked at the right edges of a maximal XP, an adjunctive XP and an X-head. Moreover, language variation is observed in the TG parsing: the presence of TG boundary # is optional. There are four TG parsings not observed in the literature: (1) V # NP # (2) V # QP # (3) QP # A # (4) AdvP # V #. TG is redefined as a Phonological Phrase which syntactically corresponds to a maximal XP, an adjunct XP, an X-head but not to a clitic XP. The four TG parsings are then analyzed with Rank-Ordering Model of EVAL (ROE), a subtheory within the Optimality Theory domain which particularly addresses language variation. According to ROE, constraints on the right side of critical cut-off line participate in the prediction of variation. Three constraints involving in variation are proposed: Align-R (XP-Fnc, ϕ), ϕ-min and Align-R (X-head, ϕ). Align-R (XP-Fnc, ϕ) distinguishes lexical projection and functional projection, ϕ-min requires a Phonological Phrase to be minimally disyllabic, and Align-R (X-head, ϕ) predicts # to occur at the right edge of an X-head. The analysis centers around the three constraints’ relation with the critical cut-off line. The constraint rankings are: Ident-T-Rϕ | Align-R (XP-Fnc, ϕ) >> ϕ-min >> Align-R (X-head, ϕ) >> *T >> Align-R (XP-Lex, ϕ). Except for the faithfulness constraint Ident-T-Rϕ, the other markedness constraints are arranged at the right side of the cut-off line in order to predict language variation.

Des silences linguistiques à la poétique des silences: l'oeuvre de Stéphane Mallarmé

Miksic, Vanda 19 September 2005 (has links)

Prosodie akcentů ve fonologii masoretské hebrejštiny / Phonology of Masoretic Hebrew II: Accents As Prosody

Hedánek, Jiří January 2017 (has links)
A Dissertation Abstract to Phonology of Masoretic Hebrew II Accents As Prosody Jiří Hedánek řjh (2017) PMH II - Abstract Charles University, Faculty of Arts, Prague 1 Abstract The dissertation Phonology of Masoretic Hebrew: Accents as Prosody (2017) interprets Tiberian 'accents' as speech prosody marking. Traditionally, they are explained as signs for accenting, singing or syntax. But only some were placed on accents. They do not map well to music which has been shaped by local traditions more than the mark-up. Syntactic interpretation is based on dividing marks but many diverse marks link, no links lead outside of verses, some words have two different marks and simple verses often miss stronger dividers. Interpreting them as prosody explains why they gravitated to accent positions; why different musical renditions developed; why they often agree with syntax and sometimes they do not. First a general concept of prosody units is put forward. This is applied to Masoretic Hebrew and the focus turns to intonation. The previous dissertation Phonology of Masoretic Hebrew (2011) analyzed siluq, atnach, segolta, zaqeph, revia (also mugrash, and establishing garsha as a unit), geresh, gershayim, tevir, mercha (also kphula), tiphcha, tarcha and dechi. The 2017 dissertation analyzed (from printed editions, manuscripts...
