Separated by the Child Welfare System: The Journey of One Set of Fraternal Twins

Bond, Jocelyne Coan 01 January 2019 (has links)
This study explored the separation of twins in foster care and examined how their lived experiences relate to their interpersonal relationships as adults. Many researchers have studied the long-term impact of nontwin sibling separation in foster care, but little is known about the separation of twins, leaving a significant gap in existing literature. The purpose of this study was to examine the lived experiences twins who were separated in foster care as relates to their interpersonal relationships during adulthood. A qualitative, narrative approach was used to gather the lived experiences of one set of twins. The research questions examined how one specific set of adult fraternal twin sisters interpreted their personal experiences of being separated from each other while in foster care and whether this experience had an impact on their interpersonal relationships. The study relied on the theoretical foundations of attachment theory and family systems theory to support the use of existing literature and to integrate the research findings into current child welfare practice. Through personal interviews, each twin was asked to recall experiences from foster care and comment on the impact of being separated from their twin. Thematic analysis of the interview data and observations of the interview process helped to identify four themes: forming successful attachments, mental health issues, trauma history, and number and type of placements experienced. To encourage social change these results can inform the child welfare system, add to the body of existing research, and influence future placement decisions regarding twins in foster care.

Barn som far illa i det tysta : En kvalitativ studie om barns uppväxt i sekter samt hur skola och socialtjänst uppmärksammar och arbetar med dessa barn / Children who suffer in silence : A qualitative study of children's upbringing in cults and how school and social services pay attention to and work with these children

Ljungmark, Stella, Svensson, Hanna January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine the meeting between children in cults and personnel in Swedish schools and Child Protective Services (CPS). Furthermore, the study investigates whether children in cults who are being mistreated receive the help and attention they need from school and the CPS. This study has a qualitative research approach. Five semi-structured interviews with former cult members and professionals who have worked with children in cults were conducted. The interviews were supplemented with a content analysis of two autobiographies written by former cult members. The theory chosen was the general systems theory with the aim to use it as a tool to further understand how cults work as a system and how it affects the children in them. The results show that children who live in cults can be exposed to physical and mental abuse. Furthermore, it is difficult for professionals to identify children that have experienced abuse, due to the cults view of and approach to people outside their own community. Lack of knowledge regarding how to recognize these children in cults that have experienced abuse and non-existent training in how to handle said cases is one reason for why many children have been overlooked.

”Tar ni mina barn kommer jag döda er” : En kvalitativ studie om socialsekreterares erfarenheter av hot och våld från klienter / “If you take my children I will kill you” : A qualitative study about social service workers' experience of threats and violence from clients

Karlsson, Moa, Eriksson, Rebecca January 2021 (has links)
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine how social workers experience and understand threats and violence aimed towards them in their profession as well as what factors increase and decrease their motivation to report threats and violence from clients in order to conspire to a better work environment for social workers.   Method: The empirical material of this study was collected through semi-structured interviews  with six social workers within child protective service in Sweden.   Theory: The theories used to analyze the empirical material has been Berger and Luckmanns theory about social construction and Lundgrens theory about the normalization process.   Results: The results showed that all six social workers had experienced threats or violence from clients at some point. Our results also indicate that social workers normalize threats and violence from their clients. The normalization may be a result of the mentality that threats and violence is a part of the job which is present among social workers. Another finding was that the social workers propensity to report threats or violence depended on the relationship to the client. If they had a long and good relationship the propensity to report decreased.

Burn-Out in Child Protective Services Social Workers

Kern, Homer D. (Homer Dale) 08 1900 (has links)
The problem of this study was the investigation of burn-out in child protective services social workers. The purposes of the study were to 1. Estimate certain causes and symptoms of burn-out; 2. Determine certain characteristics of the individual child protective services social workers; 3. Develop profiles of the burned-out and the burning-out workers; 4. Develop profiles for the items on the characteristics instruments which the computation of the data indicates might be important for selecting, training, and managing workers.

D’un système à l’autre : facteurs de risque d’incidence LSJPA chez les jeunes pris en charge en protection de la jeunesse en raison de troubles de comportement

Pineau-Villeneuve, Catherine 08 1900 (has links)
Among children and youth who have been maltreated, several studies point to the elevated risk of developmental problems such as delinquency and justice system involvement. Presenting serious behavioral problems is a sufficient condition to receive child protection services (CPS) in the province of Quebec; this offers the opportunity to focus on this condition and on the role it may play or not in the subsequent risk of Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA) involvement. The primary role of CPS is to end an abusive situation and to prevent its recurrence. However, a better understanding of the risk factors that lead to an YCJA involvement would help to identify and to adapt interventions for those at greatest risk of juvenile delinquency. The aim of this study is to describe the risk of an YCJA event after a first intervention of CPS due to behavioral problems, and to determine the individual and intervention related factors associated with this YCJA involvement. Administrative data from 16 youth centers in the province of Quebec has been used. Thus, all children and adolescents who have had their file closed after a first CPS intervention due to behavioral problems between January 1st 2005 and December, 31st 2009 were observed (N = 6,630). Survival analysis (Kaplan-Meier model) and Cox regression analyzes were performed. The results indicate that youths in the sample present a 39.7% overall risk of YCJA involvement within the 5-year follow-up period. Boys present a higher risk of YCJA involvement than girls, an unsurprising result. It also appears that the risk varies by gender and the presence of co-occurrence of maltreatment at initial report. Individual risk factors seem to have a greater impact on YCJA involvement than those associated with the CPS intervention. Moreover, recurrences of CPS due to behavioral problems but also because of new information related to child’s maltreatment are particularly important since they are strongly associated with future YCJA involvement. Implications for theory, research, and practice are discussed.

Možnosti využití úkolově orientovaného přístupu v praxi OSPOD / Application possibilities of a task centred aprroach in the department of social and legal protection of children practice

Sedláková, Eliška January 2019 (has links)
140 Abstract GOALS: Intention of my diessertation work was to answer the main research question: "What is the utilazation rate of TCA when working with involuntary clients of social workers from CPS in the capital city of Prague and selected CPS in Vysocina region?". Theoretical starting-points: Basic signs of TCA are partnerships and strenghten. In terms of TCA the success depends on How people can actively participate and understand the process of helping. Clients role is active and he is participating everything what has been happening in the whole process of helping. Task centered approach says, that experience from your own decision is more usefull then just assuming how the future situation could be. TCA holds the idea, which just a little success build up self-confidence and self-esteem. Accomplishing of goals and achieving of another goal motivates a client. When smaller goals are set up there is a much more chance for possitive result of the whole advisory process. METHODS: Semistructured questionnaire has been used. The questionnaire have 47 questions, which are based on operationalization of main research question. RESULTS: The outcome of questionnaire investigation method is that the workers don`t use TCA, but in general in their practice we are able to identify some of the elements of approach.
