Inventing the Borzoi : Alfred and Blanche Knopf and the rhetoric of prestige in modern American book publishing, 1915-1929Root, Amy Louise 30 August 2010 (has links)
Signified by an eye-catching wolfhound logo (the borzoi), the Alfred A. Knopf publishing company holds considerable prestige in the American book trade, having released works by twenty-one Nobel Prize winners, forty-nine Pulitzer Prize winners, and twenty-nine National Book Award winners to date. Founded in 1915, the firm developed a reputation for excellence in less than a decade, despite the fact that the husband-and-wife team at the helm—Alfred and Blanche Knopf—were young novices. At once a literary history and an analysis of a unique form of marketing rhetoric, Inventing the Borzoi traces the company’s status to the early acquisition of books written by noteworthy European authors, the use of distinctive design and production elements that gave Borzoi books an artisanal appearance, and marketing messages that touted Alfred Knopf himself as a new arbiter of literary standards for an audience that comprised not only consumers but also literary agents, authors, critics, booksellers, and other members of the trade.
Synthesizing bibliographical research with Kenneth Burke’s theories of rhetoric and identity, this dissertation yields a multi-faceted account of the Knopf company’s first fourteen years, culminating at the cusp of the Great Depression. Burke’s notions of dramatism provide a useful means for exploring the Knopfs’ performance of a distinctive literary role. This study extends Burkean principles to a medium through which much complex language is transmitted—the book-publishing machine—uniting the philosophies of the father of modern rhetorical studies with the early history of a publishing firm whose success was largely built on the mastery of rhetorical strategies. Each chapter in this study concludes with an interpretation of Knopf history as illuminated by the pentad of Burkean dramatism: act, scene, agent, agency, and purpose. The first comprehensive examination of the company’s rapidly achieved stature, this study argues that the Borzoi identity was shaped not only by conventional marketing motivations but also became a consistent extension of the way Alfred and Blanche perceived themselves. / text

Level-Up!

When the Publisher is a Politician; A Case Study of the Idaho Falls Post Register's Coverage of the 2002 Idaho Gubernatorial CampaignBoyle, Kristoffer D. 13 July 2005 (has links)
In March 2002, Idaho Falls Post Register owner/publisher Jerry Brady announced his intent to run as the Democratic challenger in the Idaho gubernatorial race. His decision left the newspaper and its editorial staff scrambling for an appropriate way to objectively cover the state's most prominent race involving the man who signed the checks. In an effort to meet this expectation, the newspaper established a detailed plan, which included Brady moving away from the newspaper's operations, both physically and editorially. Additionally, the Post Register brought in an outside media professional to monitor its coverage of the race and hosted several meetings for readers. While several studies have examined the relationship between politics and journalism, there have not been any significant studies related to a newspaper covering one of its own, which is the focus of this work. Using a case study approach, this study examines the Post Register's plan for covering the gubernatorial race and analyzes whether the paper followed its plan. The study includes a content analysis of the campaign-related articles published by the paper based on five components of objectivity as presented by Mindich (1999). These components include detachment, nonpartisanship, inverted pyramid, facticity, and balance. From this analysis, this study aims to answer the question, "Was the Post Register objective in its coverage of the race?" The study addresses the concept of objectivity and examines three general perspectives of journalistic morality and the viewpoints within those perspectives in an effort to determine which would apply to the Post Register's situation. They include the individualist perspective (autonomy, existentialism), the collectivist perspective (communitarianism), and the dialectic perspective (public journalism). The findings reveal that the Post Register staff stuck to their coverage plan and was objective in its coverage of the race. The author suggests that these two elements are related. In other words, because the Post Register staff adopted a coverage plan and stuck to it, they were able to remain objective. The author concludes that Post Register was not rooted in one specific viewpoint. The editorial staff chose to use public journalism tactics as tools toward maintaining a perceived autonomy. In the process, they most heartily embraced the communitarian belief. In other words, if the readers are happy, we must be doing a good job.

Previous issue date: 2015-09-30 / We understand the language as a process and interaction and literacies as contextualized
processes that comprise the social practices of reading and writing various types of text. We
argue that the school should contribute to the development of this literacy in its daily teaching
practice, taking into account the educational needs of the contemporary world, immersed in a
digital culture. Considering the issue of liability granted to school and to promote a digital
literacy process, we build a problem axis that directed the methodological procedures of this
research: how to favor students of the 5th year of elementary school, at a public school in the
city of Campina Grande, with the viability of digital literacy? From this research question, we
developed a methodology to find a possible answer and / or solution to this question. We
decided to do a qualitative research of applied nature and explanatory type which was designed
as action research. The instruments used for data collection were a questionnaire probing, with
participant observation, video and audio recordings of the meetings and a question made to the
students at the end of the survey. The goal was to use the Publisher software as a pedagogical
tool for making the digital leaflet, with the students of the 5th year of elementary school, at a
public school in Campina Grande, State of Paraiba, and consider whether this action contributed
to enabling the digital literacy of the class. To support the discussion, we sought theoretical
basis of authors such as: Koch (2006) and Travaglia (2008) on language and interaction; Street
(1984, 2014), Kleiman (2005, 2012), Aranha (2008, 2011), Rojo (2012) and Soares (2009,
2012), about literacies; Lévy (1993, 1999) and Xavier on technologies; Braga & Ricarte (2005)
and Palfrey & Gasser (2011), about digital natives and digital literacy. The proposal is not
intended to be a digital revolution in school, or even the substitution of a new literacy for
another, but we seek to promote access to knowledge that would enable the development of
new skills, and, through these, students would have the will and autonomy to perform their
reading and writing skills in digital media in various social contexts, beyond the school
environment. We understand that the proposal contributed to enabling digital literacy, thus
responding to the research question that started this work, proving the hypothesis: "Using the
Publisher software as a pedagogical tool in the making of a digital leaflet enables the digital
literacy process for students of the 5th year of elementary school I". To share this experience
with other educators and people who are interested, we have created a Digital Guide with
guidelines for teachers who wish to make a similar or identical proposal for their courses,
adapting it to the context, providing opportunities for other students to experience the use of a
software application as a pedagogical tool.
A partir dessa
base teórica em autores como: Koch (2006) e Travaglia (2008) sobre linguagem e interação;
Street (1984, 2014), Kleiman (2005, 2012), Aranha (2008, 2011), Rojo (2012) e Soares (2009,

Elsa Fougt, Kungl. boktryckare : Aktör i det litterära systemet ca 1780-1810Rimm, Anna-Maria January 2009 (has links)
Elsa Fougt (1744–1826), a woman entrepreneur, was one of the leading figures in the late eighteenth-century Swedish book trade. Her main enterprise was the printing house Kongl. Tryckeriet (the Royal Printing House), which was responsible for printing and publishing the official documents of the Swedish realm. Besides her office as Royal Printer, she also ran a publishing house, two bookshops and a type foundry, as well as being the editor of the Swedish newspaper Stockholms Weckoblad. The dissertation analyzes Fougt's different enterprises and her position in the book trade between 1780 and 1810, from the perspectives of sociology of literature and gender history. It consists of five independent articles, preceded by an introductory chapter which summarizes the articles and discusses their main findings. The first two articles explore the office of the Royal Printer during the whole eighteenth century, while the third article concerns Elsa Fougt’s position as Royal Printer. The fourth article is a study of Fougt's publishing house, and the fifth and final article focuses on her international bookshop, where, among other things, she sold clandestine books imported from the STN in Switzerland. Fougt's successful career was made possible by a number of favourable circumstances, the most important being her family background and network. Her father Peter Momma held the office of Royal Printer, and Elsa Fougt and her husband Henric inherited his position when he died. When Henric passed away in 1782, Elsa – as a widow – was legally allowed to take up the office of Royal Printer independently. The fact that Elsa Fougt was a woman does not seem to have particularly affected her role as Royal Printer. In comparison with her predecessors, her position as Royal Printer appears to have been rather strong. She was a shrewd businesswoman who successfully negotiated with the authorities for higher financial compensation. Her office was obviously of greater importance than her gender. Being both a publisher, a printer, and a bookseller, Fougt handled most of the functions of the book trade, although she distinguished between these different functions. Furthermore, rather than just being an intermediary of books, she also took part in the creation of them, for example by initiating texts and editing manuscripts. In the book trade of her time, Fougt can be seen as both a traditionalist – holding the inherited office of Royal Printer – and an innovator, representing a more modern literary system with increased specialization.

A COMPARISON OF INTRAFAMILIAL AND EXTRAFAMILIAL SEX OFFENDERS.SCHUR, PETER BARTON. January 1986 (has links)
Intrafamilial and extrafamilial sex offenders receive differential treatment from criminal justice, mental health, and social service agencies. This differential treatment is based on assumptions that intrafamilial offenders are better candidates for successful treatment and that they are less dangerous than extrafamilial offenders. These assumptions are based upon clinical experience and anecdotal reports, but they lack empirical research evidence. The present study attempts to address the need for objective information regarding sex offenders and their offenses. Specifically, it compares a group of intrafamilial offenders with a group of extrafamilial offenders in terms of variables related to treatment prognosis, dangerousness, and psychological characteristics. The results suggest that there is a sound basis for the decisions being made by criminal justice, mental health, and social service agencies. Intrafamilial sex offenders are predominantly regressed offenders who do not have fixed sexual preferences for children and who are thought to be treatable in community-based treatment programs. In contrast, extrafamilial offenders are predominantly fixated offenders who do have fixed sexual preferences for children and who are thought to be particularly difficult, if not impossible, to treat. In addition, intrafamilial offenders appear less dangerous than extrafamilial offenders in that they used less forceful and violent means of coercion in order to gain compliance of their victims. No significant differences were found between groups regarding their psychological characteristics as measured by the MMPI. While the literature has characterized regressed offenders as men who sexually abuse children in the context of situational stress and family dysfunction, no evidence of this was found in the present study. This finding raises a question regarding the definition, understanding, and validity of the concept of the regressed offender. This may be of some importance to evaluators and treatment teams who believe that the treament of choice for the regressed offender involves family therapy and the alleviation of stress-related factors, while they tend to neglect or minimize the possible contribution of the individual psychopathology of the offender.

METABOLISM OF 2,2, - BIS (P-CHLOROPHENYL)-1, 1-DICHLOROETHYLENE (DDE) BY THE BOVINE.MOHAMMAD, KASSIM HASSAN. January 1984 (has links)
Twelve lactating Holstein dairy cows were randomly divided into four groups of three animals each. Group A served as the control, group B was dosed at 0.05ppm/day of DDE (2,2-bis(P-chlorophenyl-1, 1-dichloroethylene), cows in group C were dosed at 0.1ppm DDE/day, while group D cows were dosed at 1.0ppm DDE/day. DDE was administered in a residue free peanut oil solution for 32-consecutive days. Milk samples were taken daily during the 32 day dosing period and for an additional 32 days after the dosing period. Quantitative analysis of DDE residue in milk fat was determined by using a Tracor MT-220 gas chromatograph with a Tritium electron capture detector. The average increase in DDE milk fat concentration during the dosing period was directly related to intake levels. DDE was the only organochlorine compound detected in the milk fat. The general slope and shape of the curves of milk fat DDE levels were similar for all treatments. The levels of DDE increased rapidly after the onset of dosing. After 15 days of dosing and throughout the remaining 17 days of the dosing period, milk fat DDE increased at a relatively slow rate. The level of milk fat DDE declined rapidly as soon as the DDE residue source was withdrawn. At the end of the 32-day post-dosing period, one cow from each group was slaughtered and samples were taken from muscles, brain, lung, lymph, spleen, kidney fat, heart, gonad, placenta, udder, and kidney for DDE analysis. Considerable DDE was found in the muscle, lymph, kidney fat, and udder tissues.

Digitala läromedel i svenskundervisningen : En studie av svensklärares attityder till digital undervisningspraktikBerg, Fredrik January 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to investigate upper secondary school teachers’ perception of publisher produced digital tools within the frame of each teachers’ subject teaching in Swedish. The study questions following the issues: (1) what attitude do teachers have towards publisher produced digital tools within the field of their subject Swedish? (2) Which, if any, expectations from the principal/ school administration do the teachers have of using the publisher produced digital tool in their education? And (3) how is the publisher produced digital tool applied in the education? To answer these questions, semi-structured interviews were conducted with six upper secondary school teachers who, among other subjects, teach Swedish. This study relies on a phenomenographic method and the phenomenon is the publisher produced digital tool. The result shows that the six interviewed teachers use publisher produced digital tools between 10 and 20 percent of their lesson time in subject of Swedish. That low utilization can partially be explained by the teachers’ long tradition of constructing their own teaching materials. Another explanation could be that publisher produced digital tools are relatively new and that the teachers feel uncomfortable using them. The expectations from the principal/school administration about the teachers’ usage of these digital tools in their teaching is relatively low. Whether the usage of publisher produced digital tools is going to increase or not in the future is unknown – it is up to the teachers of Swedish to determine.

Do papel ao digital: como as novas tecnologias desafiam a função do editor de livros de história / From paper to e-book: how the new technologies challenge the history book publisher´s rolePinsky, Luciana 15 March 2013 (has links)
New leading actors are entering the scene, and the publisher, who became preeminent as of the 19th century, faces a challenge to his role. The objective of this research is to study the book publisher\'s role. To this end, it presents the conception of a book along history and its role in society. It makes an attempt to define the contours of the History book and provides a general dimension of the book market in Brazil and in the world. The field work consists of non-oriented interviews with 12 Brazilian and foreign book professionals. The conclusions show that we are currently living in the era of the digital incunables, in which there are some experiments but little certainty as to how the book of the future will be.
