Linear Power Discretization and Nonlinear Formulations for Optimizing Hydropower in a Pumped Storage System

Moore, Craig S. 06 December 2000 (has links)
Operation of a pumped storage system is dictated by the time dependent price of electricity and capacity limitations of the generating plants. This thesis considers the optimization of the Smith Mountain Lake-Leesville Pumped Storage-Hydroelectric facility. The constraints include the upper and lower reservoir capacities, downstream channel capacity and flood stage, in-stream flow needs, efficiency and capacity of the generating and pumping units, storage-release relationships, and permissible fluctuation of the upper reservoir water surface elevation to provide a recreational environment for the lake shore property owners. Two formulations are presented: (1) a nonlinear mixed integer program and (2) a discretized linear mixed integer program. These formulations optimize the operating procedure to generate maximum revenue from the facility. Both formulations are general and are applicable to any pumped storage system. The nonlinear program retains the physical aspects of the system as they are but suffers from non-convexity related issues. The linear formulation uses a discretization scheme to approximate the nonlinear efficiency, pump, turbine, spillway discharge, tailrace elevation-discharge, and storage-elevation relationships. Also, there are binary unit dispatch and either/or constraints accommodating spill and gated release. Both formulations are applied to a simplified scheme of the Smith Mountain Lake and Leesville pumped storage system. The simplified scheme uses a reduced number of generating and pumping units at the upper reservoir to accommodate the software limitations. Various sensitivity analyses were performed to test the formulations. The linear formulation consistently performs better than the nonlinear. The nonlinear solution requires a good starting point for optimization. It is most useful as a verification tool for the solution from the linear program on all occasions. The formulations yield the best schedules for generating and pumping. A coarse time interval limits the use of all pumps in the presence of the spill constraint. A sufficiently large difference in the diurnal unit price encourages short-term pump back as opposed to a weekly cycle. The Leesville (downstream) reservoir affects the power production schedule with its large (approx. 9 ft) forebay rise for every foot drop at the Smith Mountain Lake. The linear formulation provides a valuable tool for studying the system under a wide range of conditions without having to worry about the computational difficulties associated with the nonlinear formulation. / Master of Science

Investigation Of Waterhammer Problems In The Penstocks Of Pumped-storage Power Plants

Dincer, Ali Ersin 01 January 2013 (has links) (PDF)
Waterhammer is an undesirable event, caused by sudden flow changes in a confined pipe system. When it occurs, its consequences can be very costly and even sometimes deadly. In general, it may be encountered in the penstocks of hydropower plants, water transmission lines, water networks, etc. Therefore, the operation guidelines of the hydropower plants should be defined correctly. In this thesis, waterhammer problems in pumped storage hydropower plants are investigated. Time dependent flow conditions in the penstocks are studied by the help of computer software, HAMMER. The software solves nonlinear differential equations by using method of characteristics. Firstly, hydraulic transients for various operational cases are investigated using some scenarios. Then a surge tank, protective device for waterhammer, is added to the system and for the same operational cases, hydraulic transients are studied again. Finally, the results obtained from the operation of the system with and without surge tank are compared. Wind-hydro hybrid systems are also included in the study.

Feasibility Study of Pumped Storage System for Application in Amhara Region, Ethiopia

Tilahun, Mastewal Alemu January 2012 (has links)
In these days environmental issues are critical. Environmental concerns mainly rise from energy productions. Fortunately Ethiopia is trying to use renewable energy sources as a means for electrical power production and it is a great start for a long, tiresome green energy journey. The basic job to be done in green energy sectors is to maximize the capacity of renewable technologies to fulfil the best efficiency.  Intermittent nature of the energy production and their inefficiency to meet peak load demands are the basic problems in renewable energy sectors.   Ethiopia’s electrical power production is mainly dependent on hydropower; according to latest data from EEPCO hydro covers 88% of the total production. There are two major nature of this power plant; since the working medium is water it is mainly dependent on the nature of the seasons and secondly it rarely meets peak load demands. After the erection of the power plant the energy production is not time dependent; it can produce power continuously; but the consumption is time dependent which is defined as peak hours and off-peak hours. There is excess load in time of off-peak hours and scarcity in peak hours. So this work can help to maximize the capacity of the water for production by using technological advancements to produce lot of energy in almost full capacity throughout the year to full fill the need of our country. Tana Beles hydropower plant is the largest hydropower plant which starts to work in May, 2010 with an investment cost of $500 million and capacity of 460 MW. The project is planted in Amhara region using the water source of Lake Tana. To make this large and very necessary renewable energy resource sustainable using energy storage system will be vital. This study will figure out a pumped storage system for the hydropower plant for additional power production and for the sustainability of the water resource.    Pumped storage system is the only viable, large-scale resource that is being broadly utilized today for storing energy, and it offers the best option available for harnessing off-peak generation from renewable sources. The contributions of pumped storage hydro to our nation’s transmission grid by providing stability services, storage capacity needs, and expanding the green job market are considerable today.   The high energy demand of the pump will be considered to be covered using the excess electrical power production during night or weekends and if the resource is available using wind solar PV hybrid systems.   The author will try to assess the technology not only for other mini hydro power plants but also for irrigation and other purposes merely in Amhara region, Ethiopia. The feasibility of the system will be considered technically and economically for the hydropower plant.

[en] PUMPED STORAGE POWER PLANTS: CONSIDERATIONS ON SLOPE STABI-LITY UNDER RAPID DRAWDOWN / [pt] USINAS HIDRELÉTRICAS REVERSÍVEIS: CONSIDERAÇÕES SOBRE REBAIXAMENTO RÁPIDO NA ESTABILIDADE DE TALUDES

18 June 2018 (has links)
[en] Concern about environmental preservation and sustainability, which is increa-singly present in all aspects of life currently, leads to the growth of a search for sources of energy that are clean, renewable and minimally aggressive for the environment. Within this framework, pumped storage power plants - PSPP - return once again as an alternative to energy matrices by producing incomparably cleaner and more rational energy than sources such as thermoelectric, widely used in the regulation of energy consumption peaks. However, due to its peculiar operation, with short and frequent cycles of filling and lowering of the water level of its lakes, the designs of PSPP reservoirs are not entirely covered by the usual Brazilian guidelines for design of hydroelectric plants, lacking appropriate guidance for the treatment of the margins from such reservoirs, whose destabilization can lead to very inconvenient economic and environmental issues. Regardful of this problem, this study presents a summary of the main methods of analysis of stability of slopes subjected to rapid drawdown and identifies the potentialities and limitations of the limit equilibrium methods and numerical methods usually used, especially for the case of PSPP. Slope stabilizations solutions for reservoir banks subjected to rapid drawdowns were presented. The case of the ruptures along the Santa Branca hydroelectric power plant reservoir is presented to illustrate the severity of the problem and has helped to identify the limitations for the effective application of these methods. The conclusion of this study is that feasibility studies and hydropower plant design should be improved in order to include more up-to-date methods of analysis of slope stability under rapid drawdown condition, especially for marginal slopes, which stability conditions the operation of PSPPs, foreseeing the possible introduction of this solution in the Brazilian energy matrix. Finally, this work presents recommendations for the improvement of feasibility studies for the implementation of PSPPs, considering the content of Brazilian guidelines.

Nenusistovėjusio tekėjimo reiškiniai Kruonio HAE reversiniame kanale ir jų modeliavimas / Modeling of fluctuating flow regime in Kruonis pumped storage hydroelectric plant outlet channel

Vaišvila, Andrius 30 May 2012 (has links)
Darbe nagrinėjami nenusistovėjusio vandens tekėjimo reiškiniai, kurie atsiranda Kruonio HAE reversiniame kanale dėl netolygaus hidroagregatų veikimo juos paleidžiant ir stabdant. Tyrimų tikslas - nustatyti nenusistovėjusio tekėjimo dėsningumus Kruonio HAE reversiniame kanale ir jam artimiausioje Kauno marių dalyje. Tyrimų metodas – hidrodinamikos skaitmeninis modeliavimas MIKE21 aplinkoje. Hidrodinamikos modelyje panaudotas reversinio kanalo dugno skaitmeninis reljefo modelis, sudarytas stačiakampių gardelių tinklo (grido) pavidalu pagal naujausius batimetrinių matavimų rezultatus. Elementarių gardelių matmenys 5x5 m. Modelio pakraštinėms sąlygoms aprašyti pasirenkamos laiko funkcijos, kurios išreiškia kiekvieno HAE hidroagregato vandens debito kitimą laiko atžvilgiu įvairių modeliuojamų HAE darbo režimų scenarijuose. Kitoje modelio atviroje riboje nustatomas fiksuotas Kauno marių vandens lygis. Research purpose: to determine the patterns of fluctuations in the water flow regime that occur in the outlet channel of the Kruonis Pumped Storage Plant and the nearest part of Kaunas Lagoon. Research method: numerical modeling of hydrodynamics in the MIKE21 environment. A digital terrain model of the reverse channel bottom consisting of a rectangular grid network (grid), made following the latest bathymetric measurements, was used for the hydrodynamic model. The elementary grid cell dimentions in the model were 5x5 m. To describe the boundary conditions of the model, time functions which express the water flow rate changes over time of each hydrounit in different operating modes of the KPSP were chosen. The fixed Kaunas Reservoir water level was set in the model as the other open boundary. The results of the hydrodynamic modeling were output and recorded at each computational time step and their analysis was performed using MIKE21 software package tools. To evaluate the accuracy and reliability of the hydrodynamic simulation results, a verification of the model was performed, which used the results of visual monitoring of actually measured water level dynamics and flow vector field directions . Analyzing the findings of simulation, consistent patterns of the... [to full text]

Market Requirements for Pumped Storage Profitability : Expected Costs and Modelled Price Arbitrage Revenues, Including a Case Study of Juktan

Salevid, Karin January 2013 (has links)
The rapid integration of intermittent renewable energy sources (IRES) has caused a growing demand for power system flexibility on energy markets all over Europe. Being the only commercially proven large scale energy storage technology, pumped storage hydro power (PSHP) has by several studies been suggested as an efficient solution to mitigate the impact of IRES. However, despite the perceived technical demand profitability remains as a major obstacle for PSHP development. In this study, a market requirement for PSHP profitability, defined in terms of price volatility, is presented. Considering capital and operational expenditures as well as modelled potential price arbitrage revenues for a greenfield PSHP plant, it may be used as a tool for initial assessments of PSHP profitability in relation to market outlooks or modelled future prices. The results have further been used in a case study, where the price volatility required to motivate a restoration of the now decommissioned Swedish PSHP plant Juktan has been determined. The results show that the high capital expenditures characterising PSHP development do comprise in a high risk for developers; while feasibility depends on the sustainment of a highly volatile price climate during several decades, energy markets are often extremely uncertain.

Abstract: This work has for objective to supply larger subsidies the head office Brazilian energetics, in what he/she refers to the planning, retrofitting, operation and control of the systems of electric power generation, in way to provide more effective optimization means, reducing the impacts of natural and economical resources disputed by the electric system of generation and transmission. The use of techniques of adjustable speed has already been used with success in several cases, so much at national level, as for international level. The generation through eolic systems is the strongest example in this sense, overcoming the planning expectations in several cases. The eolic systems can only operate through techniques of adjustable rotation. However, the use of the techniques of adjustable speed, has a lot to contribute, by the due considerations in the most several segments of generation of energy. Any that is the case, is possible of obtaining won considerable, in what it refers the optimization of the energy uses. Inside of this context, the work presents a general panorama of the alternatives of electric power generation, and the possible impacts that the system of adjustable speed can make available in each one of these cases. Initially general aspects of the conventional systems are approached, in way to establish comparison parameters. To proceed, specific aspects of generation for means hydraulic, thermal, eolics are approached. An analysis regarding isolated systems of generation is also presented, joining additional advantages no evidenced in the interlinked systems. This way, it is waited that taking into account these techniques of adjustable rotation, they can lead to relative investments of expansion, it reforms and operation of the system in a more rational way, minimizing environmental and social impacts, still counted with won of efficiency made available. / Mestrado / Recursos Hidricos / Mestre em Engenharia Civil
