Žieminių rapsų atsparumą šalčiui lemiančių veiksnių tyrimas in vitro / The reasearch of factors determining winter rapeseed resistance to freezing in vitro

Šalugienė, Aura 09 June 2010 (has links)
Winter rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) is one of the most important crops in Lithuania. Winter hardiness is a complex trait limiting cultivation of winter rapeseed to the regions of temperate climate. Cold resistance of four winter rapeseed cultivars in vitro and their ability to recover after de-acclimation and re-acclimation periods were investigated at the Laboratory of Agrobiotechnology of Lithuanian University of Agriculture. Shoots were acclimated at 4 °C for 14 days and transferred to freezing temperatures. For study influence of de-acclimation period on rapeseed cold resistance acclimated shoots were de-acclimated and subjected to freezing temperature with and without repeated acclimation. A significant decrease in frost resistance of shoots after 14 days de-acclimation period for all tested cultivars has been obtained. Repeated acclimation followed after de-acclimation period resulted increasing the shoot ability to cold re-acclimation. Cultivars ‘Banjo’ and ‘Valesca’ showed highest value of un-injured shoots under freezing treatment among tested winter rapeseed genotypes. Exogenous sucrose has positive effect on winter rapeseed cold resistance, but repeated acclimation is more important for shoot recovery after de-acclimation.

Vision om en Återbruksby i Växjö / Vision of a Re-use center in Växjö

Lindell, Johan, Muratovic, Armin, Lögdahl, Per-David January 2013 (has links)

Hållbar utveckling för framtiden : En studie om återvinning och återanvändning i förskolan ur ett ekologiskt perspektiv / Sustainable development for the future : A study on recycling and re-use in preschool from an ecological perspective

Oxelstedt, Jessica January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this study is to investigate preschools work with recycling and re-use of different materials, so that children's thoughts on sustainable development is added early in life. The aim is also to examine if and how the children are involved in the environmental work. Through research in this matter it has been concluded that it is important to begin to work for a sustainable development already in preschool. The method used to answer the questions was web surveys. They were sent out to a number of preschools in Gothenburg. The results show that most preschools in the investigation recycle and re-use many different materials. Half of them recycle daily which means that the work with recycling is well anchored in these preschools. The remaining preschools work with these environmental issues sporadically which is not sufficient to provide the basis for a sustainable development. Children are involved in the environmental work in some ways but it seems to be difficult for teachers to show how this is done. The result shows that it is mostly the pedagogues who are working with re-use and recycling. The way the children are involved is by sorting out household waste and working with different kinds of creative activities with re-used materials. Possible obstacles mentioned by the respondents to work with recycling/re-use in preschools were children's age, time and distance, the attitudes of the pedagogues and their approach.

From metaphors to intelligent patterns : milestones on the road to code re-use / Robert Lemke

Lemke, Robert William January 2007 (has links)
Computer applications can be described as largely rigid structures within which an information seeker must navigate in search of information - each screen, each transaction having underlying unique code. The larger the application, the higher the number of lines of code and the larger the size of the application executable. This study suggests an alternative pattern based approach, an approach driven by the information seeker. This alternative approach makes use of value embedded in intelligent patterns to assemble rules and logic constituents, numerous patterns aggregating to form a "virtual screen" based on the need of the information seeker. Once the information need is satisfied, the atomic rules and logic constituents dissipate and return to a base state. These same constituents are available, are reassembled and form the succeeding "virtual screen" to satisfy the following request. Metaphors are used to introduce current information solutions, where events are initiated and driven by physical constructs built using monolithic instruction sets. The metaphor approach is then expanded, illustrating how metaphors can be used to communicate an understanding between two likeminded intellects - this illustrates how spatial artifacts are used to carry intellectual value across the intellectual divide, from the one (intellectual source) to the other (intellectual target). At this point, the pattern based concept is introduced. This is where value, an intellectual appreciation hidden within spatiality, can be exploited towards the delivery of information. The pattern based approach makes use of multiple pattern "instances" to deliver functionality - each pattern instance has a specific embedded value. Numbers of these patterns aggregate to drive the formation of a "virtual screen" built using patterns, each pattern referencing and associating (physical) atomic logic and spatial constituents. This is analogous to painting a picture using removable dots. The dots can be used to describe a fish, and then, once appreciation has been completed, the image is destroyed and the dots are returned to the palette. These same dots can later be reapplied to present the picture of a dog, if that is requested by the information seeker. In both pictures the same "dots" are applied and reused. The form of the fish and dog are retained as value embedded within the patterns, the dots are building blocks aligned using instructions within the patterns. This study classifies existing application solutions as belonging to the Artifact-Pattern-Artifact (APA) group, and the pattern based approach belonging to the Pattern-Artifact-Pattern (PAP) group. An overview and the characteristics of each are presented. The document concludes by presenting the results obtained when using a prototype developed using the PAP approach. / Thesis (M.Sc. How can performance act historiographically? : enacting the New York avant-gardes of 1960s and early 1970s

Field, Andrew Thomas January 2012 (has links)
This thesis is concerned with extending the role that live performance might play in our understanding of the work of the interrelated avant-garde performance communities that emerged in New York in the 1960s and early 1970s. This is a practice-led project that uses my own performance work as the site of its enquiry. In the last decade performance itself has begun to play a significant role in our understanding of and relationship to past performances, in the main through the increasing pervasion of re-enactment as an acknowledged historiographical trope. However, as a consequence of its association with re-enactment, the nature of the historiographical role afforded to performance is still primarily determined by its proximity to the archive and institutionalised modes of performance history. Challenging the primacy of the re-enactment as a means of embodied engagement with past performance, this research project explores how manipulation of my own performance practice might generate new forms of historical knowledge. In particular my focus is on using this practice to develop a new understanding of how the work of this earlier period altered y the experience of the urban landscape for those participating in the work, audience and performers alike. Structured around a rigorous analysis of three specific works from across this earlier period, I conceived a series of spatial ‘blueprints’ that were applied to my practice to create three new performance pieces. Using my own research and practice to renegotiate the relationship between live performance and the archive, I demonstrate the possibility for a new historiographical approach to past performance. This approach emphasises the role of the participants in the performance as generators of an alternative form of historical understanding embedded in ways of operating in the city.

Evaluating the long-term sustainability of the ENCOURAGE (ENhancing primary care COUnseling and Referrals to community-based physical Activity opportunities for sustained lifestyle chanGE) project utilizing methods to determine external validity

Chapman, Soyun 15 February 2017 (has links)
Primary care based physical activity interventions have been shown to be efficacious when delivered under controlled research conditions, over the short-term. However, few studies have evaluated the long-term sustainability of these health interventions utilizing methods to determine external validity. Our own research group conducted the ENCOURAGE project, which enabled previously sedentary individuals (Age, 51 ± 1 years; BMI, 35.2 ± 0.8) to increase their total physical activity by 104 minutes a week. Although the ENCOURAGE project has now ended, a number of stakeholders are utilizing project outcomes to inform best practice within their respective organizations. The purpose of this thesis project was to use the RE-AIM framework to evaluate the external validity of the ENCOURAGE project, and to describe the stakeholders’ perceptions regarding the long-term sustainability of the project utilizing methods from a stakeholder analysis assessment. Results from the RE-AIM evaluation suggest that three of the five dimensions of the framework were met, notably: Reach, Adoption and Implementation. Therefore, the ENCOURAGE project generated a moderate level of public health impact. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight key stakeholders who were involved with the design, development or implementation of the project. Although the ENCOURAGE project was not adopted into the health care system, it left notable implications on the recognition of physical activity in primary care, and the delivery of physical activity services in primary care. Furthermore, the project was able to influence the primary care providers’ perceptions about physical activity, community-based programing and health policy. These positive changes observed at the individual, organizational and system-level are sustainable over the long-term. / February 2017

An empirical examination of the impact of JROTC participation on enlistment, retention and attrition

Days, Janet H., Ang, Yee Ling 12 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release; distribution in unlimited. / Our primary research interest is whether participation in the Junior Reserve Offices Training Corps (JROTC) program influences youths' propensity to enlist; and for those who subsequently enlist, the influence on retention rates and propensity to reenlist. The novelty of this thesis lies in conducting multivariate analysis of the impact of JROTC participation on enlistment, retention and reenlistment. Our data sources are (1) the 1980 High School and Beyond (HS & B) survey and (2) Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) enlisted personnel cohort files from Fiscal Year (FY) 1980 to 2000. We employ a number of econometric models with the HS & B data, including single equation PROBIT and LOGIT models, two-stage least squares (2SLS) with instrumental variables (IVs) and bivariate PROBIT equation. Our results show that JROTC positively influence enlistment when we treat JROTC participation as exogenous for both high school seniors and sophomores. The impact of JROTC participation on military enlistment decisions becomes negligible however, when we account for self-selection into the JROTC program of high school students. Using PROBIT and LOGIT models on the DMDC data, we find that enlisted personnel who graduated from JROTC are more likely to reenlist than non-JROTC graduates. Using the Cox proportional hazard survival analysis method, we find that JROTC graduates personnel tend to stay longer and complete their first-term than non-JROTC graduates. Synthesizing the results, we conclude that policy-makers might find it worthwhile to actively target JROTC cadets for enlistment because in the long run, it pays off in terms of higher first-term completion rates which results in cost savings in the form of enlistment bonuses and training costs. One possible extension of our study is to monetize our results for a cost-benefit analysis of the JROTC program vis--̉vis other recruitment programs. Quantifying the net benefits and costs of the JROTC program will allow policy-makers to make more informed decisions with regard to the future direction of the JROTC program. / Lieutenant, United States Navy / Civilian, Ministry of Defense Singapore
