Fast Algorithms For Fragment Based Completion In Images Of Natural Scenes

Borikar, Siddharth Rajkumar 01 January 2004 (has links)
Textures are used widely in computer graphics to represent fine visual details and produce realistic looking images. Often it is necessary to remove some foreground object from the scene. Removal of the portion creates one or more holes in the texture image. These holes need to be filled to complete the image. Various methods like clone brush strokes and compositing processes are used to carry out this completion. User skill is required in such methods. Texture synthesis can also be used to complete regions where the texture is stationary or structured. Reconstructing methods can be used to fill in large-scale missing regions by interpolation. Inpainting is suitable for relatively small, smooth and non-textured regions. A number of other approaches focus on the edge and contour completion aspect of the problem. In this thesis we present a novel approach for addressing this image completion problem. Our approach focuses on image based completion, with no knowledge of the underlying scene. In natural images there is a strong horizontal orientation of texture/color distribution. We exploit this fact in our proposed algorithm to fill in missing regions from natural images. We follow the principle of figural familiarity and use the image as our training set to complete the image.

Optimizing Realistic 3D Facial Models for VR Avatars through Mesh Simplification / Optimering av realistiska 3D-ansiktsmodeller för VR-avatarer genom nätverksförenkling

Liu, Beiqian January 2023 (has links)
The use of realistic 3D avatars in Virtual Reality (VR) has gained significant traction in applications such as telecommunication and gaming, offering immersive experiences and face-to-face interactions. However, standalone VR devices often face limitations in computational resources and real-time rendering requirements, necessitating the optimization of 3D models through mesh simplification to enhance performance and ensure a smooth user experience. This thesis presents a pipeline that utilizes a Convolutional Neural Network to reconstruct realistic 3D human facial models in a static form from single RGB head images. The reconstructed models are then subjected to the Quadric Error Metrics simplification algorithm, enabling different levels of simplification to be achieved. An evaluation was conducted, utilizing 30 photos from the NoW dataset, to examine the trade-offs associated with employing mesh simplification on the generated facial models within the VR environment. The evaluation results demonstrate that reducing the polygon count improves frame rates and reduces GPU usage in VR, thereby enhancing overall performance. However, this improvement comes at the cost of increased simplification execution time and geometric errors, and decreased perceptual quality. This research contributes to the understanding of mesh simplification’s impact on human facial models within the VR context, providing insights into balancing model complexity and real-time rendering performance, particularly in resource-constrained environments such as mobile devices or cloud-based applications, as well as for models located farther away from the cameras.

Efficient and realistic character animation through analytical physics-based skin deformation

Bian, S., Deng, Z., Chaudhry, E., You, L., Yang, X., Guo, L., Ugail, Hassan, Jin, X., Xiao, Z., Zhang, J.J. 20 March 2022 (has links)
Yes / Physics-based skin deformation methods can greatly improve the realism of character animation, but require non-trivial training, intensive manual intervention, and heavy numerical calculations. Due to these limitations, it is generally time-consuming to implement them, and difficult to achieve a high runtime efficiency. In order to tackle the above limitations caused by numerical calculations of physics-based skin deformation, we propose a simple and efficient analytical approach for physics-based skin deformations. Specifically, we (1) employ Fourier series to convert 3D mesh models into continuous parametric representations through a conversion algorithm, which largely reduces data size and computing time but still keeps high realism, (2) introduce a partial differential equation (PDE)-based skin deformation model and successfully obtain the first analytical solution to physics-based skin deformations which overcomes the limitations of numerical calculations. Our approach is easy to use, highly efficient, and capable to create physically realistic skin deformations. / This research is supported by the PDE-GIR project which has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie grant agreement (No.778035), the National Natural Science Foundation of China (Grant No.51475394), and Innovate UK (Knowledge Transfer Partnerships KTP.010860). Är du en av oss? : -En kvalitativ studie om organisationskulturens påverkan på rekrytering / Are you one of us? : -A qualitative research about how organizational culture affects recruitment

Fritsch, Lisa, Yderberg, Joel January 2016 (has links)
Purpose: The purpose is to present advantages and disadvantages of how organizational culture affects the recruitment in organizations that are incused by organizational culture, and how an organization decides which individual that fits the organization. We intend to describe certain ventures, possibilities and limitations with these methods for both organization and individual. Methodology: A more case study has been applied on five organizations within the private sector as a research design, with an inductive approach. A qualitative method has been used where semi-structured interviews have been implemented from where data has been established. Conclusion: Organizational culture incused the recruitment by what they were looking for in an applicant rather than how it affected the recruitment process. To find the right applicant a realistic organizational presentation was prominent together with how the interview was designed. The organization recruited applicants after their values, which were presented by the organization and discussed during the interviews. The advantages were reduced risk of misinterpretation by applicants along with a greater possibility of choice and a tool for organizations to reduce too high expectations on employment. The disadvantages were more elements to examine while the process became resource demanding, while several conditions had to be fulfilled. If the right conditions couldn’t be obtained the risk was a resource demanding recruiting with an unforeseen result.

An analysis of results of a high-resolution world ocean circulation model

Barton, Wesley A. 03 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited / Results of a highly vectorized and multitasked model of the world ocean circulation were analyzed. This model which uses realistic physics, geometry, and forcing on a high-resolution grid, was run on the NCAR Cray X-MP/48 using a robust-diagnostic strategy. Twenty years of model integration using one-half degree horizontal resolution and 20 levels of vertical resolution were accomplished after 200 wall-clock hours at a maximum FORTRAN performance speed of 450 megaflops. Seven key regions of the world ocean were analyzed using an ocean model processor. A representation of the global ocean circulation emerged that compared well with observations and that included strong advective features, fronts, and subtropical meanders. A diagnostic analysis program was developed to analyze meridional heat and volume transports. The results in all basins appear to be reasonable when compared to the results of other studies. For example, an anomalous northward heat transport of 3.8 x 10 to the 14th power W at 30 deg in the South Atlantic compares favorably with the estimate of 4.2 x 10 to the 14th power W at 32 deg S by Bennett (1978) using hydrographic data. The results of simulations conducted in this study can be compared and contrasted against the results of future eddy-resolving simulations. Teaching and learning linear programming in a grade ii multilingual mathematics class of English language learners: exploring the deliberate use of learners home language

Nkambule, Thulisile 08 July 2009 (has links)
This study investigated the deliberate use of learners‟ home languages in the teaching and learning of linear programming. The study involved a Grade 11 teacher and his Grade 11 multilingual learners in a township school in the East Rand. Data was collected through lesson observations for five consecutive days, reflective interview with teacher and clinical interview with two learners. Analysis of data revealed that the teacher used learners‟ home languages to probe learners‟ understanding of specific terms frequently used in linear programming concepts, for example terms such as, „at least‟ and „at most‟. Learners‟ responses suggest that they drew on their home languages for the meaning of these words. Learners explained the term „at least‟ in their home languages as „buncinci‟ in Isixhosa, „bonnyane‟ in Sesotho and Sepedi and „okungenani‟ in IsiZulu. Learners also used mathematical English term minimum to explain „at least‟ and maximum to explain „at most‟.

Citizen Perceptions of Law Enforcement Shootings Involving Imitation Firearms

Gregory, Kristine Angela 01 January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this qualitative ethnographic study was to explore citizen perceptions of the phenomenon of law enforcement shootings involving an imitation firearm. A secondary purpose was to document knowledge of current imitation firearm policies and thoughts on the effectiveness of said policies. Kingdon's multiple streams approach was used as the theoretical framework. This theory addressed the sources of power that influence policy decisions, the stakeholders involved in agenda setting, and factors that shape policy debates. Data were collected using a combination of secondary data analysis, field observations and semi structured, face-to-face interviews with 23 citizens. Sampling strategies included a combination of snowball, purposeful, and variation sampling to identify interviewees from four specific subject groups: law enforcement, parents of children aged 10-17-years-old, citizens with no law enforcement experience and no children aged 10-17-years-old, and leaders in the community. Results from domain and taxonomic coding revealed the themes of safety, responsibility, and accountability. Specifically, subjects wanted to ensure both law enforcement and citizens were safe in the community, they wanted to see parents take responsibility for their children, and they wanted to see legislation that held people accountable for their actions when using imitation firearms during the commission of a crime. Findings may be used for positive social change by enhancing imitation firearm policies, recognizing ways to improve data tracking, and identifying educational opportunities for both citizens and law enforcement. Enhanced firearm policies can also help mitigate unnecessary shootings and reduce community conflicts between citizens and police.

A estética realista dos filmes sobre favela no Brasil (2002-2010) / Realistic esthetics of films about slums in Brazil (2002-2010)

Saulo Magalhães Resende 06 December 2012 (has links)
This work has as objective the analysis of five contemporary Brazilian cinema films that deal with slum: Cidade de Deus (Fernando Meirelles, 2002), Linha de Passe (Walter Salles and Daniela Thomas, 2008), Sonhos Roubados (Sandra Werneck, 2009), Tropa de Elite (José Padilha, 2007) and Tropa de Elite II (José Padilha, 2010). Taking as its central axis aesthetics realistic of films about slums in Brazil, based on the methodology of film analysis, we performed a short review of some theories of culture, communication and background of the field of contemporary Brazilian cinema. In addition, a dialogic proposal was developed with the Social Psychology and the possibilities of dialogues with Brazilian cinema. The focus was in problematize as production conditions, representations and appropriations reception articulate the various discursive and non-discursive practices and are associated with the representation of the notion of identity categories such as violence, public safety, family, youth and consumption. The results of this qualitative analysis revolved around issues of socio-economic order, while featuring the slum area of (im)possibilities and above all have their residents as characters who have a stereotype than it is to live in the slum, giving visibility in relations settling in these territories.
