This dissertation focuses on the trajectory of Pedro Montenegro. Born in Spain in 1663, he served at the General Hospital of Madrid where he accomplished his technical training. Years later, he immigrated to America , where, in 1691, became involved in the Company of Jesus, and even as a religious, continued to perform crafts involving the healing arts, both in Córdoba, and in the Apostles and Martyrs missions, where he died in 1728. In order to reconstitute his trajectory, we used the documentation of institutions that were part of his life, such as the Hospital of Madrid, Protomedicato and the Company of Jesus. The authorship of Materia Medica Misionera written in 1710 is attributed to the Jesuit brother Montenegro, a work considered to be one of the main treaties of medical botany of the colonial period. The analysis of the work enabled us to discuss aspects concerning the authorship and its preparation process and also to identify and evaluate the appropriations that its author did of European conceptions of medicine as well as the resulting reinterpretation obtained by the contact with the indigenous people and experiences that he made with the Native American medicinal plants.

The reference in the architectural and urban project creation : identification of a frame of reference in the teaching practices of the French ENSA (Bordeaux, Saint-Étienne, Paris-Belleville)

Tixier, Marine 01 July 2017 (has links)
This research goes along a will of architectural and urban training scheme reading in French schools, such on didactics than teaching skills. It about to identify the main teaching flows across the ENSA. In order to do this, we base on modern references as identifying tools, cross-elements of all teaching projects. We suppose an inherent link between references, reference-reinterpretation forms and frame of reference building. In order to confirm our hypothesis we have tried to understand greats teaching historic periods, structure of our actual model. Then, we have followed during a semester 6 project studios from Bordeaux, Saint-Étienne and Paris Belleville ENSA, each committed by a form of reference reinterpretation. If the reference appears correctly, an identifying tool peculiar to the architectural project, and that multiple forms of reinterpretation are identifiable (formal, constructive, methodological and moral), it is no longer possible to identify frames of reference teaching schemes. Didactics and teaching skills formerly building the frame of reference are nowadays multiple. Furthermore, circumstances concept incorporates the student into his own learning process. If we do not talk about teaching frame of reference anymore, we will use the term of skill frames of reference in order to identify interdisciplinarities. This identification is directed at both teachers and students, in order to get into position their practices, but also to make students reach a better understanding of the teaching goals they receive. This research intends to re-establish a dialogue between the project participants.

Vanessa Rodrigues Nonis 21 October 2011 (has links)
Teufelsmühle and omnibus are nomenclatures used to designate structural models deeply similar, which involve chromaticism, polyphony, modulation, minor thirds relation, symmetrical inversion, voice leading, and enharmonic reinterpretations of chords. They refer to patterns originated at least with the musical practice of the eighteenth century, and that even in that time started to be codified by theorists. Nevertheless, these chromatic sequences were studied specifically only beginning at the end of the 1960s and done by two main streams of research, the German, which uses the term Teufelsmühle, and the American, with the designation omnibus. Divided in two parts, this study presents initially structural aspects that refer to Teufelsmühle and omnibus based on a literature review and critical comments developed in this research. The second part intends to look at the relevance of these chromatic models and what they encompass in the compositional process of Chopin, showing the way such principle was used and the main contexts in which it happens.

An analysis of secondary control beliefs and physical and psychological well-being in older individuals

Swift, Audrey U A A 14 January 2011 (has links)
Researchers have struggled to define how to age well since the time of Roman philosopher Cicero in 44 BC, yet today it remains a mystery (Tate, Lah, & Cuddy, 2003). In the context of dealing with age-related declines that often accompany later life, it has recently been suggested that positive reinterpretation, a concept implicit to positive psychology, may be important (Ouwehand, de Ridder, & Bensing, 2007; Seligman & Csikszentmihalyi, 2000). Positive reinterpretation has at times been referred to as “secondary control” in the psychological literature. In their seminal article of 1982, Rothbaum, Weisz, and Snyder theorized that there were multiple ways in which people could positively reinterpret outcomes and gain feelings of secondary control, including believing in the power of others and nature, as well as downgrading importance. These belief patterns become especially important in later life, when faced with age-related challenges. In the present study, secondary control beliefs were examined cross-sectionally in 2003 (n = 223) and prospectively in 2006 (n = 117) in a sample of older adults (M age = 85 years, 62% women) using a variety of outcome measures including severity of chronic conditions score, recent health, self-rated health, positive emotion, life satisfaction, and perceived stress. The unique contributions of this study are twofold. First, the findings suggest that some older adults may emphasize certain secondary control beliefs in combination. Second, the combined beliefs were found to relate cross-sectionally to measures of physical and psychological well-being. These exploratory findings have important implications in applied and theoretical contexts. In applied contexts, they may help to enhance physical and psychological well-being in the very old. In theoretical contexts, they extend contemporary thinking on secondary control.
