My community, my conscience and guide : communial influence on individual choices in Africa, with special reference to Zulu Proverbs

Manci, Thembayona Paulus Emmanuel 11 1900 (has links)
Life is the common denominator for all beings. Unless individuals are taught to be careful about how they deal with it, great harm could be caused to the whole ontological order. Life therefore is a public property for which precepts had to be established to guard against any misuse. This guarantees that life and its processes are used to everyone's advantage. The Community has put itself in position as the monitor of the processes of life. To it belongs the right to distribute, regulate and even withdraw life as different situations would warrant. The community is both the promulgator and the judge over vital matters. The individuals are taught to be conscientious in dealing with life. In making choices the individuals have to be conscious of the historical experiences of the community and be disposed to being influenced by it. Hence the Community becomes the Conscience and Guide. / Religious Studies and Arabic / M.Th. (Religious Studies)

Turismo religioso, romarias e festas de Frei Damião no Nordeste brasileiro

Nadjairo Francisco Chaves 16 June 2014 (has links)
This dissertation aims to understand the prospects of progress that the process of beatification and canonization of Frei Damião can bring to the growth of religious tourism in Pernambuco, having been the focus for pilgrimages and festivals that exist in his honor. It initially is made on a general approach of pilgrimages and religious tourism with focus on overlapping between them, and also point to its historical roots to enter on the question of religious tourism in Brazil. Then we turn our attention to the figure of Frei Damião of Bozzano where strolled briefly through the history of the formation of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin in Brazil and we enter the life path of Frei Damião in northeastern Brazil , through its missions, and disease death and the process of beatification and canonization. After this step, we proceed to address their pilgrimages and festivals held in honor of Fr Damian to the Brazilian Northeast, with a view to religious tourism and marketing opportunities, and finally, treat existing challenges for the growth of religious tourism in Pernambuco, having focus is on the information received during the interviews conducted by the Guardian of the Convent of St. Felix of Cantalice and Unit Manager of destinations and tourism products of EMPETUR. For this, the methodology used was the literature and documents, for the composition of our theoretical and field research, conducted through interviews, on which one can conclude that the figure of Frei Damião has a great representative for the people northeastern, which considers it a holy symbol of faith and devotion and whose displacements that occur as a result of their festivals and celebrations can be pointed out as an important asset for the growth of religious tourism in the Northeast.

Lotus Pond, Bicultural Ripples: The Psychological Orientations of Korean-Canadian Practitioners of Buddhism

Choi, Glen S. January 2014 (has links)
This dissertation examines whether Buddhist beliefs and practices serve to reinforce and/or promote a Korean and/or Canadian cultural prism for next-generation Korean Buddhist practitioners in Toronto, Canada. I define Korean and Canadian cultural prisms based on the cross-cultural psychological framework of Individualism-Relational Collectivism (I-RC) and Analytical-Holistic (A-H) cognition. The aim of my research is to problematize culture in the construction of religious meaning and behaviour for relatively bicultural individuals. My research question can thus be summarized as follows: How is religious meaning and behaviour culturally constructed by next-generation Korean Buddhist practitioners in Canada? What role do individual cultural orientations and the different Buddhist cultural traditions play in this cultural construction and how does Buddhism compare to the other religions (namely Protestantism) practiced by younger-generation Korean-Canadians in this regard? By answering these questions, I ultimately hope to show whether the meaning system of Korean culture is preserved through religion among the younger generation of Korean Buddhist practitioners. I hypothesize that, due to the relatively non-authoritarian nature of Buddhism, the light of Buddhist beliefs and practices will predominantly be refracted through the a priori cultural prism of the individual in question, and the role of Buddhist doctrine and institutions in promoting a particular orientation (individualistic/relationally collectivistic and analytic/holistic) will be minimal and subordinate to the individual. The particular cultural orientation of this prism will, in turn, be dependent upon individual levels of monoculturalism (Korean or Canadian) or biculturalism (Korean and Canadian). In this way, Buddhism may serve to both preserve and undermine the Korean cultural meaning system. By comparison, I hypothesize that the relatively authoritarian nature of (Protestant) Christianity will likely encourage younger-generation Korean Christians to relate to their religion in a predominantly uniform way, regardless of the individual’s cultural orientation.

Mission and habitus : the concept of Bourdieu's habitus and its merit to mission anthropology and praxis of Paul G. Hiebert = Mission und Habitus : Bourdieus Konzept des Habitus und sein Ertrag für die Missionsanthropologie und -praxis von Paul G. Hiebert / Mission und Habitus : Bourdieus Konzept des Habitus und sein Ertrag für die Missionsanthropologie und -praxis von Paul G. Hiebert

Wagner, Björn-Lars 06 January 2015 (has links)
Summary in German and English / This thesis aims at the integration of the concept of habitus, as introduced by Pierre Bourdieu, with the concept of worldview as defined by Paul G. Hiebert develop implications for the missiological discipline and the analysis of the human condition. In a first step the concept of worldview is introduced and integrated into the anthropological discipline from within the life and work of Paul G. Hiebert. The confinement of the concept within the cognitive realm is worked out subsequently and the necessity of a complimentary concept is underlined. In a second step the concept of habitus as defined by Pierre Bourdieu is introduced and explained within his biography, research tradition and his sociological framework. In the concluding chapter a synthesis is provided to integrate habitus with worldview building upon the complimentary nature of the concepts. The cognitive bias of worldview is amended through the incorporated nature of habitus. This leads to an augmented research methodology which includes practical analysis of habitus. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / M.Th. A gender-critical approach to the Pauline material and the Zimbabwean context with specific reference to the position and role of women in selected denominations

Townshend, Patricia Olwyn 02 1900 (has links)
In this work I have used Pierre Bourdieu's concept of habitus as a springboard to examine the Pauline tradition in the light of Zimbabwe-African, cultural, legal and social attitudes to women. I have highlighted the conflict between the practices defined by Zimbabwean Constitutional law regarding the status of women and what is the actual situation on the ground, also considering the role of the church in confronting or conforming to the cultural norms. I have likewise highlighted the conflict in the Pauline tradition where one hand women are given more active roles in the church than could be expected according to the customs of the time, but on the other hand are still bound by an oppressive tradition. I have concluded by suggesting how the church can act in order to break free of this oppressive tradition and bring about change in the habitus of the society. / New Testament / M. Th.

Lapointe, Pierre-Louis 24 April 2018 (has links)
