The sources of secularity : the making of Charles Taylor's theory of secularization

Tableau d’honneur de la Faculté des études supérieures et postdoctorales, 2008-2009 / Les universitaires de partout dans le monde s'intéressent de plus en plus aux phénomènes religieux contemporains. Même si le concept même de ± religion¿ est sujet à débat, plusieurs travaux académiques se sont arrêtés à la relation entre la religion et la modernité telle que comprise au travers de la théorie de la sécularisation. Le philosophe canadien Charles Taylor a démontré un vif intérêt pour cette question et a étudié en profondeur toutes les différentes facettes du concept académique de la sécularisation. Tout au long de sa carrière, il s'est penché sur ce sujet, processus qui a culminé en 2007 avec la parution de A Secular Age paru chez Harvard University Press. Alors que les études en sciences humaines sur la sécularisation ont eu tendance à adopter, d'une part, la perspective de la fin des religions et, de l'autre, le modèle d'économies religieuses, Taylor, de son côté, a patiemment construit un modèle phénoménologique sophistiqué afin de mieux comprendre le rôle de la religion en Occident et internationalement. Le but de ma thèse est de présenter les éléments majeurs de la philosophie de Charles Taylor pour dévoiler l'importance de sa critique soutenue de l'épistémologie moderne dans sa théorie de la sécularisation. Les lecteurs / lectrices de Taylor sont en train de découvrir ses idées sur le séculier grâce à son nouveau livre, mais ce proj et se base sur la relecture de son oeuvre élaborée au fil des 50 dernières années, afin de situer sa théorie de la sécularisation dans le contexte de sa pensée philosophique jusqu'à la parution de A Secular Age.

L’enseignant d’Éthique et culture religieuse, depuis la mise en place du programme en 2008 dans les écoles du Québec, est appelé à relever d’importants défis inhérents à son rôle professionnel. Si un devoir de neutralité lui incombe officiellement, la posture lui permettant d’aborder les questions relatives à la différence culturelle n’est pourtant pas clairement définie. C’est à la lumière d’orientations ministérielle telles que les finalités du programme d’ÉCR et via la définition de concepts clés comme la laïcité, le relativisme et l’universalisme que l’auteure s’emploie à préciser la posture de l’enseignant d’ÉCR. Cette dernière propose, au terme de sa démarche, la conception de « neutralité mesurée » qui, basée sur des considérations pratiques, vise à soutenir les enseignants dans leur pratique. Cette perspective, s’arrimant aux visées de l’État québécois, se place en amont d’une gestion pluraliste de la diversité et de la mise en application des valeurs communes.

A participatory inquiry into cultural and religious discourses that either silence or promote gay voices

This study is an inquiry into discourses which influence gay people's lives. Foucault's ideas regarding knowledge, power, discipline, discourse and sexuality form the epistemological background enabling a social constructivist-deconstructive analysis of these concepts in relation to the problem of homosexuality. The theological origins of influential discourses form the focus of one chapter. Additional discursive fields - such as psychology, education, the military and legislature - are also investigated. Besides the research initiator, three other participants shared their experiences of being gay in a conservative religious context. The narrative analysis spawned five themes of discourse ranging from homophobic discourses - which invite oppression into silence - through reverse-discourse, to those discourses which encourage free expression of gayness. The study seems to support a Foucauldian view that there are various influential power-relations which contest for the right to define human sexuality. Religion and film in American culture : the birth of a nation

This research addresses an emerging scholarship examining relations between media, religion, and culture in contemporary society. Whilst it acknowledges the value of this growing body of work, the study is based on a recognition that an overwhelming concern with the contemporary scene has resulted in a neglect of the history responsible for the conditions of the present. Given the prominence of America as both a source and an object of this scholarship, moreover, the particular national context in which the institutions and practices of the US media have developed has been taken for granted somewhat. Oriented towards these perceived lacunae, this thesis examines the interaction between religion and film as an influence upon the development of American culture in the twentieth-century. The dissertation is divided into two main parts. The first of these is devoted to an extended discussion of the scholarly background to the research, and argues that the historical dimension of the interrelationship between religion and film in America is worthy of more attention than it has hitherto received. In particular, it stresses the fundamental importance of religion within the discourse of national identity in the United States, and posits the notion of a non-denominational American civil religion as a useful theoretical tool with which to examine Hollywood as a distinctively 'American' form of cinema. Part Two develops this position through a case study of The Birth of a Nation, directed by D.W. Griffith, and one of the most famous films of all time. Discussing the picture as a response to a crisis in American Protestantism, the study argues that the race controversy prompted by its Southern viewpoint was, to some extent, a function of Griffith's ambitions to revive the traditional religious bases of U.S. national identity via the medium of film. Furthermore, it suggests that the impact of Birth helped enact a broader transformation of American culture, wherein the cinema became instrumental in sustaining the belief that the United States was a nation uniquely favoured by Providence.

This thesis examines the role of Christianity in contemporary American culture using 1990s popular media as cultural artifacts. Building on theories of ideological analysis and hegemony, this project uncovers a balance between progressive and traditionalist ideologies in American culture with progressive ideologies most often superficially acknowledged and incorporated into dominant traditionalist Christian ideologies through hegemonic negotiation. An analysis of the popular Hollywood films The Last Temptation of Christ, Leap of Faith, Michael, City of Angels, Dogma and Keeping the Faith, illustrates this process by addressing Christian dominance in multicultural America, a backlash against feminism constructed through patriarchal and “family values” ideologies, and an integration of popular culture and traditionalist Christianity.

A discourse in an organized celebration with biblical texts requires that the president, or being, the priest who preside the celebration, on the one hand, respect and explain the celebrative messages, and on the other hand, adapt to the cultural situation and the demands of the faith of the listeners. He should be aware of their spiritual and cultural conditions. Upon researching the existing relationship among current values in the discourse of the cleric and churchgoers, we aim to clear up the motives that cause these churchgoers to change to diverse parishes that profess the same religious creed, in this case the Catholicism. The cleric s discourse in the parish Nossa Senhora das Graças attempts to show how the obligation of a Christian who develops concrete attitudes is. Not all the churchgoers interpret it in this way. We know through the research that the fact of the faithful catholic not having an understanding of the discourse utilized by the priest of this specific parish is related to the fact that the content of the discourse presents a macro-social vision, while the churchgoer looks for through religion or the institution of the Church, a communication with God related to his everyday problems, in familial relations and everything which involves his life. It s possible to perceive in the discourse of the priests and the reliable of this parish, the religious conception that each one has and insists on transmit. / O objeto de análise dessa investigação é o discurso do clero na paróquia Nossa Senhora das Graças no período de agosto de 2000 a dezembro de 2001, durante as homilias dominicais. Visa perceber o entendimento e a interpretação que os fiéis dessa comunidade fazem desse discurso. Um discurso em uma celebração estruturada com textos bíblicos requer que o presidente, ou seja, o padre que preside a celebração, de um lado, respeite e explique as mensagens celebrativas e, de outro, se adapte à situação cultural e às exigências de fé dos ouvintes. Ele deverá ter consciência dos próprios condicionamentos culturais e espirituais. Ao pesquisar a relação existente entre os valores presentes nos discursos do clero e nos dos fiéis, visamos esclarecer os motivos que levam esses fiéis a fazerem um trânsito nas diversas paróquias que professam o mesmo credo religioso, no caso o catolicismo. O discurso do clero da paróquia Nossa Senhora das Graças tenta mostrar como é o compromisso do cristão que desenvolve atitudes concretas. Os fiéis, nem todos o interpretam dessa forma. Percebemos através da pesquisa que o fato do fiel católico não ter um entendimento do discurso utilizado pelo sacerdote nessa paróquia específica, está relacionado ao fato do conteúdo do discurso apresentar uma visão macro-social, enquanto que o fiel busca, por meio da religião ou da instituição Igreja, uma comunicação com Deus relacionando seus problemas do cotidiano, nas relações familiares e em tudo que envolve sua vida. É possível perceber no discurso dos sacerdotes e no discurso dos fiéis dessa paróquia, a concepção religiosa que cada um tem e faz questão de transmitir.

Introdução: as comunidades religiosas fornecem um sistema de significados que impregna as relações familiares com conteúdo espiritual duradouro e sensação de pertencimento, prevendo sanções, reforçando a coesão entre os membros, resolvendo conflitos, além de identificar e perseguir os objetivos desejados coletivamente. O papel da religião, nesse contexto, não se restringe apenas ao âmbito sociocultural e comportamental, exercendo influência significativa na constituição da personalidade do indivíduo ao longo do ciclo da vida e, principalmente, no desenvolvimento infantil. A Vila Céu do Mapiá é uma comunidade formada por membros da religião brasileira Santo Daime. Situada no interior da Floresta Amazônica, no município de Pauini, Estado do Amazonas, é considerada a sede mundial da religião daimista. Objetivos: considerando o desenvolvimento infantil como um processo ativo e dependente da interação entre a criança e o ambiente, e admitindo que uma das principais influências sobre o desenvolvimento reside no processamento interno que a criança faz das experiências que vive, esta pesquisa apresenta uma sistematização dos resultados de estudos que analisaram o perfil psicológico de crianças participantes da doutrina do Santo Daime residentes na Vila Céu do Mapiá, relativos ao desenvolvimento emocional e cognitivo, visando contribuir para um melhor conhecimento das condições psicológicas das crianças e auxiliar em planejamentos de eventuais serviços de saúde mental na região. Método: foram avaliadas onze crianças com idade entre 6 e 9 anos, sendo aplicado o Teste das Matrizes Progressivas Coloridas de Raven (Escala Especial), para selecionar crianças sem indicadores de limitação intelectual; a Lista de Verificação Comportamental para Crianças (CBCL), para avaliar ausência de tratamento psicológico, neurológico e/ou psiquiátrico no último ano, complementada por informação referida por pais e/ou responsáveis em questionário de histórico pessoal. Garantiu-se assim uma amostra de crianças que apresentaram, dentro da disponibilidade de informação, índices de desenvolvimento típico da faixa etária. Cada protocolo de Rorschach coletado foi codificado por três juízes independentes, com posterior análise da concordância entre avaliadores. Resultados e discussão: a análise do Rorschach priorizou as variáveis de autopercepção, aspectos cognitivos e relacionamento interpessoal. Os resultados indicaram que as crianças apresentam adequação às convenções da realidade, com boa capacidade de abstração, simbolização e reflexão. Também foram identificados baixos escores no autoconceito (autopercepção) e relacionamento interpessoal. A respeito destes índices, é importante mencionar que valores baixos podem ser consequência da forma específica de interação cultural com demandas coletivas altas e baixo senso de eficácia, intensificados pelo alto senso de dever e disciplina, basilares desse tipo de comunidade rural e religiosa, em que as relações sociais são marcadas por comportamentos cooperativos e apropriados, nos quais a criança tende a antecipar relações favoráveis com o ambiente. The role of religion in that context is not restricted to socio-cultural and behavioral scope, exercising significant influence on individual personality formation during the life cycle, especially in child development. The Vila Céu do Mapiá is a community formed by members of the Santo Daime Brazilian religion. Situated inside the Amazon Forest, in the municipality of Pauini, Amazonas State, it is considered the world headquarters of the daimista religion. Objectives: Considering child development as an active and dependent process of interaction between the child and the environment, and admitting that one of the major influences on the development lies in the internal processing that the child does before life experiences, this research presents a systematization of results of studies that analyzed the psychological profile of participating children in the Santo Daime doctrine, related to emotional and cognitive development, to better understand the psychological conditions of those children and provide assistance to mental health services planning in the region. Method: Eleven children aged between 6 and 9 years were assessed through the Ravens progressive matrice test (special scale), to select children without intellectual limitation indicators; the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), to evaluate the absence of psychological, neurological and/or psychiatric treatment in the previous year, complemented with information reported by parents or guardians in the personal history questionnaire. Thus was assured a children sampling presenting, based on the information provided, typically developing rates for its age group. Three independent judges, with subsequent evaluator analysis, coded each Rorschach protocol collected. Results and discussion: the analysis of the Rorschach prioritized self-perception variables, cognitive aspects and interpersonal relations. Results indicated that the children present adequation to the reality conventions, with good capacity for abstraction, symbolization and reflection. Low scores were identified in self-concept and interpersonal skills. Regarding these contents, it is important to note that low values may result from specific form of cultural interaction between high collective demands and low sense of efficacy, enhanced by the high sense of duty and discipline, cornerstone of this type of rural and religious community, where relations are marked by cooperative and appropriate behaviors and in which children tend to anticipate favorable relations with the environment. This research is justified by the fact that the healers are a kind of cultural and religious artefact worthy of scientific study. The main obstacle is to understand, the historical condition of such agents, how their practices non- bureaucratic way and under what conditions the healers and the search for such practices are present today. The premise basic is the possibility that the practices of healing are social phenomena of diffusion and accommodation end cultural processes such as assimilation and enculturation from popular strongholds. Thus, the healing would then be a way of rationalizing the world, supposing that, official institutions do not have enough elements to give meaning to daily representations of the people who make use of them. As for the methodology, it is an empirical-bibliographic approach, which made it possible to qualify the subjects from their cultural actions, popular religious and therapeutic practices. The analysis of the relations between the concepts "popular" and "official" situated in the current context of rationality, in which the healers carry out their practices. Is pointed out as a result or product, the realization that despite the strong presence of rationalized and official practices in modernity, the healers and their blessings are shown to be appropriate in such a sociocultural context. / O objetivo desta pesquisa é identificar o locus socioantropológico da figura das benzedeiras dentro do processo histórico de suas inter-relações humanas com a cultura, a religião e a medicina institucionais. Justifica-se essa pesquisa pelo fato de que as benzedeiras são uma espécie de artefato cultural e religioso digno de ser estudado de forma científica. O problema central é entender como, na condição histórica de tais agentes, desenvolveram-se suas práticas de forma não burocrática e sob que condições as benzedeiras, as benzeções e a procura por tais práticas se fazem presentes atualmente. A premissa básica é a possibilidade de que as práticas de benzeção sejam fruto dos fenômenos sociais de assimilação e acomodação e de processos culturais como a difusão e a enculturação a partir de redutos populares. Assim, a benzeção seria então uma forma de racionalização simbólica do mundo, supondo que, as instituições oficiais não abarcariam elementos suficientes que sirvam para dar sentido às representações cotidianas dos indivíduos. Quanto à metodologia, trata-se de uma abordagem empírico-bibliográfica, utilizando-se na pesquisa de campo da técnica de entrevista a partir de um questionário fechado, o qual, possibilitou qualificar os sujeitos a partir de suas ações culturais, saberes religiosos e práticas terapêuticas. Realizou-se a análise das relações entre os conceitos “popular” e “oficial” situados no contexto atual de racionalidade, no qual, as benzedeiras realizam suas práticas. Aponta-se como resultado ou produto, a constatação de que apesar da forte presença das práticas racionalizadas e oficiais na modernidade, as benzedeiras e suas benzeções mostram-se como condizentes em tal contexto sociocultural.

The re-creation of ancient classical religions on the World Wide Web : Neopaganism as contemporary mythopoesis

The thesis argues that Neopaganism on the Web is an example of mythopoesis and aims at showing both the novelty and the limits of such mythopoesis. I use the term "mythopoesis" in its original Greek meaning, i.e. "the creation (the making/crafting) of a myth or myths", thus stressing the dynamic way in which the process of creation (of myths, rituals, divinities, identities—all implicitly or explicitly played out, connected, and organised as "stories", which can be told, written or performed, as well as represented as images) unfolds in Neopaganism. Neopagan mythopoesis on the Web is new, original, and structurally different from other previous and contemporary examples of mythopoesis, either religious or not, since it does not refuse, put aside, or implicitly contradict, the rational framework elaborated by Western culture. The research involves exploring the contemporary cultural and historical context that allows for mythopoesis to take place and the technology that allows for it to develop. It analyses the key features of Neopaganism on the Web as they emerge from the mythopoeic recreation of two ancient goddesses (Gaia, and Artemis/Diana) and an ancient ritual (the Eleusinian mysteries). In covering several different fields (from ancient religions, to the Internet, to myth and ritual theory), and in examining a range of heterogeneous materials (from ancient texts, Neopagan hymns and art, to hypertexts), the analysis adopts an interdisciplinary approach.
