An Examination of the Relationship Between Teacher Efficacy and Teacher Religiosity

Wright, Karen K. 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between teacher religiosity and teacher self-efficacy. The present study builds upon previous research which has shown purposeful work in everyday living fosters intrinsic motivation, religious orientation affects daily living, and teacher self-efficacy beliefs predict student achievement. Religiosity and self-efficacy data were gathered from public school teachers from a suburban school district in North Texas and from private Christian schools in Western Washington. The Age Universal I-E scale (a measure of religious orientation intended to capture how one lives out his/her religiosity), Teachers' Sense of Efficacy Scale, and a teacher characteristic form were used to collect data. In a multiple regression analysis, independent variables included teacher age, gender, grade level taught, experience level, campus type (public or private religious), and teacher religious orientation (intrinsic or extrinsic); the dependent variable was the score for teacher self-efficacy. The regression analysis resulted in an equation that explained only slightly more than 9% of the variance in the score for teacher self-efficacy. Three significant variables were identified--grade level taught, teacher age, and intrinsic religious orientation. Teacher age and teacher intrinsic religious orientation were the two most important contributors according to a comparison of beta weights. Intrinsic religious orientation contributed to the equation, but it acted as a suppressor variable in the study, having little predictive value by itself but contributing to the predictive value of the model. Based on the data collected, recommendations for future research and suggestions for field application are offered.

Starting from reflections about the relationship among society, it's religiosity and the finitude of men, this work intends to approach the attitudes of the living in face of death. In Catholicism death is understood as a passage from one world to another, establishing obligations between the living and the dead, the latter being in a moment of liminarity. It is the living's responsability to prepare a rite of passage which grants a tranquil transition of the dead; it's soul must, then, move towards it's final ending, towards another life, another border. Empirically, this matter will be observed from the observation of funerary rituals in the city of Presidente Kubitschek, in Vale do Jequitinhonha, and from the apreciation of Jubileu de São Miguel das Almas in the Cemitério do Peixe, both in Minas Gerias, Brazil. Thus, from the Ethnographic method, this research will clarify the existing rites of passage in the experience of popular Catholicism and the possible transformations in the attitudes of men towards death – these reffer to the relationships established among the living, and among them and the dead and the souls. Such link is constituted before, during and after the death rituals. It was verified that the moment of death outstands in the popular experience of Catholicism, where the collective rite has the uttermost importance, for it is the link among family, neighbours and friends. It is concluded that these precise moments, when everybody is together, are the ones that makes rite a moment of sociability, solidarity and festivity.

Strelhow, Miriam Raquel Wachholz January 2017 (has links)
This thesis aims to investigate the relationship of spirituality and religiosity with the wellbeing of adolescents, considering both subjective and psychological well-being. Six studies were developed. The first one is a Systematic Review that sought to verify the relationship between well-being and spirituality and religiosity among adolescents, based on empirical articles published in the last 5 years. We selected 26 articles that indicate that there is a relationship between these aspects, and that this is generally positive. Studies 2 to 4 present a psychometric evaluation of the following instruments: Psychological Well-being Scale, Duke Religious Index, and the Spirituality, Religion and Personal Beliefs module (WHOQOLSRPB). Study 5 investigates a hypothetical model of well-being among adolescents, composed of dimensions of subjective and psychological well-being. Study 6 seeks to investigate the relationship of spirituality and religiosity with the well-being of Brazilian adolescents. In the latter two studies, the possible differences in the measures used by age and sex are also analyzed. The sample of studies 2 to 6 was composed of 1,248 Brazilian adolescents aged 12 to 18 years (M = 15.09, SD = 1.77). The research was conducted online, through a website created specifically for this purpose. For study 4, 58 adolescents (M = 14.08, SD = 1.65) also participated in focus groups. For studies 5 and 6, in addition to the instruments already cited, a life satisfaction scale (BMLSS) and an affects scale (CAS) were used. The results of studies 2 to 4 indicated, in general, good overall fit indices for factor analysis (exploratory and confirmatory), as well as the invariance of instruments by sex and age. In study 5 we tested models of relations between subjective and psychological well-being through SEM. From the results, we opted for an integrated, single-factor model, explaining both measures. In study 6 the results indicated positive relations between spirituality and religiosity with the integrated model of well-being. Regarding the differences by means, for subjective well-being were found significant differences by sex (girls with larger means), and for psychological well-being differences by sex and age, with the results presented for each subscale. Regarding religiosity and spirituality there were differences both by sex and by age. In general, girls presented higher averages, and a pattern of age differences was not found. The conclusion is that the subjective and psychological well-being of adolescents are highly correlated and can be understood in an integrated model of well-being, and that both spirituality and religiosity have positive contributions to this well-being.

Pesquisa do Estado da Bahia - FAPEB / The speech is the effect of meaning produced in the relationship between subjects affected forever by ideology. It is spread from the media that , in turn , are major broadcasters from a set of symbols that make us recover the historical and ideological construct that pervade the discourse. The advertising text as any materiality works as a spreader of discourses which the human being can maintain contact with, making certain images circulates and reinforcing stereotypes about many social groups represented by them. In the case of the tourism advertising about Bahia, it is possible to notice that in the discourse used, it is not only for advertising about touristic spots to be visited, climate, food, etc., but also the image of people who live in this destination in the case, baianos. The state of Bahia charges a particular thing which configures discursively the notion that all ?baianos? are party people, they do not have willingness to work, being happy, religious, mystic, friendly and mainly, lazy. This discursive construction of people from Bahia comes from its history, culture and the ideological subject?s identification e non-identification processes with certain discursive positions in the course of the time. Thus, the present work aims to analyze the discourse built in a magazine named Viagem e Turismo, considering the points found in a previous analysis of the corpus representing the ?bainanidade: happiness, laziness and religiosity. It is justified because contributes the comprehension about the representatives ways of the baiano?s and national?s discourses, helping the understanding of the discourse function in the subject?s image construction process based on the P?cheux?s Discourse Analysis. The Impact of Perceived Stress, Happiness, and Religiosity on Political Orientation

Daniels, Bryant 01 January 2020 (has links)
Increasing stress levels over the past 30 years have reached an all-time high, which has also correlated with an increase in medical insurance costs due to the adverse effects on life expectancy, obesity rates, and non-communicable disease deaths. An additional social problem affecting the U.S. is a 20-year increase in political dichotomy. Research has shown a distinction between liberals and conservatives on a variety of characteristics ranging from sleep patterns, disgust, personality, and even cleanliness. This current study used two other characteristics that correlate with both stress and political orientation, and they are happiness and religiosity. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between perceived stress, happiness, religiosity, and political orientation. Two theories chosen for this study included System Justification Theory (SJT) and Moral Foundations Theory (MFT). Both theories relate to the differences between liberals and conservatives on happiness, religion, and morality. This study had 201 participants recruited via Amazon's MTurk and used a hierarchical multiple regression model, which includes the following psychometric instruments: Perceived Stress Scale-10, Subjective Happiness Scale, Satisfaction With Life Scale, Religious Orientation Scale (Intrinsic and Extrinsic), and the Modified Wilson-Patterson Inventory. There was a significant effect found between intrinsic religiosity and conservative political orientation. In assisting social and behavioral scientists at better understanding stress differences and how humans cope in unique ways, positive social change is made possible by mitigating stress levels and therefore decreasing healthcare costs.

Forgiveness, Gratitude, Humility, and Spiritual Struggle: Associations with Religious Belief Status and Suicide Risk

Hall, Benjamin B 01 August 2021 (has links)
Religion is a known contributor to suicide risk, with both positive and negative effects. Negative religious experiences, such as spiritual struggle, can exacerbate suicide risk. Alternatively, religion may promote positive psychological characteristics associated with reduced suicide risk, such as forgiveness, gratitude, and humility. However, research has yet to assess how religious changes, including conversion and deconversion, affect the linkage between religious risk and protective factors and suicidal behavior. We conducted three studies assessing these associations across four belief status groups: life-long religious believers, former religious non-believers who now believe, life-long religious non-believers, and former religious believers who no longer believe. Participants recruited online completed the Suicidal Behaviors Questionnaire – Revised, the Religious and Spiritual Struggles Scale, the Heartland Forgiveness Scale, the Gratitude Questionnaire, and the Comprehensive Intellectual Humility Scale. In our first study, we assessed differences in mean levels of spiritual struggle, forgiveness, humility, and gratitude, across each group. In our second study, we assessed the association between forgiveness, gratitude, humility, spiritual struggle and suicide risk, and differences in these relations across each group. In our final study, we assessed the potential moderating effect of forgiveness, gratitude, and humility on the relation between spiritual struggle and suicide risk, and differences in these moderating effects for each group. Our results indicate that some positive psychological virtues, and their impact on suicide risk may differ based on religious belief status. Similarly, our results suggest that while spiritual struggles are associated with suicide risk regardless of religious belief status, positive psychological variables (i.e., forgiveness, gratitude, humility) may mitigate suicide risk differently based on one’s religious belief status. Changes in, or the maintenance of, one’s religious beliefs may be an important consideration in the development of positive psychological interventions (e.g., forgiveness therapy, gratitude diary) aimed at ameliorating suicide risk in the context of spiritual struggle. Additionally, religiously oriented psychotherapies (e.g., RI-CBT) may be an important therapeutic intervention for individuals at high risk for suicide experiencing spiritually related distress.

Religiosidade neopentecostal metainstitucional : uma religiosidade sem limites /

Morais, Edson Elias de January 2019 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: We aimed to analyze the Brazilian evangelical religiosity and revisit the classic typologies that sediment most, if not all of them, researched on the evangelical field. It was in the 90’s that unprecedented research on the religious diversity of the evangelical world took place, mainly from the consolidation of the churches that became known as neopentecostals. Paul Freston's Doctoral Thesis and Ricardo Mariano's Master's Thesis have become mandatory references to understand the evolution, developments and diversity of the evangelical world. The typologies created to order and classify the various evangelical groups at that time were based on Max Weber's Comprehensive Sociology and, as we know, they cannot be understood as ontological categories, but as analytical instruments of reality, so they cannot crystallize and to dehistoricize. The problematic part of this question, since countless researches since then use the same typologies without making the proper reservations, not clarifying the changes in the religious practice of the faithful in many local churches that, in a few cases, put them in check. We did not aim to reconstruct such typologies, but we question their heuristic capacity to explain current religious manifestations in the evangelical field, as cultural transformations have increasingly blurred the denominational boundaries of these churches. Instead of greater diversity, we start from the hypothesis that neopentecostal religiosity has been assimilated to d... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Doutor

Fenomén reliktní hranice a její vliv na religiozitu obyvatelstva a sakrální krajinu Manětínska / The phenomenon of relict border and its influence on the religiosity of the population and the sacral landscape in Manětín

Bačo, Jaroslav January 2020 (has links)
The presented diploma thesis deals with the effects of the Czech-German relict border on the religiosity and the sacral landscape of the city region called Manetin, which consists of the permanent Czech territory and the Nectiny village of German historical origin. The theoretical introduction of this work therefore includes a part dedicated to the topic of borders, introducing different types of borders, focusing particularly on the terms relict and ethnic borders used in the further study. The second part of the theoretical introduction contains the characteristics of the religiosity and the sacral landscape, its evolution on the national level after the Second World War, highlighting the consequent processes related to the exile of the German population after 1945. The research section of the thesis consists of the micro-regional analysis of the reference region. The analysis is based on the field study and semi-structured interviews, which were complemented by the demographic statistics. The main aim of the investigation presented in the thesis is to analyze the differences in the religiosity and the sacral landscape in the regions under study through the chosen methodological approaches and consequently to evaluate the continuity of the relict border existence. Key words: relict border,...

The Impact of Client and Therapist Religious Commitment on Psychotherapy in a University Counseling Center

Brown, Brodrick Thomas 01 June 2021 (has links)
Religion is important to many Americans and the way they approach life, but psychologists are less likely than the general population to be religious. Because of this, it is important to not only know how religious commitment can influence clients' outcome and experience in psychotherapy, but also how the level of match between client and therapist religious commitment might impact those variables. The current study was undertaken in order to investigate how client religious commitment impacts distress at the beginning and end of treatment, how therapist religious commitment impacts the use of religious/spiritual interventions in therapy, and whether the level of match between client and therapist religious commitment predicts client perception of therapy and/or outcome. Seven hundred and thirty individual therapy clients at a university counseling center completed measures of religious commitment, symptom distress, and concerns about therapy throughout their course of treatment. Forty-four therapists also completed a measure of religious commitment in addition to session-by-session checklists detailing what types of interventions they used in each appointment with participating clients. Client religious commitment was found to significantly predict lower initial distress (B = -0.77, p < 0.001, R2 = 0.07, 95% CI [-0.97, -0.57]) and lower distress at the end of therapy(B = -0.32, p = 0.001, R2 = 0.34, 95% CI [-0.51, -0.14]), and fewer concerns about therapy predicted better outcomes (B = 2.04, p < 0.001, R2 = 0.38, 95% CI [1.52, 2.52]). Contrary to the findings of previous research, therapist religious commitment did not predict use of religious/spiritual interventions in therapy (B = 0.05, p = 0.062, R2 = 0.09, 95% CI [-0.002, 0.11]). Finally, level of match between client and therapist religious commitment was not related to client concerns about therapy (B = -0.002, p = 0.161, 95% CI [-2.40, 9.57]) or client outcomes B = -0.014, p = 0.120, 95% CI [-0.03, 0.004]). Possible explanations and influencing factors are put forth and the findings are discussed in the context of a highly religious population.
