Persuasion and the "mediatisation" of culture: a rhetorical criticism of South African television news reports on crime and the criminal justice system

Nkoala, Sisanda Bukeka 30 August 2022 (has links) (PDF)
This study undertakes a rhetorical analysis of South African television news reports on the criminal justice system. The aim is to build on the existing rhetoric culture theory by considering the persuasive communicative work performed through the mediatisation of a cultural system. The overarching issues that the study sets out to explore are the persuasive communicative work being performed by South African television news reports on crime and justice and how these reports frame or represent crime, justice, and the criminal justice system in this persuasive communication work. It also analyses the rhetorical strategies and devices employed in these reports. This qualitative study was undertaken using elements of grounded theory methodology and elements of the case study method. The analysis was undertaken on 90 days of prime time news bulletins from SABC and eTV, aired in 2019 and 2020. The Burkean notion of language as symbolic action is the framework that informs this study. The study also draws on Metz's notions on film semiotics and Walton's concept of persuasive argumentation scheme. In critiquing how South African television news reports re-present crime, justice, and the criminal justice system in doing persuasive communicative work and the rhetorical strategies and devices they employ, the study discusses contextual framing as the key strategy employed, and amplification as the most notable rhetorical device. It also highlights that the criminal justice system is virtually ignored in these reports. Instead, the focus is on elements of the system, such as the people, the procedures, and the places. In considering these elements, what emerges is a system whose focus changes from year to year depending on what is topical; a system where women are the primary and secondary victims of crime, and men are active agents both in terms of how they are depicted as criminals and how they are featured as the ones with the solutions to the crime problem; a system that operates in urban areas; and a system whose most important player is the police minister. The study finds that South African television news reports' mediatisation of the criminal justice system employs framing to ensure that the viewer is inclined to interpret the developments being reported on from the journalist's perspective. It also relies on amplification as a rhetorical device that makes salient those aspects that the reporter deems significant to make them stand out to the audience. In the present age where most people's exposure to the justice system is through the mediated experience of watching something about, through the analysis undertaken, the study has theorised that to understand a televised cultural system, we must consider how television frames that system and the aspects of the system that it amplifies as a medium.

Analýza spontánního hlášení nežádoucích účinků vakcíny InfanrixHexa / Analysis of Spontaneous Adverse Events Reports of InfanrixHexa vaccine

Kovaříková, Klára January 2020 (has links)
Analysis of spontaneous adverse events reports of Infanrix hexa vaccine Author: Klára Kovaříková Supervisor: PharmDr. Eva Zimčíková, Ph.D. Department of Social and Clinical Pharmacy, Faculty of Pharmacy in Hradec Králové, Charles University Introduction: Infanrix hexa vaccine is used for vaccination of infants and toddlers against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, hepatitis B, poliomyelitis and disease caused by Haemophilus influenzae type b. Analysis of spontaneous adverse drug reactions (ADRs) reports is one of the most important sources of information to evaluate drug-related risks. Objective: The aim of this study was to analyse spontaneous ADRs reports of Infanrix hexa vaccine, which were sent to the State Institute for Drug Control (SÚKL) database in the period from 2004 to 2017. Methods: The data was analysed using descriptive statistic in MS Excel. ADRs were classified according to the MedDRA. Seriousness and expectedness of ADRs were evaluated. Results: Overall 1288 reports were obtained containing 4334 ADRs, approximately 3.4 ADRs per report. Infanrix hexa vaccine was the only suspected drug in most of the reports (75.9%). Physicians were the most frequent reporters (70.2%). Serious ADRs were found in 84.3% of reports. The most frequent ADRs were general disorders and administration site...

LA DISCIPLINA DEGLI SCRITTI ANONIMI NEL DIRITTO AMMINISTRATIVO

NATALELLO, DORIANA 22 June 2021 (has links)
The dissertation aims to conduct an in-depth examination of anonymous reports’ legal framework in administrative law. In the absence of general provisions on the topic, the research focused on understanding the relevance attributed to anonymous reports by italian public law, both substantive and procedural. Much has been written on the subject of anonymous documents in the field of criminal law, yet the topic was much less studied in administrative law. Recently, though, attention to this theme increased, as demonstrated both by the issuance of regulations concerning anonymous reporting by several independent authorities and the numerous court rulings about anonymous reporting and its effects on the initiation of administrative proceedings. Significant signs of the increasing importance of the phenomenon in administrative law can also be inferred from the specific legislation of certain sectors of the law. The dissertation analyzed the various and often contradictory occurrences of anonymous reports in administrative law, in order to understand the scope of the phenomenon of anonymous reporting and to evaluate its compatibility with the general principles of administrative action. Indeed, the question of whether the submission of an anonymous report can bind the administration to initiate administrative proceedings calls for a in-depth consideration of the compatibility of the use of these reports with the principles governing administrative action in a democracy.

TOWARD EXCELLENCE WITH EQUITY: ROLE OF MATHEMATICS SELF-EFFICACY IN ENHANCING MATHEMATICS ACHIEVEMENT

Yao Yang (15337579) 21 April 2023 (has links)
<p> </p> <p>This dissertation researched the scope of mathematics achievement disparities in the United States and how these disparities can be minimized through a self-efficacy lens. To answer pertinent research questions with data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) 2019 mathematics assessment in Grades 4, 8, and 12, gap analyses, two-level cross-sectional multilevel modeling, and two-level structural equation modeling were conducted. The discoveries demonstrated that the excellence gaps in U.S. in mathematics achievement by race/ethnicity, gender, NSLP, ELL, and IEP persisted and widened from Grade 4 to Grade 8 yet decreased at Grade 12. Self-efficacy was a noteworthy predictor of students’ mathematics achievement, displaying large effect sizes across grades. The disparities in mathematics achievement by student subgroups lessened when students' self-efficacy was equal. Moreover, self-efficacy mediated the relationships between mastery-approach goals, performance-approach goals, interest, persistence in learning and achievement. Additional results demonstrated that the status of being racially/ethnically underrepresented students partially moderated the connections between motivational variables and mathematics achievement. School locale and the percentage of underrepresented students significantly impacted students’ achievement. This dissertation underscores the importance of self-efficacy in closing mathematics achievement gaps and improving students’ mathematics achievement. </p>

Threats about epidemics in the 21:th century. A questionnaire concerning preparedness and affectedness among nurses

Andersson, Åsa, Josephson, Anna January 2005 (has links)
The aim for the present study was to reach a deeper understanding and to describe how nurses are affected and prepare themselves before facing an abstract threat as a predicted epidemic. The study is empirical with a questionnaire of qualitative nature. Inspiration for analyzing data is taken from phenomenology, and the result are illustrated through KASAM. The participants were 39 nurses, employed at an Acute ward and an Infection ward. The results showed that nurses were affected, for example with fear, by threats concerning an epidemic. The majority expressed the need for more preparations. Two categories appeared; Emotional strategy and Practical Strategy.

Henriksson, I & Jönsson, M. Den svenska glasburken. En diskursanalys av Statens Offentliga Utredningar/ The Swedish glass jar. A discourse analysis of official government reports. Examensarbete i Socialt arbete 30 poäng. Malmö högskola: Hälsa och Samhälle, enheten för Hälsa och Samhälle, 2011.The purpose of this paper is to critically examine the representations that are created in official government reports on the "immigrant" and how, or whether this changed over time. We analyzed five different official government reports from the years 1972, 1989, 1995, 2003 and 2010. This is a discourse analysis where we analyze government reports with focus on how they create "the other" of the people who are classified as refugees or immigrants, and what representations are created. The theories we use in our work is about how discrimination appear primarily through the written language. We used a lot of the research made by social scientists Ylva Brune and Kristina Boréus, both as a theoretical framework and methodology to go through with the analysis. The results showed significant changes in awareness about the subject but not as big changes in how they actually created "the immigrant”.We argue that there is a need for social workers to engage in critical analyses of state polices as they in many ways shape the frame of our work. Thought this essay we hope to contribute to a more nuanced and less dichotomous discussion on issues of migration.

Who is the best judge of personality: Investigating the role of relationship depth and observational breadth on the accuracy of third-party ratings

Tindall, Mitchell 01 January 2015 (has links)
To date, the vast majority of research regarding personality in IO Psychology has relied on self-report assessments. Despite support for the utility of third-party assessments, IO Psychologists have only just begun extensive research in this area. Connelly and Ones (2010) conducted a meta-analysis that demonstrated that accuracy of third-party ratings improved as intimacy between the judge and the target grew. This remained true with the exception of predicting behavioral criteria, where non-intimates maintained superior predictability (Connelly & Ones, 2010). This was later contradicted by a recent investigation that found the best predictive validity for third-party assessments when they are taken from personal acquaintances as opposed to work colleagues (Connelly & Hulsheger, 2012). The current study is intended to investigate how the depth of the relationship and breadth of behavioral observations differentially moderate the relationship between third-party personality assessments and accuracy criteria (i.e., self-other overlap, discriminant validity and behavior). Results indicate that both depth and breadth impact accuracy criteria and they do so differentially based on trait visibility and evaluativeness. These findings will be discussed along with practical implications and limitations of the following research.

Leadership Orientations Ofcommunity College Presidents And The Administrators Who Report To Them: A Frame Analysis

McArdle, Michele 01 January 2008 (has links)
Presidents of Community Colleges and the administrators who reported directly to them were the subjects for this study based on the Four Frame Leadership Theory of Bolman and Deal (1990b). The Leadership Orientation (Self) Survey (LOS) was mailed to 169 community college presidents and administrators in the presidents' direct report teams. The final usable response rate of 69.82% to the survey fell within the acceptable range for education as defined by Boser and Green (1997). In addition, the subjects were asked to write about the most difficult challenge they had faced in their current position and how they handled that challenge. The purpose of this study was to determine (a) the usage of leadership frames from both groups; presidents and their administrative teams, (b) if gender or years of experience in their current positions were factors in leadership frame usage in each group, and (c) if there was a relationship between a president's frame usage and the frame usage of the members of the direct report team. The major findings were: 1. The presidents and administrators displayed the highest mean scores for the human resource frame with the mean scores of the three remaining frames (structural, political, and symbolic) clustering as a second unit of responses. In the narrative segment of the survey, the most frequently rated central theme among the presidents and the direct reports was the political frame. 2. The results from statistical analysis of the responses from both groups (presidents and the administrators who directly reported to them) did not show any statistically significant difference among frame use based on gender or number of years of experience in their positions. 3. The correlation coefficients did not indicate that there was a relationship in either direction regarding leadership style between the two groups (presidents and administrators). A phenomenological analysis of the scenario statements from these two groups indicated that presidents who used the political frame as a central theme tended to have administrators who also used the political frame as one or as a pair of central themes. Presidents who used the symbolic frame as a central theme tended to have administrators who used all four frames as central themes in their narratives. 4. A fourth finding was the discrepancy in the ability of the leaders to use multiple frames as demonstrated in the results from the quantitative and qualitative findings. The quantitative data suggested that these leaders were practicing the techniques of multi-framing more than one-half of the time. Contrary to this finding, the qualitative data showed that 5 of 30 scenario statements showed paired frames being used as central frames. 5. One additional finding based on the qualitative statements by presidents and their administrators revealed much thought and intentional practice in the leaders' ability to build teams.
