Kant on Human Dignity: A Conversation among Scholars

Enslin, John Victor January 2014 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Ronald K. Tacelli / This dissertation aims to examine the notion of 'human dignity' in Kant by means of a conversation with three Kantian scholars. One cannot understand Kant's notion of human dignity without placing it in the context of his moral thought. For this reason we look in Chapter One at the philosopher Roger Sullivan. His major work Immanuel Kant's moral theory includes a highly detailed treatment of human dignity. I shall present an analysis of his understanding within the context of his methodology and his general approach to Kant's moral philosophy. We look in Chapter Two at Susan Shell and her 'Kant on Human Dignity.' In addition to this, we consider Shell's methodology and some of her work on the early Kant where we find the roots of Kant's conception of dignity. Chapter Three addresses Oliver Sensen and his novel interpretation of Kant's use of the term 'dignity.' Utilizing the tools of Analytical Philosophy, he enters into dialogue with Kantian interpreters, suggesting that their understanding of dignity in Kant harbours elements at odds with Kant's thought and that they thus fail to grasp the radical nature of Kant's notion. In the final and Fourth Chapter, I try to bring these scholars into a conversation with each other. First, I show the strengths of each position and then, using insights of Sullivan, Shell and Sensen, I venture to ask whether one could not develop the notion of a phenomenology of dignity. I also consider whether in both Shell's and Sensen's account there is not an implicit dynamic at work, which suggests the necessity of transcendence and the Good. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2014. / Submitted to: Boston College.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Ivandra Previdi.pdf: 2305470 bytes, checksum: 482aedc2c4220cf9206dab33096fff01 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-10-24 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo / This is a research about the criminal investigation that resulted in the condemnation of the ex-physician Roger Abdelmassih to 278 years in prison, for sexual crimes perpetrated in the assisted reproduction clinic would command in São Paulo. Abdelmassih, now 73, assaulted the first patient when still a young doctor. Thereby, the main issue: how was it possible that this man acted for decades with impunity? From this question, derives the object of research: the silence that covered up the crimes, along with the silence of the victims themselves to begin with. To comprehend this fact, I have listed the following hypotheses: the fear that a possible complaint could turn back against the victims, the concern of losing the high amount of money invested in the ideal of motherhood and the feeling of inferiority towards the scientific knowledge – what has been proven by the depositions contained in the criminal process, which constitutes the corpus of this study. But even more emerged from the case files: beyond the victims themselves, there was a wide network of citizens who were aware of Abdelmassih´s criminal behaviour. Among them, there were some of his relatives and employees, physicians from other clinics, the medicine council, prosecutors, lawyers, and the mass media – including Globo TV, that did not air that which would be the first news report about the subject, based on the interviews of six women and edited almost one year before the scandal erupted. The extracts of the process are here analysed in the light of Communications and Journalism, with Eugenio Bucci, of Sociology and Philosophy, with Edgar Morin and Michel Foucault, and with the complementary support of Psychology and Law. Bucci teaches us how to see journalism as a democracy instrument, under an ethics perspective and the right to information. Edgar Morin sheds light on stretching Philosophy and Sociology to beyond the facts, which leads to a cultural-oriented approach to the events.

Machado, Franciele January 2016 (has links)

Le pictural dans la poétique de Rimbaud / The pictorial in Rimbaud’s poetics

Taniguchi, Madoka 27 October 2012 (has links)
In this analysis of how pictorial takes place in Rimbaud’s poetics, we aim at understanding the birth of pictorial, this particular image which compels the reader of Rimbaud’s poems. Pictorial refers to the plasticity of poetic imaging, when the ordering of words elicits the creation of a mental picture. This study does not deal with the relationship between a given poem and a given painting, but explores the link between the building of pictorial and the wording of expression. We attempt to show the importance of the pictorial that is anchored into Rimbaud’s poetics, through a study of how the elements of pictorial form and develop from his first poems to the Illuminations. We first explore the bookish knowledge of art that Rimbaud had acquired and the emergence of a personal definition of painting which gave birth to a primitive form of pictorial in the first poems of Rimbaud. Secondly, we examine the evolution of Rimbaud’s own pictorial after it had emerged from intentional borrowings from already established forms of expression : three consecutive chapters deal with ekphrasis, picturesque and metaphor in the descriptive poems of the Illuminations. By giving depth to the role of the pictorial’s medium, from poet to reader, reader to text, and text to poet, we analyze the incorporation of the poet’s ego in his poetry, under the pictorial viewpoint. Our research concludes with the esthetical correspondence between the poetic language of Rimbaud and the plastic language of Roger de La Fresnaye in his drawings to illustrate the Illuminations.

Strategies of Defending Astrology: A Continuing Tradition

Gee, Teri 11 December 2012 (has links)
Astrology is a science which has had an uncertain status throughout its history, from its beginnings in Greco-Roman Antiquity to the medieval Islamic world and Christian Europe which led to frequent debates about its validity and what kind of a place it should have, if any, in various cultures. Written in the second century A.D., Ptolemy’s Tetrabiblos is not the earliest surviving text on astrology. However, the complex defense given in the Tetrabiblos will be treated as an important starting point because it changed the way astrology would be justified in Christian and Muslim works and the influence Ptolemy’s presentation had on later works represents a continuation of the method introduced in the Tetrabiblos. Abū Ma‘shar’s Kitāb al-Madkhal al-kabīr ilā ‘ilm akām al-nujūm, written in the ninth century, was the most thorough surviving defense from the Islamic world. Roger Bacon’s Opus maius, although not focused solely on advocating astrology, nevertheless, does contain a significant defense which has definite links to the works of both Abū Ma‘shar and Ptolemy. As such, he demonstrates another stage in the development of astrology. These three works together reveal the threads of a trend of a rationalized astrology separated from its mythical origins which began with Ptolemy and survived through both medieval Islam and medieval Europe. In the two examples of defending astrology I have used, Abū Ma‘shar and Roger Bacon, Ptolemy’s influence can be seen to have persisted from the second century through to the thirteenth, and the nature of the differences in their defenses illustrates the continuation and evolution of the tradition of defending astrology.

Véronneau-McArdle, Mireille 11 1900 (has links) (PDF)
