The Implications of Multiple Stellar Formation Events for the Evolution of Globular Clusters

Downing, Jonathan M. B. 07 1900 (has links)

In this thesis we investigate the dynamical effect of a second generation of stellar formation in globular clusters in the context of the anomalous horizontal branch of NGC 2808. The horizontal branch of NGC 2808 is bifurcated in colour and exhibits an extended blue tail. This morphology can be explained if the blue tail stars have an enhanced helium content due to cluster self-enrichment. Specifically it has been proposed that NGC 2808 has experienced two distinct generations of star formation. The first generation has a top-heavy IMF, enhanced in 3 - 5Mo stars, and would produce many AGB stars within the first 200 Myrs of its life. The second generation then forms out of the helium-rich ejecta of the AGB stars and goes on to produce the blue tail in the horizontal branch that is currently observed in NGC 2808.

We use three types of simulations to investigate this scenario. For a control model we run a simulation with a Salpeter IMF and a single generation. We then run models with a top-heavy IMF and a single generation and models with a top-heavy IMF and two generations. In the two generation models we also investigate the effect of concentration by examining simulations with two different length scales.

We find that the models with the top-heavy IMF and a single generation are subject to extensive mass-loss in their early phases due to the large number of intermediate-mass stars and are less strongly affected by two-body relaxation than simulations with a Salpeter IMF. The models with two generations appear to be dynamically stable and long-lived objects, at least in their early stages. They seem to be observationally indistinguishable from single-generation clusters with Salpeter IMFs on the basis of their dynamics. The stellar populations of the two-generation clusters are found to have a much higher fraction of C-O white dwarfs than clusters with a Salpeter IMF. We find no evidence that these bodies will be preferentially scattered out of the system and they should remain part of the cluster until it dissolves after core collapse. The abundance of white dwarfs would provide an observational method of identifying two generation cluster candidates.

Overall we find the two-generation scenario to be plausible on the basis of dynamics but due to the overabundance of white dwarfs produced by the top-heavy IMF and based on other studies of the chemistry of AGB stars we conclude that this scenario is unlikely to be the sole explanation for globular cluster self-enrichment.
/ Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)

Francisco Neto, Antônio 14 October 2005 (has links)
A existência de estados ligados de um méson e um bárion foi também analisada / We consider the energy-momentum spectrum of lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) models, using the functional integral formulation, with imaginary time and in the strong coupling regime. This regime corresponds to taking the hopping parameter $\\kappa>0$ satisfying $1>>\\kappa>>\\beta>0$, where $\\beta\\equiv g_0^$ is the coupling parameter among the gauge fields, here defined in the $SU(3)$ Lie algebra. We consider QCD models with fermionic quark fields with one and two flavors (isospin) and in $2+1$ and $3+1$ dimensions, and different types of spin matrices. We analyzed the mesonic sector: one and two-particle spectra. We detected one-meson states and obtained their mass splittings. Depending on the model, two-meson states were also obtained. The existence of bound states of one baryon and one meson was also analyzed

Rebolini, Elisa 27 June 2014 (has links) (PDF)

Medium Modifications of Mesons

Hilger, Thomas 05 September 2012 (has links) (PDF)
The interplay of hadron properties and their modification in an ambient nuclear medium on the one hand and spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking and its restoration on the other hand is investigated. QCD sum rules for D and B mesons embedded in cold nuclear matter are evaluated. We quantify the mass splitting of D - D-bar and B - B-bar mesons as a function of the nuclear matter density and investigate the impact of various condensates in linear density approximation. The analysis also includes D_s and $D^*_0 mesons. QCD sum rules for chiral partners in the open-charm meson sector are presented at nonzero baryon net density or temperature. We focus on the differences between pseudo-scalar and scalar as well as vector and axial-vector D mesons and derive the corresponding Weinberg type sum rules. Based on QCD sum rules we explore the consequences of a scenario for the rho meson, where the chiral symmetry breaking condensates are set to zero whereas the chirally symmetric condensates remain at their vacuum values. The complementarity of mass shift and broadening is discussed. An alternative approach which utilizes coupled Dyson-Schwinger and Bethe-Salpter equations for quark-antiquark bound states is investigated. For this purpose we analyze the analytic structure of the quark propagators in the complex plane numerically and test the possibility to widen the applicability of the method to the sector of heavy-light mesons in the scalar and pseudo-scalar channels, such as the D mesons, by varying the momentum partitioning parameter. The solutions of the Dyson-Schwinger equation in the Wigner-Weyl phase of chiral symmetry at nonzero bare quark masses are used to investigate a scenario with explicit but without dynamical chiral symmetry breaking.

Etude ab initio des propriétés physiques des matériaux

Vast, Nathalie 13 July 2009 (has links) (PDF)
