<p>This thesis is a part of an effort to make a scalable behavioral model of the Central Processing Unit and instruction set compatible with the DSP56000 Processor. The goal of this design is to reduce the critical path, silicon area, as well as power consumption of the instruction decoder.</p><p>The instruction decoder consists of three different types of operations instruction fetching, decoding and execution. By using these three steps an efficient model has to be designed to get the shortest critical path, less silicon area, and low power consumption.</p>

Encryption Key Search using Java-based ALiCE Grid

Encryption Key Search is a compute-intensive operation that consists of a brute-force search of a particular key in a given key space. Sequential execution time for a 56-bit encryption key search is approximately 200,000 years and therefore it is ideal to execute such operation in a grid environment. ALiCE (Adaptive and scaLable internet-based Computing Engine) is a grid middleware that offers a portable software technology for developing and deploying grid applications and systems. Transactions Everywhere

Arguably, one of the biggest deterrants for software developers who might otherwise choose to write parallel code is that parallelism makes their lives more complicated. Perhaps the most basic problem inherent in the coordination of concurrent tasks is the enforcing of atomicity so that the partial results of one task do not inadvertently corrupt another task. Atomicity is typically enforced through locking protocols, but these protocols can introduce other complications, such as deadlock, unless restrictive methodologies in their use are adopted. We have recently begun a research project focusing on transactional memory [18] as an alternative mechanism for enforcing atomicity, since it allows the user to avoid many of the complications inherent in locking protocols. Rather than viewing transactions as infrequent occurrences in a program, as has generally been done in the past, we have adopted the point of view that all user code should execute in the context of some transaction. To make this viewpoint viable requires the development of two key technologies: effective hardware support for scalable transactional memory, and linguistic and compiler support. Cross Layer Design for Video Streaming over 4G Networks Using SVC

Fourth Generation (4G) cellular technology Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Long Term Evolution (LTE) offers high data rate capabilities to mobile users; and, operators are trying to deliver a true mobile broadband experience over LTE networks. Mobile TV and Video on Demand (VoD) are expected to be the main revenue generators in the near future [36] and efficient video streaming over wireless is the key to enabling this. 3GPP recommends the use of H.264 baseline profiles for all video based services in Third Generation (3G) Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) networks. However, LTE networks need to support mobile devices with different display resolution requirements like small resolution mobile phones and high resolution laptops. Scalable Video Coding (SVC) is required to achieve this goal. Feasibility study of SVC for LTE is one of the main agenda of 3GPP Release10. SVC enhances H.264 with a set of new profiles and encoding tools that may be used to produce scalable bit streams. Efficient adaptation methods for SVC video transmission over LTE networks are proposed in this thesis. Advantages of SVC over H.264 are analyzed using real time use cases of mobile video streaming. Further, we study the cross layer adaptation and scheduling schemes for delivering SVC video streams most efficiently to the users in LTE networks in unicast and multicast transmissions. We propose SVC based video streaming scheme for unicast and multicast transmissions in the downlink direction, with dynamic adaptations and a scheduling scheme based on channel quality information from users. Simulation results indicate improved video quality for more number of users in the coverage area and efficient spectrum usage with the proposed methods.

Scalable Proxy Architecture for Mobile and Peer-to-Peer Networks

The growth of wireless telecommunications has stipulated the interest for anywhere-anytime computing. The synergy between networking and mobility will engender new collaborative applications with mobile devices on heterogeneous platforms. One such middleware is “SYSTEM ON MOBILE DEVICES”, SYD developed by the Yamacraw Embedded Systems research team. This type of middleware is an opening step towards Peer-to-Peer mobile networks. This project envisioned collaborative applications among mobile devices and PDAs were used as servers. This thesis studies various existing architectures in mobile computing and their scalability issues. We also proposed new scalable flexible thick client proxy system FTCPS, an architecture suitable for mobile Peer-to-Peer networks. Our empirical study showed that FTCPS has low response time compared to other architectures.

Multimedia applications over the Internet and Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) gain a lot of attention. IPTV has a number of service requirements such as / high bandwidth, scalability, minimum delay, jitter and channel switch time. IP multicast, IMS (IP Multimedia System) Protocol and peer-to-peer approaches are proposed for implementing IPTV. However, IP multicast requires all the routers in the core network to possess multicast capability, IMS does not easily scale and P2P cannot eciently utilize the network resources because of its completely distributed nature. To this end, we propose new application layer multicast protocol Cluster Based Application Layer Multicast IPTV (CALMTV) which combines application layer multicast, scalable video coding and probing techniques to meet IPTV requirements. We present the components and their relevant algorithms and evaluate the performance of CALMTV with ns2 simulations. Our results compared with the published results of other IPTV architectures show that CALMTV has better performance in end-to-end delay and zapping time.

Scalable Multiple Description Coding and Distributed Video Streaming over 3G Mobile Networks

In this thesis, a novel Scalable Multiple Description Coding (SMDC) framework is proposed. To address the bandwidth fluctuation, packet loss and heterogeneity problems in the wireless networks and further enhance the error resilience tools in Moving Pictures Experts Group 4 (MPEG-4), the joint design of layered coding (LC) and multiple description coding (MDC) is explored. It leverages a proposed distributed multimedia delivery mobile network (D-MDMN) to provide path diversity to combat streaming video outage due to handoff in Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS). The corresponding intra-RAN (Radio Access Network) handoff and inter-RAN handoff procedures in D-MDMN are studied in details, which employ the principle of video stream re-establishing to replace the principle of data forwarding in UMTS. Furthermore, a new IP (Internet Protocol) Differentiated Services (DiffServ) video marking algorithm is proposed to support the unequal error protection (UEP) of LC components of SMDC. Performance evaluation is carried through simulation using OPNET Modeler 9. 0. Simulation results show that the proposed handoff procedures in D-MDMN have better performance in terms of handoff latency, end-to-end delay and handoff scalability than that in UMTS. Performance evaluation of our proposed IP DiffServ video marking algorithm is also undertaken, which shows that it is more suitable for video streaming in IP mobile networks compared with the previously proposed DiffServ video marking algorithm (DVMA).

A method for constructing a highly scalable bit stream for video coding is presented in detail and implemented in a demo application with a GUI in the Windows Vista operating system. The video codec uses the Discrete Wavelet Transform in both spatial and temporal directions together with a zerotree quantizer to achieve a highly scalable bit stream in the senses of quality, spatial resolution and frame rate. / I detta arbete presenteras en metod för att skapa en mycket skalbar videoström. Metoden implementeras sedan i sin helhet i programspråken C och C++ med ett grafiskt användargränssnitt på operativsystemet Windows Vista. I metoden används den diskreta wavelettransformen i såväl de spatiella dimensionerna som tidsdimensionen tillsammans med en nollträdskvantiserare för att åstakomma en skalbar videoström i avseendena bildkvalitet, skärmupplösning och antal bildrutor per sekund.
