The research carried out is justified because, according to the socio-cognitive aspect of Critical Discourse Analysis, the power of the media constructs texts that propitiate the mastery of the minds of its readers and so it is necessary to verify how the textual-discursive construction of the news facts for denounce what has been happening with the readers. It is understood that the great strategy used by journalists is to build the news by scandal and sensationalism. This thesis argues that according to the newspaper company's ideology some social issues are transformed into semantic areas for the anchoring of different news strategically elaborated by the scandal in order to attract the readers. 10 news articles, 07 news reports and the respective developments were published between 2012 and 2016 in Folha de S.Paulo (FSP) and O Estado de São Paulo (OESP) and Veja and IstoÉ magazines. The general objective is to contribute to the discursive studies of the construction of the scandal by the journalistic media and the specific ones: 1. To verify which strategy was used in the journalistic discourse to transform a news event into a scandal, producing sensationalism; 2. To examine how the repercussion of the scandal occurs in the construction of other texts of different discourses; 3. To reassess what social issues, at the time of the research, were transformed into semantic areas of the news for the anchoring of the meta-event building. The results indicate that: 1. The newspapers have an objective towards the readers through the sensational news that is to cause an emotional reaction; 2. The repercussion of the scandal in the construction of other texts occurs by capturing and subversion in transforming the licit act into illicit; 3. Some social issues transformed into semantic areas of news are anchored in the meta-event of impunity. It is concluded that the scandals are constructed sensationalist and exploited by the media due to the value of the news, that is, because it sells more newspaper and thus has more readers / Esta tese está situada na área da Análise Critica do Discurso e Semiótica Social, e tem por tema a construção textual-discursiva do escândalo em textos de notícias, reportagens e charges de mídia impressa e em redes sociais. Justifica-se a pesquisa realizada, pois segundo a vertente sócio-cognitiva da Análise Crítica do Discurso o poder da mídia constrói textos que propiciam o domínio da mente de seus leitores e assim é necessário verificar como ocorre a construção textual-discursiva dos fatos noticiosos para denunciar o que vem ocorrendo com os leitores. Entende-se que a grande estratégia utilizada pelos jornalistas é construir a notícia pelo escândalo e o sensacionalismo. Esta tese defende que de acordo com a Ideologia da empresa jornal algumas questões sociais são transformadas em áreas semânticas para a ancoragem de diferentes noticias elaboradas estrategicamente pelo escândalo a fim de atrair os leitores. Foram analisados 10 textos de notícias, 07 reportagens e os respectivos desdobramentos, publicadas entre 2012 e 2016 nos jornais Folha de S.Paulo (FSP) e O Estado de São Paulo (OESP) e as revistas Veja e IstoÉ. O objetivo geral é contribuir com os estudos discursivos da construção do escândalo pela mídia jornalística e os específicos: 1. Verificar qual estratégia utilizada no discurso jornalístico para transformar um fato noticioso em escândalo, produzindo o sensacionalismo; 2. Examinar como ocorre a repercussão do escândalo na construção de outros textos de diferentes discursos; 3. Resgatar quais questões sociais, no momento da pesquisa, foram transformadas em áreas semânticas das notícias para a ancoragem da construção do meta-acontecimento. Os resultados obtidos indicam que: 1. Os jornais têm um objetivo em relação aos leitores por meio da notícia sensacionalista que é causar uma reação emocional; 2. A repercussão do escândalo na construção de outros textos ocorrem pela captação e subversão ao transformar o ato licito em ilícito; 3. Algumas questões sociais transformadas em áreas semânticas das notícias estão ancoradas no meta-acontecimento da impunidade. Conclui-se que os escândalos são construídos de modo sensacionalista e explorados pela mídia devido ao valor da notícia, ou seja, porque vende mais jornal e com isso tem mais leitores

Priests' Perceptions of the Leadership Styles of U.S. Catholic Bishops

The United States Catholic bishops have used their authority to address the child sexual abuse scandal, but it has been problematic that no one has yet evaluated their exercised leadership styles. In this phenomenological study, I explored U.S Catholic priests' perceptions of the bishops' leadership styles related to how they handled the child sexual abuse scandal. Knowing the bishops' leadership styles was paramount to fill the research gap. The theoretical frameworks underpinning this study were transformational leadership, transactional leadership, charismatic leadership, and servant leadership. Data collected through interviews with 11 Catholic priests revealed their perceptions of how the behavioral characteristics of each leadership style influenced the management of the child sexual abuse scandal. Collected data were deductively coded, then subjected to a thematic analysis procedure. The research findings highlighted the bishops' predominant use of servant leadership style. The resulting themes were that (a) the bishops felt they were forced to listen, (b) they lacked the charisma to convince, (c) they were more interested in protecting the church, and (d) they paid remunerations to victims. The U.S Catholic bishops would benefit from this study as it reveals the remaining gaps in their predominant use of servant leadership style. The positive social change implications point to the bishops' using this study to facilitate more effective leadership styles when handling and preventing similar future crises while collaborating with the clergy, the religious, the faithful, and law enforcement officials in creating and sustaining awareness of child abuse prevention policy to avert future harms.

Fin 2001, début 2002, les États-Unis ont été frappés par un nombre élevé de scandales financiers. Plusieurs affaires ont été révélées par les médias, singulièrement le cas Enron. La reformulation de la profession d'audit en matière d'indépendance des auditeurs et des comités d'audit après le scandale Enron a cherché à garantir la crédibilité des états financiers. L'objectif de ce travail est de tester l'effet de la nouvelle formulation de la profession d'audit, notamment en matière d'indépendance des auditeurs et des comités d'audit, précisément sur la question de la crédibilité des états financiers. Trois objectifs opérationnels ont été traités dans le cadre de cette étude. Premièrement, nous avons analysé les effets de l’affaire Enron sur la réaction des marchés financiers, le choix des commissaires aux comptes et l’affermissement du conservatisme des auditeurs, dans le contexte français. Deuxièmement, nous avons étudié l’impact de l’institution du Haut Conseil du Commissariat aux Comptes sur l’indépendance des auditeurs. Finalement, nous avons étudié l’influence du Comité d’audit sur la crédibilité des états financiers après le rapport Bouton de 2002. Les résultats empiriques s’attachent à montrer que la présence d’un co-commissaire aux comptes Non-Big a minimisé l’effet négatif de la réaction du marché financier français lors de l’annonce du scandale Enron. Par contre, le scandale Enron n’a pas influencé significativement la perception des investisseurs institutionnels étrangers envers les services des grands cabinets d’audit. Ces derniers n’ont pas justifié la production d’une bonne qualité d’audit par rapport aux Non-Big. Pour rétablir la confiance sur les marchés financiers, le législateur français est intervenu via la création d’un organisme de supervision publique de la profession comptable intitulé le H3C. Les résultats empiriques montrent que la création du H3C a renforcé l’indépendance des auditeurs. Par contre, l’annonce du lancement des activités disciplinaires de ce nouvel organisme après 2005 n’a pas d’effet significatif sur l’indépendance des auditeurs. Par contre l’apparition du rapport Bouton en 2002, et la nouvelle dimension accordée au contrôle interne, montre que ce dernier dépendant des caractéristiques des comités d’audit notamment l’expertise et l’indépendance de leurs membres. / At the end of 2001, the scandal series was announced in the US context. Several scandals, especially the Eron failure, were revealed in the first stage by the media. The main purpose of this research is to study the impact of the new reform, in audit after Enron scandal, on auditor independence, audit comity and financial statement credibility. Three operational objectives have been treated in this study. First, we have analyzed the effects of Enron scandal on financial market reaction, auditor choice and auditor conservatism in the French context. Second, we have investigated the impact of the new reform on the auditor independence. Finally, we have examined the effect of audit committee on financial statement credibility after the adoption of the Bouton Report in 2002.The empirical results have shown that the presence of the Non-Big4 members in the legal audit process have minimized the negative effect of the reaction of the SBF 250. However, the perception of the foreign institutional investors has not changed significantly for the Big4 audit services. This auditor group (Big4) does not justify the production of the audit quality compared to other auditors in France. To restore confidence in the financial market, the French legislative authority has created the H3C. The empirical results have revealed that the establishment of the H3C has ameliorated the auditor independence. Hence, the announcement of the launch of H3C disciplinary activity after 2005 has not had a significant effect on auditor independence. In contrast, the appearance of the Bouton Report in 2002 and the reform related to the internal control depend on the audit committee characteristics (expertise and independence audit committee members).

THE EFFECT OF PERSONAL SCANDAL ON CELEBRITY ATHLETES AND SHOPPER’S PURCHASE INTENTIONS AND ATTITUDE FAVORABILITY

Athletes have become more than sports professionals; they are million dollar investments for brand images. Businesses worldwide have transitioned old promotional schemes to athlete endorsements and have experienced positive reactions to the public change. Athletes connected with consumers on a heroic level and translated the brand’s message to purchasers through the theory of transference of affect (White, Goddard, & Wilbur, 2009). Subsequently, there had been an equal rise in the caution businesses exercised as several athletes found occupancy in negative press. Those involved in scandals posed reputational risks for businesses and could reduce positive transference to consumers. The purpose of this study was to test the impact of negative media portrayal (reputation) about athlete endorsers on male consumer’s purchase intentions and attitude favorability towards high or low involvement products. Online surveys were distributed to a Midwestern University, 196 surveys were analyzed. Findings showed purchase intention was affected by reputation for high involvement products; reputation was not an accurate predictor of consumer attitude toward high or low involvement products. Athletes involved in scandals remained effective as endorsers for low involvement products whereas, athletes with positive reputations succeeded when promoting high involvement products.
