A Qualitative Study of Three Urban Catholic High Schools: Investigating Parent and Principal Expectations and Realizations of Parental Involvement and the Parent-School RelationshipHolyk-Casey, Karen Elayne 18 March 2016 (has links) (PDF)
This qualitative study investigated parents’ and principals’ expectations of their roles in the parent-school relationship and how they defined, encouraged, and realized parental involvement within an urban Catholic high school setting. Through pattern analysis and axial coding of the data collected from parents and principal interviews, documents, and observations at parent-school meetings and events, four patterns emerged: (a) the underlying child-centered mission, (b) the parents’ role in supporting the student, (c) the parent-school relationship created to support the student, and (d) the principals’ role in creating a trusting environment that promotes parental involvement. Further analysis was guided by the parental involvement frameworks of Epstein (2001) and Barton, Drake, Perez, St. Louis, and George (2004) and the Catholic school mission. The findings revealed that the child-centered goal guided the parents’ and principals’ expectations of shared responsibilities, although the parents varied in how they defined parental involvement activities. Parents expressed the importance of the school’s role in creating a caring and respectful environment that encouraged a strong parent-school relationship. The principals addressed the Catholic school mission and how they developed the school culture, climate, and environment to support that mission.
This study author concluded that Catholic schools have the opportunity to create strong parent-school relationships that encourage differentiated parental involvement. In addition, she concluded that the role of all schools is to provide a relationship built on trust and the knowledge that parental involvement requires consideration of the varied types of involvement and ways in which parents choose to mediate the types of parental involvement.

As mútuas influências, família-escola, na inclusão escolar de crianças com deficiência visual / Mutual influence, family - school, on the scholar inclusion of children with visual deficiencyBazon, Fernanda Vilhena Mafra 12 February 2009 (has links)
The framework study of this thesis is the understanding of the mutual influence role exerted between family - school , during the scholar inclusion process. The thesis objective is to identify how the process of scholar inclusion of visual deficient child influences his familiar relationship, and reversely, how the family influences the child in the process of scholar inclusion. The familiar relationship and the scholar inclusion process is a highly relevant theme to understand the deficient child development and interaction. Besides being subject of investigations , nothing has been found by consulting pertinent sources related to the mutual influence role over the mentioned theme. The carried out investigation is a broad study over children with blindness or subnormal vision involving four families. The investigation was taken based upon qualitative, descriptive and exploratory approachs by gathering data from the family, professors and specialized institution coordinators. Semi structural interviews were conducted with deficient children, their respective mothers, and specialized institution coordinators. The regular school teachers of these children responded to a questionnaire for data gathering. The written recorded data analysis has made evident the fundamental role of the family - school interaction regarding to the scholar inclusion process. The family cooperative attitude regarding to the school has remarkably favoured this process. At the school side, the opening and availability attitudes, in attendig the visual deficient student, are fundamental elements for the interaction and development of them. The gathered data analysis has brought into light that the familiar dynamics was affected by the visual deficient insertion at school. The familiar dynamics was altered bringing new perspective to the family regarding to the child development, hopes and trust. It was also found that discriminating attitudes, behaving manner restriction and professors inadequate formation, negatively affected the inclusion process. The main concern of this thesis is the educational condition regarding the visual deficient child. To the referred concern was givem a motive for a study involving the family of the visual deficient child. The objective aimed at this study was the understanding and identification of mutual influences as exerted between the school and family in the social and scholar inclusion process. The findings drawn from the searching data lead to a conclusion that the relationship between school and the family, directly influences the student with visual deficiency inclusion in the scholar environment. The relevant relationship between family and school in the inclusion porcess put forward for consideration a study continuity to deeply understand this theme.

Previous issue date: 2018-11-06 / The study commences with the finding - based on the School Census (Censo Escolar Inep/MEC) data in recent years – that there is an ever-increasing rate of enrolment in and expansion of the numbers of private primary and private secondary schools in Brazil, and this trend is equally applicable to the state of São Paulo and the city of Guarulhos. However, there are few studies which focus on the choosing of education within the private education sector in our country, especially with regards to the less wealthy population. It is within this context that the present study aims to understand the strategies which families adopt when choosing a private school in the city of Guarulhos. To this end, nine families, which had enrolled their children in the first year of secondary school in 2017, were selected, since the latter education level had the largest number of enrolments. The methodology followed was the use of semi-structured interviews with the families, which were later analysed and categorised from the standpoint of analysis of the discussion arising out of the interviews. The study showed that the procedure used in selecting an education institution is influenced by the perception of what constitutes a good school, as formed by the various life and social experiences undergone by the families. It was shown that the strategies used by the family group in the selection of a school are limited, since they are adopted as a means of avoiding public schools and are restricted by the family's financial situation.

The Master Dissertation aims at discussing the family-school relationship with regards to mathematics education, more specifically, this relationship in the EMEF Tiradentes, peasant multigrade school located in Novo Hamburgo, municipality of German colonization of the region of Vale do Rio dos Sinos - RS. In a specific way, it examines how the form of life of German colonization of Rio Grande do Sul started in the nineteenth century is intertwined with the form of life of that school; analyzes how, from the pedagogical point of view, that multigrade class of was organized; discusses how the participants described the family relationships with school through the practice of homework, and, about mathematics education in relation to school mathematics homework, identifies as are described by the participants of the language games and practiced by the families and that practiced in the form of school life. The theoretical tools of the study are linked to the field of Ethnomathematics in their intersections with the theories of Michel Foucault and Wittgenstein's ideas which were presented in his book Philosophical Investigations. The research material consists of interviews with seven families linked to EMEF Tiradentes, interview with the teacher of the multigrade class, classroom observation and parents meeting and analysis of documents EMEF Tiradentes. The main research findings indicate that: regarding the practices of EMEF Tiradentes there is no evidence that can relate the life form of German colonization of Rio Grande do Sul with the way of life of EMEF Tiradentes. The grammar of the school mathematics practiced in the class of multisseriate EMEF Tiradentes was consisted of a set of language games marked by writing and present formalism in the use of algorithms; the families described the aid to homework as a major form of family involvement in the educational issues, and was possible to identify family resemblances that approached the mathematical language games practiced by way of school life and the language games practiced by the families when these helped their children with their math homeworks.

PARENT PARTICIPATION IN CURRICULUM DECISION MAKING: A CASE STUDYBeagley, David Edward, d.beagley@latrobe.edu.au January 1996 (has links)
This study is an historical study of parent participation in school level decision making, particularly in curriculum issues, in relation to the Victorian Government policies of Devolution through the 1980s. It was conducted as a case study of one rural secondary school, examining how the role of parents in the schools curriculum development and associated decision making structures may have changed during the decade from the early 1980s to the early 1990s.
Three conceptual models were established, which served as analytical frameworks for the field data: a Theory model of how school level participation could operate, a Policies model deriving from the expectations of the major Government policies of the time, and an Historical model based on research and analyses of practice in Australia and overseas.
The findings indicate that little effective parent participation developed or took place in the school over the period under study. Major contributing factors identified are the lack of policy direction and official mechanisms, especially in implementation of change, the definition of appropriate participant roles, the culture of traditional authorities in education (teacher in the classroom, principal in school processes and bureaucracy in administration), and the local factors of community attitudes and demographic profile.
While the local factors are significant, it is concluded that the policies did not provide sufficient direction or mechanism to overcome the entrenched culture of traditional authorities in schooling. Changes in practice were directed more by the influence of specific personalities in single situations than any development of general attitude or institutional structure.

'This shared parenting we do is difficult to get your head around' : experiences of parents and carers during their child's first year at a residential therapuetic special school : a qualitative studyOnions, Caryn Jane January 2016 (has links)
This research examined the impact on parents and carers of having a child placed at a residential special school for abused, neglected and traumatised primary aged children. The school is developing its work with families and carers, because if relationships at home are improved, children are more likely to benefit from the placement at Stowbury. Although it is the child who is referred, establishing a good working relationship with parents and carers is vital in helping them with their child’s return home. The study focused on parental experiences of the child’s first year at the school, using interviews at the start of placement and then twelve months later. The data were analysed using a comparative thematic analysis at two time points and a secondary narrative analysis. Researcher reflexivity is used and where appropriate the findings are discussed from a psychoanalytic perspective. The analysis found that during the first year the children make positive changes. Birth parents were helped with their parenting, particularly the (re)establishment of parental boundaries. In contrast, some foster carers found it difficult to share the parenting role, and tensions between home and school were identified. Some parents and carers found it difficult to reflect on their role and relationship with their child. In general, parents and carers expected their child to be able to go to mainstream school when they left Stowbury, and after one year some realised that was unlikely. The study concludes that the experience of foster carers could be improved if they were helped to increase their ability to reflect on their parenting role. In addition, sharing the parenting of this group of children can cause tension between parents, carers and staff. There are training implications for the professionals involved. This research makes an original contribution to knowledge about the psychodynamics that develop in the relationships between the parents, carers and staff looking after abused children in a residential school.

This study consists in a qualitative research whose proposal was to investigate how children, in their interactions, give meanings in relation to their belonging to an age group and to other age groups, in school institution, intending to highlight what children think and how are their relationships in a school graded by ages as well how are relationships among groups of children. The following methodological strategies were used: participant observations and collective interviews. Participated of the research 29 (twenty-nine) children between 5 (five) and 9 (nine) years old from CS (Child School) and from BE (Basic Education) of the same school institution, located in Porto Alegre City. The study was made with these two levels of the knowledge process since they present different expectations and educational ends. It can occur dissimilarities between the ways how children of both groups live in school, through the following categories: the time and the school space, the adult centered practices, the rituals and the social meanings in relation to the age, the playing, and the possibilities of relationship among the groups, the age differentiations among children, their protagonisms and the age group while a sub generation. The meaning created by children are presented considering the age belonging, the different practices of the groups determined by the space-time of school as well the statutes they receive in every level of teaching, the protagonisms children perform to guarantee, in school, the child cultures and the problematization of the age as the factor that forms a sub generation.
