A Scientometric Analysis of a Marketing Theoretician: “Good Will Hunting”Zuberi, Mel F. 08 1900 (has links)
Albert Einstein notably asserted that “It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure.” Cast against the backdrop of Einstein’s assertion, the present research critically examines the enduring yet unresolved controversy regarding marketing as a science. Consider that the marketing discipline is nearing its first-century of inception, the Journal of Marketing is approaching its eighth decade of publication, and yet marketing academicians still debate the epistemology of marketing itself. Virtually all theories in marketing are adaptations of theory-development from other social science disciplines. The overarching research mission is to critically review a body of marketing theory using a meta-analytic approach to illuminate gaps in the epistemic foundations of marketing knowledge development. Grounded in the theory of composition, an entire body of Shelby D. Hunt's marketing literature – more than 130 effects encapsulating five of the most widely-cited marketing theoretical streams to date – is critically evaluated. Using scientometric analyses, the impact factors, citation indices, and the domain of references across the allied behavioral science literatures are empirically assessed. An epistemic inquiry to the marketing discipline is the only way that a discipline may be viewed as a science, and its importance lies in this being the way for a discipline to advance in theory and practice. Second, this study seeks to identify a body of theoretical development emanating from the marketing discipline that has been proffered by a single academician. The research aspiration was to potentially link the theoretician to the epistemic process in the marketing discipline. Toward this end, this dissertation empirically explored the impact of three marketing scholars who have the highest number of publications in the Journal of Marketing and compared their scientometric indexes with Shelby D. Hunt’s. Results indicate that Hunt has a higher impact overall compared to the other marketing scholars. Moreover, scientometrics indexes indicate that Hunt also has a profound interdisciplinary impact. In order for marketing to continue to progress and not be marginalized or be fragmented, marketing scholars need to nurture theory generation, development and maintenance. The training of emerging scholars has far-reaching repercussions on these important aspects of the discipline. The doctoral students, therefore, should be treated as immediate learners instead of being considered to be immediate producers, duly encouraging “creative cognitive acts, significantly constrained and reasoned,” to quote Shelby D. Hunt.

The present study addresses the intellectual production of the population of the Faculty of education of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (FACED/UFRGS). Questions which is the representative nature and the impact of this production for the Academy and society, as well as if it is possible to carry out the study in databases not conventionally used in metric studies. Aims to analyze the General intellectual production from FACED/UFRGS deposited between 2000 and 2015 by professors, technical-administrative servers in education and employees in the University Library System. The analysis, structured in the form of four articles, checks the production demand in specific documents, such as journal articles, articles of dissemination in magazines and newspapers and in books. In addition, identified the main characteristics of the production through metric indexes and to characterize the external motivations for this productivity and its implications. Scientometric, micro-level study of aggregation, it analyses the intellectual production of the population of FACED collected in the Aleph Software, from 2000 to 2015. From the total of intellectual production, which contains 15,254 records, 10% correspond to journal articles and more than 18% to publications in books. Scientific articles correspond to less than 1% of the total production. Finally, it was analyzed the production growth rates in journals, noting that there was not an growth or migration to scientific journals in the study population. It is discussed the possibility of using library catalogs as sources for metric studies; the common results between the articles, representing the area of study; and the biases and limitations that any database features. It is concluded that the study was possible to be accomplished by having the data collection performed in alternative database. It is also concluded that the evaluation should consider the difference between the areas of knowledge, highlighting the peculiarities of each area. This study provides the approach of theory with practice. Finally, it is hoped that this study will be useful to FACED in strategic planning.

Previous issue date: 2015-08-10 / Cataracts are the leading cause of reversible blindness worldwide. It is
estimated that currently about 20 million people are blind due to cataract, and this
number is expected to grow with increasing life expectancy of the world population.
Any opacity in the crystalline lens that causes light scattering and damage to vision is
considered cataract. In this paper we conducted a survey and characterization of
scientific literature on genetic polymorphisms in the various types of cataracts. The
"Scopus" platform was used for the survey of articles and reviews. The analyzed data
showed a growing number of publications on the subject in recent years; there is a
large concentration of papers among the countries that publish on polymorphisms in
cataracts, as well as the authors and institutions. One single journal (Molecular
Vision) accounted for almost 35% of publications on the subject, and also an article
stood out for the high impact factor of the journal in which it was published. We
conclude that there is a growing interest about genetic polymorphisms of cataract,
with a significant increase in research and publications, envisioning a future control of
expression of these genes, in order to control the aging of the lens and dominate the
emergence of cataract in individuals. / !

Previous issue date: 2016-06-24 / Preeclampsia is an exclusive pathology of pregnancy, characterized by hypertension associated with proteinuria. It occurs after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Its
prevalence is 8% in singleton pregnancies and 14% in twin pregnancies. It has an
unknown etiology up to date. It is currently accepted that genetic factors are important
in the development of preeclampsia due to the increased risk in women with family
history of preeclampsia, with a history of preeclampsia in a previous pregnancy and on
those with partners whose mothers or previous partner have a history of preeclampsia.
Preeclampsia figures as the main cause of maternal mortality in Brazil and for this
reason, its study is of great interest to public health. The objective of this study was to
identify the scientific publications about on preeclampsia and possible associations with
genetic alterations during the period of 2005-2015, in the Scopus platform. Different
approaches were carried out to evaluate the articles, using as a method, scientometrics.
As a result, we observed a significant increase in research and publications on
polymorphism in preeclampsia, with a prevalence of authors, publications and
institutions of developed countries and a significant association of 45 polymorphisms of
genes with preeclampsia.
We observed that polymorphisms of genes and the relationship between them is not
clear and needs further studies to obtain more results that are consistent.

Previous issue date: 2016-06-23 / Ionizing radiation, when interacting with matter, removes an electron from its orbital and
generates ions or ionized particles. When an individual is exposed to ionizing radiation,
reversible or irreversible harms to the body may arise, depending basically on the exposure
time, level of injury, and absorbed dose. This study aimed to characterize the scientific
literature on genetic damage caused by ionizing radiation, from 1970 to 2014, in order to
verify trends and prospects of scientific development through scientometric analysis. This was
accomplished through a literature search on the site Scopus® using the keywords "ionizing
radiation” AND mutation AND effects AND human. Different approaches of paper assessment
were carried out: type of publication, number of articles/year, number of publications per
journal, organisms and conditions discussed in the studies. As a result, there was an increase
in the number of publications related to DNA (Deoxyribonuclei acid) damage and ionizing
radiation over the years. Most of the work was developed by authors from the US. Most
papers correlated their findings to cancer development. It was also observed that there was an
increase in the number of publications over the years, leading to the conclusion that there is
interest in the study of DNA damage caused by ionizing radiation, since this damage may be
responsible for numerous adverse biological effects on human health.
palavras-chave "ionizing radiation” AND mutation AND effects AND human.
A maior

Artigos científicos em medicina no Brasil: prospectiva de autorias em colaboração / Scientific papers in Medicine in Brazil: Prospective of collaborative authorshipsTaruhn, Rosane 25 March 2014 (has links)
This thesis deals with the scientific communication process, with a focus on co-authoring and collaboration for publication of papers, or scientific articles, in journals. The authors are the permanent members of the Postgraduate Programs (PPGs) in Medicine, in Brazil, evaluated with the maximum score (seven) by the evaluation of the higher education system of CAPES, in the triennium 2007-09 , the penultimate date of the reported results. The PPGs were identified and their permanent members as well as the context of the performance of these collaborative networks by means of this information in the Programs and Proposals Sheets at CAPES evaluation site. With the aid of the software tool ScriptLattes, quantitative analysis was performed in co-authorship articles recorded in the Curriculum Lattes, of the National Council of Research of Brazil (CNPq), through graphs and analytical data obtained from studies of co-authorship networks in qualitative analysis. Also under this type of analysis was created and sent a questionnaire via the Web, through the software SurveyMonkey to 272 permanent members of the Programs and answered by 81 of them, with the advice of the Center for Applied Statistics of the Institute of Mathematics, University of São Paulo (ECA -IME - USP). In the questionnaires was verified ways to get information and demonstrated the prevalence of specialized databases, CAPES Portal Journals and references in articles read. For registration information for papers, the computer is the most used way being cited the automatic management of references by programs. So the email is the communication médium most used, but video conferencing and the Web space has already obtained some punctuation. Asked about the difficulty in communication or not to write papers in collaboration, the authors revealed that it flows easily, with some additional free comments. The choice of particular channels of communication and / or journals for publication occurs mainly due to the impact factor of the publication, as well as the area of specialization, reputation of the title and previous experience. To disseminate the articles published, the Curriculum Lattes, ResearchID, MyCitations and websites are preferred. Several authors also considered the costs to publish could be the responsibility of development agencies, the government, the department where they work and / or the authors themselves. Regarding open access, the perception is that someone always has to pay the bill\", it seemed not to be a great concern for copyright. In turn, the information management processes are adopted as contained in the Proposals for CAPES, where are described library systems structures, distance learning, to promote functionality visibility of their actions and results, as well as social integration and solidarity. Knowledge management is also a present factor according to the responses obtained in the Proposals and descriptions of PPGs. Among respondents, 77 % supported the real importance of the Web in the current process of Science Communication in Medicine in Brazil. Its concluded with a design of contemporary social and scientific communication process.

Scientometric study of descriptive nature about the structure and dynamics of scientific production activities in the area of health sciences in Brazil, that through the identification of specific characteristics pointed out signs that represent different degrees of vitality. From the analysis of 117 521 articles published between 1987 and 2011 in journals indexed by Medline bibliographic database, characteristics of vitality were identified in each of the 27 states of the federation. Assuming that the vitality of science can be identified by specific characteristics regarding productivity of authors, institutions longevity, thematic diversity and distribution channels, we identified many disparities between states. Analyses of production by state indicated that São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro are the absolute leaders in national scientific production. In the opposite dimension we find the states of Amapá and Roraima, in which the proportions of articles published were 0.02% of the total. With regard to institutions, the states that occupied middle positions in the hierarchy of production were not exactly the same regarding amount of research institutions. Especially Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba and Sergipe, which showed more favorable position on the amount of articles than institutions, and Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná, Mato Grosso do Sul, Piauí e Rondônia, which with less institutions produced more. Regarding periodicals, most of the articles were published in foreign journals, and the states of Southeast and South regions have a greater diversity of titles, meaning that institutions of these regions have greater international insertion. The main thematic scopes of articles include the areas of biological sciences, tropical medicine, public health, parasitology, cardiology and psychiatry. Regarding authorship, it can be stated that there are collaborative characteristics in healthcare, as more than 48% of the articles were shared among four, five and six authors. The average rate of geometric growth of scientific production during the 25 years analyzed was 16.02%. The degree of inequality in scientific production between different regions of the country decreases over the period. The difference between regions decreased significantly, indicating that regions that showed a low production in the early years, were gradually approaching the most productive ones, reducing inequalities. However, much remains to be produced to reach more balanced levels. The possibility of analyzing the vitality of a scientific field from the analysis of their structures and dynamics was demonstrated in this study, revealing that, in the area of health sciences in Brazil, the scientific vitality is located in the states of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Rio Grande do Sul.

This research general aim is to survey thematically the defended thesis on Physical Education PhD Programme from 1994 to 2008. The specific aims are: to feature the PPGEF (Physical Education Postgraduate Programme) which have PhD course related to the year they have been created and its particular areas, research lines and amount of thesis defended; to identify the key-words used in the thesis; to identify the thesis subjects and relate it to its particular areas and research lines which were produced. The research corpus is composed for 333 thesis defended on six programmes: Universidade de São Paulo, Universidade Gama Filho, Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Universidade Estadual Paulista and Universidade Católica de Brasília. The nature of research is to explore and the data analysis were made from scientometrics techniques proving that the programmes are organized in twelve particular areas and 42 research lines that present a way of organizing around two areas ( biodynamics and culture) . The work indentified 733 key-words , mentioned 1073 times. From the total, 604 words appear only once and the others more than once pointing out dispersion of terms and those are close of a natural speech. It shows the lack of specific language of the area. The survey pointed the dominance of the following subjects: Physical/Sportive Training (12,9%), Biomechanics (8,7%) Physical Activity/Sportive to special groups (8,4%); Teacher Training/Physical Education and curriculum (8,1%); Physiology (7,5%); Sociology (6,6%) e Physical Education in school / sportive school (6,3%). It shows that there is a good coherence between the themes mentioned, specific areas and research lines, even though there is a big amount of research lines that present low production and that, because its range, nestle a theme dispersion.
