Evolução do sistema plantio direto e produção de sedimentos no Rio Grande do Sul / No-Till System evolution and sediment yield in Rio Grande do Sul

Conciliar as crescentes demandas da produção agrícola com a garantia da produtividade do solo exige decisões rápidas e apoiadas em informação confiável acerca de impactos esperados. Compreender o efeito de grandes dinâmicas de alteração do uso do solo sustenta decisões futuras quanto à implementação de práticas sustentáveis de manejo. O presente estudo objetivou avaliar a dinâmica da produção de sedimentos no Rio Grande do Sul em conseqüência da evolução do plantio direto a partir da modelagem em larga escala de dados secundários acesso público. Primeiramente, a validade da aplicação de um modelo de predição de erosão em larga escala foi testada no estado de São Paulo com variáveis exógenas relativas a bacias hidrográficas. À exceção da adoção de práticas de conservação, os demais fatores da Equação Universal de Perda de Solo foram calculados e espacializados em Sistemas de Informações Geográficas. Os dados de perda de solo foram combinados com parâmetros ligados a forma das bacias hidrográficas, sua declividade, a ocorrências de represamentos e matas ciliares; e usados como variáreis explicativas da carga de sedimentos nos rios através de modelos de regressão multivariada. A produção de sedimentos foi correlacionada à perda de solo estimada e à presença de grandes reservatórios nos terços inferiores das bacias (R²=0,55). Na aplicação do modelo testado, a perda de solo esteve diretamente relacionada ao uso da terra, concentrando altas taxas de erosão nas áreas ocupadas por agricultura de cultivos anuais. A partir da comprovação do método, este pôde ser utilizado na avaliação do efeito da mudança no manejo do solo em larga escala ocorrida no Rio Grande do Sul a partir da década de 80. Impulsionado por uma complexa estrutura social favorável, o Sistema Plantio Direto (SPD) foi amplamente adotado no estado. O fator cobertura do solo, que engloba uso e manejo foi obtido através dos Censos Agropecuários e monitoramentos estaduais da área de SPD dos anos de 1985, 1996 e 2006. Vinte e nove bacias hidrográficas foram determinadas a partir de estações sedimentométricas e separadas em agrícolas e de pastagem. A proporção de área agrícola determina o efeito do SPD no controle da erosão na bacia. A produção de sedimentos não variou nas áreas com pastagem e foi menor que a produção nas bacias agrícolas nos anos de 1985 e 1996. Nas áreas agrícolas, a produção de sedimentos diminuiu em 1996 e em 2006, quando se igualou à produção das bacias com pastagem. A adoção do SPD apresentou uma redução média na carga de sedimentos de 82%, valor próximo da redução das taxas de erosão testada em experimentos com plantio direto. O método sugerido permitiu a compreensão da distribuição espacial da erosão e sua dinâmica temporal em função do uso da terra. Modelos como este podem subsidiar a tomada de decisão, com potencial para avaliação de serviços ambientais fornecidos pelos agricultores, ferramentas determinantes na disseminação de práticas conservacionistas. / Reconcile the increasing demands of agricultural production with the assurance of soil productivity requires quick decisions and supported by reliable information about the expected impact. Understand the effect of large dynamic change of land use maintains future decisions regarding the implementation of sustainable agricultural management practices. This study aimed to evaluate the dynamics of sediment production in Rio Grande do Sul in consequence of the no-till evolution by large scale modeling with easily accessible data. First, the validity of applying a predictive model of erosion on a large scale was tested in the state of Sao Paulo with exogenous variables related to watersheds. Except for the adoption of conservation practices, all factors of Universal Equation of Soil Loss (USLE) were calculated and spatialized in Geographic Information Systems. The soil loss data were combined with parameters related to the shape of river basins, its slope, the occurrence of dams and riparian areas, and used as explanatory variables of the load of sediment in rivers through multivariate regression models. The sediment yield was correlated with the estimated soil loss and the presence of large reservoirs in the lower thirds of the basins (R² = 0.55). In applying the model tested, the soil loss was directly related to land use, focusing high rates of erosion in areas occupied by annual crops. From the proof of the method, this might be used in evaluating the effect of large scale changes in soil management occurred in Rio Grande do Sul from the 80s. Driven by a complex social structure, the no-till system (NT) has been widely adopted in the state. The soil cover factor, which includes the use and management, was obtained through the state Agricultural Censuses and monitoring of the area of SPD of the years 1985, 1996 and 2006. Twenty-nine watersheds were determined from sediment stations and separated into agricultural and pasture. The proportion of agricultural area determines the effect of the NT to control erosion in the basin. The sediment yield did not vary in areas with pasture and was lower than production in the agricultural basin in the years 1985 and 1996. In agricultural areas, the sediment production declined in 1996 and 2006, when it equaled the production of watersheds with pasture. The adoption of the NT showed an average reduction in sediment load of 82%, a value close to the reduction of soil erosion rates tested in experiments with tillage. The suggested method allowed the spatial understanding of the spatial distribution of erosion and its temporal dynamics as a function of land use. Models like this can support the decision-making, with potential for assessing environmental services provided by farmers, determinant tools in the spread of conservation practices.

Deriva litorânea e evolução da linha de costa no sul do Espírito Santo (Brasil) / Longshore drift and shoreline evolution in southern Espírito Santo (Brazil)

A deriva litorânea é estudada no litoral sul do Espírito Santo através de diferentes técnicas: distribuição de Minerais Pesados (MP); modelo conceitual Análise de Transport de Sedimento (Sediment Trend Analysis - STA), através da variação de parâmetros texturais do sedimento; dados de clima de onda entre 1997 e 2010 do modelo global WaveWatch III propagados para a zona costeira através do modelo Delft-3D, fornecendo parâmetros necessários para as equações de deriva; e imagens de satélite e fotografias aéreas para avaliar a variação espaço-temporal da morfologia costeira. O modelo STA mostrou-se confiável apenas nos dois setores ao norte, enquanto nos demais os resultados foram mascarados por altos teores de MP e/ou carbonato e a entrada de outras fácies no sistema; as equações representaram bem a variação da morfologia costeira na área de estudos. De maneira geral, os setores ao sul apresentaram transporte longitudinal para sul, e os setores ao norte, para norte, fato relacionado à batimetria local. A orientação da linha de costa auxiliou na compreensão dos fenômenos erosivos, pois em sua maioria estão orientados no sentido NEN, formando 45º com as ondas dos setores de ESE e SE. / Longshore drift is studied in the southern portion of Espírito Santo through different techniques: Heavy Minerals (HM) distribution; the conceptual model Sediment Trend Analysis (STA) by sediment textural parameters fluctuation; wave climate data between 1997 and 2010 from WaveWatch III propagated to the coastal zone through Delft-3D model, providing the required data for longshore drift equations; and satellite images and aerial photograph to survey time-space coastline variations. The STA model appears to be trustworthy only within the northern sectors, as high HM and/or carbonate content and different facies input into the system may mask the results. Broadly speaking, the southern sectors showed longshore transport southward, while northern sectors showed northward longshore transport, which is related to local bathymetry. Shoreline azimuth helped understanding the location of erosive zones, since most of them are turned NEN, 45o with ESE and SE wave sectors.

Sedimentology and Stratigraphy of the Middle Jurassic Preuss Sandstonein Northern Utah and Eastern Idaho

The purpose of this study is to analyze the sedimentology and stratigraphy of the Middle Jurassic Preuss Sandstone and re-evaluate past sedimentological interpretations. The Preuss is located in northern Utah, western Wyoming and eastern Idaho and is stratigraphically equivalent to the Entrada Sandstone, which is Callovian in age (Dossett et al., 2014). This study is the first attempt at 1) a sequence stratigraphic framework, 2) a petroleum system analysis and 3) an extraterrestrial analog study for the Preuss. This study frames the Preuss within three broad facies groups: marine, coastal and terrestrial. The marine group includes the open marine and restricted marine facies with associated subfacies, the coastal group includes coastal sabkha and associated subfacies, and the terrestrial group includes alluvial, inland sabkha and eolian facies with associated subfacies. Three sections in northern Utah and one section in eastern Idaho compromise the focus of this study. The three Utah sections were measured and described, and samples were collected from two Utah sections and the Idaho section. The Preuss Sandstone was deposited in an asymmetrical retroarc basin, consequently the Preuss thickens from the east towards west-central Utah and the Jurassic Elko highlands. The deposits are mostly terrestrial, which is in accord with recent sedimentological interpretations, but at odds with the old paradigm, which postulates that the Entrada and Preuss were largely tidal in origin. There are marine transgressions within the trough of the retroarc basin, and the transgressions affect terrestrial sedimentary patterns. During marine incurstions, alluvium shed off the highlands is confined west of the seaway, and does not prograde east of the trough until all the available accommodation is filled. The Preuss was deposited during a complete third-order sequence-stratigraphic cycle that lies within the Lower Zuni II second-order lowstand. The Preuss Sandstone can be used as an outcrop analog for ancient and modern environments both here on Earth and on other planetary bodies. The petroliferous Norphlet Formation along the U.S. Gulf Coast was deposited in an environment very similar to the Preuss, but the Waltherian succession of facies might be slightly different. Likewise, the facies present in the Preuss are analogous to modern arid environments, such as the Persian Gulf. Furthermore, the alluvial, sabkha, eolian and shallow marine facies of the Preuss are highly similar to facies observed in ancient Martian environments and modern environments on Saturn's moon, Titan.

The Effects of Sediment Properties on Barrier Island Morphology and Processes: A Numerical Modeling Experiment

Barrier island restoration and nourishment is necessary for sustaining coastal systems worldwide. In the Mississippi River Delta Plain, the lack of sediment supply, relative sea level rise, and reworking of abandoned delta lobes promote rapid disintegration of barriers, which can contribute to mainland storm impacts. Barrier island restorations that utilize higher quality sediments (Outer Continental Shelf- OCS) are expected to exhibit higher resiliency, withstanding coastal erosion, event-induced erosion, and ongoing transgression when compared to barriers nourished using lower quality nearshore (NS) sands. Additionally, use of OCS sediments increases sediment supply by adding material to the system supporting increased barrier longevity by maintaining a subaerial footprint longer compared to NS sediments. We used the Delft3D modeling suite to study barrier geomorphic trajectories nourished using OCS/NS sands, compared with control simulations with no nourishment. Resulting morphologies from 18 simulations with forcing that included annualized forcing, storms, and SLR are evaluated and compared.

A Novel Approach to Flow and Sediment Transport Estimation in Estuaries and Bays

Reliable estimates of river discharge and sediment transport to the ocean from large tidal rivers are vital for water resources management, efficient river and harbor management, navigational purposes, and climate analyses. Due to the difficulties inherent in measuring tidal-river discharge, hydrological and sedimentological records are typically too short to adequately characterize long-term (decadal) trends. Also, uncertainties associated with observation and calibration of hydrological models suggest a need for more accurate methods based on longer records of hydrodynamic parameters (e.g. tides). Tidal theory indicates that tides and river discharge interact through quadratic bed friction, which diminishes and distorts the tidal wave as discharge increases. In this study, using tidal constituents, astronomical forcing and a model of the frictional interaction of flow and tides, I propose a novel Tidal Discharge Estimate (TDE) to predict freshwater discharge with an approximate averaging interval of 18 days for time periods with tidal data but no river flow records. Next, using continuous wavelet analysis of tidal properties, I develop a method of estimating river discharge using tides measured on multiple gages along tidal rivers to improve the time-resolution and accuracy of TDE. The applicability of the Multiple-gauge Discharge Estimate (MTDE) is first demonstrated in the two largest tidal-fluvial systems of the Pacific Northwest, the Columbia River Estuary (CRE) and Fraser River Estuary (FRE). A numerical model of an idealized estuary with similar forcing as the FRE and CRE is next run under different hydrologic and morphologic scenarios to evaluate the effect of convergence, friction, and river flow variations on the applicability of MTDE. The TDE method was applied to the San Francisco Bay, using the continuous hourly tide record available since 1858. Results show that TDE reproduces known San Francisco (SF) Bay delta inflows from 1930-present with a Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient of 0.81 and is a useful method for hindcasting historical flows from 1858 - 1929, a period that predates direct measurement of delta discharge. I also recover and digitize ~80 years of Sacramento River daily water level data between 1849 and 1946, from which river discharge to SF Bay is estimated on a daily basis, after adjusting for changes to the river channel. This discharge combined with Net Delta Outflow Index estimates (1930 - 2011) and flow estimates from tidal data (1858 - 2011) provides a more accurate version of SF Bay historic daily inflows from 1849 - 2011. Next, the history of sediment transport and discharge into SF Bay from 1849-present is reevaluated using the daily discharge estimates. A non-stationary rating curve between river flow and sediment transport is developed, with net sedimentation observed during five bathymetric surveys that were used to constrain the total integrated sediment discharge. Results show that ~1600±320 million-tons of sediment have been delivered to SF Bay between 1850 and 2011. There has been an approximately 25 - 30% reduction of annual flow since the 19th century, along with decreased sediment supply. This has resulted in a ~60% reduction in annual sediment delivery to SF Bay. The annual hydrograph of inflow to SF Bay and the seasonality of sediment flux have changed considerably over time, due to both human alteration and climate change. Significant historic spring-melt peak floods have disappeared in the modern system and now peak flows mostly occur in winter. My flow estimation methods also confirm that the flood of January 1862 had the largest daily sediment load and the second largest daily discharge since 1849.

Eco-sedimentological environments of an inter-tidal reef platform, Warraber Island, Torres Strait

This thesis examines functional relationships between the morphologic, hydrodynamic, ecological and sedimentological characteristics of the Warraber reef platform, an inter-tidal reef island system, Central Torres Strait, Australia (10[degrees] 12??? S, 142 [degrees] 49??? E). Hydrodynamic and sediment-transport experiments were conducted on the reef flat using current meters, water level recorders and directional sediment traps. Results showed dominantly SE flows during the dry season and more variable NW to SE flows during the wet season. Topography and reefal water levels modulated the direction and strength of currents and the generation of wind-waves on the reef flat as well as the passage of waves over the reef rim. These hydrodynamic conditions are sufficient to induce significant transport of moderately fast to slow settling sediment (&gt-5.25 symbol psi) on the reef flat, though the platform as a whole is a relatively closed transport system. Carbonate production was estimated based on the key ecological variables of live assemblage distribution and cover. Overall, only 24% of the reef flat was occupied by carbonate-producing organisms. The average estimated carbonate-production rate for the reef was 1.6 kgm -2y-1 (0.07-4.37 kgm-2y-1). Production is dominated by coral (73%), with subordinate proportions contributed by coralline algae (19%). And molluscs, foraminifera and Halimeda (&lt4%) though actual reef-flat sediments did not reflect this potential. Instead, they were dominated by molluscs (35-55%), coralline algae (16-26%), coral (8-13%), Halimeda (7-8%) and foraminifera (5-10%). Differential rates of carbonate to sediment conversion meant the reef-platform sediments were more closely related to the cover of live organisms than to the contribution of carbonate production by each parent organism. The settling properties of the least altered particles of the five commonest constituents were measured and these provided the basis for an eco-sedimentological model of the reef-platform system. Modelled textures were compared to the actual textures, indicating the degree of textural alteration resulting from a combination of biological and physical processes, including sediment production, hydraulic sorting and mechanical breakdown. This analysis, integrated with the hydrodynamic, exposure and other data, was used to determine reef-platform surface-sediment sources, sinks and transport pathways. In using both the textual and constituent compositional properties of sediments, as well as information on local biological and physical processes, the model approach developed offers progress towards an integrative, interdisciplinary analysis of carbonate environments.

The relatively understudied intermediate waters of the world have been implicated as an important part of the global ocean circulation. This thesis discusses the intermediate waters of the Pacific over space and time. Initially, by using geochemical tracers to look at the present distribution, sources and mixing of the water masses. Secondly, by using oxygen and carbon isotopes from sediment cores to study changes in Antarctic Intermediate Waters (AAIW) over the late Quaternary in the north Tasman Sea. The sediment cores also provide sedimentological data on the hemipelagic sedimentation in the Capricorn Channel in the southern Great Barrier Reef as well information on changes in the East Australian surface current (EAC) over the last glacial-interglacial transition. Diatoms as indicators of Holocene climate and environmental change in northern Sweden

<p>The objective of the thesis was to explore the potential of diatoms (<i>Bacillariophyceae</i>) as indicators of Holocene climate and environmental change in northern Sweden (Abisko region, 68°21'N, 18°49'E). A modern surface-sediment calibration set including 100 lakes was developed and lake-water pH, sedimentary organic content (assessed by loss-on-ignition) and temperature were identified as most powerful environmental variables explaining the variance within the diatom assemblages. Transfer functions based on unimodal species response models (WA-PLS) were developed for lake-water pH and mean July air temperature (July T), yielding coefficients of determination of 0.77 and 0.70, and prediction errors based on leave-one-out cross-validation of 0.19 pH units and 0.96 °C for lake-water pH and July T, respectively. The transfer functions were validated with monitoring data covering two open-water seasons (lake-water pH) and meteorological records covering the 20th century (July T). The good agreement between diatom-based inferences and measured monitoring data confirmed the prediction ability of the developed transfer functions. </p><p>Analysing a Holocene sediment core from a lake nearby Abisko (Vuoskkujávri), diatoms infer a linearly decreasing July T trend (1.5 °C) since 6,000 cal. BP, which compares well with inferences based on chironomids and pollen from the same sediment core. The lake-water pH inference shows a pattern of moderate natural acidification (c. 0.5 pH units) since the early Holocene, reaching present-day pH values at c. 5,000 cal. BP. By fitting fossil diatom samples to the modern calibration set by means of residual distance assessment within canonical correspondence analysis (CCA), the early Holocene (between 10,600 and 6,000 cal. BP) was identified as a problematic time-period for diatom-based inferences and, consequently, reconstructions during this period are tentative. Pollen-based inferences also show 'poor' fit between 10,600 and 7,500 cal. BP and chironomids probably provide the most reliable July T reconstruction at Vuoskkujávri, with 'poor' fit only during the initial part of the Holocene (between 10,600 and 10,250 cal. BP). </p><p>Possible factors confounding diatom-based July T inferences were investigated. Using detrended CCA (DCCA), Holocene sediment sequences from five lakes indicate that during the early Holocene, mainly physical factors such as high minerogenic erosion rates, high temperature and low light availability may have regulated diatom assemblages, favouring <i>Fragilaria</i> species. In all five lakes, diatom assemblages developed in a directional manner, but timing and scale of development differed substantially between lakes. The differences are attributed primarily to the geological properties of the lake catchments (with strong effects on lake-water pH), but other factors such as climatic change, vegetation, hydrologic setting and in-lake processes appear to regulate diatom communities in each lake differently. The influence of long-term natural acidification on diatom assemblages progressively declined during the Holocene with corresponding increase of the influence of climatic factors.</p>

<p>This thesis contributes to the understanding of glacier response to climate change by ice dynamical studies on Storglaciären, Sweden, and Bonnevie-Svendsenbreen, Kibergbreen and Plogbreen in Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica. Ice surface velocities, ice geometry and temperature information is fed through a force budget model to calculate ice mass outflux of these glacial systems via three-dimensional stress distributions for a flux-gate. </p><p>Field data were collected through repeated DGPS and GPR observations on Storglaciären between July 2000 to September 2001 and on Kibergbreen and Plobreen during the SWEDARP 2002/03 expedition to Antarctica. The work was strongly supported by remotely-sensed information.</p><p>The results from Storglaciären show a strength in the force budget model to discern both spatial and temporal variability in ice dynamical patterns. It highlights the influence of seasonality and bedrock topography upon glacier flow. A modeling experiment on Bonnevie-Svendsenbreen suggested that ice temperature increases substantially under conditions of high stress (≥0.4 MPa) due to strain-heating. This provides a positive feedback loop, increasing ice deformation, as long as it overcomes the advection of cool ice from the surface. These results explain, to some extent, the mechanism behind fast flowing ice streams. Mass flux caclulations from Bonnevie-Svendsenbreen suggest that the outflux given from force budget calculations can be used as a gauge for influx assuming steady state conditions. Plogbreen receives an influx of 0.48±0.1 km<sup>3</sup> a<sup>-1</sup> and expedites a discharge volume of 0.55±0.05 km<sup>3</sup> a<sup>-1</sup>. This indicative negative mass balance is explained by a falling trend in upstream accumulation and the recent rise in global sea level, as it is likely to induce glacier acceleration due to a reduction in resistive forces at the site of the gate. This result is comparable with other Antarctic studies reporting negative mass balances, e.g. from WAIS, as caused by changes in the global atmospheric circulation pattern.</p>

Lobjectif de cette thèse est la reconstitution des changements climatiques quaternaires à partir de critères sédimentologiques en milieu lacustre. Il sagit entre autre dutiliser les sédiments saisonniers comme un outil de datation précis pour calibrer les reconstitutions paléoclimatiques. Cette démarche permet de mieux comprendre lorigine et/ou la propagation dévénements chauds ou froids générés soit dans lhémisphère Nord, soit dans lhémisphère Sud. Le Lac Baïkal (Sibérie) et le Lac Puyehue (Sud du Chili) contribuent à établir des nouvelles connexions climatiques. Un volet important de la thèse concerne le développement dune méthode nouvelle pour détecter les sédiments laminés saisonniers dans les carottages. La méthode consiste à imprégner les sédiments argileux avec des polymères après avoir préalablement lyophilisé le matériel. Ce travail permet de montrer : (i) que la résolution des reconstitutions paléoclimatiques réalisées à partir des sédiments du Lac Baïkal peut être augmentée, à condition de calibrer le signal sédimentaire ainsi que la chronologie du 14C ; (ii) quil est possible de reconstituer lévolution des précipitations et des réponses de type El Niño à partir des sédiments lacustres du Sud du Chili ; (iii) que la chronologie des événements climatiques de la transition Pléistocène/Holocène est plus complexe, et les épisodes chauds/froids plus nombreux que précédemment décrits ; (iv) que les archives lacustres permettent de compléter les connexions climatiques entre les deux hémisphères.
