A support programme for the gifted boy who underachieves in the secondary school

Roos, Christina Alida 01 1900 (has links)
Volgehoue bemoeienis met die opvoedeling lei tot noukeurige evaluering van die leerder, asook van die hulpverleningsprogram / This study deals with a support programme for the gifted boy who underachieves in the secondary school Research shows that more boys than girls experience these problems and consequently their full potential is not realised. Hence the focus on an effective assistance and support programme. Literary studies show that many existing support programmes target the primary school pupils and that South Afiican support programmes are limited. The aim of the study focuses on assistance to the gifted adolescent boy who underachieves, through an interdisciplinary team approach. The two questionnaires facilitate identification of the unique problems and needs of the child and focus on his totality. The Accumulative BINGO Plan chart contains suggestions for assistance. Support is intensive on a one-to-one basis and must be according to orthodidactic and orthopedagogical principles. Continuous involvement with the educand leads to an accurate evaluation of the learner and the support programme. / Educational Studies / M. Ed. (Orthopedagogiek)

An educational-psychological perspective of the personal attributes which serve to anchor resilience

MacFarlane, L. C. (Linda Carol) 11 1900 (has links)
This study focuses on the concept of resilience, and seeks to determine the nature, and role, of personal attributes in adolescents' ability to bounce back from life's blows, and continue determinedly along the path of self-actualisation. The personal attributes impacting on the ability to surmount life's challenges are delineated by an empirical study focussing on twenty learning-disabled adolescents, half of whom demonstrate resilience, and half of whom appear to have turned their backs on self-actualisation. The study aims to provide educational psychologists with an in-depth understanding of the phenomenon of resilience, so that vulnerable youngsters might ultimately be therapeutically assisted to choose a more resilient attitude and behaviour. The results of the study delineate nine definite personal attributes which anchor resilience and promote self-actualisation, despite obstacle-ridden circumstances. Furthermore, results suggest that personal choice underlies resilience, implying that intervention targeted at inculcating resilience may well be a worthwhile exercise. / Psychology of Education / M.Ed.(Guidance and Counselling)

Exploring the contribution of spiritual intelligence to leadership in the public sector

Kheswa, Gcina Elliot 20 January 2016 (has links)
Text in English / The aim of this research was to explore the contribution spiritual intelligence has made to leadership in the public sector; in an effort to encourage further debates about the legitimacy of spiritual intelligence in the workplace. The research design followed in this study is qualitative. The target population of this study were the leaders of the Free State Department of Education who have had self-acknowledged spiritual intelligence experience in their leadership context. The construct `spiritual intelligence` is a relatively complex phenomenon; hence the participants were recruited through a snowball sampling technique. The findings of this study revealed that spiritual intelligence contributes to leadership in the public sector. This study revealed that there is an association between leadership and spirituality and spiritual intelligence according to the subjective views of the participants. This suggests that researchers need to recognise the core component of internal development of leaders. The research attempted to bring about this type of awareness into the corporate world, and hopefully a valuable contribution will be made to future leadership attitudes, leadership styles, and working environment. / Psychology / D. The Relationship between Metacognition, Self-Actualization, and Well-Being among University Students: Reviving Self-Actualization as the Purpose of Education

Amir Kiaei, Yalda 28 March 2014 (has links)
This non-experimental, correlational study (N = 513) examined the relationships among self-actualization, well-being, and metacognition. Need-satisfaction and non-defensiveness were also tested as mediators in the relationship between metacognition and self-actualization. A battery of paper-and-pencil self-report measures was administered to a sample of undergraduate and graduate students in a public university in South Florida. Correlational and hierarchical regression analyses and structural equation modeling for mediational analysis were used to test the hypotheses. The results largely supported the hypotheses with only a few exceptions. Students who demonstrated higher level of self-actualization experienced higher well-being as well (the result of this hypothesized relationship was equivocal for parent students, n = 61). Moreover, need-satisfaction and non-defensiveness were found to be significantly and positively associated with self-actualization, providing preliminary supporting evidence for Maslow’s (1968) and Rogers’ (1951, 1961) theories of self-actualization. In addition, students with higher levels of general metacognitive competence were more likely to demonstrate higher level of need-satisfaction, non-defensiveness, self-actualization, and well-being (the result of the third hypothesized relationship was equivocal for female immigrant education students, n = 78). Further, metacognition and need-satisfaction, and metacognition and non-defensiveness shared common variance in predicting self-actualization. The relationship between metacognition and self-actualization was mediated by need-satisfaction and non-defensiveness, except for non-education students (n = 201), for whom no mediational effect was detected by non-defensiveness. In sum, the findings imply that general metacognitive competence, which can be taught as a set of skills, theoretically contributes to students’ self-actualization and well-being. This study provides support for a conceptual model of self-actualization, which introduces this phenomenon as a goal-oriented process that is essential to students’ well-being and can be attained by exercising metacognition. The discussion of the findings highlights implications of this study for theory, research, and practice as a guide for scholars, researchers, and practitioners in the field of education and psychology.

O impacto de variáveis do trabalho na autorrealização / Not informed by the author

Alexandre Pellaes 24 April 2018 (has links)
However, the focus has been on technological and commercial issues, with little interest for human relations and man\'s understanding of his own actualization. Discussions about the role of work, its meaning and purpose have awakened the search for knowledge about mechanisms of satisfaction of human needs through productive action. New ways of working have demanded an increase in autonomy and individuality in the execution of task. This study relies on Maslows (1954) concept of Self-actualization and aims to identify personal information and historical professional profile and work preferences that will connect and correlate with on statistical basis with the SISA Short Index of Self Actualization. Quantitative data was gathered through online questionnaire applied in the first half of 2018, for a 7-day period, presenting questions about personal and professional profile identification and preferences at work + SISA. Total research sample = 4,048. SISA index of the exercise has identified 394 (9,7%) self-actualizing subjects. Higher self-actualization percentages were identified in the older and more experienced group. The odds of being a self-actualizing person has shown to be correlated with educational level and age. The higher the formal education level of a subject, stronger the probability of being a self-actualizing individual. Subjects working on flexible organizations and contemporary management models show 1,39 times more chance of being self-actualized, than workers on hierarchical organizations. 50,7% of the total sample is composed by individuals working under traditional employment strict rules (CLT). Subjects in this group presents lower probability (7,4%) of being self-actualized. Individuals whose jobs and employment agreements are more flexible and autonomous have superior index for self-actualization. 90% of the sample have mentioned negative emotional impact from previous jobs. Conclusions are that self-actualization potential will be higher as the subject is older, more experienced and has higher educational level. Flexible and autonomous working conditions will also have a positive impact on self-actualization index

Psychiatric in-patients’ experiences of an art group : with a focus on the self

Holtzhausen, Minnon January 2014 (has links)
Aims: It is argued that one’s sense of self is threatened and eroded by mental illness. According to the narrative perspective, one’s personal life narrative is displaced and maintained by a story of illness. However, dialogical self theorists argue that mental illness limits the number of ‘I’ positions available within an individual, resulting in the positions/voices becoming rigid and being dominated by a singular, monological position. The aims of this qualitative study are to attempt to understand and examine psychiatric inpatients’ personal lived experiences of an art group. The goal of the study is to focus on the impact of the art-making process on these patients with regards to the construction of their sense of self. Design: A qualitative research design was used in the study. Method: Four psychiatric in-patient art group members – three male and one female, between the ages of 27 and 40 – were interviewed. A semi-structured interview schedule consisting of sixteen questions focusing on the interviewees’ experiences of the art group was used. The interviews were analysed using an interpretive phenomenological analysis. Results: Three superordinate themes emerged: What the Participants Gained From the Art Group, Sense of Community and Leaving a Mark, and The Experience of Self in the Art group. All three Superordinate themes fall within the participants’ experience of the art group. Conclusion: All four of the participants expressed positive feelings and enjoyment towards the art group. Participation in the art group provided the participants with a sense of pride, achievement and hope within their lives. As a result of participation on the art group, one of the four participants was able to construct a thin alternative experience and sense of self.

Vermaak, Amelia 27 March 2014 (has links)
M.Ed. (Multicultural Education) / Adolescents are constantly expected to prepare themselves successfully to fit into a rapidly changing society. To be able to cope with rapidly changing circumstances and fit into a multicultural society, adolescents need to have certain knowledge, skills and attitudes. Adolescence is a time of life which is marked by rapid physical, social, emotional and intellectual changes. As adolescents are easily influenced during this period, it is of the utmost importance that they be taught content which will make it possible for them to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes by means of which to fulfil their social, cultural and economical functions within a multicultural societv. A life skills programme in which the multicultural nature of the school and society has been taken into account in selecting its content can be used to teach the adolescent such knowledge, skills and attitudes. The content of such a life skills programme has to meet the criteria applicable to a multicultural curriculum. These life skills can then be taught to adolescents in schools by means of a multicultural life skills programme. This study therefore attempts to identify criteria according to which the evaluation of content for a life skills programme which will be taught in schools in the South African multicultural society, can be undertaken. These criteria have been adapted to form a checklist which can be used by persons who have to evaluate the content of a life skills programme for a multicultural school and society. These criteria should only be seen as a guideline and should be used by persons with a sound knowledge of multicultural education.
