A self-actualising learning programme: an educational neuropsychological perspectiveFerarro, Rosalind 01 January 2002 (has links)
This study has examined the effectiveness of a neuropsychologically based learning
programme aimed at enhancing the seJt:.actualisation of learners. The aim of the
programme is to create awareness of one's unique purpose in life. The need for
motivation, commitment and determination must he realised. llolistic thinking is an
important concept throughout the programme, in that it is aimed at unlocking latent
potential through the encouragement of lateral thinking. The awareness of underlying
potential enhances the realisation of each Ieamer's uniqueness and individual
contributions to society, and facilitates awareness of the need to accept responsibility for
one's own future. 'Ibis failure to fully utilise the potential of the brain has implications
for education. A teacher who is made aware ofthe huge untapped storage ofhuman brain
potential could be trained to disclose a learner's unused abilities, through adjusted
education, thus infonning learners of the intrinsic abilities oftheir brains. / Educational studies / M.Ed.

An analysis of psychological well-being from an educational psychological perspectiveLe Roux, Antoinette 29 February 2008 (has links)
In a study of psychological well-being, the researcher attempted to address the challenge of preventing mental illness and promoting mental health using an educational psychological perspective based on Unisa's Relations Theory.
According to Relations Theory, humans are understood by the relationships they form. The intra-psychic interaction of the components of the intra-psychic structure (I/ego, self, identity and self-concept) is responsible for people's behaviour, with the essences (attachment of meaning, involvement, experience and self-actualising) and the prerequisites (the forming of relations , the life-world and climate) forming the basis of the structure.
The researcher developed and administered a questionnaire on psychological well-being and conducted interviews, and on the basis of the findings reports that psychological well-being from an educational psychological perspective consists of a healthy and positive ego and self, clearly defined identities, positive thoughts and feelings, involvement in the life world, a positive and realistic self-concept and constructive self-talk, and self-realisation. / Educational Studies / M. Improving the lifestyles of previously disadvantaged individuals through a personal life planning programmeMokoena, Marshal Buti 30 November 2006 (has links)
There is scant research concerning youth development programmes specifically from Adler's (1968) Individual Psychology perspective. Current programmes seem to be void of critical issues that are important in the local context because of their having a strong bias towards the Western perspective. Thus, the present research project sought firstly to assist the Previously Disadvantaged Youth (PDY) to develop constructive lifestyles characterised by self-mastery, encouragement, creativity and social interest. Secondly, it aimed to obtain specific local African input that would help expand the current Personal Life Planning Programme (PLPP) to one that addresses the unique needs and circumstances confronting South African PDYs today. Finally, it attempted to test the validity, scope and merit of Adler's theoretical assertion, within the context of the previously disadvantaged communities in South Africa, that all humans are engaged in a lifelong striving for superiority to overcome perpetual feelings of inferiority and life tasks. The latter objectives were addressed through the implementation of the PLPP. The study, as well as the related PLPP, is strongly founded on Adler's Individual Psychology (Adler, 1968; Ansbacher & Ansbacher 1956; Corsini & Wedding, 2005; Meyer et al., 2003; Prochaska & Narcross cited in Osborn, 2001). The relevant data were collected from a sample of matriculants from the PDY population living in a black township near Pretoria. The information was collected by means of the PLPP workbook; semi structured interviews, as well as, audiovisual equipment. A combination of a "Pre-structured Case Outline" and the related "Sequential Analysis" (Miles & Huberman, 1994, p. 85) was adopted, with the researcher undertaking the entire data management process. In addition to confirming the applicability of Adler's theory within the PDY context, the findings suggest that the research objectives were significantly met, i.e. the participants reported and displayed marked lifestyle improvements along with specific life skills development needs related to their deprivation. / Psychology / D. An exploratory factor analysis on the measurement of psychological wellnessGropp, Liezl 30 June 2006 (has links)
This research investigated the psychometric characteristics of self-actualisation, locus of control, sense of coherence and emotional intelligence as constructs of psychological wellness. Details of the intercorrelatedness of the various constructs will assist in understanding the nature of psychological wellness and its measurement.
In the literature review a definition for psychological wellness was determined by studying various definitions and models of psychological wellness. During this investigation it was determined that the four constructs mentioned above were related to psychological wellness.
An explorative factor analysis was conducted to address the empirical research questions. Three factors (psychological adjustment, self-actualisation and stress management) were extracted from the analysis. The descriptive statistics were analysed in terms of management responsibility, gender and race.
The findings of the explorative factor analysis supported the theoretical definition of psychological wellness. It was found that self-actualisation played a key role in psychological wellness. Meaningfulness, although indicating a low loading on all three factors, must be present to provide meaning to day to day functioning. / Industrial and Organisational Psychology / MCOM (Industrial and Organisational Psychology)

Psychological strengths and disability : a study on hearing-impaired adultsDe Wet, Tessa 31 March 2008 (has links)
South Africa's equity legislation demands the incorporation of persons with disabilities in the workforce. Owing to the unique challenges that these people face, they need well-developed salutogenic characteristics such as sense of coherence, self-efficacy and locus of control in order to integrate effectively into mainstream environments. The objective of the research was to explore these salutogenic constructs in the hearing-impaired adult population and to note differences between the different sub-groups within the sample (N = 63). A biographical form and combination of salutogenic questionnaires were employed to measure these constructs. Descriptive statistics and non-parametric tests were utilised to analyse the data. The results showed statistically significant inter-group differences in all three salutogenic constructs. These differences were found for age groups, onset of deafness, deafness category, primary school attended, hearing status of spouse and parents, and level of qualification. / Industrial and Organizational Psychology / M.A. (Industrial and Organisational Psychology)

An educational psychological perspective on self-disclosure in adolescent interpersonal relationshipsPhetla, Rabi Joseph 11 1900 (has links)
Adolescents, like all individuals, have a need to belong. Consequently, during the
adolescent period, adolescents battle with the establishment and maintenance of
meaningful relationships. Most of them, unfortunately, do not succeed to establish and
maintain such relationships because of a lack of skills to do so. It appears, therefore, that
If adolescents are to enhance their interpersonal relationships so as to enable themselves
to self-actualize, they need to be taught interpersonal skills. One of the skills that they
should be taught is the self-disclosure.
As such, the first part of the literature study was devoted to the discussion of self disclosure.
The study of literature revealed that self-disclosure has many aspects, the
main ones being the nature of the self-disclosure content, self-discloser target, and
concealment. In the second part of the literature study, attention was paid to the nature
of interpersonal relationships with special reference to adolescents' relationships. The
malysis of interpersonal relationships revealed that the establishment and maintenance,
is well as the collapse of interpersonal relationships follow a particular pattern.
Data concerning perceptions, beliefs and attitudes held by adolescents towards selflish
closure in their interpersonal relationships was gathered by means of various
Techniques. Parents' perceptions, beliefs and attitudes towards their adolescent children's
perceptions, beliefs and attitudes towards self-disclosure in interpersonal relationships
were also assessed. The results of the empirical study revealed that adolescents hold selfdefeating
perceptions, beliefs and attitudes that make it difficult for them to handle selflisclosure
in ways that ought to enhance their interpersonal relationships so as to enable
themselves to self-actualize. These perceptions, beliefs and attitudes may not change easily as their parents, the most important component of the adolescents' significant
others, seem to be modelling self-defeating perceptions, beliefs and attitudes towards self-disclosure.
Lastly, a few guidelines to assist adolescents to handle self-disclosure in ways that ought
to enhance their interpersonal relationships so as to enable themselves to self-actualize
were given. / Thesis (D. Ed.)
