Show Me the Way to Go Home

Teberg, Lisa Marie 28 June 2013 (has links)
In the following nine linked stories, characters from disparate backgrounds and socio-economic strata converge in a rural community along the Missouri river in central Montana. A Texas-based oil exploration and production company takes up residence in the area, causing a stir in the neighborhood. Long-time local residents experience their daily lives amid a tourist driven economy and reaffirm their aspirations to leave despite significant obstacles and limitations. In "Show Me the Way to Go Home," a young waitress is stranded after a car accident and seeks help from residents living on the single row of houses in the area. In "Give Death Grace," a resident artist leaves to resolve her tumultuous past with her father. In "A Good Little Fisherwoman," a woman deals with the repercussions of her recent reproductive decisions during a fishing trip. In "Little Fires," a local man deals with the tragic burn injury of a child while also facing deeply rooted resentments with his mother. In "Dwelling," an aging local must decide whether or not she will sell her home to two strangers. In "Other Important Areas of Functioning," a woman decides to discontinue her mood stabilizing medications in favor of a more natural lifestyle. While this place means something different to each of these characters, they all coexist while facing individual challenges.

No contradictions : Identity work of managers working for sustainable enterprises

Richter Olsson, Anna, Stark, Ana Lucia January 2022 (has links)
This is a study about the identity work of managers working for sustainable enterprises. Contrary to CSR managers who are constantly managing tensions between achieving social and environmental goals while working at a company whose aim is to maximise profits, the identities of managers working for sustainable enterprises, do not indicate that they are experiencing contradictions between sustainable and commercial discourses. We show how the managers' self values and beliefs are aligned with their role and the organisational goals of the company. These managers, above all, focus on facilitating sustainability and use commercial and economic tools to reach their goals. In addition, our study shows a dominant theme of self- actualization that surrounds and influences the managers' identities. Drawn by the sustainability field, these managers seem to have found in their workplaces, a perfect platform to fulfil themselves. Finally we show how these managers become political actors directing their actions towards changing systems in society. We argue that our findings can be an example of a broader shift towards sustainable discourses in businesses, where we can also see reflexivity gaining ground as a form of managerial practice in organisations. We suggest that there can be hope found in these new organisations, and that it might be possible to strive towards social, environmental and economic goals at the same time.

A Crack In Everything

Hoffman, Jeffrey 01 January 2012 (has links)
Contained herein is a close examination of self-awareness and self-portraiture as it applies to the works of artist Jeffrey Hoffman. Water, frozen into various forms and combined with natural elements of wood, slowly melt over an indeterminable amount of time, each droplet documented as the process transforms the elements. Through this process, we see change. We see time. We see truth. This documentation of change and time through natural elements is where the artwork comes full circle. Working with new media to explore man's interconnectivity to life, energy, and the cosmos, he produces time based installations, photographs, videos, and sculptures that serve as both existential metaphors and Tantric symbols. With the use of digital cameras and video, a record is created by which the disintegration which occurs from the unseen forces of gravity, heat and time upon sculptures made from natural elements and ice is examined. In its sculptural form, his work can be categorized as Installation art and Performance art due to its evolving nature. Each piece is intended to either change over time or to have that change halted by another temporal force like that of flowing electricity. The possibility of allowing varying levels of self-awareness to emerge through self portraiture is also examined. The existential, as well as the metaphysical, can be present in a physical form when the form is imbued with evidence of an evolutionary process. In many ways, the work serves as a self portrait. It is a means for Hoffman to examine his own existentialism as a student of the modern western world and life.

Psychological correlates of constructive perfectionism of university teachers

А., Irgasheva, K. A. January 2015 (has links)
The article is devoted to the study of psychological correlates of perfectionism of university teachers. Perfectionism is viewed upon as a complex multi-component phenomenon manifested in the subject’s aspiration to excellence in all aspects of their life that can act as a psychological resource promoting professional development and self-realization. The major characteristics of perfectionism, ensuring a favorable course of the process of self-improvement, including self-actualization, achievement motivation and self-attitude, have been worked out on the basis of researches of home and foreign authors. The empirical study, undertaken by the authors using a correlation analysis, examines the relationship between perfectionism and the given psychological characteristics on a sample of university teachers. The study shows that perfectionism and its components (self-oriented, socially-oriented and socially-prescribed perfectionism) are positively correlated with motivation for achievement and absence of motivation to avoid failure, and have a negative relation with self-actualization and self-attitude. As a result, it is concluded that perfectionism of university teachers is not conducive to complete realization in the sphere of their professional activity and does not act as a psychological resource for personal development and self-improvement.

Самоактуализация личности и мотивация работающих пенсионеров в контексте удовлетворенности жизнью : магистерская диссертация / Self-actualization of personality and motivation of working pensioners in the context of life satisfaction

В., Zaytseva, O. V. January 2021 (has links)
The final qualifying work is devoted to the study of the phenomena of self-actualization, motivation of working pensioners in the context of life satisfaction. The relevance of the study lies in the insufficient knowledge of these phenomena, as well as of the indicated age period as a whole. The object of the research was the self-actualization of a person at retirement age. The subject of the research was the self-actualization of the personality and the motivation of working pensioners in the context of life satisfaction. The aim of the study was to identify the relationship between self-actualization, motivation and satisfaction with the quality of life in people of retirement age, depending on their professional employment. As a result, we put forward a hypothesis that there is a relationship between the levels of self-actualization, motivation and satisfaction with the quality of life of non-working and working pensioners, and there may also be differences in the nature of this relationship. The master's thesis consists of an introduction, two chapters, chapter conclusions, a conclusion, a bibliography and annexes. The introduction reveals the relevance of the research, defines the object and subject of research, sets the goal and objectives, based on which the hypothesis of the research is put forward. Also, the introduction indicates the theoretical and methodological foundations of the study, methods and empirical base. In the first chapter, self-actualization, motivation, and satisfaction with the quality of life at retirement age are considered in the theoretical aspects of these constructs. A theoretical analysis is carried out, which reveals the concepts of self-actualization, motivation and satisfaction with the quality of life in a given age period. Conclusions for the first chapter represent the results of the study of theoretical material. The second chapter is the empirical part of the study. It presents: a description of the sample of subjects, research methods, comparative and correlation analyzes. The sample of subjects consists of 231 people of retirement age, divided by the criterion of professional employment. The following methods were used as diagnostic tools: the method of motivational induction by J. Nütten, a questionnaire for assessing satisfaction with the quality of life, and the self-actualization test CAT. The conclusions of the second chapter include the main findings of the empirical study. In the conclusion, the results of the theoretical and empirical parts of the study are summarized. The conclusions on the hypothesis put forward are indicated, and the practical significance of the study is substantiated.

Practice and Form in Rilke, Kafka, and Walser

Hoffman, Christopher Thomas January 2024 (has links)
This dissertation asks how literature relates to practices of self-formation. In search of a way to describe this relation with greater concreteness, it examines how specific literary genres mediate formative practices and how literary texts appropriate those genres. Three case studies focus on works written by canonical German-language authors in the years after 1900, when the established relations between literature and practice were breaking down. Rilke's Stunden-Buch revives the devotional prayer book; Kafka's Betrachtung looks back to literary contemplation and meditation; and Walser's “Der Spaziergang” draws on the tradition of literary walking journals. Close readings show how these texts transform the practices regulated by their source genres when those genres began to lose the self-evidence they once enjoyed. The study seeks to strengthen our critical vocabulary for describing literature’s claim on everyday life by demonstrating how practices of self-formation manifest at the textual level. The texts studied can no longer reproduce their source genres’ unambiguous relation to practices (respectively, devotion, reflection, and walking). However, they incite new forms of aesthetic activity to overcome endemic problems with modern social life.
