Self-realization in contemporary theology : towards a vision of Christian wholeness

Slater, Jennifer 02 1900 (has links)
This research determines the ground for a Christian theological anthropology that makes provision for a doctrine that supports human self-realization. It is evident from the study that anthropological self-realization is an involved process of becoming truly human, not an isolated course founded solely on the biblical knowledge of being created in the image and likeness of God. All sciences, and in particular anthropological sciences, enjoy the prerogative of unraveling and analyzing the human person. Whether these sciences are neuro-biological, psychological, theological, philosophical, biblical, spiritual or mystical in character, each with its specific method legitimately attempts to explain the complexities of the human person. In the light of this neither philosophy nor theology possess the exclusive claim to authentic human wisdom. In truth most scientific insights have a combined impact on the self-realizing growth and development of humanity. The process of self-realization links theology to real life questions such as evil, suffering, hope, love, justice and freedom, as well as with the immanent, the transcendent, the human and the divine. This thesis holds to the opinion that a theology of self-realization would contribute to the 'humanization' of theology since it brings praxis and theory into close alignment. This study equally expresses the conviction that the doctrine of consecrated vowed life, an ecclesiastical structure in the Roman Catholic Church, is particularly in need of humanization, as the notion of 'self' as a strength has been notably absent from traditional treatises on the practices of religious life. Conventional forms of consecrated vowed life called the woman to suppress and spiritualize at least some of her femininity. This was due to the distorted theological anthropology that sustained consecrated life in which God was presented as an idea to be grasped intellectually, and not an experience to be lived. / Philosophy, Practical & Systematic Theology / Th. 索爾貝婁《漢伯特的禮物》中「對話式」呈現的自我 / A Theater of Self-Realization: A Dialogic Reading of Saul Bellow's Humboldt's Gift

Lin, Hui Ch'ing Unknown Date (has links)
In most of Saul Bellow's writings, he displays a fundamental pattern of human existence from self-denial to self-realization. His heroes always embark quests for metaphysical realities or ideal objects that enable them to resist the dehumanizing forces of the material world. Through the process of incessant quest, they try to assert their individualities. In his novels, Bellow usually creates an air of reality or actuality that has been located in quotidian events. He then moves beyond it to attach importance to imagination or metaphysical hunches for the realization of selfhood. This thesis aims to explore the realization of selfhood problematized in Humboldt's Gift from the narrative mode of dialogue, "an active dialogic penetration into the unfinalizable depths of man." Chapter One provides some biographical data of Saul Bellow and the general pattern of his fictional world. Chapter Two focuses on the interaction among the manifold images of the self: mainly, the correlation of the inner self and the social self. The following chapters deal respectively with the necessity of dialogic relationships between self and other, and the aspects of inner voices concerned with the development of selfhood.

Auto-realização de jogadores de Tibia : MMORPG

Heyde, Carla Junger January 2007 (has links)
In order to analyze the nature of the society we live today, which has a new virtual dimension possible by the Massively Multiplayer On-line Role Playing Games – MMORPGs -, we requested Axel Honneth’s theory. The author identifies the arising of an individualism of self-realization in modern capitalist societies, in which the individuals demand autonomous conditions of search for self-realization to reach what they understand as “good life”. This work analyzes the motives that lead the players to opt to participate in the “virtual society” of the games, starting from the hypothesis that the social environment that these games provide enables the construction of the players’ self-realization in a complementary way to the social environment which the individual belongs in flesh and blood. The MMORPGs are so complementing the individuals’ needs of social realization, and the “virtual” social environments being concrete in their contributions to such individuals’ demands. What explains the players’ option to experience their social relations inside the game. To investigate the veracity of this hypothesis a virtual ethnography was carried out in the Tibia game environment and the technique of participative observation was utilized, which we named “Playing”: watching, reading, writing and participating. The data were collected through informal conversations with more than five hundred characters for a period of seventeen months, in a total of approximately four thousand hours. They were analyzed by the particularity of each type of relation developed by the players: loving, legal and social appraisal. This research contributes to the comprehension of diverse social phenomena related to this kind of game and to assist the different publics – opinion creators, relative of players, potential players, and education institutions – to evaluate the act of to play. The data confirm our hypothesis and make possible the elaboration of questions about phenomena that are reproduced in the virtual environment and contradict the yearnings of those who believe that “another world is possible”.
