Serial Monogamy and Relational Influences on Patterns of Condom Use for Young Adults in Dating Relationships

Bolton, Melissa 14 December 2009 (has links)
Within Canada, young adults have been identified as being at high risk for sexually transmitted infections (STI). One major contributing factor is inconsistent condom use, particularly within monogamous relationships (Civic, 2000; Critelli & Suire, 1998; Misovich, Fisher & Fisher, 1997; Winfield & Whaley, 2005). This research used qualitative methods to investigate the process by which young women rationalize inconsistent condom use and the relational influences that aid in this transition. A sample of fifteen women (between 18-24 years of age) were surveyed and interviewed. Using grounded theory analysis, the results indicated that the process of discontinuing condoms is multifaceted. Within relationships, unprotected sex comes to signify developmental milestones for the couple. It is associated with desirable relationship characteristics of commitment, trust, intimacy and fidelity. The results suggest that health promotion interventions should emphasize the high risk for STI posed by using condoms inconsistently within the monogamous relationships of young adults.

Encoding serial data for energy-delay-product and energy minimization

Ekambavanan, Sasidharan 15 May 2009 (has links)
Serial or parallel buses are widely used to communicate information in most electronic devices. The energy consumed by bus interconnects may comprise a significant portion of the overall energy consumption of the device. Hence, techniques to reduce the energy consumption of bus interconnects have become an important area of research. One common method adopted to reduce energy is Bus Encoding, where redundant bits are added to the original data stream either in time or space to reduce the energy consumption. In this thesis, a novel bus encoding technique, called the Multiple Codebook Approach (MCA), is presented to reduce the Energy-Delay-Product (EDP) and Energy for data transmission over serial buses. For any symbol that is to be transmitted on the bus, the best code is selected (from an EDP or energy minimization standpoint) from among a set of codebooks. In particular, the implementation utilizes 3 codebooks. To minimize EDP, the codeword for each symbol is selected based on the product of the number of transitions resulting from its transmission in a serial manner, and the codeword length. To minimize energy, the codeword for each symbol is selected based on the number of transitions alone. The MCA is compared with other reported techniques in the literature, and the results are quite promising. The MCA achieves a 11% improvement in EDP and 3% improvement iv in Energy over the best approach known for serial data transmission, which was reported by Macii and others.

Serial Echocardiographic Evaluation of 22 Closely Related Great Danes

Farmer, Michael R. 2009 May 1900 (has links)
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate a family of Great Danes with known dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) using serial echocardiographic evaluation. Animals, Materials, and Methods: Twenty-two dogs were included in this study. They were split into two groups, clinically normal and those with DCM. The dogs were scanned using 2D and M-mode echocardiography every thirty to sixty days beginning at approximately14-20 days of age. Data were collected and analyzed using generalized additive mixed regression, linear regression, and non-linear regression. Results: All dogs demonstrated progressive echocardiographic changes. The Great Danes with DCM showed several echocardiographic differences when compared to the normal dogs. They included differences in left ventricular diameter, left atrial diameter, interventricular septal thickness, ejection fraction, and fractional shortening. Conclusions: The present study shows that progressive echocardiographic changes occur in both clinically normal Great Danes and those with DCM as they mature. Additionally, the two groups differed with regards to left ventricular diameter, left atrial diameter, interventricular septal thickness, ejection fraction, and fractional shortening.

Poétiques de la répétition / Poetic of the repetition

Barbosa de Almeida Lecourt, Iracema 29 November 2012 (has links)
This research finds its starting point in the practical experience of the studio work and proposes a study of the notion ofrepetition such as it emerges from different contemporary artistical poetics.Different notions associated to repetition are evoked by the works and the specific approaches of the artists, through a research which builds itself in a reflexive way, during comings and goings between the work, the way it is elaborated, the perception which it arouses and texts dedicated to the poetics of each artist. The identification of a particularly vast universe, revealed by the repetition and found in various initiatives and in various moments, directed this work to the construction of a well articulated structure, and concentrated the glance on the poetics of four artists: Mira Schendel, Richard Long, Eva Hesse and Nelson Félix
