Testing a social-cognitive model of bystander responses to bullying: Towards and understanding of why bystanders respond as they do

Cwinn, Eli 06 September 2013 (has links)
The current study tests a social-cognitive model of bystander responses to bullying in an attempt to better understand why bystanders respond as they do. Three forms of bystander responses were predicted by adult and friend responses to bullying and the bystander’s reasons for intervening. The present study involved 326 children from grades 4-8 who completed the PREVNet Assessment Survey, a novel wide-ranging measure of bullying phenomena. Sound psychometric properties were found for the four measures used in the present study. In elucidating the effects of social context, the differential impact of adult and friend responses on bystander responses was examined. Results indicate that friends are more influential than are adults in predicting bystander responses. Further, results of serial multiple mediation analysis generally support a social-cognitive model, suggesting that social context impacts intervention reasoning, which in turn, impact bystander responses. Implications for future research and policy are discussed. / SSHRC Joseph-Armand Bombardier CGS Master's Scholarship

Spinn i det nya medielandskapet : Nya medieaktörers inflytande på den traditionella journalistiken / Spin in the new media landscape

Månthén, Felicia, Johansson, Malin January 2014 (has links)
Aim  With this study we want to highlight and analyze the media spin of the PR campaign Miss Skinny by clarifying; a diffusion pattern which covers posts published by bloggers and journalists; a framing pattern from the first audited post to the last; how journalists are influenced by user generated content, and what consequences this may have for the news coverage. Method  We have conducted a studied of news posts and blog posts about the Swedish PR campaign Miss Skinny through content analysis, diffusion analysis and mapped direct links between blog posts and news posts. Main result  We found that a surprisingly large amount of news postings contained direct links to previous blog posts and that the former media serial no longer can be applied on today's modern media where journalists and other players come together on the converged media arena.

Microcontroller-based Multiport Communication System For Digital Electricity Meters

Bestepe, Firat 01 December 2004 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis explains the design of a microcontroller-based device, which provides an efficient and practical alternative for the remote reading of digital electricity meters over Public Switch Telephone Network (PSTN). As an alternative application, a system is constructed providing file transfer capability to the PC connected to the port of implemented device in addition to remote reading of digital electricity meters. This thesis also provides detailed explanations about the basics of serial asynchronous communication over modem for PICs (peripheral interface controllers) together with description of each component included by the constructed system, which can be used in energy metering sector commonly.

The strength of the evidence for splinting and serial casting as treatment for elbow contractures: an integrative Critical Literature Review

Whitford, Jacki 06 1900 (has links)
Elbow contractures in burn survivors lead to difficulties in their ability to perform meaningful occupations. Interventions focus on improving movement at the elbow while considering social and psychological factors in the individual's environmental context. The purpose of the review was to determine the methodological quality of research evaluating splinting and serial casting to improve elbow contractures and resulting functional limitations. A comprehensive search strategy uncovered 10 research studies. Standardized critical appraisal tools and protocols were used to analyze the research. Although some methodological issues were identified, the findings were positive. Strengths and weaknesses of the research were delineated to support and guide the use of serial casting and splinting. A body of research was found to warrant consideration of social and psychological factors. Conclusion. There is preliminary quality of evidence to support the use of splinting and serial casting and important considerations for future research. / Rehabilitation Science - Occupational Therapy
