January 2002 (has links)
Abstract: This paper deals with the novel O Filho do Pescador (1843), by Antônio Gonçalves Teixeira e Sousa, as well as with a bibliographical survey on his literary production that was dispersed from 1840 to 1860 in some publications in Rio de Janeiro. The objective is the rescue of his work because of its important role in the creation of the Brazilian novel, in the beginnings of the 19th century. The proposition is largely justified because with the work of Teixeira e Sousa the Brazilian narrative fiction begins and literary criticism never gave the due attention to it (despite its so many reprints) and, what's more, no attempt has been made to collect all his writings forgotten in so many magazines and papers of the 19th century, as well as the literary criticism of the time. Collecting all the literary reviews of Teixeira e Sousa's work up to the 20th century demonstrates that the opinions issued since the 19th century are very similar, what makes evident the lack of attention given to the author by brazilian researchers. / Mestre

Descrição e análise de construções seriais em baulê / Description and analysis of serial constructions in Baule

Pal, Dayane Cristina 17 December 2010 (has links)
This thesis has the objective (i) to present a descriptive analysis of serial constructions in Baule, classifying them according to the typology elaborated by Aikhenvald & Dixon (2006), which subdivides serial constructions in two major semantic groups symmetrical and asymmetrical constructions pursuant to their syntactic and semantic properties, and (ii) to analyze its conceptual organization based on the perspective of two theories of cognitivist orientation, namely, Cognitive Grammar (Langacker, 1997, 2008, 2010) and the Grammar of Constructions (Goldberg, 1995). Furthermore, the analyzes sought to compare the serial constructions in Baule to coordinate constructions without connective for being similar in structure, emphasizing that, in serialization, occurs the description of a single event, and, in coordination, it is possible to represent two or more events, what fundamentally differentiates them. The corpora is constituted by the recording of narratives related by native speakers of Baule and by sentences elaborated in Portuguese and French translated to Baule.

Avaliação da estabilidade das medidas cefalométricas após cinco anos em pacientes com o ângulo ANB maior 4º, tratados ortodonticamente com extração de quatro primeiros pré-molares / Five years evaluation of cephalometric measurements in patients that displayed over than 4 degrees and angle, treated by means of orthodontic appliances and the four first-premolars extraction

Nahás, Ana Carla Raphaelli 26 April 2000 (has links)
Obtiveram-se as compensações dentárias necessárias no final do tratamento ortodôntico e estas foram preservadas a longo prazo / The main objective of this study was to evaluate the long-term stability of the following cephalometric measurements: SNA, SNB, ANB, 1.NA, 1-NA, 1 .NB, 1 -NB, 1.ENP-ENA, IMPA, 1.1 . This analysis was carried out in orthodontically treated patients which had the four first pre-molars extracted. Alternatively, this study also determined the influence of the proposed treatment at the dento-basal arrangements by orthodontic mechanics and its preservation after five years of treatment completion. The sample of this study was comprised of twenty-seven patients that were assessed at the beginning (T1), at the end (T2) and five years later (T3). At the beginning of treatment the patients age averaged thirteen years and five months and all the subjects displayed an ANB angle over than 4 degrees. Among the studied sample, 14 subjects were classified as Angle Class II, Division 2 malocclusion, 12 subjects displayed Angle Class I, and 1 Angle Classe II, Division 2. All the subjects were orthodontically treated by means of edgewise appliances. During all the three phases of the study the radiological data were obtained through lateral cephalograms, which were performed manually, depicted eight angular and two linear measurements. The statistical analysis in which the data were processed included one way analysis of variance in order to identify the changes between the phases related to each studied measurement. As an adjunctive method, the Tukey test was conducted to indicate in which phases of the proposed study the statistically significant changes were occurring. The Pearson Product Moment Correlation was recorded to relate the 1.1 cephalometric measurements with all the remaining measurements obtained throughout the three phases of the study. According to the obtained results, all the studied measurements, between phases T1 and T2, significantly changed reflecting the influence of orthodontic mechanics on the dental movement. Between the T2 and T3 phases, all the measurements remained stable. By the end of the orthodontic treatment all the necessaries dental arrangements were performed and preserved in a long-term fashion.

As Vantagens da Amoralidade: Melodrama, comentário político, e interação com o público em House of Cards / The Advantage of Amorality: Melodrama, political commentary, and interacting with the audience in House of Cards

Gozzi, Giancarlo Casellato 09 November 2018 (has links)
This Master\'s dissertation delves into the different ways with which the television series House of Cards (Netflix, Beau Willimon, 2013-) interacts and communicates with its audience and time. Having as theme an unscrupulous couple of politicians that climb the steps of power in the United States capital, the series works in the intersection between methods of keeping the spectator\'s attention, the production of a political commentary, and the commercial imperatives of television distribution. Being the first example of a series distributed by an online streaming platform, it also stimulates questions regarding the innovation brought to the serial form by this mode of exhibition. This way, this study starts by analyzing the particular use of dramatic asides by the protagonist, in which as he addresses directly to his audience he hooks them into the diegesis and stimulates them to continue watching the show, as co-conspirators to its schemes. It then moves on to an interpretation of the political commentary promoted by the show through melodramatic mechanisms, commentary that to be effective needs to bring into the story extradiegetic elements that resemble the fiction with the real world and familiarize the audience. At the same time, internet users and journalists appropriate this same fiction to comment on their own conjuncture, showing the reciprocity between fictional worlds and the reality that they comment on and which they participate in. Finally, it is analyzed the relationship between the serial form that structures the show and the online streaming platform that distributes it, inquiring on how much modes of exhibition that stimulate concentrated viewing of serial products innovate this known format, inasmuch as this format helps the promotion of new modes of distribution and exhibition.

Inverse Discrete Cosine Transform by Bit Parallel Implementation and Power Comparision

Bhardwaj, Divya Anshu January 2003 (has links)
<p>The goal of this project was to implement and compare Invere Discrete Cosine Transform using three methods i.e. by bit parallel, digit serial and bit serial. This application describes a one dimensional Discrete Cosine Transform by bit prallel method and has been implemented by 0.35 ìm technology. When implementing a design, there are several considerations like word length etc. were taken into account. The code was implemented using WHDL and some of the calculations were done in MATLAB. The VHDL code was the synthesized using Design Analyzer of Synopsis; power was calculated and the results were compared.</p>

Halin, Niklas January 2008 (has links)
<p>Abstract</p><p>Title: Serial recall of two-voice lists: Words are not perceptually organized by voice.</p><p>The present study examined how voice affects the perceptual grouping of words in short-term memory that are auditory presented. Three different voice-lists were used: single-voice, alternating-voice and split-voice. In single-voice lists all words were presented in the same voice. In alternating-voice lists words were presented alternately in a male and a female voice. Finally, in split-voice lists words were presented grouped four and four in a male and a female voice. It was hypothesized that recall would be best for split-voice lists, especially at serial position 4 and 5. This was not confirmed. However, in line with earlier investigations, a recall advantage of single-voice lists was found in comparison with recall of alternating-voice lists at the beginning of the serial position curve. Taken together, these results suggest that words are not perceptually organized by voice in short-term memory. Like earlier studies this study found that recall of single-voice lists was better than alternating-voice lists at the first serial position, a result that yet has to be explained.</p><p>Keywords: Multi-voice lists, serial recall, short-term memory, perceptual organization</p>

Differential processing of quantity and order of numbers : neuropsychological, electrophysiological and behavioural evidence

Turconi, Eva 29 September 2005 (has links)
Numbers convey different meanings when used in different contexts (Wiese, 2003). In a cardinal context, a number will tell us how many entities are in a set and convey quantity meaning. In an ordinal context, a number will refer to the relative position (or rank) of one element within a sequence; non-numerical ordered series (e.g. the letters of the alphabet) can also be used to provide meaningful order information. Because quantity and order are linked up with each other in the cognitive number domain (the larger the quantity a number refers to, the later it is located in the conventional number sequence), the question of whether they rely on some common or distinct underlying mechanism(s) is theoretically relevant and was addressed in the present thesis. Experimental studies showed evidence of both similarities (similar distance and SNARC effects, recruitment of parietal and frontal regions, and conjoint impairment or preservation after brain damage) and dissociations (different developmental course, dissociation after cerebral lesion, and specific behavioural markers) between quantity and order neuro-functional processes. The aim of the present thesis was to clarify the relationship between numerical quantity and order processing and to test the hypothesis that they rely on (at least partially) dissociated mechanisms. We tested this hypothesis in a single case study, an electrophysiological study and in two behavioural experiments. In the neuropsychological study, we reported the case of patient CO, who showed Gerstmann syndrome after bilateral parietal damage and became unable to process sequence order relations (e.g. he couldn't recite the number sequence backwards, nor decide whether a number, letter, day or month comes before or after a given target in the corresponding sequence, and he was unable to verify the order of items in a pair). Nonetheless, the patient had largely preserved quantity processing abilities (he could compare numbers and dot patterns to find the smaller or larger, and showed a standard distance effect, he could produce a number smaller or larger than a given target, and match dot patterns with Arabic numerals). Overall, CO's pattern of performance was interpreted as reflecting the involvement of different mechanisms when processing quantity or sequence order relations. Our electrophysiological study corroborated this finding since different spatio-temporal patterns of the distance effect were observed when subjects had to process numbers in a quantity comparison task or in an order judgment task. Quantity processing elicited an early distance effect over the P2p component on left parietal sites, whereas the distance effect was slightly delayed and bilaterally distributed in the numerical order judgment task; and this latter task additionally recruited prefrontal regions on a later (P3-counterpart) component. Finally, our behavioural study further emphasized the involvement of different mechanisms underlying the processing of quantity and numerical order and provided some evidence about the nature of these specific mechanisms. In the number comparison (quantity) task, the standard distance effect was proposed to reflect the involvement of a magnitude comparison mechanism; whereas the reverse distance effect observed in the numerical order verification task was taken as evidence for the recruitment of a serial search (recitation) process. Besides, the pair-order effect was also found to specifically affect order but not quantity judgments. Taken together, the data collected in the present thesis lend further support to the hypothesis that quantity and numerical order rely on distinct processing mechanisms that can be damaged selectively after cerebral lesions, that recruit similar brain areas but with a different spatio-temporal course and that show specific behavioural markers.

A High Voltage Charge-Coupled Device (CCD) Controller ASIC for the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST)

Chun, Ross F 01 May 2010 (has links)
This thesis will present the design, implementation, and testing of a high voltage Charge-Coupled Device (CCD) controller ASIC for the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST), which will be used to study dark energy and dark matter. The LSST observatory, which includes a 3.2-gigapixel camera, will cover the entire sky every three nights by taking continuous 15-second exposures. The CCD controller ASIC, or Sensor Control Chip (SCC), will provide five CCD driver channels that are capable of generating serial or parallel clock signals for the LSST’s imaging sensors during readout mode. The SCC will also provide three programmable bias voltages for the CCDs along with eight supplementary programmable voltages and currents for the CCD’s output drain terminals. Additionally, the controller ASIC includes eight control signals for a separate Analog Signal Processing Integrated Circuit (ASPIC) that is designed as the readout chip for LSST. The SCC is designed to operate down to 153 K. Fabricated in a commercially available 0.8-micron Bipolar-CMOS-DMOS Silicon-On-Insulator (BCD-SOI) process, the SCC has been verified to meet all design requirements.
