English second language learner's interpretation and appreciation of literacy texts :a South African case study of multiliteracy/multimodality

Schoeman, Kristoff 26 April 2013 (has links)
This dissertation seo out to investigate if use of visually symbolic representations in addition to the more traditional written methods of the key elements 9theme, setting, characterisation) of a short story would support South African ESL learners to grow in their interpretation and appreciation and appreciation of English literary texts. The assertion was that using a multimodal (verbal-visual) transmediated interpretation of the key elements (theme, setting, characterisation)of a short story might afford ESL learners a "deeper reading" (inferential comprehension and appreciation) of a literary text, and that the learners could also be supported to grow in their interpretation and appreciation of English literature. The research findings of the literary analysis project revealed that ESL learners with a "satisfactory" English proficiency can be supported by using transmediation to engage them in rich interpretations of literary genres to realise their interpretations linguistically in written academic eesays. / English Studies / M. Counting planes

Rawlins, Isabel Bethan January 2013 (has links)
This collection of prose-poems and flash fiction, together with a few short stories, shows how romantic relationships colour our perspectives on the world. The collection has echoes throughout of speakers' voices, theme, imagery and tone. There is a narrative logic too, but working on a subtle level of echo and resonance

Good-Gooder-Goodest / Isikhumba Sikaxam

Majola, Fundile Lawrence January 2014 (has links)
My stories are set in the townships, and move with the vigorous rhythms and jagged structures of township life. Some of them are written in English and others in isiXhosa. Some of the dialogue is township slang, a mixture of languages; and pure isiXhosa. The stories follow no particular pattern and are arranged according to any form of chronology, and different voices, at times as a man/boy and in others as a girl. The characters are not related each story perfectly stands for itself. Some of the stories hark back to the days of apartheid and are seen through the eyes of a child confused by the humiliations of his elders. / Amabali am asekelwe ezilokishini yaye ahambelana neemeko ezimaxongo zokuphila zasezilokishini apho yaye amanye asukela kwixesha lengcinezelo yesizwe esimnyama. The Development of the Dominant Female in Selected Stories of F. Scott Fitzgerald

Rose, Elizabeth D. 08 1900 (has links)
This study of thirty representative short stories from 1912-1941 demonstrates the stages of growth in Fitzgerald's writing which emerged from his own mental development, focusing upon his changing attitudes toward women as he reflects these attitudes in his depictions of the dominant female figures in the stories. The above chronology is then divided into four major blocks; in each block the dominant female illustrates Fitzgerald's concept of women at that particular stage of his life, The stories prove to be integral to the whole of Fitzgerald's writing and deserve to be judged independently of the novels. Furthermore, through an examination of Fitzgerald's short stories, the growth periods and the natural course of his changing attitudes become all the more clear and incisive.

Tessier, Hugo 05 1900 (has links)
This master’s thesis in research/creation explores the popular scope as well as the theatrical aspect associated with the narrative figures that are the pitchmen. Following a critical reading of the Nouvelles récréations et joyeux devis (1558) from Bonaventure Des Périers, the essay portion of the thesis attempts to identify the particular posture presented by the pitchman narrator from the French Renaissance. We have attempted to illustrate how this discourse used by Des Périers, through his particular stylistic and discursive structure, partakes in the pitchman figure who addresses the readers directly as he would do in the public square and uses this posture to play with them, using paradoxical effects of proximity and detachment. This playful manner through which the pitchmen distinguish themselves will fin echoes in the creation portion of this thesis. Propos et contes avinés is a collection of short stories inspired by the boccaccian tradition in which the protagonists tell stories in order to convince their listeners of the validity of their opinions. Their dialogue (the discourse) is juxtaposed with narrative (the tale) in a carnivalesque atmosphere.

Jan Opolský a jeho prozaické dílo v dobovém literárním kontextu / Jan Opolský and his prosaic work in temporary literary context

Horčíková, Lucie January 2011 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to define Jan Opolský′s prosaic works with emphasis put on his evident inspiration through fine arts. The work of Jan Opolský does not exceed limits of a short stories. It almost falls short of an action. The predominant feature would be reflexion and visual description. That is especially the case with voluminious parts devoted to the bright light and the color nuances - with their changing expresions and diverse shades reflected on the presented object of art. The whole momentum of his prosaic work tends to be included in exactly these parts of his ouvre. In his writing, Opolský uses his skills he earned as a craftsman and as an expert in various artistic fields. Because of his obsession with the world of art, he can be considered a good example of a decadent artist. A number of his texts, especially given these features it is focusing on, have symbolic legitimacy anyway.

Tradução comentada de três contos de Edogawa Rampo: uma investigação das primeiras obras da literatura policial no Japão / Commented translation of three short stories by Edogawa Rampo: an investigation of the first Japanese works of crime literature

Ivasa, Lídia Harumi 22 March 2017 (has links)
Crime literature originated from the emergence of the big cities, which enabled the anonymity of the criminal and the creation of a police force to fight this criminality. In Japan, after the Meiji period (1868-1912), the first translations of Western crime short stories are published, with authors such as Edgar Allan Poe and Arthur Conan Doyle. Influenced by these readings, Hirai Tar (1894-1965) writes the first stories of this genre set in Japan, under the pseudonym Edogawa Rampo, spreading one of the most popular genres in the country today. This work presents the writer Edogawa Rampo to the Brazilian reader, besides proposing a commented translation of three crime short stories, presenting the translating options and the cultural differences which permeate the source text and target text, based on the Theories of Translation. We have selected three short stories from the beginning of Rampo\'s career, which are: Nisen dka, Dzaka no satsujin jiken e Shinri shiken, respectively translated to Portuguese as A moeda de cobre de dois sen, Assassinato na ladeira D and Teste psicológico. We also present a brief context of the crime genre in Japan at Rampo\'s time and at the present.

Poletto, Caroline 28 March 2011 (has links)
Submitted by Mariana Dornelles Vargas (marianadv) on 2015-03-19T17:49:12Z No. of bitstreams: 1 tao_perto.pdf: 14815217 bytes, checksum: e50a3bfe314240a743ac3c073ddbd810 (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2015-03-19T17:49:12Z (GMT). / This essay intends to analyze caricatures and tales of some libertarian and anti-clerical journals and supplements from Buenos Aires and Porto Alegre which circulated in these cities during the years 1897 to 1916, in an attempt to portray the many ways and strategies used by those small press vehicles in order to contest, denounce and, possible, implement actions to promote a new reality. Comparison will be used in order to oppose a social context to another, pointing out differences and similarities between the several publications addressed in this study, as well as what concerns the analysis of the caricatures and tales, carrying out similarities and differences between visual and verbal discourse of such elements. The caricatures studied here will be treated as representations, since it is believed that the dimension of the images is always a (re) creation, a (re) interpretation of a possible reality, which in this case, the images are seen as a class struggle tool, a combat weapon. The tales, on the other hand, are considered valuable pedagogical elements in the promotion of the readers awareness, since its briefness had the intention to convey the message without complexity. Moreover, it is assumed that both the caricatures and the tales have a broader range than the longer materials, i.e., they reach a greater number of readers, which justifies this study and alludes to the importance of these elements in the formation of its readers. The periodicals that are going to be used for the analysis are La Protesta, from Buenos Aires and A Luta and Lúcifer, both from Porto Alegre, and also the supplements La Obra and Suplemento de La Protesta from Buenos Aires.
