Ethnic Identities among Second-Generation Haitian Young Adults in Tampa Bay, Florida: An Analysis of the Reported Influence of Ethnic Organizational Involvement on Disaster Response after the Earthquake of 2010

Telus, Herrica 01 January 2011 (has links)
Drawing upon 20 in-depth interviews with second generation Haitian young adults, I examined the ethnic identities and the involvement in ethnic organizations of the respondents. This study pays particular attention to how involvement in ethnic organizations influenced how the second generation Haitians believed the earthquake affected their identities and how they ultimately responded to the earthquake. Several of the findings revealed differences in how and why the respondents chose to ethnically identify such as Haitian, Haitian-American, black Haitian. The respondents' choice to join an ethnic organization was driven by different desires but the perceived influence of the organization on their ethnic identities resulted in an increase in cultural knowledge as well as an ability to stay rooted in the culture. However, the lack of participation on the part of some of the respondents was a choice dictated by conflicts of authenticity, time, and responsibilities. The comparison between involved and non-involved respondents in terms of their response to the earthquake revealed that involved respondents were more active in volunteer projects. Involvement in ethnic organizations influenced how the second generation Haitians perceived the earthquake affected their identities, and ethnic affirmation in terms of a desire to visit Haiti was expressed by involved respondents. The implications of this study revealed the importance of establishing ethnic organizations in middle and high schools in order to foster a sense of pride through knowledge at an earlier age.

Teacher Perspectives on the Instructional Impact of the Florida Alternate Assessment

Hawley, Katherine 01 January 2013 (has links)
This study examined special education teachers' perspectives of the instructional impact of the Florida Alternate Assessment (FAA) for students with significant cognitive disabilities. Through purposeful sampling, six special education teachers who serve students with significant cognitive disabilities and had experience administering the FAA were identified. Interviews posed questions about how they used the FAA to impact their instructional decision-making, how the FAA has influenced how the development of Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals, and how the FAA impacted how they defined access to the general education curriculum. The interviews, along with IEP artifacts, and a research journal formed the research design. Results revealed 8 major themes and 18 sub-themes. Teachers reported that the FAA ignores the complex needs of their students, and highlighted the curricular tensions between academics and life skills. A third of the teachers indicated they have created and adopted curriculum to mirror the FAA, and five out of the six teachers integrated more daily assessments similar to the FAA. In addition, the study revealed varied results for utilizing FAA results on IEP development and writing goals. Finally, teachers had varied beliefs on the value of curriculum content standards called access points for students with significant cognitive disabilities. Most of the teachers stated that higher standards lead to higher expectations. The results also revealed teachers' perspectives of the instructional impact of the FAA were influenced by their teaching context: center setting versus general education setting. Implications for future research and practice are included.

ANALYSIS OF STUDENT & TEACHER OUTCOMES FROM PRE-EXISTING DATA OBTAINED THROUGH THE LOW INCIDENCE INITIATIVE: TEACHING ACADEMIC AGE-APPROPRIATE LEARNING VIA COMMUNICATION PROJECT

Holman, April M. 01 January 2011 (has links)
Students with significant cognitive disabilities frequently exhibit reduced communicative and academic competence. The Low Incidence Initiative (LII) project was a professional development model designed to train school-based teams to facilitate increased communicative and academic competence with such students via distance-technology coaching. This study analyzed pre-existing data from year one of the LII. Data were analyzed to determine effectiveness of the project on communication status of students and on training school personnel to accurately identify student levels of communication, and for overall satisfaction with the project. Results indicated that all student participants demonstrated improvement in expressive communication output. 100% of students who required augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) increased in the complexity of AAC used. Some improvement in school personnel’s identification of student communication levels was demonstrated, however, the continued discrepancy between LII staff and school personnel indicates a need for additional training in this area. Qualitative analysis of survey question responses, and other anecdotal information, revealed an overwhelming satisfaction with the LII model, increased communicative sophistication of students, improvements in collaborative teaming, increased access to general curriculum for students, and improvement in school personnel skill-level. Implications of the results of this study and areas for future research are discussed.

Environmental Ethics Approach In The World And In Turkey

Yucel (karakoc), A. Gamze 01 December 2005 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis analyzes the environmental knowledge, attitudes and environmentally significant behaviors of the environmental professionals such as academicians and higher level of bureaucrats in Turkey. Additionally socio-demographic characteristics of target groups were measured to examine if environmental professionals having environmental knowledge and defending ecocentric or at least homocentric approaches do really reflect their attitudes and knowledge into actual behaviors or a paradox arises when actual behaviors are compared with expressed beliefs and attitudes. It was found that, socio-demographic characteristics such as gender, age and education were not show statistically significant difference at the respondents&rsquo / behavior. There only exist a positive relationship between education and environmental knowledge. Additionally, the data herein supports the theoretical assumption that, distinct professional groups have different environmental ethical approaches and different levels of environmental knowledge. Academicians have the highest consciousness level of environmental knowledge. Finally the most striking result is / although respondents have at least moderate level of environmental knowledge / there exist a statistically significant negative correlation between respondents&rsquo / environmental knowledge and their behavior.

I moderskapets skugga : berättelser om normativa ideal och alternativa praktiker

Johansson, Monica January 2014 (has links)
This study explores the relationship between ideals of motherhood and heterosexual normativity, from the perspective of women at the margins of these discourses. The title, In the shadow of Motherhood, illustrates the overriding power of the image of motherhood to marginalise alternative experiences. The concept of motherhood, like that of Family, has traditionally signalled the reproduction of the normative; it does not usually encompass the critical scrutiny that would allow for diverse experiences of mothering. Theoretically, the study is located within the fields of feminist sociology and inclusive family studies in productive dialogue with queer notions of gender and sexuality. Methodologically, it is inspired by narrative analysis and consists of in-depth interviews with eight lesbian, bisexual and heterosexual women grappling with different experiences of motherhood and mothering practices. Some of them identify as mothers while others do not, but by not being biogenetic mothers within a heterosexual relationship they share the position of being outside of what is often considered normal, natural and desirable. The analysis reveals a considerable variation in the positions, experiences and identities of the participants, particularly in regards to changes over time, which cannot be reduced to binary categories such as heterosexual/lesbian, biological/non-biological, mother/childless or voluntary/involuntary childlessness. The analysis also exposes a deep tension between ideologies of motherhood and lived experiences of care practices. Furthermore, from the perspective of the participants, the boundaries between inclusion and exclusion reinforce and challenge each other, creating spaces of both individual and collective resistance. The study illuminates the need to shift the location of these experiences from the margins to the centre not only in sociological research of family and gender, but also within feminist sociology.

[en] THE LANGUAGE BETWEEN THE BECOMING AND THE ALIENATION / [pt] A LINGUAGEM ENTRE O DEVIR E A ALIENAÇÃO

FELIPE BO HUTHMACHER 17 September 2018 (has links)
[en] This work deals with the relations established between the concepts of the language and of the unconscious in the works of Nietzsche, Lacan, Deleuze and Guattari. In the late nineteenth century, taking care of the role of tragic aesthetics in the culture of Ancient Greece, Nietzsche sees on the art of Sophocles and Aeschylus a symbolic universe in harmony with the unconscious drives of life. At the same time, he diagnoses the attitude socratic-platonic-christian as an interruption of the becoming processes symbolized by the tragic language on behalf of an apology to the virtues of a dialectical consciousness and the negativity of an anthropocentric monotheism. Lacan, in the 1950s, emerges as an allegory of this negative way of dealing with the unconscious processes of language, while Deleuze and Guattari, also in the second half of the twentieth century, affirm the nietzschian analysis of the tragic experience state as a way to blow up the lacanian structures that curtail life by the submission of desire on a monotheism-dialectic to the itself significant alienation.

Contribuições dos objetos de aprendizagem, no ensino de física, para o desenvolvimento do pensamento crítico e da aprendizagem significativa

Bulegon, Ana Marli January 2011 (has links)
In contemporary society is increasingly important and necessary that people have skills and develop them to handle computers and the Internet, they are able to search, to question, that they can do their jobs with creativity and competence, they have initiative and be able to solve problems. These capabilities are seen as critical thinking skills that is also recommended by the LDB No. 9394/96, which points to as one of the purposes for secondary education, the development of intellectual autonomy and critical thinking of learners. NCPs, to find out this goal, suggest that in the teaching of Physics questions are addressed situations of the real world lived by the students. However, in many cases, the teaching of Physics is still characterized by the transmission of information through lectures, dialogue-based, informed and supported by the use of textbooks; by excessive attention given the repetitive exercises, whose approach emphasizes the use of algorithms at the expense of mathematical understanding of concepts related to physical phenomena involved. The use of computers in teaching, has been pointed as one of the possibilities for promoting critical thinking and meaningful learning strategies and their use is to work with educational materials developed as digital learning objects (LO). This study has investigated the contribution of use of Learning Objects in the development of Critical Thinking (PC) and the Meaningful Learning (AS). The survey has included the project design and development of a set of learning units in the area of thermodynamics using Los and they have been prepared in accordance with the methodology of Three Pedagogical Moments (TPM), organized according to the theory or cycle of Kolb, implemented and tested in groups of two grades of high school in Physics. The assessment of critical thinking was done using indicators of critical thinking in student demonstrations. It was found that the LOs interactive and contextualized, embedded in the methodological model of the TPM and organized according to the cycle of Kolb worked investigative perspective, have allowed to develop active learning, reflective and participatory, not only to solve school problems, but also everyday problems. This work has highlighted the contribution of LOs in the formation of an autonomous and critical attitude of continual search for knowledge, being jointly responsible for course students, depth and meaning of their learning, leading them to develop critical thinking and meaningful learning.

Večeřová, Ludmila January 2018 (has links)
Name of thesis: Special regulation of obligations between food suppliers and clients Abstract The thesis addresses the issues connected to Act No. 395/2009 Coll., on significant market power in the sale of agricultural and food products and abuse thereof. The Act applies to obligations between suppliers of food products and buyers with such market power which allows them to use disadvantageous business conditions towards their suppliers, abusing their power. The Act's impact on the business relationships between suppliers and buyers in particular is considered as well as the conflict between the principles of protection of weaker contracting party and contractual freedom. The first chapter contains an analysis of the supplier-buyer relationship and the food market which serves as its platform. Beside the definition of food products, the chapter contains characterization of both parties, the evolution of the food market over time and evaluation of the capability of both suppliers and buyers to affect the conditions of their relationship. The second chapter deals with the Significant Market Power Act itself, particularly its purpose, circumstances of its adoption and the subsequent reactions of the interested parties and the public. The process of the Act's amendment in 2016 is described as well as the...
