An Analysis of Due Process Hearings Involving Students with Significant Disabilities in Their Least Restrictive Environment

Nichol, Wendy Seiter 01 June 2016 (has links)
This research analyzed all available hearings from 2013 to 2015 in a national database of due process hearings regarding placement issues and determinations of the least restrictive environment for individual students with significant disabilities. The main research question was whether parents/guardians and due process hearing officers sought placements for these children with significant disabilities that considered creatively and holistically a range of options rather than just a dialogue between already extant possible programmatic offerings. The research resulted in a description and taxonomy of the types of issues and factors arising in the hearings for students with significant disabilities from 2013 to 2015. This research shows almost no evidence of creative or holistic thinking in these due process decisions, and there was little evidence of parent advocacy for general education classes and creative options for their students with significant disabilities beyond existing offerings. The most unique placements to be found in public school settings for these students were in general education classes. Twenty-four students in this analysis were offered general education classes with their typically achieving peers. In general, though, for this unique group of students with significant disabilities, very few due process hearings could be found to have demonstrated creativity, or the consideration of holistic options, for such students. In general, in due process hearings for students with significant disabilities from 2013 to 2015, parents were overwhelming advocating for, and due process hearing officers were deciding among, options on the continuum of placements already traditionally considered for students with significant disabilities.

Développement et validation d'un modèle statistique de la surface de la mer pour la télédétection aux hyperfréquences / Development and validation of a sea surface statistical model for microwave remote sensing

Baufays - Gaublomme, Christine 15 September 2005 (has links)
The Telecommunications and Remote Sensing Laboratory of UCL has developed a method to retrieve the sea surface state parameters, from remote sensing measurements collected by a combination of microwave satellite payloads. This approach has required to construct a rough sea surface statistical model (wave displacement spectrum, long wave slope probability density function, ... ) as a function of a limited number of relevant sea state parameters, to develop an electromagnetic scattering model suitable for the rough sea surface model, to simulate radar and radiometric measurements for a given set of sea states and to develop a computational inversion method to retrieve the sea state parameters from satellite data. The objective of this thesis has been to analyze, develop and implement the statistical modeling of the rough sea surface and to validate this model (called UCL-3) on real data. In this research, four parameters have been chosen as the minimum set required to provide a suitable enough description of the sea state for microwave remote sensing purposes. The small wave structure of the rough sea depends on the instantaneous local wind speed, therefore it may be described by this parameter only. On the other hand, the large sea wave structure which contains the wave history needs more degrees of freedom; therefore, we propose to describe these waves not only as a function of the wind speed but also of the wave significant slope, of the fetch and of the wavenumber at the peak of the surface displacement spectrum. With respect to previous researches made at UCL we have introduced an additional peak enhancement in the large sea wave spectrum. The quality of the resulting sea surface model has been confronted with “ground truth data” in particular those from the BEATRICE buoy (located near Ouessant Island, West of France). In a second step, the surface model, along with the electromagnetic scattering one, has then been validated on satellite data. In this thesis a particular attention has been paid to the TANDEM mission synergistically combining data from different sensors borne on two different satellites ERS1 and ERS2. The obtained geophysical retrievals have been compared with simultaneous "in situ" buoy measurements from a set of NOAA buoys located in the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Alaska. This comparison allowed us to improve models previously derived at UCL and to reduce the percentage of retrieval failures i.e. the amounts of data points for which the retrieval procedure in the previous researches was failing. These sea surface results from inverted radar data agree with those derived from buoy data.

Sundqvist, Robert, Khan, Fahima January 2009 (has links)
Every third person in Sweden can be afflicted by cancer during a life course.  When a family member gets the cancer diagnosis this most often influences the lives of those who are closest to them. Research shows that family caregivers experience various changes through life. These changes are often accompanied by feelings of anxiety, helplessness, and powerlessness. The purpose with this literature review was to describe how caregivers of persons with cancer experience their changed situation of life. The sources of information used in analysis are 13 articles who describe the experiences of caregivers. The result is presented in four main themes with sub themes. These four themes are Changed life situation, Powerlessness and helplessness, Support is important and Need for information. In the presented result it is clear that relations between family members is either deepened or worsen. The need for information and support has showed itself to be of great value for family members. It is of importance to implement the result in healthcare so that registered nurses and other staff can be attentive to the experiences of the relatives. This knowledge can help nurses and other personnel to offer better opportunities to give support to these relatives.

En textanalys om förståelse av våld i skolan : Genealogi, diskurs och intersektionalitet

Lapins Fridell, Evelina January 2012 (has links)
This bachelor thesis investigates the discourses on violence among pupils in a school environment. The overall aim is to gain knowledge on how it is researched, interpreted and understood. The methods employed are genealogical analysis, discourse analysis and intersectional analysis. The analyzed texts consist of research reports, articles, dissertations and government authority guidelines. The theoretical framework drawn upon is post modernistic theory, social constructivism and intersectional theory. The main finding of the genealogical study may be that the “Olweus-discourse” may be construed as s dominating understanding of violence in school environment. In the Swedish National Agency for Education’s guidelines the violence among pupils in schools is represented by “harassment” and “violations”, whereas the recommended actions are mainly bureaucratic. The main conclusion of the intersectional analysis is that the studies guidelines might reinforce processes of normalization and that the Skolverket does not question the implications of the significant difference it refers to. All three studies suggest that a discourse of “systematic violence” as an understanding of violence between pupils in school is widespread. This bachelor thesis raises further questions about how discourse is further realized and how the performance of power in school environment is reinforced through “systematic violence”.

Sensorless Speed Control of Permanent Magnet-Assisted Synchronous Reluctance Motor (PMa-SynRM)

Chakali, Anil K. 2009 December 1900 (has links)
An interesting alternative for today's high efficiency variable speed drives is the Permanent Magnet-Assisted Synchronous Reluctance Motor drive, which belongs to the family of brushless synchronous AC motor drives. Generally, the reluctance torque of this motor is significant compared to the Permanent Magnet electrical torque. The advantage of increased reluctance torque is the decreased need of expensive permanent magnet (PM) material, which makes this solution thus cheaper than the respective permanent magnet motor. Also due to its synchronous operation, sensorless rotational control is possible along with higher power factor and better efficiency compared to the induction motor (IM). Therefore, this thesis first deals with the implementation of a vector control strategy for speed control of the PMa-synRM motor that can be applied to a washing machine application. The machine is supplied by a current controlled voltage source PWM inverter to control the instantaneous stator currents which are decided by the reference speed. Secondly, the thesis focuses on the sensorless speed operation of the PMa-SynRM to take advantage of the lower costs as well as increased system reliability which otherwise is not possible using the delicate speed or position sensors. The concept involves estimation of the rotor speed and/or position. There are several speed estimation techniques proposed by researchers and among them the observer based technique is proven and commonly used in the industry. The only requirements of the observer system are a very fast signal processor, specialized and optimized to perform complex mathematical calculations. The feasibility and effectiveness of the control techniques are verified using the experimental results, implemented using the Texas Instruments TMS320F2812 eZDSP controller board and the overall motor drive system in the laboratory.

Värderingsprocesser för bedöming av siginfikanta aspekter i företagsledning för hållbar utveckling / Valuation processes for assessment of significant aspects in corporate sustainability management

Schelin, Jannica January 2002 (has links)
<p>The use of environmental management systems, and objectives-led corporate management have become a widespread phenomenon today. Identification and assessment of an organisation’s significant (environmental) aspects is crucial within this work. Identification and especially assessment of significant aspects is often considered as a problematic step in many organisations. There are no generally accepted methods how to undertake this crucial step. Corporate management towards sustainable development needs to concern all members of the organisation to be successful. This study presents a management information system (MIS) for this purpose. The specific purpose is to develop a method for assessment of significant aspects that account for different viewpoints and values within the organisation. Methods used for this assessment has been tested through different procedures. The result of this study shows that a crossfunctional group should use the MIS, when the variables in the MIS are not merged together, and the result presented not aggregated. The tool could be used for both strategic and operative decisions. The MIS contributes with a new way of thinking, and opens a way for a holistic view within the company. The MIS may help to remove some of people’s selective perceptions and increase the problemsolving capacities within the company.</p>
