Znaky, styl a dramata Karla Čapka / Signs, Style and Karel Čapek 's Dramas

SunBee, Yu January 2011 (has links)
163 Abstract The paper is concerned with Karel Čapek's dramas, Loupežník, R.U.R., Věc Makropulos, Bílá nemoc and Matka. It analyzes systematically the structure of dramas, especially from the semiotic and stylistic point of view. Both disciplines are considered in quite a broad sense, hence at first we examined their basic characteristics, and then clarified how Čapek's dramas actually relate with them. First of all, we focused on the meaning and the function of sign and enquired specific features of a dramatic text. Furthermore, we dealt with dramatic elements, in particular with time, space, dramatic characters, and with each element, we examined its characteristics and functions in connection both with drama and theater. We presented main and significant theories and methods of scholars. Regarding the analysis of K. Čapek's dramas from the semiotic point of view, we clarified characteristics and syntactic structure of dramatic characters in connection with the theory of actants. Such syntactic structure makes it possible to clarify and understand the construction of a narrative and the function of characters. We explained the function of two elements, time and space that realize the hypothetical possible world of drama, we have shown that according to the construction of time drama can have a complex...

Tsunami Warnings: Understanding in Hawai'i

Gregg, Chris E., Houghton, Bruce F., Paton, Douglas, Johnston, David M., Swanson, Donald A., Yanagi, Brian S. 01 January 2007 (has links)
The devastating southeast Asian tsunami of December 26, 2004 has brought home the destructive consequences of coastal hazards in an absence of effective warning systems. Since the 1946 tsunami that destroyed much of Hilo, Hawai'i, a network of pole mounted sirens has been used to provide an early public alert of future tsunamis. However, studies in the 1960s showed that understanding of the meaning of siren soundings was very low and that ambiguity in understanding had contributed to fatalities in the 1960 tsunami that again destroyed much of Hilo. The Hawaiian public has since been exposed to monthly tests of the sirens for more than 25 years and descriptions of the system have been widely published in telephone books for at least 45 years. However, currently there remains some uncertainty in the level of public understanding of the sirens and their implications for behavioral response. Here, we show from recent surveys of Hawai'i residents that awareness of the siren tests and test frequency is high, but these factors do not equate with increased understanding of the meaning of the siren, which remains disturbingly low (13%). Furthermore, the length of time people have lived in Hawai'i is not correlated systematically with understanding of the meaning of the sirens. An additional issue is that warning times for tsunamis gene rated locally in Hawai'i will be of the order of minutes to tens of minutes and limit the immediate utility of the sirens. Natural warning signs of such tsunamis may provide the earliest warning to residents. Analysis of a survey subgroup from Hilo suggests that awareness of natural signs is only moderate, and a majority may expect notification via alerts provided by official sources. We conclude that a major change is needed in tsunami education, even in Hawai'i, to increase public understanding of, and effective response to, both future official alerts and natural warning signs of future tsunamis.

Packaging: Elementos de etiquetado frente al nuevo sistema de advertencia y su relación con el posicionamiento de marca en la categoría de snacks y bebidas azucaradas en hombres y mujeres de Lima Metropolitana / Packaging: Labeling elements against the new warning system and its relationship with brand positioning in the category of sugary drinks and snacks in men and women of Metropolitan Lima

Cubas Mostacero, Hilary Kelly 06 July 2020 (has links)
This paper investigates packaging, which is made up of its seven elements: color, typography, logos, label, material, size and informative signs; and its relationship with product positioning in the category of snacks and sugary drinks. This problem arises due to a new law that went into effect on June 17, 2019, which requires brands to place a warning octagon on the top right of the packaging cover. To determine the relationship between these variables, the research methodology had a mixed approach. First, for this study a qualitative investigation was carried out which consisted of interviews with the primary target audience and in-depth interviews with the secondary target audience. This aimed to learn more about consumer behavior and insights. Then, a quantitative investigation was carried out through 263 surveys. Later, this information was processed and the variables were correlated to understand the relationship between them. Finally, both consumers and marketing experts confirmed what the authors indicated, that packaging has a great influence on them in this product category where there is little involvement. On the other hand, the relationship between the seven elements of the packaging and the positioning of the product was confirmed. Where color and material have a low relationship, while typography, logos, label, size and information signs have a moderate relationship with product positioning. / Tesis

The role of soft neurological sign abnormalities in clinical associations and treatment response predictions within a first episode psychosis neuroleptic naive population

Dhaliwal, Kiranpreet 03 July 2018 (has links)
BACKGROUND: Soft neurological signs (SNS) are subtle, nonspecific neurological abnormalities that are present in first episode psychosis (FEP) patients. SNS are associated with clinical variables such as poor long term psychosocial functioning, executive functioning, and positive and negative symptomology. However, few studies have evaluated treatment responsiveness with respect to SNS. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether SNS show: 1.) baseline and longitudinal differences between both diagnostic groups (schizophrenia (FEP-SZ), non-schizophrenia FEP-NSZ, and healthy controls (HC)) and treatment outcome (week 26 and year 1); 2.) relationships to clinical measures; 3.) predictive characteristics of treatment response. METHODS: SNS scores (Neurological Evaluation Scale) were obtained for 312 FEP (236 FEP-SZ and 76 FEP-NSZ subjects and 169 HC subjects and for subjects classified as treatment responsive and non-responsive at week 26 (N=105, N=105) and year 1 (N=101, N=97), respectively. Diagnostic group and treatment responsiveness group comparisons were assessed with ANCOVA and logistic regression models and both were co-varied for age, sex, race, and handedness. Baseline and longitudinal SNS relationships to clinical variables were determined using Spearman correlations and repeated measures correlations, and both were corrected by False Discovery Rate. Linear mixed effects model was utilized to analyze the data longitudinally. RESULTS: Baseline cognitive perceptual SNS measures had the greatest effect size differences, were predictive of group membership, and differentiated the two proband groups with FEP-SZ having worse SNS scores. Baseline cognitive perceptual SNS did not significantly predict treatment response at week 26 or year 1, but changes in cognitive perceptual at week 26 was predictive of treatment responsiveness at week 26 and year 1. Longitudinally, SNS scores drop in both FEP groups and treatment groups. The FEP-SZ group showed greater longitudinal within subject correlations than FEP-NSZ. SNS scores were only differentiated between year 1 outcome groups at week 8. There were greater longitudinal within subject correlations for the responsive group. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate that there are baseline group differences and that changes in cognitive perceptual SNS scores at week 26 are predictive of treatment responsiveness at week 26 and year 1. / 2019-07-03T00:00:00Z

A smartphone camera reveals an ‘invisible’ Parkinsonian tremor: a potential pre-motor biomarker?

Williams, S., Fang, H., Alty, J., Qahwaji, Rami S.R., Patel, P., Graham, C.D. 21 September 2018 (has links)
no / There are a wide variety of ways to objectively detect neurological signs, but these either require special hard-ware (such as wearable technology) or patient behaviour change (such as engagement with smartphone tasks) [2]. Neither constraint applies to the technology of computer vision, which is the processing of single or multiple camera images by computer to automatically derive useful information. The only equipment involved is ubiquitous: camera and computer. We report a computer vision-enhanced video sequence from a 68-year-old man, diagnosed with idiopathic Parkinson’s disease 2 years previously.

Emotions, Social Activity and Neuroscience: The Cultural-Historical Formation of Emotion

Burkitt, Ian 24 November 2018 (has links)
Yes / This article challenges the use of cognitive-behavioural psychological models underpinning many of the dominant and popular accounts of emotion in the neurosciences. Acknowledging that neurobiology is important for any understanding of emotion, an alternative model of neuropsychology is sought in the work of theorists of the cultural-historical school, particularly A. N. Leontyev and A. R. Luria. The importance of their work in stressing the key role of intentional social activity, culture, and language in the formation of human neuropsychological functions is developed into a theory of emotions that can provide an alternative for emotion studies. In this theory, activity, culture, history, and individual ontogeny play the defining role in structuring the neurobiological systems that underlie emotions, as opposed to the evolution of behaviours that are hard-wired into the brain and function as automatic responses. Instead, it is understood that there is a continuum between evolution and human social and cultural development.
