Memorializing Babyn Yar : Politics of Memory and Commemoration of the Holocaust in Ukraine

Kutsovska, Galyna January 2019 (has links)
Recently in the West, interest in the memory of the Holocaust considered as a commonly shared dark past has increased. In Ukraine the commemoration of the Holocaust is affected by the ongoing nation-building process, with a focus on the collective memories of the Holodomor (the Famine of 1932-1933) and the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN). At the core of the debates around the Holocaust remembrance lies the memorialization of Babyn Yar, a multilayered memory site where Jewish and non-Jewish collective memories compete. Public and political actors vie for its memorial space in order to promote their own views through recognition of their respective tragedies. The memorialization and landscape of Babyn Yar is therefore transformed together with changes in the memory politics of the Holocaust. This thesis studies the contemporary politics of memory and commemoration of the Holocaust in Ukraine with a focus on Babyn Yar and its memorial objects. Through the illustrations of the memory site this project analyzes the memorial space and grounds and explores the struggles over the collective memories in Ukraine.

"England expects..." and all that : the visual memory of Horatio Lord Nelson

Ward, Brigid Clare Fitzgerald 16 June 2008
The project of this thesis has been to examine the results of the development of the reputation and concept of the historical figure of Horatio Nelson as symbol of masculinity from nearly the beginning of the myth-making and mythologizing in the nineteenth century to the present. There have been several studies recently that examine Nelson the myth, Nelson as legend, Nelson as hero: they study the process of the development of this character. As a result of the mythologizing the history of Horatio Nelson is likely lost. However the memory of Nelson a very different thing and the focus of this thesis has been reinforced through commemoration throughout the two centuries since his death coming to a logical conclusion in 2008. This was done in both the public sphere (in the form of monuments) and in the private sphere (Nelson was merchandised) with the logical result in the first part of the twenty-first century being a manifestation of Nelson in fan culture on the internet. He has now been essentialised, extrapolated, and used in a wide variety of ways to navigate masculinity by both genders.

This guide would present new forms to observe the urban landscape considering the main role played by the city in the Brazilian history as political and cultural capital. The major focus of the foreseen itineraries would be the nation’s republican phase from the end of the XIX century till the 1970’s. In this period, Rio has faced innumerable urban changes which would be also analyzed during a series of walking-tours described in the travel guide. Based on this approach, the paper analyzes the formulation possibilities for this touristic product through theoretical references about Collective Memory, Sites of Memory, Cultural Identity and Heritage Interpretation. Taking advantage from these concepts, the study explains this emerging style of cultural tourism as an incentive for local residents to become travellers in their own city, as citizen- tourists.

Způsoby vzniku a reprodukce historického vědomí na příkladu spolku Radecký Praha / The creation and reproduction of historical consciousness on the example of the association Radecký Praha

Petrnoušková, Anna January 2016 (has links)
The master thesis "The creation and reproduction of historical consciousness on the example of the association Radecký Praha" deals with the historical consciousness, its creation and reproduction. The theoretical part defines not only historical consciousness but also pays attention to the related issues, such as collective memory, historical memory, sites of memory, or national identity, due to the fact that the boundaries between collective memory and historical consciousness are often at least unclear. Theoretical part is primarily based on the works of Maurice Halbwachs, Jan Assmann, Miroslav Hroch and Pierre Nora. The empirical part of this study concludes the research of the association Radetzky Prague, which seeks to return the monument of Marshal Radetzky on the Malostranské náměstí. The research tries to describe and understand the ways of creation and reproduction of historical consciousness of its members throughout the analysis of qualitative interviews. Mentioned authors already provide a certain methodological background research. Conclusion contains a summary and a comparison of research results with theses of authors that are dealing with similar themes. This work is not a purely historical or sociological one; it is trying to stay somewhere between historical and sociological...

[en] IN SEARCH OF TRANSPARENCY: AN ANALYSIS OF THE SOCIO-POLITICAL MOVEMENTS OF MULTIPLE ACTORS INVOLVED IN THE PROCESS OF CONSTITUTION OF THE MEMORIAL OF RESISTANCE OF SÃO PAULO (MRSP) THROUGH ANTIHISTORY APPROACH / [pt] EM BUSCA DE TRANSPARÊNCIA: UMA ANÁLISE DAS MOVIMENTAÇÕES SÓCIO-POLÍTICAS DOS MÚLTIPLOS ATORES ENVOLVIDOS NO PROCESSO DE CONSTITUIÇÃO DO MEMORIAL DA RESISTÊNCIA DE SÃO PAULO (MRSP) À LUZ DA ABORDAGEM ANTI-HISTORY

RENATA GUIMARAES QUELHA DE SA 12 June 2018 (has links)
[en] The present study seeks to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the area of Organizational Studies through the analysis of the constitution of the Memorial São Paulo (MRSP) within the social constructivist paradigm from a relational and critical perspective proposed by the ANTi-History approach. By assuming the organization as a verb, an emerging phenomenon, unfinished and in constant transformation and no longer as a noun static, representative, coherent, neutral and discreet, in accordance with the Organizing precepts, one can bring to light the negotiations and maneuvers employed by the different actors involved, as well as contribution of each of these to the constitution of the MRSP. Thus, highlighting and giving transparency to the socio-political and power relations that are subjacent to the constitution of an organisations such as the MRSP, as well as the on-going process of (re) configuration and resignification of the space as a place of memory dedicated to resistance, only increase the importance of looking more closely at the intentionalities associated with that which was recovered and the interpretations of the past according to the agendas and interests of certain actors. The analysis and the triangulation of several sources, associated with the reflexive and critical posture required by an ANTi-History researcher, allowed to identify, recoup and demonstrate the actions and implications of a multiplicity of actors, promoting a deeper and more detailed contextualization of the analysis by removing the veil of apparent simplicity of the organization and, finally, revealing possible cases of effacement and silencing.

The political struggle for the construction of memorials associated with the Brazilian civil-military dictatorship (1964-1985) gained prominence in the last decade from the understanding that the preservation, financing and maintenance of these sites of memory are state policies legitimized by instruments such as the Brazil’s 3rd Human Rights National Plan and the Final Report of the National Truth Commission. The building projects and processes of these sites of memory of the resistance are carried out by agents located in the field of disputes for memory, truth and justice, conformed by the recent context of deepening transitional justice in the country. Based on the assumption that the articulation of these agents in search of legitimation of the sites of memory of resistance constitutes a strategy to inscribe facts and stories in the social imaginary, this research aims to describe how these projects and processes are marked by disputes and asymmetries between these agents, as well as in their interactions with the power reified by the State. Situated and relational, this research aims to characterize and analyze the actors, as well as the temporalities, images and narratives that are in dispute in the processes of construction of memorials in progress in the city of Salvador (Bahia’s Resistance Memorial, Marighella’s House and Barbalho’s Fort), from 2011 to 2016.
